BUFFALO…in brief.

When you think of Colorado and food, does it conjure images of snow bunnies and hot chocolate?  Then clearly you need to revisit Colorado.  When I think of Colorado, I think of Buffalo Burgers.  Buffalo burgers, once a fringe food, have now found their place in everyday fare.   In South Central Colorado, the buffalo burgers are unmatched.  I wonder if there’s any chance buffalo will be on the menu at this next exhibit’s opening night…

Keeping with the tradition of the Contemporary Exhibit, juror Michael Chavez will select six to eight artists to join the exhibit as invited artists who will give us an exciting survey of established and emerging artists in the contemporary  art fields of drawing, painting, photography and mixed media two-dimensional work.

MEDIA: Two-dimensional format in the disciplines of drawing, mixed media, painting, printmaking and photography.  Artists may enter up to three works which use paint, photography, drawing materials, printmaking and mixed media as the focus of submissions.

ENTRY FEE: Non-refundable entry fees are $15 for one entry, $25 for two entries, and $30 for three entries, payable to WCCA upon entry.

DEADLINE: January 28, 2011

NOTIFICATION: March 17, 2011

AWARDS: $750 Best of Show, $450 First Place, $300 Second Place, and $250 Third Place

JUROR: Michael Chavez is the Curator of Exhibitions and Education at Foothills Art Center in Golden, Colorado.  He has a BFA in sculpture from the University of Wyoming and an MFA in printmaking from the University of Kansas. Over the past 16 years he has worked at the Art Institute of Chicago, The Spencer Museum of Art and the University of Wyoming Art Museum.  In addition to curatorial duties, Chavez is active in the Colorado art community serving on public art committees and judging several exhibitions for Colorado’s cultural institutions.  (continues below)

Have you ever wondered why most women fill the family role of cook?  (although not in my house)  …But in the professional world most Chefs are men?  Me too.  I like being female, despite the issues…even in the South.  Today I’m paying tribute to one of my favorite female Chefs, Cat Cora, who proves gender doesn’t matter…at least in this case.  But we all know that gender does matter, especially in this next call for entries.

Ever since Judy Chicago and Miriam Schapiro organized the collective Womanhouse project in San Francisco in 1972, as well as Judy Chicago’s 1979 Dinner Party, shows centering on women’s reality have become a staple in galleries nationwide.

Download the Prospectus for Gender Matters/Matters of Gender!Gender Matters/Matters of Gender, expands this tradition to include works by artists of both sexes who work from a consciousness of how gender is reflected in art, how the artist’s gender influences her or his medium, and how gender often affects the circumstances in which the artist creates. This show will include a range of artists who make art which explores sexual identity, evolutions in biological reproduction and art which is sometimes informed by an awareness of gender based craft and traditions.

ELIGIBILITY: The exhibition is open to everyone. Entries must represent original works of art or design and represent or address the theme in some way.

Abstraction is defined as the process or result of generalization.  In my house, the dinner discussion goes a little like this: “What do you want for dinner?” Which is often followed by “I don’t know.  What do you want for dinner?”  Which is then further followed by: ” Well, I know I don’t want pizza.”  By the way, this abstract dinner notion of I-don’t-know-but-I-don’t-want-that, usually ends in pizza for dinner.  Poetic, eh?  Here’s a way to have a more productive abstract notion…

Abstract art uses a visual language of form, color and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world. 

Western art was, from the Renaissance up to the middle of the nineteenth century, underpinned by the logic of perspective and an attempt to reproduce an illusion of visible reality.

Visit the Woman Made Gallery!The arts of cultures other than the European had become accessible and showed alternative ways of describing visual experience to the artist. By the end of the 19th century many artists felt a need to create a new kind of art which would encompass the changes taking place in technology, science and philosophy.

The sources from which individual artists drew their arguments were diverse, and reflected the social and intellectual preoccupations in all areas of Western culture at that time.

