When I was in college, we chose wine based on the label–the LOOK of the label, ha.  The weirder the label, the better to try.  Never mind the rankings, descriptions or variety.  Nope, just label art.  See? Food & art have always been connected for me.  This next Call is a great opportunity for YOU to put your work on a wine label.  Save a college student from bad wine by making good art.  Give it a try…

Check out this Call for Entries from Terras Gauda Wineries (Galicia, Spain) & the Vigo Port Authority for the International Biennial Poster Design Terras Gauda.  No entry fee.  Huge cash awards.  And there is a well-documented history of winners to use as research.  Investigate…

CALL for ENTRIES: Garbage

KITCHEN

It isn’t about how little you spend; it is about how little you throw away.  That is the key to keeping our household food budget on track.  We throw very little away.  When celery goes limp or carrots dry out, we add them to the collection of chicken bones in the freezer to make stock.  I haven’t purchased broth or stock in years.  A little cream  makes a whole new meal from left overs.  Overly ripe fruits make fantastic preserves, coulees, granitas & trail mix.  Stale bread makes great croutons.  Don’t let throwing things away become the habit, recycle or re-use or re-invent it–even food.  This next Call wants your insight on garbage re-use & reduction.  Love this one…

BEANS

I don’t drink coffee.  For all of my open-palate talk, there are things I am simply not interested in consuming.  Coffee is one of those things.  For many of you, this is heresy, sacrilege, blasphemy.  I suspect it would be like my reaction to people that don’t like chocolate–incomprehensible. But, I break my own rules.  When I go to the “home” of something, I feel obligated to partake.  Don’t you have to drink coffee in Washington?  Maybe I could just visit Java Jive and listen to a few tunes in the giant coffee pot instead.  Or consume a little art just a couple of hours down the interstate.  I’m game. How about you?

Check out this Call for Entries from Sarah Spurgeon Gallery at Central Washington University (Ellensburg, WA) for Interstate, an exhibit where I-82 meets I-90.  All media and subject matter are eligible.  Take a look…

FILTERED

Mellow, slow-cooked flavors are not usually just a product of slow cooking.  There are special ingredients that help meld flavors, that calm individual ingredients like onion into more flavorful combinations with other foods.  Home-made broths are excellent, and even a quality Worcestershire sauce can make a stove-top dinner feel like a slow-cooked delicacy.  My favorite is still sherry vinegar.  It is the penultimate calming pan de-glaze much like the neutral density filter, for which this Call is titled, is the most under-appreciated photo filter. I know–segue, right? 🙂  Take a look…
