Surprised!

Salt and pepper are the basics of all seasoning. Given nothing else, you can still do wonders with this pair. However, while menu-planning for an upcoming cabin vacation with my family, I have had to take sodium content into mind for my mother’s sake. WOW! What an eye opener. One-half a frozen average-size pepperoni pizza (3 slices of 6) has her recommended sodium intake for 2.5 days. I suppose that too much of a good thing really does exist. This next call involves the basics of art…sketching. Take a look!

Today, I miss peanut butter. When I was pregnant, peanut butter was a wonder food. It had just enough protein, sugar and fat to transform my mood, one tablespoon at a time. In celebration of my in-laws 50th Anniversary, I am headed on vacation to a much warmer clime…just in time for Christmas. You know what is not great about a warm vacation at Christmas? Being in a bathing suit at Christmas… when I should be eating peanut butter cookies and peanut butter pie and everything else that won’t run from me. I love that their creations are often part art, part architechture. If you don’t think how something looks affects how it tastes, you are clearly eating ugly food. The Built Environment

Images that capture a vision of the man made world around us.

We’ve been documenting the built environment since the beginnings of photography. It’s natural – our lives are entwined with and dependent upon structures of all kinds. Let us examine the genius designs, abundant materials both found and fabricated, engineering feats, beauty and function, of our constructed environments. Technical mastery has much to do with a great architectural photograph, but also an understanding of the architect’s vision, and/or the humanity that invigorates and utilizes its spaces.

Whether a skyscraper or a shed, chasm span or walking bridge, from convenience store to industrial complex, public or personal (heck, an outhouse is a pertinent structure), and even the remains of such, Darkroom Gallery is looking forward to featuring your built environments.

JUROR: With an engineering degree from Trinity College (Dublin) and an Architect/Author father (Raymond McGrath), Norman McGrath was primed for educated view of his subject. He has been photographing architecture and interiors for decades, capturing the work of major architects and designers and their well-known works. His images have been featured in the foremost architectural publications, as well as his popular book, “Photographing Buildings Inside Out”. The American Institute of Architects selected McGrath for its Institute Honor award. McGrath continues to author and co-author books illustrated with architectural photography (“Manhattan Skyscrapers”, “Skyscraper Rivals”, and New York’s Pennsylvania Station”) as well as educate and inspire students of photography at the Maine Photographic Workshops, the Palm Beach Photo Workshops, and the Calumet Institute of the University of Maryland.

SUBMISSIONS:

Age: Entrants must be 18+ years old. If younger, a guardian may submit for you.

Ownership: All photos must have been taken by the entrant. If you are a guardian submitting for a minor, please make it clear on the submission.

Digital Submissions: All submissions must be made by digital files through:

1. Upload on the Dark Room Gallery website or

2. Sent via email to submissions (at) VermontPhotoSpace.com. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it along with an application form. There is a $5.00 surcharge for email entries.

3. Images should be as large as possible but no larger than 1280 pixels on the longest side, type jpg – set to the highest quality. DPI can be set to any number, but if you must specify something to go with 72 dpi.

FEES: Up to 3 images may be submitted for a fee of $20 US for on-line submission and $25 for email submission. Add’l images $5 US per image.

Darkroom Gallery provides free matting & framing of work for the duration of the exhibition, subject to standard sizes. Photographers set their own prices if they wish to sell their work, and retain all rights.

JUROR: Internationally exhibited artist Flynn Geissel holds a deep passion for art and has been painting since 1997. The artist’s work has been exhibited in two American museums and in galleries throughout the nation. Serving two masters, the artist studied studio art and depth psychology, completing a doctoral degree in counseling psychology. During the study and practice of psychology, Geissel gravitated toward the domains of well-being, creativity, and the use of creative process as a healing tool. Discovering a wealth of artistic material in the study of dreams, the unconscious, and the healing stories of many cultures, the artist moved further into art as a life calling.

Equally proficient in the landscape as well as in abstract expressionism, Geissel’s work is a regular part of juried exhibits. Geissel’s work has also been exhibited at two Americal Museums including the July 2010 “Sensory Overload” exhibit at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC and the Museum of the Living Artist in San Diego. The artist has also been exhibited internationally at The Brick Lane Gallery in London, UK.

