I’m craving purple potatoes. Potatoes have become scarce in my house lately. Paranoid about my family’s long history of diabetes, we are trying to limit our starch intake to see if my current symptoms can be controlled through diet. Because we already cut out gluten, I don’t really miss bread. We’ve never consumed a lot of rice & prefer spaghetti squash or zucchini noodles to pasta. But oh how I miss the potatoes– the beautiful, majestic purple ones particularly. I’m sneaking them in as the crust for quiche & pot pies, but the chips & fries & mash are all gone. I have to reserve all things majestic for this next call. Love this one…

Since assuming the Director post in 1981, Dr. Zona has been devoted to expanding & modernizing the facility. He has also overseen the expansion of the museum’s collections & outreach initiatives.

Dr. Zona has received a number of national honors including the Gari Melchers Medal in 1996 for his outstanding contribution to American Art and culture. He is the author of numerous articles on art and art history and he is a major contributor to the recent Abrams publication Master Paintings from The Butler Institute of American Art.

AWARDS: 1st place $400, 2nd place $200, & 3rd place $100, plus honorable mentions. Cash award winners are offered an exhibition to show their work at Majestic Galleries in 2015. Not every weed is to be plucked and discarded. Hopefully no one is spraying chemicals on their garden--either to fertilize OR remove pests; however, I DO want to encourage you to remember that not every weed needs to be removed either. Unfortunately for my husband, my late Aunt Mildred has been visiting. Not literally–that would be creepy. The long standing joke in my family is that my Aunt Mildred never finished anything until the last possible moment. She hemmed her daughters’ prom dresses while they were in them trying to leave for the prom, and she left all of her kitchen cabinets wide open until she was finished with dinner. This week alone, I have left kitchen cabinets wide open 4 times. If I lose count, I only have to count the knots on his head. So, my family would say, “Hi, Mildred. Thanks for visiting.” This next Call is a far better way to be wide open. Trust me on this one…

JUROR: Dale Laitinen is an active workshop instructor and signature member of the National Watercolor Society and Watercolor West. Dale graduated from San Jose State University with a degree in Art in 1975, and has been a full-time practicing artist since 1985. Dale has been featured in The Artist’s Magazine, Watercolor Magic, Watercolor Magazine, Drawing Board Magazine and several books.

His paintings were featured in the October 2013 Southwest Art. Laitinen has two instructional videos, and this year is launching “Bristle” his online art magazine. His water-media and oil paintings were recently exhibited in a two person show at Petroglyphe Gallery in Mokelumne Hill, California, where he shows regularly. He is a past juror of many National and regional exhibitions including Watercolor West, Kentucky Watercolor Society, Utah Watercolor Society, Watercolor Society of Oregon, Red River Watermedia Show, Magnum Opus and many others.

AWARDS: $1,000 Best of Show, $500 1st Place & $250 2nd Place

Rosalux is a cooperative art gallery that was founded in Minneapolis in 2002. The gallery is home to 20 artists whose work is well known both nationally & internationally, featured in various major collections, and who have individually received numerous prestigious awards and grant recognitions.

I used to be the queen of the hand cut garnish and/or decorative knife skills. I think tournée-cut potatoes simply taste better; I do. But, my recent cooking laziness has forced me to return to a more fresh-cut approach, like carambola (star fruit). I’ve looked at them decoratively for so many years, I’d forgotten how delicious they really are. I have not forgotten how delicious the magazine hosting this next Call is however. We’re only a few weeks out from the Kentucky Derby. And while I am not an avid follower of horse racing, I’ll take any excuse to eat Derby Pie. Originating in 1975, The Paducah Summer Festival Photo Competition has grown from a fledgling contest to Paducah Photo, the region’s most prestigious annual photographic event. It is open to all without restrictions on size or content. It provides photographers with an outlet for their art, encouragement for growth in their vision and presentation and cash rewards for works of exceptional merit.

Each year from the hundreds of works submitted, 60 to 100 images are selected for exhibition by a highly qualified juror, with 8 to 10 of them receiving cash awards.

JUROR: Art advisor, Ariel Meyerowitz, of Ariel Meyerowitz Art Advisory (Brooklyn, New York) specializes in vintage and contemporary photography, painting, prints and works on paper and counsels novice and experienced collectors as well as companies on star ting or expanding collections through a process of education, presentation and acquisition. Meyerowitz has worked in the art community for twenty years. She was the owner of the celebrated Ariel Meyerowitz Gallery, first located in SoHo and then in Chelsea until 2006.

Before her gallery she was Associate Director for the James Danziger Gallery in New York, Director of the Scott Nichols Gallery in San Francisco, interned at the Friends of Photography/Ansel Adams Center and was a freelance Art Reviewer at the Bay Area Times. Meyerowitz is the daughter o f photographer, Joel
Meyerowitz and artist, Vivian Bower.

AWARDS: The juror will choose approximately 35 photographs for the exhibition. First, second and third place prizes will be awarded. At least two honorable mentions will be given at the discretion of the juror.

Award winners will be announced on their website prior to the Opening Reception.
