We know that I love a theme…from food to art shows. I went grocery shopping the other day and EVERYTHING I bought was marked “bold” or “hot” or “spicy.” However, I truly understand the privilege of interpretation. My version of hot (4 peppers on the Thai scale) is certainly different that my eleven year old that thinks Bold Manwich is spicy, ha. This next call is completely up to YOUR interpretation and choice. The options are wide open…

CALL for ENTRIES: Wide Open 2

BWAC has a truly unique gallery – a massive Civil War-era warehouse on the Red Hook waterfront in Brooklyn, NY. Its enormous space affords them the opportunity to exhibit really huge work, and they welcome it.

They will be using 8,000 square feet for this show to exhibit work from artists from all around the country, work in all size, subject, and medium (it’s completely wide open).

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all residents of the U.S. and its Territories 18 years of age or older.

MEDIA: This is a juried exhibition for artists working in all traditional and non-traditional 2D and 3D media, except for film/video. All artwork must be original in concept, design and execution. Note: Crafts, kit work or reproductions after original works in other media (such as giclee), unless used as part of a mixed media work, will not be considered. No work done in class or under supervision is eligible.

ENTRY FEE: Early Bird Submissions (through January 4, 2011): $45.00 for up to three (3) images ($60.00 if mailed) plus $5.00 for each additional image.
Submissions between January 5 and January 17: $65 for up to three (3) images, plus $5 for each additional image. All submissions must be online during this period.

DEADLINE: All entries must be registered/received by midnight, January 17, 2011.

NOTIFICATION: Via e-mail on Friday, January 28, 2011, or mailed on that date for entries without e-mail information.

JUROR: Nathan Trotman, Associate Curator, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum of Art, joined the curatorial staff in 2001. He holds a Master of Philosophy from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, where he focused on performance, photography, and time-based art, and is a graduate of the Whitney Museum’s Independent Study Program.

Among the exhibitions he has curated are Haunted: Contemporary Photography / Video / Performance; Catherine Opie: American Photographer, and he served as assistant curator for Spanish Painting from El Greco to Picasso: Time, Truth and History; exhibitions on David Smith, Richard Serra and Constantin Brancusi; and the acclaimed Matthew Barney: The Cremaster Cycle.

AWARDS:

BEST of SHOW: $1000.00 At the Opening Reception, the artist whose work is juried as ‘Best of Show’ by Nathan Trotman will receive a $1,000 cash prize and a complimentary one-year BWAC membership.

PEOPLES’ CHOICE: $500.00 The artist whose work is voted ‘Best’ by attendees at the Show Opening will receive a $500 cash prize and a complimentary one-year BWAC membership

CURATORS’ CHOICE: $250.00 The artist whose work the Show Curators, (Anna Annus Hagen, Therese Urban, Scott Henstrand) choose for excellence will receive a $250.00 cash prize and a complimentary one-year BWAC membership.

CERTIFICATES: Certificates will be awarded in the following categories: Painting: Best in Oil, Acrylic and Watercolor; Photography: Best in Traditional and Digital formats; Pastel / Drawing / Print / Graphic media: Best in Classical and Computer-aided; and Best in Mixed Media, Sculpture, Assemblage, and Installation.

Things tend to be a little offbeat in my studio. I love the quirky …the odd …the naturally puzzling. Things also tend to be a little offbeat in my kitchen. But, we’ve taken sea urchin off the menu since Jon is allergic to shellfish. Maybe it isn’t a problem, but I really can’t decide. This next call invites you to revel in the weirdness of it all.

1650 Gallery is hosting a juried photography exhibition: THAT’S WEIRD … Let’s face it, it happens. You ingest a CF card, you develop a roll of film. Everything looks fine at first… there’s Aunt Millie. Oh, and there’s the dog being cute. And then you see it. “Who took THAT?” you say to yourself… “What IS that?” is the next question out of your mouth. Then it dawns on you. YOU took that. And you liked it. You KNOW what it is… THAT’S WEIRD! We all have a few photographic skeletons in our closet and NOW is the time to dust them off and send them to the 1650 Gallery!

This month 1650 Gallery welcomes your oddest and most offbeat photographic moments. Animal, vegetable or mineral. Send them your haha, your most embarrassing or your “what the?!!” moments.