AWARDS: The first place winner, Juror’s Choice, will be awarded $350 and artwork by this artist will be placed on the home page of the website. A second and third place winner will also be chosen. At least 2 winners will be chosen in each of the entry categories. Each of the 10 winners will have a gallery on the website; winners will submit 10 images in JPEG format for their gallery, bio, and artist statement.

SALES: Winning artists may provide prices for works exhibited. The website will include a contact page for buyers who would like to purchase work. Artists will handle their own sales with no commission by SpeakingArtAward.com.

Christo and Jeanne Claude. McCartney and Lennon. Cookies and milk. In collaboration, sometimes a sum is greater than its individual parts. Compelling works of art have often been produced by the meeting of two creative minds, or as a result of one artist’s exposure to the work of another.

Historically, schools of art were a breeding ground for new ideas, where artists could learn from their masters and grow from one another, bringing the large world in a little closer. To share images and ideas over distances was difficult, but expected as part of one’s training. It was simply a stepping stone to individual fame.

In the age of Flickr, Facebook, and hostyourdomain.com, artists may now share their work with the world at the touch of a button. We can choose to bridge an ocean in an instant, or to isolate our work entirely. It is entirely yours to decide. So the choice to collaborate may now be deliberate; choosing to ‘share’ can be more profound than an RSS feed, more mindful than physical proximity, and more creative than working alone.

DON’T kiss MY CHILI

I only eat chili in winter. It isn’t the spice; I eat spicy food all summer. It isn’t the temperature; I eat hot meals everyday. But, for whatever reason, chili = winter. Just around the corner is the chili apex of my winter…the local Chili Cookoff. It isn’t a culinary wonderland, believe me. There are no surprises: the police department wins every year, and some yahoo will put Hershey’s Kisses™ in their chili. But, after a night off glorious gorging on gallons of chili, we will watch as they throw the switch on the holiday lights as we all gaze upward at the winter fireworks show. I’ll go to sleep with a smile on my face having forgotten that I will soon start belching cumin. This next call wantes to know what Winter means to you. I’d leave out the belching part, if I were you…

What does Winter mean to you? Visual artists throughout the ages have tried to capture winter’s quintessential wonder. Winter is a time of dreaming and planning. In many parts of the world, the winter season is a time of extremes – ranging from exquisite beauty to notable hardships. The A. Smith Gallery seeks both literal representations and metaphorical interpretations on this theme. Submit your most intriguing photographs on the theme of “Winter.”

ELIGIBILITY: Entries must not have been exhibited previously in an exhibition at A Smith Gallery.

JUROR: Jean Caslin is an independent curator and career coach for emerging and mid-career visual artists. Jean Caslin’s photographs have been shown in four community exhibitions during FotoFest. Her work also has been exhibited by Texas Photographic Society, Rice University, Glassell School of Art, Studio E, Koelsch Gallery, The Arts Alliance Center at Clear Lake, Museum of Printing History and Watson Gallery.

I want to love apples, but truth be known, I don’t. Due to my proximity to multiple apple orchards, my not loving apples seems a little tragic. So, I keep going to the orchards, and I keep buying different varieties in the hopes that one result in an OMG moment. The Arkansas Black variety was nice, but I’m still looking. I had the try-and-try again attitude with painting for a long time, and every once in a while, I still get the painting bug. But, to date, I am not a good painter. A few have said that painting is dead, but alas it is flourishing as never before. There is great work being done, on the level of Gerard Richter, Susan Swartz, Tomma Abts and David Hockney, to name just a few. And all have exhibited in NYC – now perhaps you can as well.

The Jeffrey Leder Gallery will start the new year with an expansive exhibit: “International Painting NYC.” The exhibit will occupy 3 floors of the gallery. My non-art related work place is The Lodge at Buckberry Creek, a resort in the Great Smoky Mountains patterned after the Great Camps of the Adirondacks in upstate New York. The Lodge is a 4-Diamond resort and home to the only fine dining in Gatlinburg. So for me, the idea of the Adirondacks conjures images of hand-oiled leather couches, animal hide rugs, wood-burning fires and warm mulled cider. Thanks to this annual call, it also reminds me of phenomenal art opportunities as well! The holidays are in the air…
