CALL for ENTRIES: Jealous

Learn more from Fresh Paint Magazine!jumping through the
HOOPS

I have plastic envy.  Hoop houses are sprouting up all over town as pre-planning for chances of upcoming frost.  Last year our first snow came in October.  Locally lots of folks protect their late Summer plantings from possible early frost while also giving them space to start seedlings in colder weather.  Once the ground is frozen, installation becomes a much more complicated project.  My house hangs on the side of a mountain.  The only flat space I have for a hoop house is my gravel driveway, ha.  Jealous of plastic –never thought I’d have that problem.  This next Call will hopefully make you the object of the jealous.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from Fresh Paint Magazine & the Jealous Curator for December Int’l edition. This mag is delicious, & rumor has it that, once again, one of our readers is being featured!  We are so proud to have them as sponsors.  Open to more than PAINTING

My friend accidentally discovered a peach tree in her yard.  I was puzzled too. See has a heavily wooded side yard through which she rarely traverses, and after a short walk yesterday, she came across a previously undiscovered peach tree full of ripe fruit.  Now, she has a summer-long supply of fresh peaches. I am so jealous.  But this next Call offers all the fresh you’ll need for a while.  Take a look…

BOUQUET

Are you eating flowers?  I do occasionally, but only when I can buy them directly from the grower or grow them myself due to pesticides.  One of my favorite edible blooms, second only to zucchini blossoms, may be sweet violets.  I like to make a simple syrup infused with violets then make a subtle glaze for sugar cookies or a vinegar for a salad of bitter greens.  The next time you’re at the Farmer’s Market, consider the flowers edible too. This next Call want YOUR view on all things violet–not just the flowers.  Take a look…

Niche market foods abound.  Don’t you ever wonder who decided, “I want to grow lavender mint microgreens when I grow up”?  But someone grows lavender mint microgreens.  I used to wonder if there was a place for me in the market to make goat cheese for a living, but I have dismissed feeling like the market was too small to support my goat cheese obsession.  But now the idea of raising goats and making cheese sounds like I want to be an agricultural giant by comparison to lavender mint microgreens, eh?  This next Call is all about the niche market.  Take a look…

MEAT

I am not currently a vegetarian, but I think I could be without that much difficulty.  It is a personal choice that I have examined over the years.  As Jon & I head toward a more agrarian lifestyle, I recognize that I am unwilling to take the life of an animal living on my farm (chickens, rabbits & goats).  Instead, I leave that job to my husband who has less of a debate with it than I do.  Does that mean I should not be willing to eat them–since I couldn’t kill them?  This is my current philosophical internal dialogue.  These animals offer my family the best way to get protein, but the chickens & goats can produce protein in the form of eggs & milk without it resulting in their demise.  Should we choose NOT to kill them?  I know both sides of the argument.  Do I choose not to eat it if I cannot kill it?  The war of human versus nature rages in my mind as it does in this next Call from F-Stop.  Take a look & offer your best…
