Juried Photography Exhibit

Juried by the Alibi Fine Art gallery owners, Adam Holtzman and Lucas Zenk. Exhibition of selected works will be displayed from July 9 to August 28, 2011.

ELIGIBILITY:Entrants must live within the United States at the time of submission.

MEDIA: All photographic mediums are eligible for submission to this juried exhibit.

DEADLINE: Received by May 13, 2011

NOTIFICATION: Accepted artists will be posted to the gallery website on May 27, 2011.

Editor’s Note: I have shouted from the rooftop many times that if you are willing to take my entry fee, you should at least take the time to send me an email notification. However, in light of their miniscule $15 entry fee, I’m going to forgive this one. How about you?

ENTRY FEE: The submission fee is $15 for up to 5 images (per submitter, not per image).

SALES: All work must available for sale, price determined by the artist. Alibi Fine Art Receives a 50% commission on any sale.

SUBMISSIONS: Digital submissions are preferred. Digital files must be in .jpg or jpeg format. Maximum file size should be no larger than 8” in the largest dimension with 150 dpi resolution (image quality 10).

File names should start with the applicant’s last name and be numbered to correspond with the checklist. Please number the files and checklist in the order you would like the images viewed. (example: NAME_3.jpg)

Digital submissions will NOT be returned.

SALTY BUT SWEET

I grew up with a single father from age 3 to 13, and it was a culinary adventure. One of my fondest memories is of weekend-long motorcycle trips when I was around 8. We’d climb on and hit the road. I would freeze in the morning early-morning air. My father’s solution? We’d stop at every other golden arches we could find for french fries and hot fudge sundaes. This next Call is a whole different way to celebrate two-wheeled freedom.

CALL for ENTRIES: Thunder at CAM

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists—painters, sculptors, photographers and printmakers—over 18 years of age. Artists are invited to submit up to three original works of art on any theme related to motorcycles. Works selected by jurors from submitted entries will be chosen on the basis of creative excellence and quality of execution. All works must be original and completed within the last two years. Coos Art Museum’s “Thunder at CAM – Motorcycles and Art” jurors will be the final authority on eligibility. Accepted works meant for wall hanging must be ready with all necessary hardware in place.

MEDIA: Paintings, Drawings, Hand pulled prints, etchings, serigraphs, Photography, Mixed media, Fiber & textiles, Wearable art (must supply display device), Small sculptures, Glass, Turned and carved wood and Jewelry. No Video, motion picture film, audio, computer generated digital works, giclée prints of original fine art or furniture.

ENTRY FEE: Artists may submit a total of up to three (3) submissions, with a non-refundable fee of $15 for the first submission plus $10 for the second submission plus $10 for the third submission. Include a check or money order made out to Coos Art Museum in the amount of $35.00, $25.00 or $15.00.

JURORS: Susan Lehman, Oregon artist and art educator, began life-long passion for motorcycles that began with her first ride on the back of a restored 1951 Vincent Black Shadow. Fans of British café-style racers, she and her husband have owned and ridden dozens of motorcycles. Susan’s formal art training was at California College of Arts in Oakland, CA. She has co-produced two juried art exhibitions for the museum.

Philip Koenen, Since an early age, Philip has had two passions; motorsports and film making. Among the founding students of the now famous Dodge College of Film and Media Arts at Chapman University, Philip was asked to join the Eisaman, Johns & Laws advertising agency to work on the U.S. Suzuki motorcycle account and later to be the Executive Producer for their Film and Television Department. In 1983, he joined the Stunt Driving Team, Driver’s Inc. the clientele of which included Ferrari, Jaguar, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha. In 1984 he left advertising to follow his passion for building and restoring automobiles. Today Philip continues to successfully operate Grand Touring Garage with a worldwide clientele.

