Fresh fruit is still my favorite dessert. I will take a bowl of berries over chocolate 9 times out of 10. The only thing I miss is the fat content, the luscious mouth feel. But, my husband has solved that problem with scratch-made whipped cream, heavy on the vanilla, light on the sugar. There’s no going back. I talk to myself in the grocery store –okay everywhere. But, it is worst in the grocery store. In the produce section last week, I was standing in front of a mountain of shiny red apples when I muttered, “I don’t get it.” As you know, I advertise my disinterest in the grainy texture & overly sweet flavor of many red varieties of apples on a regular basis. I tend to prefer them green & tart; sue me. My grocer had approx. 2 dozen green apples & 20 dozen red varieties for sale, hence the “I don’t get it.” But this time, a woman in my age range was standing next to me while I muttered. She turned, looked me in the eye & said, “If you don’t like apples, you’re not American.” Really? Is my nationality now determined by my fruit choices? I have spent a lifetime not buying still life work, because it doesn’t usually call to me. I like my work non-representational, controversial, emotionally raw. But I keep finding work that defies my notion of what is and is not still life. Cucumber frequently replaces crackers & bread in our house due to a family-wide wheat allergy. I love the crisp texture coupled with the ridiculously low price. If you have ever grown your own, you know that they fruit prodigiously, so they cost precious little. But I have recently volunteered to pay more for my cucumbers. No, I didn’t go organic; I went English. I can’t go back. English cucumbers aren’t usually waxed because plastic wrapping helps contain the moisture, and they are less bitter due to the smaller seeds. But the true benefit for me is that they seem to spoil at such a slow rate that I never have to throw anything away. The benefit outweighs the cost. We always end up eating eggs for breakfast. I am so bored with eggs. Because I try to avoid single-use appliances, I didn’t own a waffle iron until I inherited one second-hand from my mother-in-law last week. We’ve had waffles 4 times in the last 7 days. My husband asked, “Don’t you want something different?” I explained that appearance of something 4 times in our nearly 20 years together still qualifies as something different even if the 4 times were all in one week. The award for best waffles EVER goes to this morning’s blueberry bacon maple variety. He deserves a cash award, really. This next Call comes with cash awards but no blueberry waffles. It is still worth a look though…

“I like to challenge accepted cultural dogma and ideology. Each of my works features a theatrical set defined by a stage with actors, props, and a backdrop. The actors in the set consist of everyday objects brought into combinations and interactions that attempt to elicit inquiry. The content of the artwork focuses on themes such as time, aging, nostalgia, the footless pursuit of Utopia, and the conditions of ideology which disable our rational minds. Veggies everyday seems simple. There are many different perspectives on how much is enough, but the average recommendation is 5 servings a day (approximately 1/2 c., well packed, per serving).
