I am addicted to blackberries and raspberries. I dare say that I would consume them at EVERY meal if I was financially able to afford them that often. And, many of you know that I am addicted to my BlackBerry as well. I never could be convinced to make the leap to iPhone and have remained jealous of the photo apps available. Until now… I have found a couple of great photo apps for Blackberry, and my shots are getting better by the day as a result. I wonder if a cell phone pic could take the cover of this Juried Book Competition featured in this Call for Entries? Hmmm… sounds like a challenge.

CALL for ENTRIES: Open to Interpretation

Open to Interpretation is a juried book competition of photography, poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction. Each book begins with a themed call for photos. The chosen photos become the literary inspiration for the writers’ submissions. A book is created that matches each winning photo with two stories or poems that offer different interpretations of the image. The unique collaboration adds new dimensions to both the photos and the written word.

Irvine is a part time instructor of photography at Columbia College Chicago. She received an MFA in photography from FAMU in Prague, Czech Republic, and an MA in art history from the University of Illinois.

I cannot bake biscuits of any sort. I have tried and tried, but the result is a pan of white hockey pucks. It is okay not to be good at everything… even if you really want to be. By the way, I cannot paint either. I have tried and tried, but the result is a canvas of muddy mess. Lately, I’ve published a lot of photo calls, and I am starting to feel the guilt of personal bias. So, this Call is mostly meant for all of my talented painting readers. Go forth and conquer!

Richeson School of Art & Gallery, a division of Jack Richeson & Co., Inc., is proud to announce the Richeson 75 Figure / Portrait 2011. Seventy five two-dimensional works of art and several alternates will be selected to represent the finest examples of painting and drawing being produced by today’s visual artists.

ELIGIBILITY: Competition is open to all artists over age 18. All work entered must be original in concept/execution and have been created since January 1, 2009. No work done in a class, workshop or under supervision is eligible.

MEDIA Categories: 1) Oils, Oil Pastel & Paintstiks; Pastels & Drawing; 2) Dry Media, and Water Media; and 3) Other (Printmaking, Mixed Media etc.). No photography, electronic or computer generated and/or assisted or 3-D is eligible for this competition.

DEADLINE: All entries must be postmarked or entered online by June 10, 2011.

NOTIFICATION: E-Mailed on or before June 29, 2011.

ENTRY FEE: $30 for one image plus $10 each additional image, maximum of 3 in each category with a maximum of 6 artworks total.

And, a couple of you have suggested that I drop the food references and pictures and just stick to the art deadlines, but on both occasions I have respectfully declined to remove the food from the food-themed art blog. At the end of the day, though, my posts have precious-little to do with food. Today is monumental. Today is the day that Food is both the opening paragraph AND the theme of the Call. Founded in 2008, Fraction Magazine is currently on its twenty-fith issue and has shown portfolios from more than 150 photographers. David has been reviewing portfolios at various events including Review LA, Review Santa Fe, PhotoNOLA, Atlanta Celebrates Photography, PhotoLucida, and Fotofest. He was also a juror for Review Santa Fe in 2010 as well as a juror for Critical Mass in 2009 and 2010. For his outstanding work, David was selected as the 2010 recipient of the Griffin Museum’s Rising Star Award.

AWARDS: With selection for this exhibition, featured artist’s work will be seen by an international audience of collectors, curators, art consultants, and other advocates of fine art photography. Each participant will be included in the Center’s Main Gallery exhibition and Online Gallery exhibition. Exhibiting artists are encouraged to attend the Center’s opening reception to participate in portfolio reviews with David Bram.

Like many of you, I frequently “wing it” in the kitchen. I like the idea of cooking with whatever you have on hand and making adjustments according to taste along the way. However, while editing a recipe card for The Lodge at Buckberry Creek recently, I realized there is a certain comfort in knowing the exact amount of cream and vanilla in bread pudding. There is comfort in not guessing the temperature or constantly checking the oven to see if your concoction is ready. JUROR: Axis Gallery is pleased to have Dena Beard as juror for the 6th National Juried Exhibition. Dena Beard is Curatorial Assistant at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAM/PFA).