Christiaan “Dutch” Mostert, is an internationally recognized watercolor artist. Born in Holland he received early training from his artist father. A full-time freelance artist since 1978, his travels through Europe, Africa the Middle East and the Pacific Rim countries have provided him with a wealth of subject matter for his works. Though known for marine subjects Dutch has also developed a love of classic vehicles.

Mike Boyle, is an avid collector of vintage Motorcycles. He began restoring cars and motorcycles in 1964. For 32 years he owned and operated a large repair and restoration business in San Diego. Since his move to Coos Bay in 2006 he does restoration work only on his own collections of cars and motorcycles.

Michael Holm, works primarily in digitally manipulated photography, printmaking and design. He has had a life-long interest in motorcycles. Mike received a BA in Art and photography from the University of California, Santa Cruz. He has been instrumental in the upcoming exhibition of motorcycles and motorcycle art.

AWARDS: First Place Award will receive cash prize of $500, Second Place Award will receive cash prize of $350, Third Place Award will receive cash prize of $250 and Four Honorable Mention ribbons will also be awarded.

SALES: Works in the exhibition may be available for sale. Artist agrees to donate 30% of any sale as commission to Coos Art Museum.

INSTALLATIONS: Hauntings at The Soap Factory

Did your parents peel grapes and pretend they were eyeballs at Halloween? Mine either, but I always wish they had. I wanted oiled spaghetti for worms and icecubes with plastic bugs, chocolate covered crickets… the whole nine yards. Alas, it is too late now. Or is it? Live our your Halloween fantasies by designing a creepy installation for one of the country’s premier Halloween events.

CALL for SUBMISSIONS:
Haunted Basement

The Soap Factory is now accepting proposals for The Soap Factory’s 2011 Haunted Basement. Considered the premier haunted event in the Minnesota, The Soap Factory’s infamously creepy and legitimately haunted basement is a perfect canvas for creating immersive terror environments. Each year they seek new ideas, fresh perspectives and unexpected scares.

A limited number of room or environment designs and costume concepts will be accepted for The Soap Factory’s 2011 Haunted Basement. Accepted applicants will have the creative freedom to design and fabricate a room or costume for The Haunted Basement.

Although selected artists are expected to see their project through from conception to completion from May through August, artists will not be alone in this venture.

The Soap Factory has excellent resources for gathering supplies, and…

A small army of staff and volunteers

…that will advise and assist you on realizing your vision. This includes set, sound, tech and lighting designers, wardrobe, hair and make-up artists….even scent engineers who can make custom smells!

DEADLINE: April 1, 2011 This is not a post-mark deadline, packages or emails must arrive by April 1st at the latest. Use only US Postal Service.

MEDIA: Installation

NOTIFICATION: If you qualify, you will be contacted for interviews on April 9th.

JURORS: Kashya Hildebrand founded her gallery in Geneva in 2001. Since 2004 the gallery has been located in the center of Zurich, featuring a large exhibition space. Daneyal Mahmood is the owner of the Daneyal Mahmood Gallery. The DMG program focuses on defining the normative through investigating its deviations. Issues of politics, culture, science and history are frequently addressed – the social aspect of the program being as central as the aesthetic. There is a commitment to craftsmanship and a love of spectacle throughout. Mediums include multi-media installation, sculpture, painting, drawing and photography.

Peter Surace opened RARE Gallery in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District in 1998. The gallery moved to Chelsea in 2003 and has occupied its current space on West 27th Street since 2009. From the beginning, RARE has been dedicated to fostering the careers of emerging artists to help them gain a firm footing in the contemporary art market place.

ARTIST RESIDENCY: Torpedo Factory Art

PICKLE ME TINK!

I almost moved to Paducah, Kentucky. When I was deciding where to move, I tripped across their Artist Relocation Program. I visited Paducah and FELL IN LOVE with a huge pickle/tamale factory from the early 1900s. Fate interceded, and I ended up in Gatlinburg. But, I find myself drawn to factories over and over again. This Call for Applications details another great use for an old factory.

