Beers Lambert Contemporary Art invites all artists working in 2D and 3D to submit to an international exhibition, I Am Solitary I Am An Army, in collaboration with Surface Gallery in Nottingham, UK, scheduled for September to October of 2010, that will explore current paths and ideas in contemporary art.

The exhibition wishes to showcase the very best in
emergent art from around the world.

Entry is open to all artists whose work speaks to concepts of identity, progress, temporality, and self, and interpretations of these themes, and/or operates upon this conceptual basis through an exciting approach to medium/material, presentation, and figurative or abstract art.

Beers Lambert encourages submissions from artists whose work explores a unique aesthetic sensibility and a progressive approach to the themes described.

The work sought after should engage with the themes, present new avenues for dialogue, and offer an exciting approach to issues that challenge and determine the direction of contemporary emergent art.

Successful artists will be exhibited and considered for inclusion with Beers Lambert Contemporary Art.

You know how much I love shows that don’t require artists to submit resumes.

I think artwork should be judged on its merits, not its pedigree…but I don’t often trip across artshows where they are brazenly looking for work that has been little seen or documented…the Apeture Portfolio Prize.

Finally…we don’t have to have the “chicken or the egg” conversation. Yippee.
Here’s the call for the Apeture Portfolio Prize.

The purpose of the Aperture Portfolio Prize is to identify trends in contemporary photography and specific artists whom they can help by bringing a wider audience.

In choosing the first-prize winner and runners-up, they are looking for work that is fresh and that hasn’t been widely seen in major publications or exhibition venues.

First prize is $5,000.

The first-prize winner and runners-up are featured in Aperture’s website for approximately one year.

Winners are also announced in the foundation’s e-newsletter, which reaches thousands of subscribers in the photography community.

Deadline: July 14, 2010, at 12:00 noon EST.

Results Announced: November 1, 2010.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: Photo Abstraction

The difference between taking photographs and being a photographer is about the same as playing golf versus being a golfer. I’m no photographer, but it is part and parcel of my media, Xerography. So…let’s call this Photography Week on Art & Art Deadlines.

Without photography, nothing would ever be cookin’ in my kitchen. To that end, here’s a great call for the photographer (or wannabe) in us all…Here’s a Call for Submissions: Photo Abstraction from The Vermont Photography Workplace.

“We often think if the camera as a tool for recording minute details of the visual world, in images that sometimes seem so real they could be mistaken for actual experience.

“But photographs can also build on abstract elements inherent in the medium, such as blur, and in the visual world, such as pattern and texture. For “Abstraction in Photography” we seek images that utilize abstract components as their primary mode of expression.

“Fields of color and exquisite shapes found in nature, linear designs discovered in the built environment, blur created in-camera or with vintage processes—the sky’s the limit. Astonish us with your eye and mind for the abstract.

“Juror Stephen Strom will select forty photographs for exhibition on the walls of PhotoPlace Gallery in August and on the gallery website. An additional thirty-five images will be chosen for PhotoPlace’s “On-Line Gallery Annex.”

CALL FOR ENTRIES: Without A Map

The theme of the week seems to be “Eat Out” or at least “Show Out(side)” of your neighborhood. Here is a great show in the North Suburbs of Chicago that is juried from an International pool of artists.

There is a $35 entry fee; however, the Northbrook Public Library (sponsor of the show) does not take a commission on sales. Woo hoo!

I frequently expound the virtues of showing in more academic and/or public venues like universities and libraries. These are opportunities for you to show in a respected space and often find a different audience. Give it a try. Here’s the call:

The Northbrook Public Library is seeking entries for its 8th annual international juried art show, “Without a Map,” to be held October 1 through November 15, 2010. A gala opening reception will be held October 1.

Artists 18 years and older, working in all 2-D and 3-D art media, are invited to submit digital entries. The exhibition is limited to original artwork created within two years of the entry date.

Artists should consider the theme, “Without a Map,” as embodying free-spiritedness, exploration, independence and an inherent desire to attain a goal.

The exhibit is open to the general public and artwork must be viewable for all ages.

Prizes include a $2,000 purchase prize as well as numerous other prizes.

Entry fee is $35 for up to three submissions.

Deadline for submission is May 31, 2010.