Or how about that scary shot of Uncle Jim and the mailman eating that donut? Anything goes! You see, there really are no rules as long as whatever it is… THAT’S WEIRD!!!

JUROR: Billy the Mime is an avid photo collector and professional weirdo. He has amazed and disturbed audiences across the country with his offbeat performances. The New York Times called Billy the Mime’s live show “politically incorrect” and “shockingly unsentimental.”

FREE FRAMING: They offer free matting and framing for accepted photographs that fit their pre-cut mat sizes for the duration of the exhibition. Precut mat sizes are 11″x14″ mats with an 8″x10″ window, or 16″x20″ mats with an 11″x14″ window and 20″x24″ mats with a 16″x20″ window. They will also print your photo for a nominal fee if you are accepted into the show and would prefer not to mail a print.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: Along with the completed application form, please submit your work according to the following guidelines: They only accept digital files. All digital images should be provided as jpgs only, 72 ppi, image width not to exceed 1024 pixels on the longest side. Files should be titled as follows: LastName_FirstName_1Title.jpg The number should correspond with the number on the application form. Some of the most popular culinary creations in my house come from leftovers. We frequently put a whole chicken in the crock pot on Sundays, and on Mondays we usually have “Chicken Something.” Just because you’ve tried something once doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give it another try. This next post has had three lives on AAAD.

Now I’m giving it one more stir in the Crock Pot because they have extended the deadline for another week. Beers.Lambert Contemporary Art is proud to curate an exhibition for Gift Gallery, at its extraordinary location on London’s primary gallery row, Vyner Street.

I Am Solitary – London, is a counterpart and extension of the related Beers Lambert exhibition that took place in Nottingham, in September of 2010.

This collaboration with Gift Gallery seeks progressive contemporary art that responds to questions of identity and individuality.

The exhibition aims to highlight ideas and articulations relating to a conceptual and aesthetic understanding of individuality, isolation, and identity in a world typified by conflict, disillusionment, and change.

The work submitted should critically & aesthetically challenge the reception of these themes & truly push the direction of contemporary art.*

ART PUBLICATION: Hunter & Cook Magazine

After my post referencing Chef Cat Cora and the inequality of kitchen roles between the sexes, I received an amusing amount of email about “hunters” versus “gatherers.” I am still writing an art blog, right? Too funny. Can you even imagine what would happen if I, in my 4″ heels, had to gather my food from somewhere other than the grocery store? I can hear you laughing. Why are we talking about hunting and gathering? Well this next Call came to my attention, and I couldn’t resist.

Check out this Call for Submissions from Hunter and Cook, a Canadian-produced contemporary art magazine. You know how I love art publicaton and am constantly preaching its merits. But, the cherry on the sundae is that these editors don’t want your resume or statement…just your work. That is just the way we all like it, eh? Take a look…

CALL for SUBMISSIONS: Hunter & Cook Magazine

Hunter and Cook Magazine is accepting submissions for one artist to do a four page project in their next issue – Number 8. Hunter and Cook is a curated contemporary art magazine, produced in Toronto by artists Jay Isaac and Tony Romano.

Hunter & Cook Magazine is widely distributed across Canada (including Chapters and Indigos) the US and Europe and attends major fairs such as Art Basel, TIAF, NADA, and Printed Matters Art Book Fair at PSI Moma.

Hunter & Cook is subscribed to by major North American institutions such as the AGO, MOMA New York, The Musee D’art Contemporain, Montreal etc and is viewed by a wide audience which includes numerous gallerists, writers, curators and collectors.

DEADLINE: December 15, 2010

ENTRY FEE: The fee to enter is $35.00. Artists can submit as many projects as possible to Hunter & Cook, but each entry will cost $35.00.

NOTIFICATION: You will only be contacted if your project is chosen.

SUBMISSIONS: Specs for files are 4 pages in total in the order of 2 full color then 2 black and white, starting with a left page, ending on a right page. Page size is 9″wide x13″high (image size); however, file size of each page needs to account for bleed so please make your file 9.25″ x13.25″ at 300 dpi.

Please send as a tiff file in cmyk for color and grayscale for black and white. Please include files on a disc including titles, artist name and contact information. Nothing more is needed–no statements or resumes.