Check out this great Call for Applications for the Torpedo Factory Art Center’s Visiting Artist Program. This is a great opportunity for studio space, a workshop and lecture for your resume and a chance to sell your work in one of the coolest galleries ever! You don’t have much time, so hurry…

VISITING ARTIST PROGRAM: Torpedo Factory Art Center

Opportunities for emerging and experienced artists residencies for one, two, or three months in the Torpedo Factory Art Center between June 1 and August 31, 2011.

The projects undertaken by Visiting Artists for this self-directed, creative residency must be compatible with available working studio spaces and facilities. The Visiting Artist will have the opportunity for informal collegial exchanges with Torpedo Factory artists. Each Visiting Artist is also asked to conduct a workshop, give a lecture, or provide a demonstration, elaborating on his/her work. Visiting Artists will be able to display and sell original artwork, and will be provided with workspace. They will pay one-half of the rent of the studio (between $130 and $400 depending on the studio). The TFAC does not have any shared equipment or facilities; Visiting Artists are responsible for all expenses and arrangements related to art materials, equipment, transportation, housing or other requirements.

ELIGIBILITY: The Visiting Artist Program is open to all emerging and experienced visual artists over the age of 21 who are not currently Torpedo Factory leaseholders. Applicants provide evidence of artistic accomplishment through the submitted images and application form. By applying, applicants agree to: (1) work in front of, and interact with, the public; (2) work in the studio five days a week during the period of the residency (because most of their visitors come on the weekends, they request that Visiting Artists work on those days); and (3) commit to follow the Visiting Artist Program requirements.

DEADLINE:
By February 28 provide a completed Application Form, CD with 15 images, and a list of the images.

ENTRY FEE:
There is no application fee.

JURY PROCESS: Selections will be made in a two-step process. The juror is F. Lennox Campello, author of the blog Daily Campello News and of the forthcoming 100 Artists of Washington. He is also an artist, curator, and former gallerist. He will review all applications and select a group of finalists who present evidence of artistic merit based on submitted applications. The Visiting Artist Program Committee will then match as many finalists as possible to spaces available, taking into account the applicant’s requirements, attributes of the specific studios available, and the goal of providing a range of media experiences to their visiting public. Visiting Artists will occupy studios temporarily vacated by resident artists.

ABOUT THE TORPEDO FACTORY: The Torpedo Factory Art Center (TFAC) is one of the largest visual art centers in the U.S. and is home to more than 140 visual artists working in 82 studios. CALL for ENTRIES: Pyramid Atlantic Art

Calling all printmakers, papermakers/paper artists & book artists! Pyramid Atlantic Art Center is proud to announce their Annual Juried Exhibition. Selected works will be on exhibit in the Washington Printmaker’s Gallery, located on the second floor of Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, from April 1-22, 2011. Three awards, sponsored by Plaza Artist Materials, will be granted.

MEDIA: Printmakers, papermakers, paper artistst, and book artists. All prints, works on/in paper, and book arts will be considered by the juror.

ENTRY FEE: A maximum of five original works may be entered at no cost to current members. But if you are not a member, you will have to pay a $40 membership fee.

JUROR: Alec Simpson is a visual artist and Director of the Brentwood Arts Exchange – a facility in Prince George’s County, Maryland which has a rotating exhibition gallery, craft store and multi-purpose space used to present art classes of varying kinds. Simpson previously served as Deputy Director of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. He has been a consultant to the National Endowment for the Arts and the Connecticut Commission on the Arts, as well as a panelist for a number of state and local arts agencies.

CALL for ENTRIES: Photowork 2011

MY HEAD SPINS ROUND

How food looks matters. There is a reason split pea soup turned up as vomit in The Exorcist. I love the taste, but let’s face facts folks… split pea soup looks gross. There is no great surprise that kids find brussel sprouts and wild rice and oatmeal don’t appeal to a large segement of the population. Why eat peas when you can eat Peeps? I get it. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This Call for Entries will give you a chance to show beauty (or not) from your perspective.