ART DEADLINES: January 2010

It has taken me quite a while to sift through the January 2010 deadlines. Apparently the word got out that artists were bored in the winter because there are shows everywhere.

So, why so few here at Art & Art Deadlines.com? Most of the shows struck me as simply ways for someone to take cash out of your pocket and food out of your mouth…junk food…empty calories. Hmph.

Here are a handful of shows that I felt pretty good about. In fact, I think I may have to submit to the “Kiss Me” – Art Inspired by Gustav Klimt from Pop Revolution Gallery in Mason, Ohio. Which one are you entering?

Remember, like with food–all things in moderation and quality before quantity. Snack wisely.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Kishwaukee College

Winter tends to be a very quiet time for art gallery, and a lot of artists use it as an excuse to do nothing. I’m not letting you off the hook that easy.

Think of winter as the time you spend stocking your pantry. There are lots of galleries and schools searching for artists for future exhibits.

Don’t overlook college and university art shows…These shows look great on your resume and reflect a stamp of academic value to your work that many commercial galleries truly respect.

in addition to looking great on your resume, many colleges and university shows pay honorariums, reimburse shipping costs and often have no entry fee for the submission of proposals.

Here’s a great little show to get you started…

WHERE: Kishwaukee College is located in Malta, Illinois, and they are searching for work for the 2011-2012 season. They accept admissions year ’round, so you’ve got not excuses. Just imagine, if you stock your pantry with goodies like this show, next January you will already have a show to work on during the slow winter months.

Kishwaukee College Art Gallery accepts exhibition proposals on an ongoing basis. The Gallery Committee reviews proposal submissions twice a year to determine the exhibition schedule, typically Late October and early March.

Exhibitions are displayed monthly throughout the academic year. They are currently reviewing proposals for the 2011-2012 schedule. This opportunity is open to all media, including audiovisual.

ABOUT THE GALLERY:

The Art Gallery consists of approximately 924 sq. ft. of floor space; a 26’w x 6’7”h display wall, a 12’w x 13’h display wall, (5) two sided 2’d x 6’w x 8’h portable walls, locking display cases and a number of freestanding display bases. The gallery will be open approximately 20 hours per week and student workers will be present during open hours.

PROPOSAL GUIDELINES:

Proposal materials should include: a PowerPoint presentation with a letter of proposal, 15–20 images of the work to be displayed, a resume/vitae and SASE for return of materials.

ADVERTISING:

Advertising will be provided by the gallery. A press release will be sent to local papers announcing the dates and times for each exhibit and reception, and a brief description of the artists background, medium, and style.

The gallery provides 200 postcard announcements for the artist, in addition to those sent to the gallery mailing list.

SHIPPING:

Artists residing within a reasonable distance (approximately 60 miles) of the college will be responsible for delivering and retrieving their own work. Work must be picked up within five days after the closing of the exhibition.

Kishwaukee College will provide return shipping only to artists residing more than 60 miles from the College. Proper reusable shipping materials are the responsibility of the artist.

CALL FOR EXHIBITION PROPOSALS

Well, the holidays are over, and I’m back in the saddle…or at the dining table at least… get a fork. I know… it seems like we just got up from the table.

I received this phenomenal call last week, and I thought I should pass it along. It is an ongoing open call (until Feb. 28th) with no charge, no restrictions on where an artist lives or works, and they even take audio and web-based work. Delicious, eh?

ABOUT THE CENTER

The Gateway Arts Center is a dynamic space dedicated to presenting and promoting the visual arts, located Brentwood, Maryland. In addition to the M-NCPPC, the center is home to a dozen artists’ studios, a gallery operated by the Gateway CDC, and the Prince George’s African American Museum & Cultural Center. The Maryland-National Capital Park & Planning Commission occupies approximately one quarter of the building, in which we feature a gallery, a contemporary craft showcase, and an arts class/meeting room. It is a place for people of all ages to meet, engage and learn about art, purchase one of a kind craft objects, and explore new talents.

GALLERY DESCRIPTION

The art gallery is approximately 1,300 square feet. It features high, open ceilings, track lighting, and pristine white walls.

ELIGIBILITY

This call is open to all artists and curators who are 18 years of age or older.

