I have produced my fair share of leaded pastries–from puck-like biscuits to unintentionally unleavened breads.  I thought it was just me, but I found out that part of the problem was my oven.  if your baking powder doesn’t full work until 425°, and your oven lacks the last 50º because it isn’t calibrated correctly, then you’re going to fail. It doesn’t matter if your oven is 25 years or 5 days old; a digital oven thermometer can save your baking. Trust me.  This next Call offers a little more digital magic.  Take a look…

His career started working with video guru Nam June Paik at Media Study/Buffalo in 1975, before the birth of the personal computer.  Mr. Gartel taught Andy Warhol how to use the Amiga Computer when Warhol received the commission to produce the Debbie Harry album cover. 

For the last 4 years GARTEL has been creating Art Cars the first  one being the Electric Roadster for Tesla.  Mr. GARTEL was the Featured Guest of the New York  International Auto Show with his own Pavilion of 30,000 square feet.  Since he has produced over two dozen one-of-a-kind vehicles.

AWARDS:  Exhibition of selected works by each winning artist, July 29th – August 23rd at the b.j. spoke gallery.

JUROR:  Coming off of a 25 year commercial photography career, Peter Liepke is now a fine art photographer & print maker residing in upstate NY with his wife & 2 sons.  His commercial & fine art images have appeared in almost every major publication in the U.S.

His current series uses NYC for inspiration.  While at the same time he enjoys producing finely crafted prints in the rare challenging turn of the century processes of Gum Bichromate or Platinum Palladium from waxed paper negatives.  His artistic philosophy is rooted in light, beauty, composition & craftsmanship.

AWARDS: 45 to 50 images will be selected for exhibition and a Blurb full color catalogue. Awards are $325 for Juror’s Award, $250 and an exhibition catalogue for Director’s Award, 5 Honorable Mentions each receiving an exhibition catalogue & $100 for Visitors’ Choice Award.

AWARDS: This is a free one-month residency.  Your residency offers free WiFi, maid service, $1,000 pesos food stipend & utilities. You will are responsible for laundry, transportation, entertainment & add’l food. International calls can be made via skype.

I’m craving purple potatoes.  Potatoes have become scarce in my house lately.  Paranoid about my family’s long history of diabetes, we are trying to limit our starch intake to see if my current symptoms can be controlled through diet.  Because we already cut out gluten, I don’t really miss bread.  We’ve never consumed a lot of rice & prefer spaghetti squash or zucchini noodles to pasta.  But oh how I miss the potatoes– the beautiful, majestic purple ones particularly.  I’m sneaking them in as the crust for quiche & pot pies, but the chips & fries & mash are all gone.  I have to reserve all things majestic for this next call.  Love this one…

Not every weed is to be plucked and discarded.  Hopefully no one is spraying chemicals on their garden--either to fertilize OR remove pests; however, I DO want to encourage you to remember that not every weed needs to be removed either.  Chickweed is a perfect example.  If you’re lucky enough to have it sprout in your garden, don’t weed it…eat it.  And you don’t have plant a garden in an open field to find this gem; it even grows in the cracks of sidewalks.  No really.  This next Call DOES, however, make use of an open field.  Investigate…

She received a B.A. in Art from Yale, and an M.F.A. from Indiana University.  Her public art projects include mosaics commissioned by the MTA for the Houston Street subway station in Manhattan and roundels for the Royal Caribbean Cruise Terminal at the Port of Miami for Miami-Dade Art in Public Places.