Photowork 2011

Photowork 2011 is a premier exhibition of new photographic images. The show is visited by art appreciators from a five-county area including parts of Connecticut and New York City. As a National show, this exhibition brings together photographers from across the country with artists from 30 to 40 states represented each year.

The spirit of the show is a juxtaposition of traditional styles and cutting edge images. The show celebrates the photograph both as FINE ART and as SOCIAL COMMENTARY. Winners in the past have included traditional 35mm photographs, silver gelatin prints, digital prints and even pinhole camera pictures! Cash prizes are also awarded.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to any USA artist for work completed in the last 4 years.

JUROR: Prior to the Guggenheim, Lauren Hinkson was senior cataloguer for the Department of Prints and Illustrated Books at the Museum of Modern Art, NY, and a fellow at the Museum of Art at RISD. She received her degree in Art History and Architecture from Brown University.

AWARDS: Recipients of cash awards will be determined by the juror and announced at the opening reception. Artists need not be present to win.

ABOUT THE BARRETT ART CENTER: The Barrett Art Center building is the heart of the association and is still used for administrative purposes. It also provides a meeting place for art enthusiasts and artists alike to view, exhibit, discuss, create, and learn about art.

The Center hosts a changing exhibition program devoted to fine contemporary and traditional works of art. Prestigious national juried shows in contemporary art (New Directions) and photography (Photo Works) have each been held annually at the Art Center for more than 20 years, attracting hundreds of submissions from across the country.

Other events held annually at the Center include shows featuring works by members and by our faculty and students, as well as topical shows (such as the recent Latin American show). The Center also provides space for classes.

UPDATE: The Soap Factory Open Call

I AM PROUD

Many of you submitted work to The Soap Factory Open Call. That is reason enough for me to be proud. However, I am even more proud that so many of you followed rule #2 of How to Cook: A watched pot never boils.

Despite the fact that the Call said they would notify in March, many of you are antsy and want to know more. Instead of calling or emailing the gallery, you emailed me. No problem. I publicly stated that I was submitting, and I did. So, I understand why you would email me wondering if I had been notified regarding my entry.

Well, I had reason to converse with Lillian Egner, the Program and Volunteer Manager for The Soap Factory regarding a different call that I will post this week, and I asked, “Is the open call still notifying in March? My readers are excited and just want to know.” Here is her reply:

“They will be notified in March, you’re right. We’re actually in the process of sorting through those submissions this week. There are several sessions of sorting and discussion. There are some terrific entries. Thank you so much for all of the support you provide for these open calls. Its one of the things I like best about working at The Soap Factory, but we couldn’t do it without awesome sites like yours.”

“If people have questions you can tell them this. Everyone, yeses and nos are all contacted. So no one will be left wondering. We do the majority of notification by email.”

Bravo to The Soap Factory!

In addition to providing stipends and some travel expenses to artists, they also still take the time to notify everyone. There is a disturbing new trend amongst a few galleries to just post the results on the gallery’s webpage, and I don’t like it. If you can take my money, you can take the time to send me an email. So, thank you to The Soap Factory for caring.

Make sure you all email me with the results– good or not so good! And remember, rejection letters can get you a free entry to the $2 Art Contest!

CALL for ENTRIES: Supersize

One of my favorite parts of fine dining is the amuse bouche. There is something about knowing that you are only going to get one taste, one bite of a delicious dish that makes you savor the experience. It is no wonder that the many of the best foods I have ever tasted were an amuse bouche. This next Call for Entries invites you to do exactly the opposite…wallow in the excess of the supersized.

Check out this Call for Entries from the Annmarie Sculpture Garden (an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institute) for Supersize: Bigger is Better?. The entry fee is only $20 for up to four pieces, and this is an excellent opportunity to GIVE IN TO EXCESS. Take a look!