APPLICATION

Each application should include:

An artist/curatorial statement that is no longer than one page.
A résumé or Curriculum Vitae
A CD/DVD containing 15-20 images of work samples; OR 2-5 segments of audio and/or video, each no longer than five minutes in duration; OR an appropriate combination of images, video, audio and web-based work.
A list of works/images that includes titles, media, size, and dates created.
An SASE for the return of materials. Materials will not be returned unless an SASE with adequate postage is provided.

GUIDELINES FOR DIGITAL FILES

Effort will be made to review all submissions, regardless of format. Be aware that incompatible files may cause submissions to be rejected.

Applicants are encouraged to format files as described below:

No image or text files should be larger than 1MB.
Image files should be formatted only as jpeg, tiff, gif, or png.
Video and audio submissions may be submitted as a DVD, or on a CD and formatted as Quicktime, Windows Media, .wav, or .mpeg files, as appropriate.
Name each file: “last name” underscore “document”. Example: jones_worksamplelist.pdf.
Name image files similarly, but begin with a two-digit number that corresponds with the Work Sample List. Example: 01_jones_untitled.jpg
Web-based work may be submitted as a URL listed in the work sample list. Web-based art is work of a nature such that it’s only appropriate manifestation is online. A portfolio website that features audio/video art and/or still images is NOT web-based art.

APPLICATION EVALUATION

Proposals will be reviewed by the M-NCPPC Gateway Arts Center Gallery Committee during March 2010. Selected artists will be notified shortly thereafter.

SHIPPING & INSTALLATION

When possible, the M-NCPPC will provide for handling and transportation for artwork within the Washington, DC region using M-NCPPC staff and vehicles. Exhibitions will be installed and removed by M-NCPPC staff unless the nature of the work requires special assistance. Artworks should be properly presented and ready to install when they are delivered.

SALES & INSURANCE

The M-NCPPC will retain a 25% commission on all art works sold during, or as a result of the exhibition. M-NCPPC will be responsible for the safekeeping of all consigned artworks while they are in the custody of the Brentwood Art Center.

Welcome to ArtAndArtDeadlines.com ! Here are the deadlines for December 1 – 30 of 2009. December deadlines are typically slow for galleries, but online exhibits and contests abound.

Several of these shows have deadlines coming up the very first week of December, and because many are online or digital entries you save money (for comfort food) this winter. There are inexpensive shows that could be a great resume builders…so no excuses!

SHOW: Call to Artists: UF 313 Veterinary Education and Clinical Research Center — University of Florida

EXHIBIT TYPE: Permanent State Collection

DEADLINE: December 1, 2009.

MEDIA: 2 Dimensional hanging work

DESCRIPTION: The University of Florida in Gainesville, FL is pleased to announce a call to artists for Florida’s Art in State Buildings Program. Art budget: $95,000. An honorarium of $1,500 will be awarded to up to three finalists to make a site visit and create a site specific proposal. Artists must have met at least two (2) of the following criteria: the artist has completed public commissions similar in budget to the proposed project; the artist’s works are included in major public, private, corporate or museum collections; the artist has received awards, grants or fellowships; the artist has had a one-person exhibition in a museum within the past five years. SHOW: International Call to Artists – Winter Expo 2010 — Infinity Art Gallery

MEDIA: An unlimited variety of medium and discipline are accepted as well as a wide variety of subjects and styles are eligible including – but not limited to – traditional, contemporary, and conceptual art. Submitted artwork must be abstract, figurative, landscape or still life.

SHOW: “Projekt30‘s January 2010 Exhibition”

EXHIBIT TYPE: Online Exhibit

DEADLINE: December 1, 2009.

MEDIA: All media except support video or sound based media.

DESCRIPTION: This online exhibition will be publicly juried at Projekt30.com, December 15-29, 2009. The exhibition will include thirty artists; invitations will be sent to over 30,000 galleries, collectors, and fellow artists. Visitors have the option of contacting any participating artist with feedback or opportunities. As of October 2009 over 284,000 messages have been sent to participating artists. All artwork submitted will be presented online prior to the exhibition so visitors may help select which artists will be included. SHOW: The 2009 Winter Group Show

SHOW: Creative Adaptation Kreft Juried Exhibition – Call for Entries

EXHIBIT TYPE: Gallery Exhibit — Concordia University Ann Arbor

DEADLINE: December 4, 2009.