For the MATRIX program at BAM/PFA she assists with site-specific projects by national & international emerging artists, including Ahmet Ogut, Omer Fast, Futurefarmers, Brent Green, Paul Chan, Martha Colburn, Mario Garcia Torres, Trevor Paglen, Tomas Saraceno, Allison Smith, and Tris Vonna-Michell, among others. Independently, she curated the Lending Library exhibition series in Oakland & San Francisco, featuring the research materials of Desiree Holman, Trevor Paglen, Kevin Killian, Tom Marioni, Colter Jacobsen, Amy Franceschini, Stephanie Syjuco, among others.

Dena is currently working on Take Up Room on the Floor, a project about physical and virtual embodiment, and a solo exhibition featuring the artist Lutz Bacher. Prior to joining the staff at BAM/PFA, Dena was Curatorial Associate at the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, an alternative art space that presented 16–18 exhibitions annually. She graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with an M.A. in Art History, Theory, and Criticism.

I am a magazine reader. Yep, the paper ones. I read and peruse imagery as motivation for household projects, photography and, of course, cooking. One of my favorite food magazines? Food and Wine, of course. I have delusions of grandeur each and every time I watch Top Chefs that I could win that show and have my work featured in F&W. Instead, I am opting to submit my art to this Call for Creative Quarterly. Do you think Food & Wine will be so impressed they will cover my food anyway? Me neither. Surreal Visions

SlowArt Productions presents the group thematic exhibition, Surreal Visions. This exhibition will focus on art inspired by the surreal and will be held at the Limner Gallery.

Eligible are all forms of surreal and visionary figurative art. All interpretations of the theme “Surreal Visions” will be reviewed and considered.

ELIGIBILITY AND RESTRICTIONS: The competition is open to all artists, national and international, working in all media. All forms of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, graphics, digital and installation art, video, etc. are eligible. Entrants must be 18 years of age or older to apply. Wall mounted works must not be taller than 72″ no wider than 120″. Sculptural work must fit through a standard height, 36″wide entry door.

DEADLINE: The final postmarked deadline is June 30, 2011. Entries must be postmarked or submitted via email by this date.

NOTIFICATION: Artists will be notified of acceptance or non-acceptance no later than July 20, 2011. Results will be posted on or before this date at: http://www.slowart.com/results. Notification will be made via email and/or by mail with the return of materials in the SASE provided by the artist. Artists who do not include the SASE because they do not want their submission materials returned must provide a self addressed stamped #10 (letter size) envelope if they wish to be notified by mail.

All artists who provide a working email address will be notified via email, if no email or return envelope is provided, artists will only be notified if accepted to exhibit. ENTRY FEES: There is a $35.00 entry fee for one to four artworks entered, presentation is by digital files. There is a $5.00 fee for each additional artwork above four. Details of 2D artwork count as an additional artwork. Sculptors may provide one additional view per artwork without cost. Artists accepted to exhibit will not be charged additional fees of any kind. Payments may be by check or money order payable to SlowArt Productions, or by credit card using PayPal.

SALES: All works in the show must be for sale. The gallery will take a 30 % commission on all sales. Sale price is determined by the artist.

EXHIBITION and AWARDS: Winning artists will be featured in a group exhibition at the Limner Gallery, September 3 – October 1, 2011. The exhibition will also be displayed on the Limner Gallery web site. One artist will be awarded a two page display in Direct Art Volume #19, Fall 2012 issue. JUROR: As founder and director of Vision Quest Photo Workshops, Douglas Beasley provides workshops that emphasize personal expression and creative vision over the mechanics of camera use. He believes in helping each student find their voice rather than making pretty pictures. Much of his personal work, including Sacred Sites of the Lakota, Disappearing Green Space, Silent Witness: Genocide and the Landscape, Sacred Places and Earth Meets Spirit are supported by grants and commissions and have been widely exhibited and collected. His second book Earth Meets Spirit will be coming out in late 2010. Doug continues to explore the notion of what is sacred in his photography and in his life. He lives in a passive solar home surrounded by trees in Saint Paul, MN. When not out traveling the world he can be found tending his Japanese gardens or enjoying a strong cup of coffee while listening to loud music. Personal heroes include Jimi Hendrix, the Dalai Lama and whoever invented the espresso machine.
