GÂTEAUX!

Build it, and I will eat. I stand in awe of pastry chefs.  Most of the ones I know are delightfully batty (industry rumor is that the flour makes you a little off center).  I love that their creations are often part art, part architechture.  If you don’t think how something looks affects how it tastes, you are clearly eating ugly food.  This next Call wants to see the built environment that inspires you.  As always, feel free to venture past food…

Check out this Call for Entries from Darkroom Gallery in Vermont called The Built Environment. Enter your work for as little as $20. Don’t forget Darkroom offers free framing & matting on accepted work!

* Editor’s Note: You guys always knock it out of the park with this gallery. Please make sure that you tell them that you found the show on Art & Art Deadlines so they know that all the talent is here at AAAD.

The Built Environment

Images that capture a vision of the man made world around us.

We’ve been documenting the built environment since the beginnings of photography.  It’s natural – our lives are entwined with and dependent upon structures of all kinds.  Let us examine the genius designs, abundant materials both found and fabricated, engineering feats, beauty and function, of our constructed environments.  Technical mastery has much to do with a great architectural photograph, but also an understanding of the architect’s vision, and/or the humanity that invigorates and utilizes its spaces.

Learn more about the Persona show at the Darkroom Gallery!Whether a skyscraper or a shed, chasm span or walking bridge, from convenience store to industrial complex, public or personal (heck, an outhouse is a pertinent structure), and even the remains of such, Darkroom Gallery is looking forward to featuring your built environments.

JUROR: With an engineering degree from Trinity College (Dublin) and an Architect/Author father (Raymond McGrath), Norman McGrath was primed for educated view of his subject. He has been photographing architecture and interiors for decades, capturing the work of major architects and designers and their well-known works. His images have been featured in the foremost architectural publications, as well as his popular book, “Photographing Buildings Inside Out”. The American Institute of Architects selected McGrath for its Institute Honor award. McGrath continues to author and co-author books illustrated with architectural photography (“Manhattan Skyscrapers”, “Skyscraper Rivals”, and New York’s Pennsylvania Station”) as well as educate and inspire students of photography at the Maine Photographic Workshops, the Palm Beach Photo Workshops, and the Calumet Institute of the University of Maryland.

berry ME?

Some foods speak for themselves and almost don’t need to be tasted.  A beautiful mound of dark chocolate makes my mouth water before I ever taste or smell it.  I can imagine the taste of ripe raspberries and blackberries by just conjuing the image in my head.  Think about the psychologically healing power of chicken soup (or in my case, junk food).  Food speaks, and so should your work.  This next Call wants art that speaks.  This could be a great year-long opportunity for you…

I am a wierdo, admittedly. I am obsessed with food. I don’t drink coffee. I rarely wear pants. I won’t do much that can’t be done in four inch heels, and I don’t like prints…unless they are geometric. Oh yeah, that is just the tip of the weirdness iceberg. I like geometric food too…Gorgeous round egg yolks, little logs of goat cheese, and the perfect grid of a golden waffle.  This next Call shares my love of the geometric.  Take a look

GALLERY STATEMENT: “Every year for 50 years the L.A. Municipal Gallery has held its ‘Open Call’ exhibit where any artist can show up with their art and an entry fee (to benefit gallery programs) and the piece is shown.  The Los Angeles Center For Digital Art decided to launch an international experiment of the same nature where the artists upload images that are printed and hung by the gallery.

Prior Snap to Grid reception at LACDA!“The hundreds of works are displayed in a grid like installation (reminiscent of postcard art shows of the 1980’s) where every work submitted is exhibited.  The usual (less than democratic) selection process where only the precious few are chosen is turned on its head in a curatorial anarchy where everyone gets to participate and the viewer is literally left to be the judge. The show represents a snapshot of a current moment in art history when digital imaging has reached the hands of the many, an age where culture belongs to the ‘mobblogers’ around the globe.

“From Thailand to Texas, amateur to academic, beautiful to banal and beyond the monumental quantity and variety of “Snap to Grid” becomes an aesthetic experience where each individual piece adds to an agglomerative effect that has a life of its own.”

CALL for ENTRIES: Collaboration

I am an only child, and I don’t share well… in the kitchen or any where else.  I am the mother of an only child, and I have tried to teach him to be more tolerant and better able to share.  But honestly, he’s better at it than me.  My husband does most of the cooking in our house, and he is much better at sharing than I am as well, ha.  He kindly allows me to cook for the family in his kitchen on occasion, and every once in a while, we collaborate.  This next Call wants your collaborations.  Play nice, folks…

CALL for ENTRIES: Collaboration

Learn more about Collaborations at BAG!Christo and Jeanne Claude. McCartney and Lennon.  Cookies and milk. In collaboration, sometimes a sum is greater than its individual parts.  Compelling works of art have often been produced by the meeting of two creative minds, or as a result of one artist’s exposure to the work of another.

Historically, schools of art were a breeding ground for new ideas, where artists could learn from their masters and grow from one another, bringing the large world in a little closer. To share images and ideas over distances was difficult, but expected as part of one’s training. It was simply a stepping stone to individual fame.

In the age of Flickr, Facebook, and hostyourdomain.com, artists may now share their work with the world at the touch of a button. We can choose to bridge an ocean in an instant, or to isolate our work entirely. It is entirely yours to decide. So the choice to collaborate may now be deliberate; choosing to ‘share’ can be more profound than an RSS feed, more mindful than physical proximity, and more creative than working alone.