ARTIST RESIDENCY: Blue Sky Project

It is getting cold in the Smokies, folks…and I LOVE it. And I love to tell you about exotic getaways that will allow you to learn a new culture or climate. Remember the residency call for Roswell, NM? I was all set to bake alien shaped cookies (like these from organic bakery Beautiful Sweets). Well, this next Call for Residency applications is a great opportunity, and it may even be a new climate for you…but it isn’t likely to be any warmer.

Check out this Call for Submissions to the Summer Residency Blue Sky Project. This is an eight-week chance to make a difference with your art.

CALL for SUBMISSIONS:
Summer Residency Blue Sky Project

Blue Sky Project invites professional artists from around the world and Dayton-area teens to create new works of contemporary art. This eight-week Artist-in-Residence Program hosts artists who have a demonstrated commitment to innovation and exploration and are interested in collaborating with fellow artists and young people as a means of creating new works.

ELIGIBILITY: Visual Artists, Artist/Activists, Filmmakers, writers, dancers, musicians, theatre performers, and people working in other creative media are encourage to apply.

As a Blue Sky Artist-In-Residence, you will cross-pollinate with other practicing artists, collaborate with teens, expand your ideas and add artistic breadth and depth to the Dayton community.

LOCATION: Relocated for 2009 to Ohio from our original location in Illinois, artists gather for eight weeks from mid-June to mid August at the University of Dayton, located 2 miles from downtown Dayton.

DETAILS: Monday – Thursday, from 10-3:30 are devoted to intensive collaborations between each individual artist and a small group of six to eight local teen participants, culminating in a final exhibition. Artists-in-Residence invent the remaining structure, working together or individually on projects. Their hope is that the projects will seep out, intervene, enhance and impact the community.

SUBMISSIONS: Your recent studio practice & new ideas should provide the foundation for your activities. Because of the collaborative nature of Blue Sky, your project must have an open-ended structure.

BUDGET: Your project must be achievable in eight weeks, within a $1,000 budget (excluding final exhibition expenses) and must engage others in its articulation and production. The rest is up to you.

DEADLINE: January 17, 2011

Previous projects have included: sculptural sound installation, self-published zine of local interviews, performance, musical composition, dance installation, filmmaking, photographic re-imaginings of local sites and nature interventions. I love a good festival. I am going to Gatlinburg’s Annual Chili Cook Off this week and will stuff myself to the gills. Yum. I’m truly afraid to attend the Annual Ribfest (which also includes chicken wings)… I might not fit back into my car at the end. Think of all the festival food you could eat with these Calls for Entry.

Some folks love Art Festivals, and they can be an excellent opportunity for art sales if you know how to work it. Check out these Calls for Entry from the Celedon Fine Arts Festival, the Omaha Summer Arts Festival and the Monmouth Festival of the Arts. I don’t often post art festivals…so here’s three to make it up to those of you who love them!

CALL for ENTRIES: Feeling Festive

CELADON
Fine Arts Festival:

Artists are invited to apply to the three-day Celadon Fine Arts Festival, to compete for cash prizes totaling $3,000. The festival is produced by The Celadon Community Arts Trust Association and ARTworks, The Arts Council of Beaufort Port Royal & the Sea Islands. The goal of the May 20-22, 2011 juried show is to select and present the highest caliber of fine art and crafts to their knowledgeable and discriminating audience. OMAHA
Summer Arts Festival:

The mission of the Omaha Summer Arts Festival is to present a variety of high quality arts programs and exhibits in downtown Omaha for the general public to enjoy and appreciate. Application and jury fee must be submitted by midnight CST on Monday, January 10, 2011. The Omaha Summer Arts Festival is located in Downtown Omaha – Farnam Street from 10th to 15th Street. This location mixes the sophistication of the downtown Omaha skyline with the relaxing feel of the Gene Leahy park and lagoon. Enjoy trees, shade and waterfalls right in the middle of downtown Omaha. Approximately 135 artists will exhibit at the 2011 Summer Arts Festival. A total of 72 artists have been invited back from the 2010 show based on their onsite jury score. The remaining spaces will be filled by a jury panel that consists of up to four professionals with evaluating experience and one peer juror. For more information, visit their website!

