I am a magazine reader. Yep, the paper ones. I read and peruse imagery as motivation for household projects, photography and, of course, cooking. One of my favorite food magazines? Food and Wine, of course. I have delusions of grandeur each and every time I watch Top Chefs that I could win that show and have my work featured in F&W. Instead, I am opting to submit my art to this Call for Creative Quarterly. Do you think Food & Wine will be so impressed they will cover my food anyway? Me neither. Anyway, don’t miss this opportunity…

By launching a new redesign, they’ve become a much more interactive journal. They search the web for interesting projects in art and design to share with their readers. They ask their readers to share what inspires them. The purpose, not to copy but to inspire.

Take a look at back issues of Creative Quarterly! Inspiration can come from an innovative chair design or an unusual ring or from an interview with a well-known designer or artist or something from ones past.

Creative Quarterly is the best of art and design, quarterly.

ELIGIBILITY & MEDIA: Open to all undergraduate and graduate students, recent graduates, professors, instructors, graphic designers, art directors, illustrators, photographers and fine artists in all media.

There are no media restrictions, and the awards include both an exhibit at the Limner Gallery as well as an opportunity to have your work in the nationally-distributed art magazine, Direct Art. CALL for ENTRIES:
Surreal Visions

SlowArt Productions presents the group thematic exhibition, Surreal Visions. This exhibition will focus on art inspired by the surreal and will be held at the Limner Gallery.

Eligible are all forms of surreal and visionary figurative art. All interpretations of the theme “Surreal Visions” will be reviewed and considered.

ELIGIBILITY AND RESTRICTIONS: The competition is open to all artists, national and international, working in all media. All forms of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, graphics, digital and installation art, video, etc. are eligible. Entrants must be 18 years of age or older to apply. Wall mounted works must not be taller than 72″ no wider than 120″. Sculptural work must fit through a standard height, 36″wide entry door.

DEADLINE: The final postmarked deadline is June 30, 2011. Entries must be postmarked or submitted via email by this date.

NOTIFICATION: Artists will be notified of acceptance or non-acceptance no later than July 20, 2011. Results will be posted on or before this date at: http://www.slowart.com/results. Notification will be made via email and/or by mail with the return of materials in the SASE provided by the artist. Artists who do not include the SASE because they do not want their submission materials returned must provide a self addressed stamped #10 (letter size) envelope if they wish to be notified by mail.

All artists who provide a working email address will be notified via email, if no email or return envelope is provided, artists will only be notified if accepted to exhibit. Type or print your email address clearly, if a mistake is made reading it you will not be notified. Read the notification page for details of the notification policy.

ENTRY FEES: There is a $35.00 entry fee for one to four artworks entered, presentation is by digital files. There is a $5.00 fee for each additional artwork above four. Details of 2D artwork count as an additional artwork. Sculptors may provide one additional view per artwork without cost. Artists accepted to exhibit will not be charged additional fees of any kind. Payments may be by check or money order payable to SlowArt Productions, or by credit card using PayPal.

SALES: All works in the show must be for sale. The gallery will take a 30 % commission on all sales. Sale price is determined by the artist.

EXHIBITION and AWARDS: Winning artists will be featured in a group exhibition at the Limner Gallery, September 3 – October 1, 2011. The exhibition will also be displayed on the Limner Gallery web site. One artist will be awarded a two page display in Direct Art Volume #19, Fall 2012 issue. Two artists will be awarded a single page display. Direct Art is distributed to bookstores across the USA including Borders and Barnes and Noble.

Remember when the electric kitchen mixer was only a dream? Well, no, I don’t either, but you have at least contemplated what it was like BEFORE we had electrical conveniences. I, personally, don’t think I have the motivation or arm strength to deal with a manual egg beater. But, I have no doubt that someone somewhere thought that an electric hand mixer was a ridiculous, impossible dream. This next Call may test your ability to imagine the future, but I encourage you to be open to the possibilities. Always be an optimist…

From the Artform Gallery website: “We’ve come across some very interesting technology that we believe will change how the world can be interconnected. The technology is in the palm of most peoples hands and they don’t even realize it. *Editor’s Note: I encourage you to think about this Call with an open mind. I was very hesitant to publish it because it is vague and unclear; however, after a discussion with the Gallery, I think they are just trying to keep their “secret technology” under wraps until the opening. But to help you a little, there is an ACTUAL show, not just an online show. There is an ACTUAL opening, but you don’t have to send your work… only .jpgs. I have a theory on the technology, and if you email me we can compare theories. I’ve wasted a lot of entry fees, but I think this $5 is worth being a part of the mystery.

ARTIST RESIDENCY: 1 Week River Retreat

It isn’t about my wanting to be ignorant of the source of my food or the avoiding the death of a living being. I just don’t like the guts part. No, really. For those of you that don’t normally consider Artist in Residence programs due to an inability to leave home for months at a time, this might just be your chance!

ARTIST RESIDENCY: Trade River Retreat Center

Vision Quest Photo Workshops announces a new yearly grant of a one-week photographic artist’s residency. Spend five days to one week alone in the woods devoted to nourishing your artistic spirit at Vision Quest’s Trade River Retreat Center in NW Wisconsin.

For mid-career fine-art photographers looking for a retreat-like experience to work on their art, reflect on their artistic direction, make new photographs, plan new career paths, have time away from work/family/life pressure and stress or use in any way they find useful to move their art or career forward or use the time away to simply reflect on where they are and where they are headed.

