Okay, I can't pass up the soap references...check this one out from Carol's Daughter!I love to support people and spaces whose mission it is to support the best in the arts.  I have a devoted reverence for human potential, and I am happy to have found a kindred spirit in The Soap Factory.  It is time for their Open Call for Submissions.

Visit The Soap Factory in Minneapolis! This is not a fee-based, juried show.  The Soap Factory supports artists and their work not only by providing exhibition and studio space on an unprecedented scale, but also by providing skilled staff to aid artists in realizing new work, by paid stipends to both artists & curators, and by securing press articles & critiques in a unique gallery space with a national profile. The Soap Factory helps position artists to continue beyond their Soap Factory exhibitions.

I usually post Calls in a brief format with links; however, I don’t want to take the chance that you won’t click the link.  So, here is the complete call:

Visit The Soap Factory online!Call for Submissions to The Soap Factory:

The Soap Factory exhibition season runs from January – October, with three main blocks of exhibition programming. Exhibitions are often comprised of a large group show in the main galleries, three individual artist project rooms and two video rooms. For the 2010/2011 season, they are particularly interested in proposals for the winter months, which take into account the fact that The Soap Factory is unheated. Projects that propose to use the entire 12,000 sq feet of gallery space are always encouraged.

Their programming is unique in that they select the majority of the artists for exhibit from their pool of submissions. They commonly receive over 350 artist submissions per season.

Submission Guidelines for 2010 season:

I find that knowing someone else has achieved results helps me distinguish between the opportunities I should seize and the ones that simply are not worth my time.  I recommend giving emerge midwest art zine a try.  I was honored to be juried into the April 2009 issue.

emerge is a specialty art zine, created by Sarah Earle, that is open to artists nationwide and is distributed quarterly to over 100 Midwest galleries (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin). Each issue features nine artists whose work is hand selected by a rotation of guest jurors.

Pictured left is Pieces of Me: Atlas, one of featured works in the April 2009 edition.

Take a chance–$15 and a chance you’ll be rejected is about as gentle as the art world gets.

ARTIST TIP: Marketing & The Artist

Click Here to Subscribe to this blog by email!

Don't just make lemonade, make mojitos!I receive forwards of shows and calls and artist tips on a regular basis.  Some are wonderful; some are too basic to pass along.  I try to filter them to offer the best and brightest to you because I know how busy you are.

A few days ago, I received a list of press contacts of reporters searching for subjects to interview from my friend and Austin-based writer Dean Lofton.  Among them was The Abundant Artist.  I knew instantly upon reading the tagline “dispelling the starving artist myth” that we were like-minded.

Click Here to visit The Abundant Artist!

At the heart of The Abundant Artist is an opportunity to pay for an art marketing consultant.  And, while you may or may not be ready for that step, I recommend that you subscribe to the weekly email newsletter.Visit Ann Rae's Blog!

I subscribed, and in my introductory email was offered an interview with Ann Rae, a California painter know for both her vineyard paintings and phenomenal success through unique marketing strategy.

You’ll need the password to hear the interview, so sign up for the email list today.  It is worth it.  I promise.  If you are one of those artists that bristle at the idea of marketing your artwork or thinking of your artwork as a business opportunity–don’t visit this site…You won’t like what you hear.  You should stay home and muse to yourself about being under-appreciated.

Lesson learned?  Find your voice.  I’ve found my voice.  How ’bout you?