MONMOUTH
Festival of the Arts:

The 41st Annual Monmouth Festival of the Arts, New Jersey’s largest art invitational, will take place April 9 through April 13, 2011 at Monmouth Reform Temple, 332 Hance Avenue, Tinton Falls. It begins with the Artists Reception on Saturday. The reception is a great opportunity to meet the artists, enjoy a catered cocktail party, and browse the works in all media by more than 200 artists. Visitors to the Opening Night Reception will also receive a ticket to attend other Festival activities, including artist demonstrations, children’s workshops, and evening series art lectures and music from Sunday through Wednesday. The application form plus a $20.00 non-refundable application fee for each medium made payable to MRT/MFA, must be received by the December 13, 2010 deadline. LOVE YOURSELF

Valentine’s Day has taken an odd turn at my house over the years. Gone are the roses, candy and candlelit dinners. In their place, my husband Jon and I now have some gourmet treat and a glass of wine and snuggle in for a good movie. It could be laziness on our parts, I suppose. But I prefer to think of it as comfort of knowing you are exactly where you want to be when you want to be there…unfettered by all the other expectations. This Valentine’s Day, be good to yourself and enter this next show by the deadline, February 14th, 2011.

Check out this Call for Entries for the 26th Annual Juried Competition known as the Tallahassee International. The entry fee is only $20, and academically juried shows are GREAT for your resume. Put your heart into it…

CALL for ENTRIES:
Tallahassee International 26TH Annual Juried Competition

The Tallahassee International is an annual juried competition organized by Florida State University Museum of Fine Arts. The competition is open to all media and is juried by a panel of faculty from within the College of Visual Arts, Theatre and Dance.

ELIGIBILITY: Artists are eligible to submit works without regard to sex, race, creed or national origin. Artists must be 18 years of age or older (current FSU CVATD faculty or students may not enter).

MEDIA: All media is eligible.

DEADLINE: February 14, 2011

ENTRY FEE: There is a $20.00 entry fee. A maximum of two (2) works per person may be submitted.

AWARDS: The jurors select the award winners from the actual works of art, after the exhibition has been installed. The First Place winner will receive $1,000.00 and the Second Place winner will receive $500.00. A color catalog of the Tallahassee International is produced, and all artists who enter will receive a copy. Accepted artists will each receive a set of 12 complimentary catalogs.

JURY PROCESS: The competition is juried by a panel of faculty members from the Florida State University College of Visual Arts, Theatre and Dance. Jurors select works based on their own merit and must agree the artist demonstrates skill within the chosen medium. Selections are made from the digital images, so it is imperative that quality images be provided to insure fair judging. Jurors and the FSU Museum reserve the right to reject, upon arrival, any work of unacceptable craftsmanship and quality not discernible in the image.

ABOUT THE MUSEUM: MoFA has a history of exciting projects—from lush painting to dynamic sculpture exhibitions, from challenging installations to provocative photography shows. Every season begins with an international competitive exhibition that embraces all media and every semester closes with the youth and exuberance of the graduating artist exhibitions.

They have examined the contact zone of Anglo and Native American cultures, the mystical side of Haitian folk painting, and the unsophisticated but intense works of outsider artists. The future promises exhibitions of equal caliber and interest.

CALL for ENTRIES: 2011 Nat’l Contemporary

BUFFALO…in brief.

When you think of Colorado and food, does it conjure images of snow bunnies and hot chocolate? Then clearly you need to revisit Colorado. When I think of Colorado, I think of Buffalo Burgers. Buffalo burgers, once a fringe food, have now found their place in everyday fare. In South Central Colorado, the buffalo burgers are unmatched. I wonder if there’s any chance buffalo will be on the menu at this next exhibit’s opening night…

Check out this Call for Entries for The Arts Center’s 14th National Juried & Invited Contemporary Exhibition at the Center for the Arts in Western Colorado. The entry fee is low, and I like the idea of a mix of invited and juried artists…that usually means a built in crowd for opening night. Take a look…

14th National Juried & Invited Contemporary Exhibition

Keeping with the tradition of the Contemporary Exhibit, juror Michael Chavez will select six to eight artists to join the exhibit as invited artists who will give us an exciting survey of established and emerging artists in the contemporary art fields of drawing, painting, photography and mixed media two-dimensional work.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists residing in the U.S.

MEDIA: Two-dimensional format in the disciplines of drawing, mixed media, painting, printmaking and photography. Artists may enter up to three works which use paint, photography, drawing materials, printmaking and mixed media as the focus of submissions.

ENTRY FEE: Non-refundable entry fees are $15 for one entry, $25 for two entries, and $30 for three entries, payable to WCCA upon entry.