Stay in a very private retreat in the woods along the banks of a pristine sand-bottom river. The Trade River Retreat Center is located near Grantsburg, Wisconsin, an hour and a half from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, MN.

Modern facilities include full bathroom with hot and cold running water, heat, electricity, phone, modern kitchen, wood-burning fireplace, sauna, fire-pit, library and stereo system. See student photos made at the Trade River Retreat Center.

The residency will include a private consultation, in person or via phone or Skype, with Vision Quest Photo Workshops founder and director Douglas Beasley before the week begins to help set the tone and scope of time spent there and also after its conclusion, to discuss its impact on future artistic endeavors.

DEADLINE: July 31, 2011

ENTRY FEE: There is a $20 application fee.

SUBMISSIONS: Submit 12 .jpeg images. Also send a 300 to 500-word artist statement about your past and current work and overall artistic direction, and a 300 to 500-word statement of what you would like to do with your residency.

IMAGE GUIDELINES:

sRGB or RGB color space (standard) – not CMYK.
Save files to 72 dpi resolution, flattened layers, 8 bit JPG files.
Sized to 1280 pixels on the longest side.
JPG compression at level 7 (medium). This compression level will not affect the quality of the images viewed on the monitor.
Enter zero in the field for width, height and depth.
Each image should be titled.
DO NOT USE characters other than a period or underscore preceding jpg in the file name. The following characters !@#$%^&*()+?/"~ will lead to image uploading problems.

RESOURCE for ARTISTS: Model Mayhem

Food access easily drives what you actually consume. There isn’t a real restaurant within 10 miles of my home. As a result, we cook almost everyday. There is only one grocery store within 10 miles of my home; therefore, there is no late night run to the store for chips or ice cream or chocolate. We have to plan our bad behavior in advance. This post will help you plan your artistic behavior and give you phenomenal access to a great artist resource.

Check out this Opportunity to join Model Mayhem! There is no fee to join, and some models with work for prints. The database is searchable by state and city, and if there are available models near me… there are models near you! Take a look…

MODEL MAYHEM

My esteemed collegue, Arizona-based artist and photographer Jerry Portelli, has been shoving me out of my comfort zone for a couple of years now. And, he introduced me to Model Mayhem–an online resource, primarily for models, that offers photographers and artists a way to connect to models near them. For the models, it is an online “go see.” For you, as an artist, you get to pour over their profile and previous work to find just what inspires you.

DEADLINE: Quit procrastinating

NOTIFICATION: The sooner you join, the sooner you’ll find your muse.

ENTRY FEE: I have had several models agree to TFP or Trade for Prints in lieu of cash. They build their portfolio, and I have money to eat and still produce artwork. Model Mayhem is free to join, but you must be approved.

ELIGIBILITY: The approval process isn’t automated. You must fit into a member category and the requirements for that category.

Bio Requirements You are asked to provide a short bio as part of your application. Please provide details about your experience, goals, reasons for being on MM, or any other relevant information. Please err on the side of providing more info rather than less. Also, don’t make it sound like a personal ad.

Must Be In A Member Category

Your profile must clearly fit into one of the member categories listed upon sign up: Model, Photographer, Hair Stylist / Makeup Artists / Wardrobe Stylist, Photoshop Wizard, Clothing Designer, Body Painter or Artist / Painter.

Model Mayhem is a photographer's dream! You Must Be You They do not allow profiles to be set up or managed by people other than the profile owner. Passwords and login information should always be kept private.

Members must be 16 years of age or older. Members under 18 are not allowed to display photos that we deem too provocative or revealing. Unless you’re 18 or over you may not display any level of nudity (including “implied” nudity), depictions of bondage or any image that is sexual in nature.

Provide 4 Different Photos (or more!) At least four different photos are required for all accounts. No duplicates, re-crops, or manipulations of the same image. Members are expected to maintain a minimum of four relevant photos at all times.

Quality Images Required

They want quality images on Model Mayhem. Your photos must be judged to be of sufficient quality. This means that you should not submit webcam shots, mirror shots, poorly exposed photos, too grainy, too much compression, arm’s-length self portraits, personal snapshots, etc.

Make Your Photos Big Enough

MM recommends that your photos be 600-800 pixels on the longest side. Anything less than 200×300 pixels or so is typically too small to see. Images wider than 800 pixels will be resized.

No Fakes They take copyright laws very seriously. If your photos or profile appear to be the work of someone else, you will be denied.

No Pornography Pornographic material is not allowed on this site. This includes photos, linking to such sites or networking, or referencing adult work in your bio or portfolio.

Photographer Requirements

Show A Model Photographers must have at least 4 different photos specifically of adult human models. Children, cars, landscapes, animals, etc do not count. Show Variety. Please provide at least 2 different models or 2 different locations.

Artist/Painter Requirements

Use Models. Please focus your submissions on art that utilizes models (human) rather than just landscapes, etc. Original Only. Artwork must be original only. No copies of existing artwork.

I love Art-O-Mat! Art Starts at only $5!

I originally became an art gallery owner because I couldn’t afford the art I loved, and I wanted to be responsible for making at least some of the art I loved affordable. But I assure you that your friendly blogger didn’t invent the idea of affordable art. Neither did Art-O-Mat, but I love their take.

I am blogging from the road today, so, instead of posting a traditional Art Deadline for you…I thought I would just remind you of some opportunities that are ALWAYS out there for you like Art-O-Mat.
