Comfort is defined by macaroni and cheese.  Rather, the severity of the need for comfort is defined by macaroni and cheese.  A beautiful melange of swiss with a touch of pungent blue served over campanelle means I’ve had a triumphant day and comfort is a bonus.  Velveeta over elbows or Stouffer’s frozen means the day has sucked, and I need flannel pjs and a frozen drink with an umbrella.  This next Call wants to hear about your creature comforts, or at least your view of them.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Workhouse Arts Center (Lorton, VA outside D.C.) for Creature Comforts.  This is a great theme, reasonable fee, respected jurors and a historic venue.  Please do not miss this opportunity!

CALL for ENTRIES: Oil Painting

My father found steak sauce personally offensive.  He thought that the use of steak sauce was a not so subtle indication that his grilling skills were not up to par.  “The steak is perfect as it is,” he would say at every grilling opportunity.  I suppose it is a lesson learned.  Sometimes a steak is a steak, and a steak should be good enough.  Representational art, FOR ME, can sometimes be likened to a sauceless steak, wonderful as it is…just not my preference.  I know some of you do fantastic representational work, and I have a twinge of guilt that I don’t post more shows for you.  Hopefully this one will make up a little ground…

Check out this Call for Entries for the 21st Annual National Exhibition of Representational Oil Painings from Oil Painters of America to be exhibited at the Evergreen Fine Art Gallery in Evergreen, Colorado. The cost is high because you have to be a member, but the prizes are huge.  Make me proud…

blue?

I do not understand the fascination with glowing beverages I’m not interested in drinking soda that looks like antifreeze or cocktails that look like glow sticks.  Glowing food makes me think of barium x-rays.  Do you know the most popular way to get the barium inside?  MmmHmm… Think about that the next time the vibrant glow of a cocktail lures you to imbibe.  This next call encourages a more positive view of the vibrant, but then again, they aren’t asking you to eat it either.  Take a look…

Through a Lens– Vibrant

Vibrant and vibrate have the same latin root word: “vibrare” meaning to move rapidly and rhythmically to and fro. While vibrate means virtually the same thing in English, vibrant has additional connotations as it applies to brightness of light or color, or as in how alive or energetic is the given subject – literally vibrating with life. “

Through a Lens: Vibrant! gives the photographer several options. Vibrant could apply to a light or hue in the composition, or it could apply to the subject, as to a person or in a street. It could even be stretched to apply to the process – check out the vibrance adjustment layer in photoshop. Which definition of “Vibrant!” will you choose?

Audubon, The California Academy of Sciences, The Nature Conservancy, Sierra Club, Sunset, Westcliffe, and The Wilderness Society have published his work.

Photographer Michael Collopy is one of the preeminent portrait photographers of our time and has gained worldwide recognition for his commissioned portraits of hundreds of public figures. His portfolio includes portraits of world leaders such as Pope John Paul II, Mikhail Gorbachev and Margaret Thatcher and entertainers like Ella Fitzgerald, Mick Jagger, B. B. I eat my fair share of frozen lunches, but I prefer leftovers.  It isn’t the food that I object to because there are lots of options for fairly wholesome, preservative-free foods in the frozen food aisle these days.  I don’t like the plastic.  I recently abandoned all of my plastic food containers for glass.  I like the weight.  I like that I can get the orange sludge from my chili off in the dishwasher.  I like glass.  This next call is for glass lovers.  Don’t dismiss it, investigate…

Why does beer come in six packs?  My house is dotted with six packs.  It isn’t like THAT.  I am NOT a beer drinker, but my husband IS a beer brewer.  My son’s room would be far less cluttered if beer were more efficiently packaged.  Did I forget to mention that my husband stores his beer under my 12-year-old’s bed? Muncha, Yawn…

How does the older generation eat at 4:30 in the afternoon?  I am hoping it is just a Golden-Girls-esque stereotype.  I prefer to eat late night, but then again, I prefer to do everything at night. Everything tastes better after 8pm, but that may account for the reality of my lifelong struggle with the size of my rear end. My husband likes to jokingly refer to me as his “vampire-honey,” but that is clearly untrue…vampires don’t eat food.  But I would look cute as Countess Chocula.  Well, we all know I am a little hyper-focused on eating.  Anyhoo, I digress.  This next call wants to see your vision of the night. Investigate…

Night Light

Night photography reveals a world that we do not consciously see and offers photographers unique creative opportunities.

Night and day, dark and light – one implies the absence of the other.  But like yin yang, each has a bit of the other. The surprising thing to first time night photographers is how their images reveal things that the mind’s eye does not see.  Different light sources reveal their true colors. Compared to daylight, directed and weaker light creates drama, contrast, mystery and mood.

The dynamic range of light at night tends to be more in line with our tools abilities. Of course there are technical challenges with shooting in low light, but also tremendous creative opportunities. That’s what Darkroom Gallery wants to show with this exhibit.

Do you work with existing light – or do you introduce your own? Maybe you paint with light emitting light brushes. How have you approached shooting at night to express your vision? They want to see.
