There’s more to Iowa than corn. Corn is only harvested from mid-June to mid-August in the Hawkeye State, but carrots in a rainbow of colors can be found farm fresh from May through November. Voices X 2014

Voices X, the anniversary exhibit of Voices from the Warehouse, is a month-long art exhibit and cultural event located in a re-purposed industrial warehouse within Dubuque, Iowa’s Historic Millwork District. Voices from the Warehouse is a grass-roots art movement wrought by distinctive artists and like-minded advocates.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all 18+ artists

MEDIA: All media–ideally suited for the transformative art experience, which includes installations, video, two- and three-dimensional art.

DEADLINE: March 1, 2014

NOTIFICATION: April 15, 2014

ENTRY FEE: No fee for 5 to 10 images

AWARDS: Voices X is pleased to support the artists by offering a $300 stipend to each artist selected for the show, which will take place September 6 through October 4, 2014. Prizes have been increased for this anniversary event to $2,500 Best in Show cash prize, with $1,000 and $500 for place and show.

I loosely plan a weekly menu each week by making sure there are at least seven proteins, seven green vegetables and a handful of starches available in the kitchen. From those offerings, I try to make every week different. But, since the proteins are almost always a couple of versions of same pork, beef, chicken and/or fish, making 52 different menus a year is a stretch. And, I might add that there are only so many ways to prepare zucchini & broccoli. But this next Call is the 52nd time this Call has been offered, and I promise the result has been different each and every time. Maybe this is THE opportunity for you…

JUROR: Born in New York and educated at the acclaimed Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Vera Barnett moved to Texas in 1985. She began using pool toys as still life subjects, but felt a desire for more emotional and personal subjects. Her solution was to create her own models from sewn plastic. Barnett’s process yields paintings injected with emotions that are authentically human, yet fabricated through completely synthetic materials.

AWARDS: Cash awards totaling over $3,000 will be given out for 1st through 3rd places and purchase awards! Awards will be announced at the opening reception on May 3, 2014.

SALES: BAL retains a 30% commission of the sale price of work sold during the exhibition. BAL will collect payment and state sales tax.

CALL for ENTRIES: Ivyside

Cheese food is not cheese. You’re allowed to like American cheese; feel free. But, don’t take comfort in the idea that you are eating a natural cheese. It is manufactured from milk, whey, milkfat, milk protein concentrate, whey protein concentrate, saturated oils; emulsifiers, salt & artificial coloring–and that’s assuming you aren’t consuming a diet variety. Think of it this way…if the cheese can’t stand alone, then maybe it shouldn’t have the spotlight in any of your meals. This next Call is looking for a big cheese (or six) to put in the spotlight. Are you a big cheese?

Check out this Call for Entries from Penn State Altoona (Altoona, PA) for the Ivyside Juried Art Competition for solo shows at the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts. The entry fee is only $10 for up to 24 images. This is a great academic opportunity at a really low price!

I have always preferred chocolate in my stomach, not necessarily on my face–unless it got there on its way to my stomach. But as my journey toward a simpler life continues. I am fascinated by the foodstuffs that can be used for non-culinary purposes. I’ve used coconut oil on my hair and avocado on my skin for a long time. But did you know that you can use cocoa as a colorant in a food-based face powder. I’d put on weight if I had to breathe in the smell of cocoa all day. But, it will still make me look at what I wear on my face differently. Hopefully this next Call will make you look at faces a little differently too…

Portraiture is one of the most prevalent and widely interpreted art genres. The Kiernan Gallery seeks portfolio submissions for a solo exhibition as its Spring Featured Artist.

MEDIA: All 2D non-photographic media that depicts the subject’s expression, personality, or mood are encouraged.

AWARDS: The Spring Featured Artist will have their work occupy the entirety of a room in the main gallery. The featured artist will receive: A one-month solo show, a feature on The Kiernan Gallery’s blog and website, and an electronic show card designed and distributed by The Kiernan Gallery.

SALES: Kiernan Gallery no longer takes commission on sold works. The Kiernan Gallery DOES still have incentive to sell your work. The gallery was founded by an emerging artist, and recognizes the importance of selling work; they believe that if artists are paying a submission fee, the gallery should not also take a portion of the sale. They do reserve the right to negotiate 20% in order to make a sale.

Food is a common experience for us all, but I find that creative people tend to purposefully try to indulge all the senses at once–musicians, writers, dancers AND visual artists. So how perfect is this next Call that centers around a slightly food-obsessed musician. If you don’t know his work (Eggs & Sausage is one of my favorites, but Chocolate Jesus was infamously controversial), do your homework…you won’t be sorry.

This open call is for all artists who have found themselves deeply moved, enraptured, bemused or inspired by Tom Waits. Has his music ever transported you to a dusty desert town or an abandoned train yard or a glowing, gritty neon rainy city street filled with steam? Listening to his music do you come away from the experience with a flash of inspiration embodying his lyrics? Like Tom Waits, do you tell tall tales and spin yarns with your work?