DEADLINE: January 28, 2011

NOTIFICATION: March 17, 2011

AWARDS: $750 Best of Show, $450 First Place, $300 Second Place, and $250 Third Place

JUROR: Michael Chavez is the Curator of Exhibitions and Education at Foothills Art Center in Golden, Colorado. He has a BFA in sculpture from the University of Wyoming and an MFA in printmaking from the University of Kansas. Over the past 16 years he has worked at the Art Institute of Chicago, The Spencer Museum of Art and the University of Wyoming Art Museum. In addition to curatorial duties, Chavez is active in the Colorado art community serving on public art committees and judging several exhibitions for Colorado’s cultural institutions. Have you ever wondered why most women fill the family role of cook? (although not in my house) …But in the professional world most Chefs are men? Me too. I like being female, despite the issues…even in the South. Today I’m paying tribute to one of my favorite female Chefs, Cat Cora, who proves gender doesn’t matter…at least in this case. But we all know that gender does matter, especially in this next call for entries.

Check out this Call for Entries for Gender Matters/Matters of Gender from The Freedman Gallery at Albright College. Gender Matters/Matters of Gender

Ever since Judy Chicago and Miriam Schapiro organized the collective Womanhouse project in San Francisco in 1972, as well as Judy Chicago’s 1979 Dinner Party, shows centering on women’s reality have become a staple in galleries nationwide.

Gender Matters/Matters of Gender, expands this tradition to include works by artists of both sexes who work from a consciousness of how gender is reflected in art, how the artist’s gender influences her or his medium, and how gender often affects the circumstances in which the artist creates. This show will include a range of artists who make art which explores sexual identity, evolutions in biological reproduction and art which is sometimes informed by an awareness of gender based craft and traditions.

ELIGIBILITY: The exhibition is open to everyone. Entries must represent original works of art or design and represent or address the theme in some way.

JUROR: Judith Tannenbaum is the first Richard Brown Baker Curator of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design. From 1986 until 2000, she served as curator, associate director, and interim director at the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.

Tannenbaum has organized numerous exhibitions focusing on painting, photography, sculptural installations, and interdisciplinary work with a particular interest in connections between the visual and performing arts. Since moving to RISD, several projects, including “On the Wall: Wallpaper by Contemporary Artists” (2003), have focused on relationships between fine art and design.

What food reminds you of childhood? Cookies? Spaghetti? Taco Night? Nope, not for me. For me it is Krystals*. I spent a number of my younger years living alone with my Dad, and he didn’t really cook. So, my childhood was a blur of fast food…Krystal, Del Taco and Farmer John’s Smorgasboard. I am so not making this up BTW. But even though my childhood food memory is Krystal, I still LOVE them as an adult. Much the same with the theme for this next call for entries…

Check out the Call for Entries for Cartoon Cult from The Soundry, a former auto body shop that has been converted into a public coffee shop, art gallery, and shared studio space for artists and musicians. You still love cartoons; you know you do. This show is all hung, and the entry fee is low. All of that equals a great resume builder. Give it a try…

Here’s the Call for Entries for
Cartoon Cult

Cartoon Cult is an art show celebrating contemporary art forms of cartoons, comics, digital animation, illustration, anime, and videogames (emphasis on original characters).

ELIGIBILITY: Cartoon Cult is unjuried.

MEDIA: If you have any questions about what can be included in the show, please email Jennifer or Melissa at The Soundry.

ENTRY FEE: The submission fee is $25 and artists may submit up to 5 pieces. All work must be for sale and ready to hang or display.

DEADLINE: November 19, 2010

DELIVERY: November 23 – 30, 2010

The Gallery at the Soundry

The gallery at The Soundry occupies about one quarter of their total space. It’s a rough-around-the-edges kind of space with good lighting and comfortable seating.

They hang their member’s artwork in this area and offer it for sale. This is the place to go in Vienna, Virginia if you’re looking for work from emerging artists, or if you just want to kick back, sip a latte, and take in some new sights.

The artwork in the gallery changes regularly, and a large portion of their gallery space is set aside for installation works.

The garage atmosphere and undergound, working-studio feel give visitors an experience they’re guaranteed not to find anywhere in the region.

Make sure you hurry:

Submissions are due by November 19, 2010.

Delivery of art work is due to The Soundry by November 23 – 30, 2010.