CALL for ENTRIES: Supersize: Bigger is Better?

What fuels our fascination with obscene quantities and obsessive amounts? From supersized to overstuffed, from bulk to buy-one-get-one, we are in a constant quest for more, more, more; yet we decry the after-effects of over-consumption. How do artists interpret these ideas in their work? This exhibition explores the art of the supersized. The jury seeks work that tackles the absurdity of art and life on a grand-scale. From humorous depictions to critical commentary, the jury seeks work that address these issues through their scale, proportion, and witty approach.

Supersize will be installed in the spacious Mezzanine Gallery of Annmarie Sculpture Garden’s Arts Building. With over 4000 sq ft of exhibition space, moveable walls, high ceilings, tile floors, an Arakawa hanging system, Internet access, and electricity, the Mezzanine Gallery can accommodate all sizes and types of installations. As Annmarie includes a thirty acre sculpture garden, outdoor works will also be included in Supersize.

ELIGIBILITY: All media types are welcome. The exhibition is open to all artists age 18 and older working in the U.S. Video entries must be submitted on DVD, playable on QuickTime or RealPlayer, and no more than 30 minutes in length.

DVD or computer based works must be exhibited on equipment provided by artist. Internet access is available. Bases and pedestals must well-balanced and sturdy. Annmarie has a limited number of bases available, please inquire. All frames must be black or silver and simple in design. All works that will be hung on the wall must have brackets that work with the Arakawa hanging system. More information on this system will be provided upon acceptance.

DEADLINE: March 31, 2011 is the deadline for your application.

NOTIFICATION: Artists will be notified of final acceptance status via email by April 14, 2011.

ENTRY FEE: Artists must submit a $20 non-refundable entry fee for up to four entries. Entry fee must be paid by check, money order, or credit card. Each entry must be submitted with three images of the artwork, including one overall view of the artwork, one detail shot, and one installation shot.

ABOUT the ANNMARIE SCULPTURE GARDEN: An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, Annmarie is a thirty-acre public sculpture garden and arts center located in scenic Solomons, Maryland, on the Chesapeake Bay. The sculpture garden features a walking path which meanders through the forest, past permanent and loaned sculpture, including more than thirty works on loan from the Smithsonian Institution and the National Gallery of Art. The garden also presents a variety of special events, gallery shows, and engaging public art programs. The new Studio School offers creative classes taught by a talented faculty. The award-winning Arts Building, which opened in May ‘08, is a 15,000 sq.ft. museum-grade exhibition space that includes two large galleries, a gift shop, café, and a sunny patio that offers lovely views of the outdoor sculpture.

MY BLACK THUMB

I want to grow my own food. I WANT to, but when the day starts, I pull on my stilettos and head off to my air-conditioned office where all attempts at growing house plants have withered and died.

There are no secret overalls and garden clogs in my closet.

I don’t even have fruit trees in my yard. My husband and I are thinking of building a shipping container house; maybe I should look for property with fruit trees. Stilettos AND home-grown food. If you don’t have a green thumb, this Call will let you take inspiration from nature even if you didn’t grow it.

Botanical Art Show

K.A.S. Gallery in Louisville, Kentucky is seeking entries of botanical art for a national exhibition, May 13 – June 24, 2011.

ELIGIBILITY:
Open to all artists

MEDIA: Mixed media, photograpahy, oil, acrylic, lithograph, and drawings

DEADLINE:
March 28, 2011

NOTIFICATION: 30 days after deadline

ENTRY FEE: No more than 5 entries may be submitted per artist. 1 entry $15; each additional entry is $5. Entry fees are non-refundable.

SALES: K.A.S. Gallery will add a 30% commission fee to the selling price of an art piece. Should your work sell, K.A.S. will retain a 30% commission. K.A.S. will collect sales tax from buyer and pay KY State sales tax.

AWARDS: Accepted artists may be considered for future group and/or solo shows.