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all US artists

MEDIA: Sculpture, painting, drawing, photo, printmaking, ceramics, assemblage, collage, mixed media, fiber art & artist books. This exhibition cannot accept jewelry, video, film, performance art, installation and works requiring an external electrical source.

ENTRY FEE: $35 for up to 3

JUROR: graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1977. Her background as an artist has assisted in her understanding of the perspectives and idiosyncrasies of the art world.

For over twenty-five years the Andrea Schwartz Gallery has supported work that is challenging and at the forefront of contemporary practice, representing a select group of mid-career artists from the Bay Area and throughout the country. The range of work includes paintings, works on paper, photography and sculpture.

AWARDS: A Juror’s Award ribbon and certificate will be presented to three works that express the most imaginative interpretation of the theme. There are two opportunities to get into this show. The juror will select works that will be exhibited in the Arc Gallery at 1246 Folsom Street and on the Arc On-line Gallery. The juror will also select works that will be shown in the Arc On-line gallery only. This allows for more works to be seen beyond the 1,000 square feet physical limitation of the gallery.

Dickens has previously held curatorial posts at the Jewish Museum in New York, the Guggenheim Museum and the Dallas Museum of Art. Dickens holds degrees from Yale University and Columbia University.

AWARDS: Best in Show $250. Minimum prize fund $600.

SALES: The Berkeley Arts Council will retain a 30% commission on all sales. Works may not be removed during the exhibition.

My mother loves to read. I grew up in a house full of books–including cook books. Maybe I’ll add one of my own cookbooks to her collection some day. One of my favorite cookbooks is The Vegetarian Epicure. The author, Anna Thomas once said, “We all eat, and it would be a sad waste of opportunity to eat badly.” That one statement changed my life and how I approach feeding both myself and my family. I am fat obsessed–not with the fat ON me but with the fat IN my food. In October of 2013, I threw away my weight scales. I’m done. My familial relationship with diabetes and my allergy to wheat has forced a reduction of many of the starchy treats I have always loved. But, beautiful, luscious fats like butter and coconut oil have increased to help ease the transition. I have given up my fruit with mean ban. That’s right–for years, I have had a problem with fruit and meat together. I tend to prefer fruits a little chilled, and I prefer meat at least room temperature, but preferably warm. As you might imagine juxtaposing the two only highlighted their differences. But, I’ve come around. As I have come to eating local (and organic, when possible) fruit, I am starting to prefer it room temperature. So, now oranges, apples, pears and more are showing up in my curries and stirfrys more and more often. Juxtaposition is all the rage for this next Call too. Great theme…

Juxtapose

The composition of
two or more elements
within a photograph,
emphasizing either the
similarity or dissemblance
between them.

One of the most effective ways to express ideas photographically is to compare and contrast subjects visually. Placing contrasting elements side-by-side adds interest to a photograph and holds the viewer’s attention. Opposites such as: large and small, light and shadow, happy and sad, smooth and rough, new and old, horizontal and vertical, still and motion. Each one of these examples draws the viewer in, makes them curious about the story, why is that person happy while the other one is sad? How did that cat managed to get in amongst all of those dogs? Why are these two seemingly unrelated objects set in the same frame?

Explore complex or simplistic incongruity, opposites and contradictions, layered imagery, and observe the addition and subtraction of context. Counterbalance can marry elements by placing them side-by-side, above or below each other, or layer them in the foreground, middle-ground and background just as slow shutter speeds can show the disparity of moving objects compared to static ones.

Explore the uniqueness
found in apposing
colors, textures, characters
& objects.

Juxtaposition plays a crucial role in creating expression in each of these areas and the photographs’ overall message and allure – so crucial that we feel it deserves an exhibit all it’s own.

JUROR: Kyohei Abe is Director and Chief Curator at the Detroit Center for Contemporary Photography in Detroit, Michigan. The Center offers exhibitions, both online and in its gallery space, as well as lectures, and workshops throughout the year. The mission is to promote contemporary fine art photography and provide a vital cultural resource to our visual community. Abe has been reviewing portfolios at national events including Filter Photo Festival, PhotoNOLA and Photolucida. He has been a juror for for Critical Mass since 2010. Abe is an artist whose works are part of the public collection of the Museum of Fine Art, Houston, TX, Detroit Institute of Art, Detroit, MI, The West Collection, Oak, PA as well as numerous private and corporate collections globally. He also has been an adjunct professor at College for Creative Studies in Detroit since 2005.

While inspired by a wide range of photography, Abe is most interested in seeing intelligent and coherent work displaying a fresh perspective.

AWARDS: All selected entries are included in a full color exhibit catalog & gallery exhibition. Juror’s Choice: 30×48″ image banner. People’s Choice – a free future entry.
