snack

I’m a night eater.  15 years or so ago, I began having a late-night snack before bedtime–a habit acquired while pregnant.  I’ve never been able to shake the late night cookies and chips and cereal.  My husband’s theory is that I have to fuel my nocturnal duties that revolve around problem-solving in my sleep.  I’ve quit trying to fight it. Now I’m just trying to improve my choices.  Cookies and cereal have been slowly replaced by cheese and nuts or citrus fruit.  I’m embracing the dark side, and this next exhibit does too.  Take a look…

More than two-thirds of Americans live where they can no longer see the Milky Way galaxy because of light pollution. We have grown so isolated from night that in much of our culture it has become alien and fearful. NightVisions V seeks to re-open our positive connections to the natural night and to bridge the divide separating artistic from scientific perception, promoting the idea that science and art are two intertwined aspects of human experience.

JURORS:  Chicago binder, book & installation artist Karen Hanmer creates intimate, playful works that fragment & layer text and image to intertwine memory, cultural history, and the history of science.  Her work weds the ancient act of book binding with the high tech use of the computer to aid her process.  The intimate scale and the gestures of exploration required to travel through each piece evoke the experience of looking through an album, a diary, or the belongings of a loved one.  However, her works often take the forms of games or puzzles, and many include witty text.

Hanmer exhibits widely, and her work is included in collections ranging from Tate Britain and the Library of Congress to UCLA and Graceland.

AWARDS: Best of show $1000, 2nd Place $500 & 3rd Place $250.

I cannot escape corn. It is in everything from maltodextrin to corn syrup; you can’t escape.  And since 80-90% of that corn is genetically modified, I’m not thrilled.  While remodeling a room recently, we were cutting luan (a type of plywood) for a wall application, and what did I smell?  Burnt corn.  I would bet large sums of money that the glue that holds those layers of veneer together is made with corn.  Okay, I’ll stop bitching about corn now.  Need to bitch about something?  This next show is your perfect opportunity.  Take a look…

Your mayonnaise is a great judge of character.  No, really, I haven’t lost my mind.  If you’re not vegan, and you hate mayonnaise, it is probably because you’ve never had anything but the homogenized, bland, store-bought variety.  Real mayonnaise, if fresh, is made of three simple ingredients: egg yolks, oil & acid.  I prefer farm-fresh eggs, olive oil and lemon.  The are hundreds of combinations each with their own quirks and complexities.  Mayo-making is an foodie’s artisan craft, and this next Call is a celebration of fine craft from basketry to furniture and everything in between.  Take a look…

My mother believes I am obsessed with food & cooking.  She finds it laughable that I have a bowl specific to whipping cream.  “Obsessed” is a strong word, possibly accurate, but definitely strong.  I do not own a single bowl to which I am well enough attached that I want to be buried with it like Mimbres bowls which have been found covering the face of the interred. Wear marks on the insides of those bowls show they were actually used for more than burial items.  That just makes me more respectful of my pottery bowls–lest it ends up covering my face for all of eternity.  Hmm. This next Call wants to see how YOU might be inspired by Mimbres potters.  This is a fascinating Call, and NOT restricted to clay media.  Take a look…

My true goal with food is the same with art: to see you be brave.  But being brave has to be based on knowledge, not whim.  This is true of both food AND art.  I would never have you enter a show without doing at least some preliminary research into the venue, gallery, organization or publication.  So I want to encourage you never to let a food enter your mouth without a little preliminary research into ingredients or origin.  Do me a favor, if I can’t get you to quit eating food with labels, at least read the label.  There are scary things hidden in lots of foods. I wax nostalgic around holidays, and Mother’s Day made me think of pimento loaf.  When I was around 7, my father & I lived in Little Rock, Arkansas.  My Mom wasn’t around (that’s a long story for another time), and my Dad made all my lunches.  In his mind, pimento loaf was an appropriate lunch meat for a 7 year old.  At night, I would sneak to the bedroom door and whisper “peanut butter & jelly” while he prepared to make my lunch–subliminal influence.  I quit getting pimento loaf, and at least 3 days a week, I got Goober Grape®.  My Dad never mentioned it.  This next Call also conjures images of childhood for me.  Maybe my childhood wasn’t the standard.  Hmmm…

CHICKY

When I was pregnant, I couldn’t eat anything that looked like a bird.  The smell of fresh-roasted chicken made me ill.  And, while I could eat a chicken nugget or bad, food-service breaded chicken patty, the mere sight of a drumstick would make me violently ill.  At the time, I worked behind the cheese counter at The Gourmet Shop–which was, and still is, famous for the hundreds of pounds of chicken salad they make & sell everyday.  That job didn’t last long.  This next Call IS NOT for roasted birds; I suspect they would prefer imagery of birds that are still very much alive.  Just sayin’…