Visit the Woman Made Gallery!Abstraction indicates a departure from reality in depiction of imagery in art. This departure from accurate representation can be only slight, or it can be partial, or it can be complete.

Abstraction exists along a continuum.

Even art that aims for verisimilitude of the highest degree can be said to be abstract, at least theoretically, since perfect representation is likely to be exceedingly elusive.

Time Turned by Juror Sandra PerlowArtwork which takes liberties, altering for instance color and form in ways that are conspicuous, can be said to be partially abstract. Total abstraction bears no trace of any reference to anything recognizable. In geometric abstraction, for instance, one is unlikely to find references to naturalistic entities.

Figurative art and total abstraction are almost mutually exclusive. But figurative and representational (or realistic) art often contains partial abstraction.  Both Geometric abstraction and Lyrical Abstraction are often totally abstract.  Among the very numerous art movements that embody partial abstraction would be for instance fauvism in which color is conspicuously and deliberately altered vis-a-vis reality, and cubism, which blatantly alters the forms of the real life entities depicted.

MEDIA: Open to two- and three-dimensional semi-abstract, non-objective to pure abstract works in all media by women artists from the international community.

SUBMISSION ONLINE:Submit jpgs of up to three of your works on their website. Please include an artist statement and a $30 entry fee.

While Walking by Juror Sandra PerlowJUROR: Sandra Perlow is a prolific artist interested in abstraction and pictorial space. She earned her BA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and an MA from the Illinois Institute of Design.

Perlow has shown her work internationally, including at Linda Warren Gallery, Harper College, Jean Albano Gallery, and the Rockford Art Museum. She is an active contributor to WMG and serves on its Advisory Board.

I frequently joke that I would eat anything that won’t run from me.  (Maybe I just need a pair of these Waffle Sneakers from BBC.)  But I must admit that how food is presented, it’s arrangement, if you will, makes a huge difference.  I love petite little bites that cause me guilt because I know that I am disturbing a masterpiece.  Speaking of masterpieces…

It will come as no surprise that this Call for Entries from Vermont Photo Space Gallery called The Arrangement conjures of the exquisite fusion of food and art…the art of presentation.  Yes, I am that obsessed with food.  But I know you will dig deeper for your own “Arrangement”…don’t forget Vermont Photo Space offers free framing & matting on accepted entries!

CALL FOR ENTRIES: The Arrangement 

The tradition of still-life as subject matter has roots deep into the history of art, pre-dating photography as a medium by centuries. 

Image by Ken Signorello - Read the full Call for Entries!Fine artists in all mediums, photography included, benefited from the total control they had over the final piece; the art making began with their arrangements of the mostly inanimate objects they intended to represent.  As Vermont Photo Space Gallery owner Ken Signorello aptly points out, “…it is art squared, where one first creates a work of art and then another to preserve it.”

The history of still life in Photography is as old as the medium itself.  Henry Talbot himself produced the first photographic images using the inanimate objects of still life.  In its earliest days, utilizing still life as subject matter allowed for the lengthy exposures necessary for its initial technologies. 

Learn more about the Vermont Photo Space Gallery!In the early 1900s, studies in line and form of object contributed to popular abstractions.  In the 1950s, still-life concentrated on the kitsch, and re-emerged in the 90s after a few decades in obscurity, in perfect partnership with the new trendy super-saturated film stock.  Overall, the genre has been largely ignored, despite periodic bouts of influence – surprising, for a photographic practice with so much potential. 

What is still life today? 

Vermont Photo Space wants you to show them your arrangements, from advertising to record photography, the abstract to the obvious.  Whether you are an amateur or professional, you may have experienced your still-life photographs as some of your favorite images – Juror Paula Tognarelli wants to see them.

Image by Juror Paula TognarelliJUROR:  Paula Tognarelli is the Executive Director and Curator of the Griffin Museum of Photography. The Griffin Museum of Photography’s mission is to promote an appreciation of photographic art and a broader understanding of its visual, emotional and social impact.

