Why can’t we play with our food? If I have to get my kid to use green peas as a moat to his mashed potato castle to get dinner eat, well, so be it. And honestly, you can’t tell me that having the requisite clown face of barbeque sauce while eating ribs isn’t part of the the yum of it all. I’ll play with my food if I want to. JUROR: Angela Bacon-Kidwell is an award winning photographer and visual artist that lives and works in Wichita Falls, Texas where she lives with her husband and young son. Angela has a BFA from Midwestern State University, Wichita Falls, Texas, with specialization in painting and photography.

Her work emerges from her journey of recovering a sense of self, strength and spirituality through an examination of her identities as daughter, granddaughter, wife, mother and artist. Her photographic work has received numerous awards and honors and has been exhibited and published both nationally and internationally.

AWARDS: Cash prizes of $250 each will be awarded for The Juror’s Award and The Director’s Award, along with a $100 prize for the Visitors’ Choice Award. There will also be five Honorable Mentions.

I AM an emotional eater, and “grumpy” is not an unusual reason for a snack at my house. Just like when I am sick, it is comfort (read junk) food that elevates my mood. Macaroni and cheese, potato chips and dip, tortilla chips and salsa, peanut butter and donuts (this one may just be me), baked brie ‘n’ raspberries…all reasons for a happy face and, in my case, a larger arse. Just a year or so after the 25th anniversary of my birth, I began my love affair with cheese. Well, more accurately, I began working behind the counter of a gourmet cheese shop. A world that had previously been defined by cheddar, Swiss and American cheeses now suddenly included choices between cow, goat and even sheep’s milk cheeses. Sometimes 25 years is the turning point. This next call wants to see your perspective on the past 25 years’ events. Whatcha got?

This June, ARTs East New York is hosting a pop-up gallery tour and invites artists in all disciplines to submit work for exhibition relating to the three themes below. All three exhibitions will be part of a one-night pop-up gallery tour on June 22nd in East New York. I ART East New York will be displayed in establishments around the New Lots Triangle. Juneteeth will be showcased about the perimeter of the New Lots Library. Threadz will have a month long run at the ARTs East New York gallery.

I ART East New York: East New York might be somewhere you visit, the place where you work or the community you call home. Even if you’ve only heard about the neighborhood, we invite you to explore East New York through your art. Pieces that most creatively and positively portray the culture, character and community of this Brooklyn destination will be chosen for exhibition.

Juneteenth: A Revelation of Freedom: Juneteenth commemorates the day on which African Americans in Texas, who had been kept enslaved two and a half years past the abolition of slavery, finally received news of their freedom. For this exhibit, we are requesting works that celebrate this moment of enlightenment, pay homage to ancestors who afforded this autonomy and investigate the African diaspora at large as a legacy of liberation. Pieces that best honor and examine the legacy of the African experience in the United States will be included in this important exhibit.

Threadz: Untwining Mistaken Messages Within the Fabric of Hip Hop. The tragic murder of Trayvon Martin forces us to think seriously about perceptions of Hip Hop culture and its representations in mainstream society. The reigning image of Black youth centers on the Hip Hop aesthetic, a mode of expression that can be identified by styles of art and fashion. We ask artists to examine Hip Hop as a depiction of the urban lifestyle, its reception by the larger public and its potential for positively reflecting the African American youth experience. This exhibition is being held in honor of Trayvon Martin, and works speaking directly to this heartbreaking death, and its connection to Hip Hop, are especially encouraged.

12 12 GALLERY announces an open call to all artists creating works on paper, the International Juried Exhibition of Works on Paper 2012. The exhibition juror, Richard Waller, Executive Director of University Museums, University of Richmond, will award up to $1000 in cash prizes.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists age 18+

MEDIA: Works on paper to be considered for the exhibition. Eligible works incorporate the use of any medium on paper, including analog and digital photography.

DEADLINE: May 4, 2012

NOTIFICATION: May 20, 2012

ENTRY FEE: $25 (US)for 3 images. Add’l images $5 (US) each, for up to 5 total

JUROR: Richard Waller is the Executive Director of University Museums, including the Harnett Museum, the Joel and Lila Harnett Print Study Center and the Lora Robins Gallery of Design from Nature. He received his master of fine arts degree from Yale University after graduating from Mankato State University in Minnesota. He also received a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

Before joining the University in 1990, Waller worked at the Brooklyn Museum of Art for 19 years and taught at New York’s Parsons School of Design. He has been a curator, judge and organizer of many historical and contemporary art exhibitions and has written extensively on visual art.

