As Spring heads toward Summer, my house is in full-on busy mode. With a teenager, 3+ business endeavors and a small-scale entertainment career, sometimes I just crave the opportunity to cook a full meal. Jeannine has published and lectured widely on American art, especially decorative arts & contemporary craft, and teaches the history of American ceramics at the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI.

Alice Fogel, Juror for Writers and Musicians, is the State Poet Laureate of New Hampshire (USA) 2014 – 2019 and recent winner of the Nicholas Shaffner Award for Music in Literature. Alice is the author of Strange Terrain: A Poetry Handbook for the Reluctant Reader (Hobblebush Books, 2009). Alice teaches creative writing and poetry at Keene State College, Keene, NH & Landmark College, Putney, VT.

AWARDS: This is a free one-month residency. Your residency offers free WiFi, maid service, $1,000 pesos food stipend & utilities. You will are responsible for laundry, transportation, entertainment & add’l food. International calls can be made via skype.

I’m craving purple potatoes. Potatoes have become scarce in my house lately. Paranoid about my family’s long history of diabetes, we are trying to limit our starch intake to see if my current symptoms can be controlled through diet. Because we already cut out gluten, I don’t really miss bread. We’ve never consumed a lot of rice & prefer spaghetti squash or zucchini noodles to pasta. But oh how I miss the potatoes– the beautiful, majestic purple ones particularly. I’m sneaking them in as the crust for quiche & pot pies, but the chips & fries & mash are all gone. I have to reserve all things majestic for this next call. Love this one…

Dr. Zona has received a number of national honors including the Gari Melchers Medal in 1996 for his outstanding contribution to American Art and culture. He is the author of numerous articles on art and art history and he is a major contributor to the recent Abrams publication Master Paintings from The Butler Institute of American Art.

Not every weed is to be plucked and discarded. Hopefully no one is spraying chemicals on their garden--either to fertilize OR remove pests; however, I DO want to encourage you to remember that not every weed needs to be removed either. Chickweed is a perfect example. If you’re lucky enough to have it sprout in your garden, don’t weed it…eat it. Unfortunately for my husband, my late Aunt Mildred has been visiting. Not literally–that would be creepy. The long standing joke in my family is that my Aunt Mildred never finished anything until the last possible moment. She hemmed her daughters’ prom dresses while they were in them trying to leave for the prom, and she left all of her kitchen cabinets wide open until she was finished with dinner. This week alone, I have left kitchen cabinets wide open 4 times. If I lose count, I only have to count the knots on his head. So, my family would say, “Hi, Mildred. Thanks for visiting.” This next Call is a far better way to be wide open. Trust me on this one…

JUROR: Dale Laitinen is an active workshop instructor and signature member of the National Watercolor Society and Watercolor West. Dale graduated from San Jose State University with a degree in Art in 1975, and has been a full-time practicing artist since 1985. Dale has been featured in The Artist’s Magazine, Watercolor Magic, Watercolor Magazine, Drawing Board Magazine and several books.

His paintings were featured in the October 2013 Southwest Art. Laitinen has two instructional videos, and this year is launching “Bristle” his online art magazine. His water-media and oil paintings were recently exhibited in a two person show at Petroglyphe Gallery in Mokelumne Hill, California, where he shows regularly. He is a past juror of many National and regional exhibitions including Watercolor West, Kentucky Watercolor Society, Utah Watercolor Society, Watercolor Society of Oregon, Red River Watermedia Show, Magnum Opus and many others.

AWARDS: $1,000 Best of Show, $500 1st Place & $250 2nd Place

Every photograph tells a story. When part of a body of work, the photograph takes on a new meaning, becoming part of a larger and more complete narrative. A portfolio allows the photographer to explore the complexities of their subject, and provide context that gives it richness and meaning that is more than the sum of its parts. The Kiernan Gallery is pleased to announce its third annual portfolio showcase.

ENTRY FEE: $50 for 10 – 15 images

JUROR: In 2010, Gordon Stettinius founded Candela Books, a publishing company, and, to date, they have produced three fine art photography monographs with more in the works. In 2011, Gordon founded a fine art photography gallery dedicated to featuring the work of nationally respected photographers. Candela Books + Gallery now inhabits a renovated 3,800 square foot building in the downtown arts district of Richmond, Virginia and is one of the leading advocates for fine art photography in the mid-Atlantic region.

As a photographer, Stettinius has been exhibited nationally and internationally over the last twenty years and his work can be found in numerous private and public collections. His work is represented by Robin Rice Gallery in New York and Page Bond Gallery in Richmond, Virginia. Stettinius is also an emeritus member of 1708 Gallery and an adjunct professor at Virginia Commonwealth University.

AWARDS: For this exhibition, four photographers will be selected to show their complete bodies of work.

SALES: Kiernan Gallery no longer takes commission on sold works. But, they DO still have incentive to sell your work. The Kiernan Gallery was founded by an emerging artist, and recognizes the importance of selling work; they believe that if artists are paying a submission fee, the gallery should not also take a portion of the sale. They do reserve the right to negotiate 20% in order to make a sale.

Rosalux is a cooperative art gallery that was founded in Minneapolis in 2002. The gallery is home to 20 artists whose work is well known both nationally & internationally, featured in various major collections, and who have individually received numerous prestigious awards and grant recognitions.

The exhibition opens June 5th and closes June 29th. An opening reception will be held Saturday June 14th from 7pm – 10pm. All artists and their guests are welcome.

I used to be the queen of the hand cut garnish and/or decorative knife skills. I think tournée-cut potatoes simply taste better; I do. But, my recent cooking laziness has forced me to return to a more fresh-cut approach, like carambola (star fruit). I’ve looked at them decoratively for so many years, I’d forgotten how delicious they really are. I have not forgotten how delicious the magazine hosting this next Call is however.