Tognarelli holds a M.S. in Arts Administration from Boston University; is a graduate of the New England School of Photography (Applied Program) and is a current candidate for her Masters in Education at Lesley University as a visual arts teacher.

Paula describes her photography as her native language. “I’ve always been more visual than vocal. I could draw a picture much faster than I could articulate a story in words. Photography made dialogue that much easier for me.” 

Tognarelli is also a digital imaging specialist. She has done extensive postgraduate study in color management, color theory, digital photography and digital imaging processing. She has lectured on digital imaging throughout the United States and in Japan, representing Agfa and Polaroid Graphic Imaging. She has also been a speaker at the Seybold Conferences. She is a former member of the Xerox Technical Advisory Board. Paula was named by Printing Impressions magazine as one of twelve women who made a major contribution to the Graphic Arts/ Imaging industry.

Ownership: All submitted photos must have been taken by the photographer making the entry.

Digital Submissions: All submissions must be made by digital files through:

1. Upload on VermontPhotoSpace.com or

2. Sent via email to submissions@VermontPhotoSpace.com. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it along with an application form. There is a $5.00 surcharge for email entries.

3. Images should be as large as possible but no larger than 1280 pixels on the longest side, type jpg – set to the highest quality. DPI can be set to any number, but if you must specify something go with 72 dpi.

DEADLINE: Images and payment must be received by midnight EST on the submission closing date December 22, 2010.

RIGHTS: Photographers retain all rights to their work, except for submissions accepted for exhibition: artists grant Vermont Photo Space the right to use their images to promote the exhibition and for display on VPS website and for inclusion in an exhibit catalog.

Vermont Photo Space Gallery provides free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of our exhibitions, subject to standard sizes. Photographers set their own prices if they wish to sell their work, and retain all rights.

I once wanted to be a Master Chef, but alas, I decided in the end that I enjoyed the eating more than the cooking.  Becoming a Master Chef takes years of schooling and working in virtually every position in the kitchen to reach your end goal.  Master painters are no different.  As I have shouted from the rooftop on many occasions, “I am a bad painter.”  However, I salute all of you that have what it takes.

The International Museum of Contemporary Masters (IMCM), founded in 2001, is a support system for traditional representational artists.  IMCM challenges artists to always strive for a higher level of artistic excellence and is totally dedicated to the recognition, encouragement and support of contemporary, currently active, artists of traditional representational art worldwide.

The word “contemporary” in the museum’s name is to be read “of our times” and refers to currently living and active artists.

Learn more about Judge and Painter Daniel E. Greene!JUDGE:  Daniel E. Greene, N.A. is considered one of the foremost realist painters of our time.  His pastels and oil paintings have earned him countless awards and honors, and his work is included in collections throughout the world.

Among many accolades, he was elected to the National Academy of Design in 1969, elected to the Pastel Society of America’s Pastel Hall of Fame in 1983, and received lifetime achievement awards from the American Society of Portrait Artists, the Portrait Society of America, and American Artist magazine.  Dan is also known as a thorough and generous instructor, as evidenced by his art instruction books and DVDs.  He continues to teach workshops at his North Salem, New York, studio.

I would eat out almost every day if I could afford it–not because I don’t like to cook.  I would eat out for the accessibility.  An entire world of cuisine is out there, and so many opportunities to get it from those who do it best are in the most unlikely of places.  The world, after all, is your oyster.  I feel the same sense of passion about the accessibility of art.  I love to find an unexpected master piece in the most unusual of places.  Here’s an opportunity…

Check out this Call for Entries for the 10th Annual National Juried Exhibition from the Rome Art Coterie.  The venue?  River City Bank.  With a reasonable entry fee, prizes that range from $100 to $1000 and a sales commission of only 35%, I say go for it!