AWARDS: Cash prizes up to $1000 will be awarded solely at the discretion of the exhibition juror. Recognition of work by Professor Waller may also be designated to the extent he deems appropriate. These designations may not include a cash prize.

I am the soup queen. I accidentally found out during a run of bad weather one winter during which we couldn’t make it to the grocery store that I am really good at making soup. I had a whole series of artwork happen because I accidentally put myself in a situation where I was trapped at home too. My point? Maybe life is just a series of accidents, and with any luck, maybe more of them will be happy than not. If you’ve accidentally (or purposefully) shot 10 seconds of good film, here’s your chance to put it to good use.

The Soap Factory’s Ten Second Film Festival celebrates innovative and spontaneous filmmaking. Voted Best Festival in 2011 by City Pages, The Ten Second Film Festival is a celebration of micro-cinema and the everyman—a chance for anyone to be a cinematic god, if only for 10 seconds.

This year The Ten Second Film Festival is changing nights! In 2012, The Ten Second Film Festival takes place on a new night—June 9th—as part of Northern Spark, the dusk-to-dawn arts festival in Minneapolis and Saint Paul.

Festival emcees this year will be the Twin Cities’ newest sketch comedy troupe, The 3rd Kind featuring Ian Fishman, Hannah Wydeven, Sidney Oxborough, Dave Christians, Kevin Albertson. For the third consecutive year, MPLS.TV will also be bringing the love. Come early to snag a good spot, people watch, and enjoy this mainstay of summer, The Ten Second Film Festival.

ELIGIBILITY: Anyone can enter.

DEADLINE: May 1, 2012

NOTIFICATION: Filmmakers will be notified of acceptance by May 25th. Accepted films will be screened on June 9th at The Soap Factory.

ENTRY FEE: There is no entry fee for up to 6 films.

JURY PROCESS: Email your films to: tensecond@soapfactory.org. All films submitted will be juried by curator Lillian Egner and a panel of trusted advisors. Films will be sorted into ten categories determined at the time of selection.

On the night of the festival, prizes are awarded to the best films in each category. Winning films are determined by a panel of local celebrity judges and audience reaction. Past categories have included: What the hell am I looking at?, Dance Off, Moment of Zen, Mindless Violence, Best Documentary, Wait For It…, Most Disturbing, Kubrick Award, and Under the Influence.

HOW TO SUBMIT A FILM: Email your ten second film submissions to The Soap Factory at tensecond@soapfactory.org. Include ONE film per email (ie: if you have multiple submissions, send a separate email for each). The subject line of the email should be the film’s title.

The Soap Factory exhibits work in its galleries throughout the year. Exhibitions curated from submissions and could have as many as 8 artists. The Soap Factory is a 120-year old ex-industrial warehouse on the banks of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists. They are particularly interested in proposals conceived specifically for The Soap Factory galleries. (So do your homework!) Their programming is unique in that they select only a small proportion of the artists they exhibit from their pool of submissions. They commonly receive 400 artist submissions per season.

One of my very favorite foods as a kid was animal crackers. I liked to line them up in pairs and then bite off their heads and legs before eating the bodies. A little gruesome, and I’m not certain what that says about me. But I do crack my goldfish crackers in half before I eat them even now. Do food interpreters (like dream interpreters) exist? More than just children’s books. More than just children’s books published in the United States. This competition includes anything and everything related to reaching children under the age of 12.

ELIGIBILITY: Any work produced or published in the calendar year 2011. Entries need not be published in 2011 as long as the imagery was produced during that time period. Entries are accepted from every country. Published and non-published work is eligible. Entries may be made by the illustrator, art director, author, editor or publisher.

MEDIA: Children’s books—published and unpublished, book covers—published or unpublished, children’s illustration—published or unpublished, educational materials, editorial, children’s programming, miscellaneous and young adult.

DEADLINE: Deadline for the Children’s Show is April 17, 2012. Entries must be upload or postmarked no later than this date.

ENTRY FEE: Single entries are $30—single title or single illustration, Series entries (3-5 titles by the same illustrator or a series of illustrations with the same theme) are $35.

JURORS: The international panel of judges for this year’s 3×3 Children’s Show include:
