the table

My dining room table is round.  This makes placemats hard to find because the corners prevent the placemat from getting close enough to the edge.  I could buy some ugly plastic ones and trim them, but I want the same beautiful fibers like silk with embroidery or elegant bamboo.  And then I saw them, placements made specifically for round tables.  This has made my month, thank-you-very-much.  This next Call is all about fibers.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries for Fantastic Fibers 2013 hosted by the Yeiser Art Center (Paducah, KY), Paducah’s Gateway to the Arts.  This is show really is fantastic, and you can enter for as little as $12.  This is a gem for fiber artists…

Never underestimate the power of food.  Grapefruit is now known to interfere with over 70 medications, and many antibiotics have warnings about orange juice.  And I am certain that somewhere there are geneticists trying to modify both of these fruits to fix the problem–which is scary, but I digress.  The world is your buffet, but you have to make your choices carefully.  This next Call looks like a good call to me.   But, take a look for yourself…

a day?

One of the things I miss most about being able to shop at the Farmer’s Market or local orchard during the winter is the ability to get wax-free fruit.  When I see a waxed apple, I have to assume it is really old.  Yes, fruit is waxed to make it “pretty” for consumers, but it is also done to seal in moisture and preserve “weight” for as much as a year.  Pick the ugly fruit, please.  This next Call uses wax in a much better way.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Conrad Wilde Gallery (Tucson, AZ) for their 8th Annual Encaustic Invitational.  This show is curated, not juried, and could be a great opportunity…

I wrote a post a while back about a report I heard that claimed we would all be printing our food in 20 years.  Well, I was wrong.  Apparently you can print food now thanks to Cornell Creative Machines Lab.  OMG, I can’t take this.  Luckily, this next Call is about printing of a much better sort.  Take a look…

the time we cannot meet

The Detroit Print Exchange is the first of (hopefully many) annual juried art collaborations.  Artists are invited to submit an edition of 25 prints and in turn receive a complete portfolio of 20 prints from all 20 contributing artists.

In truth, the The Detroit Print Exchange is a chance to redefine what it means to be a young emerging artist, to prove that good things really do come in small packages, and to build connections between artists working around the country.

The Challenge is to create an edition of 25 prints in response to the words “ the time we cannot meet”.  Cryptic yet straight forward the words resonate with missed opportunity and honesty.  Today is there truly a time when two people cannot meet? Has technology removed time from how we interact? Explore, create and redefine.

Have you heard of “Zen Cooking”? It is the trendy concept that the joy in cooking is in the act of cooking, not the end product.  Really?  I don’t get it.  I cook BECAUSE I love to eat.  If the end product isn’t good, then what was the purpose?  I suspect it is a rare cook that really GETS this concept, and I wouldn’t be one of them.  This next Call celebrates rarity of of another kind. Investigate…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Darkroom Gallery (Essex Junction, VT) for Rare Earth. The entry fee at Darkroom is always low ($20), and they will provide free matting & framing if you work in their standard sizes. Take a look…

It is partially a gift of the subject itself, how varied the genre of landscape photography can be. Combine the extremes of the land each of us has walked, with the variety of visions each of us chooses to communicate, and we’re bound to witness just how rare our earth can be.

They are looking to see a range of what landscape images can be: macro details to vast panoramas, conceptual narratives, abstractions, document, or relational gestures. They hope to feature varied points of view from every crook and bend, angle and junction, on the globe. With your unique images, Darkroom Gallery will honor the extents of this Rare planet we call Earth.

JUROR:  It is no wonder William Neill has developed a deep, spiritual connection with nature, being a resident of the Yosemite National Park area since 1977. His award-winning photography has been widely collected and exhibited in museums and galleries.

His work has been published in several books, and a retrospective collection of his finest landscape photographs was published by Bulfinch Press/Little, Brown & Co, in 1997, entitled Landscapes of the Spirit. Several periodicals have published his images, and Neill writes a monthly column “On Landscape”, for Outdoor Photographer magazine. Neill’s corporate clients include: Sony Japan, Bayer Corporation, Canon USA, Nike, Nikon, The Nature Company, and Sony Music/Classical.

Perhaps most important to the task of jurying Rare Earth, is Neill’s extensive experience in close observation of others’ work – he has been an instructor of photography for 32 years. Mr. Neill is looking forward to the opportunity to see your work, for the purpose of curating what will be an awe-inspiring exhibition of landscape photographs.

Learn more from the Darkroom Gallery!AWARDS: All selected entries are exhibited in the Darkroom Gallery and included in a full color exhibit catalog. Juror’s Choice receives a 30×48″ vinyl exhibit banner featuring their image. People’s Choice gains free entry into a future exhibit.