Lean more about the Rome Art Coterie online!ELIGIBILITY:  All artists must be 18 years of age or older and reside in the continental United States.  Any traditional or non traditional two dimensional or three dimensional medium or style, including but not limited to painting, drawing, fiber art, clay, metal, stone, printmaking, and mixed media may be submitted.  Work must be current since 2007 and CANNOT have previously been shown in a Rome Art Coterie juried show.  Plexiglas must be used in place of regular glass when shipping artwork normally exhibited under glass.  DO NOT USE:  Styrofoam peanuts as packing material.

ENTRY FEE:  $30 nonrefundable fee

JUROR:  Michael Marling de Cuellar is an Associate Professor of Art at North Georgia College and Sate University.  Marling de Cuellar’s works have been exhibited nationally and internationally and are featured in both private and corporate collections here and abroad. 

As a curator he developed the Southern Printmaking Biennale which is a survey of contemporary printmaking in America.

When I moved to Gatlinburg around 3 1/2 years ago, I wouldn’t live anywhere without a mountain top view.  After several years up here, we are contemplating building a Storage Container house, and I really think I’m going to choose to live on the water this time–the river to be exact.  And, I promise it isn’t because of the abundance of River Trout, although they are yummy eats.

Check out this Call for Entries for the 2010 Susquehanna International Fine Art Competition whose theme is River Art this year.  There is no entry fee so buy a rod and reel and head to the river for a little “research.”  Take a look!

Email Entries: Send 1 email per category. You may attach up to 3 images per category. Send each category entry in a separate email.

Information to include: In the title of the email, note the artist name & category. In the body, note the attached entries, their titles & years created.

PRIZES: Grand Prize: The top entry of the competition will receive a $250 cash prize and be used as the cover image for the book “River Art” to be published in January, 2011.  Category Winners: The top entry in each category will win $50 and be featured as the lead image in each chapter of the book “River Art” to be published in January, 2011.

I am all about Functional Art.  I try to shove art into every corner of my life from my choices in clothing to furniture to food.  I wonder…if food that is presented beautifully tastes better, does that mean that a beautifully-encased iPhone will function better?  Hmmm…

PRIZES: For each category: $250 winner, $100 runner-up & a 5% royalty fee for each product sold with your artwork. Top 5 designs in each category get an invitation to show their work at the launch event in November of 2010 in Chicago, IL plus free iPhone case and laptop skins.

ENTRY FEE:  There seems to be no entry fee.

You may also submit other graphic format files, such as JPG or GIF. All artwork must be the original creation of the submitting person. Do not violate copyrights in your design.  Adult, obscene, offensive, or otherwise indecent artwork is strictly forbidden. Submission of your artwork acknowledges that your design could be used on a physical product sold by SolSketch and that you accept the standard artist royalty agreement.

SUBMISSIONS: SolSketch recommends that you use their pre-designed Adobe Illustrator templates. But, you do not have to use them. If you do not use their templates, they’ll do their best job to fit your artwork or photography to their templates for you.

Roswell, New Mexico

Well known by artists as the “Gift of Time”, the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program was established in 1967 to provide gifted studio based visual artists with the unique opportunity to concentrate on their work in a supportive, collegial environment for a whole year. This “gift of time” allows artists to work without distraction in an effort to break new ground and focus on individual goals.

CURRENT DEADLINE: December 1, 2010 

MEDIA: In-residence grants are offered to artists involved in painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography, installation and other fine art media. Grants are not made in the disciplines of performance art or production crafts. 

HOUSING & STUDIO FACILITIES: The studios are large, open spaces that measure approximately 20’x25’x10′. These areas are well-lighted and convertible to the artist’s requirements within reason. The printmaking facility is a small, fully operational studio – basically lithographic/etching in nature. 

Artists are housed in a complex of six houses and 10 studios located on forty acres of land. Each artist is provided with a house that can amply accommodate either a single person or a family. Rent, utilities (except telephone), repairs and maintenance costs are borne by the Program. Houses are furnished with major furniture items, appliances and utensils. (continued below)

STIPEND:  A stipend, or living allowance, of $800 per month is offered along with $100 per month for every dependent living with the grantee. Currently, the cost of art materials is borne by the grantee.