MEDIA: Prints, drawings, paintings, photographs, digital images, sculpture, etc. are eligible.

DESCRIPTION: Concordia University Ann Arbor seeks submission of visual arts that incorporate the various meanings and potential approaches to the idea of creative adaptation or modification of earlier forms, methods, or works. The artwork submitted should be rooted in a “useable past” while addressing a new condition, a new technology, or a new era either formally or thematically. Recipients of awards will be determined by the juror, Rebecca Hart, associate curator and acting Head of Contemporary Art for the Detroit Institute of Arts, and announced at the opening reception. The artist chosen as “Best of Show” will receive a solo exhibit in the Kreft Gallery at Concordia University Ann Arbor in the 2010-2011 season. Only original artwork produced within the past five years will be accepted-reproductions are not permitted. Entrants must be 18 years of age or older to apply. $25 entry fee for up to 2 submissions.

SHOW: National Wet Paint Exhibition

EXHIBIT TYPE: Online Exhibit — Zhou B. Art Center, Chicago

DEADLINE: December 6, 2009.

MEDIA: Artists currently enrolled in a MFA program in an American college or university or artists who received an MFA degree within the last two years. All works must be or incorporate paint as their main medium for this painting exhibition. We welcome non-traditional interpretations of what painting is, how its done, and how it is exhibited or displayed. All submitted works will be considered for this artist exhibition. Original work only. No works previously exhibited at the Zhou B Art Center will be accepted. The curator reserves the right to accept or reject any work for inclusion into this exhibition.

DESCRIPTION: 2010 marks the first decade of the 21st Century. Under the watchful eye of a technology driven society, online social networking and cyber-interaction communities, a group of young artists have been evolving and redefining one of the oldest mediums of art. The National Wet Paint Artist Exhibition will be a contemporary art painting exhibition outlook and an overview of promising artists across the United States currently working in the medium of painting. Wet Paint refers to the idea that this is a fresh group of artists (MFA candidates/graduates) working in painting media. Wet Paint will pose the following questions: How is the next generation of artists redefining one of the oldest art mediums? How are new technologies impacting their painting materials, methods, techniques, processes and ideas? How are graduate programs in America reshaping painting? Krzysztof Wlodarski, aka Kali, born in 1977 in Poland. Graduated at University of Zielona Gora, Poland in philosophy. Wlodarski, influenced by the art of Gottried Helnwein, Saturno Butto, Joel Peter Witkin and modern Bodyart movements, is now showing a series “The Sleep of Reason.” Wlodarski is also musician , film-maker, and tattoo artist, living and working in London.

Wlodarski says, “These works are reflecting a head-on collision between the primary sphere of instinct (sex & violence) and the secondary sphere of culture (taboo). This leads to a sort of synthesis, its necessary result being a transgressive form of art.

“I call it ‘The sleep of reason,’ a reference to Goya , because this is the manifestation of all that is pre-rational, anti-enlightenment, anti-creative. It is about the moments of insanity when the language and logic are suspended in favour of primal drives that are otherwise subject to suppression by cultural structures.”

Plagued by anxiety and bitterness from a devastating illness, Francisco Goya (1746 – 1828) created “The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters,” one of 80 etchings in his “Los Caprichos” series–scathing critiques of human errors and vices of contemporary religious and political figures. “The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters” portrays Goya, often believed to be the Father of Modern Art, hounded by creatures that threaten the ignorant mind. Goya believed that imagination, combined with reason, would keep these monsters at bay.

I am drawn to the passion with which Wlodarski’s interprets his vision of contemporary culture–shaped by sex and violence, destruction and morbidity. The connection to Goya, and sometimes startling lack of connection, is a comment on Wlodarski’s view on where we are as a culture today. His striking use of color gives us a momentary glimpse into the moments of insanity between the rational thoughts. The moments without control or norms.

It is easy to feel transported to another place or time by these works, and maybe that’s the sugar that makes it easier to take the medicine–the knowledge that we are all there, on the cusp, all the time. It is…the buttery taste of scotch with the charred character of bourbon.
