Could you host a dinner party for 4 weeks in a row? I’m not sure I could either. Feeding 6-8 people every day for a month has got to be a challenge. I think it would have to involve lots of pasta, casseroles and soups. But, it would be a great excuse to eat comfort food. This next Call will give you 4 weeks away in a creative atmosphere…and group meals. Check it out…

I-Park is both an open air and a closed studio laboratory for individual artistic pursuits in the fields of the visual arts, music composition/sound sculpture/design, moving image, landscape/garden design and creative writing. The artists-in-residence program offers a quiet, retreat-like environment conducive to exploration and experimentation – without the expectation of particular outcomes. Artists are free to conceive and execute new ideas or work on existing projects.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to artists internationally, aged 21+ years.

CATEGORIES: Visual Arts, Music Composition/Sound Sculpture/Design, Creative Writing, Moving Image and Landscape/Garden Design. Inter-disciplinary artists are welcome to apply for a residency at I-Park.

Love + Lust

Open to Interpretation is a juried book competition of photography, poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction. Each book begins with a themed call for photos. The chosen photos become the literary inspiration for the writers’ submissions. A book is created that matches each winning photo with two stories or poems that offer different interpretations of the image. The unique collaboration adds new dimensions to both the photos and the written word.

THEME: Love + Lust. Lust is an intense appetite, craving, or untamed desire. We lust for an array of things—money, power, objects, sex, or just living life. Love is a powerful affection or personal attachment and comes in a variety of forms, which can encompass romantic, sexual, platonic, narcissistic, or even religious feelings or attitudes. And sometimes love and lust overlap. What images capture these emotions for you?

JUROR: After a career as a New York Fashion Editor and working along side the greats of fashion photography, Aline Smithson discovered the family Rolleiflex and never looked back. Now represented by galleries in the U.S. and Europe and published throughout the world, Aline continues to create her award-winning photography with humor, compassion, and a 50-year-old camera.

She has exhibited widely. Aline founded and writes the blogzine, Lenscratch, that celebrates a different contemporary photographer each day and offers opportunity for exhibition. She has been the Gallery Editor for Light Leaks Magazine, is a contributing writer for Diffusion, has written book reviews for photoeye, and has provided the forwards for artist’s books by Tom Chambers, Flash Forward 12, Robert Rutoed, amongst others.

AWARDS: $1000 Cover Award, $500 Judge’s Choice Award Photography and $500 Judge’s Choice Award Writing or Poetry. All participants chosen, if so desired, will have their contact info indexed in the book so as they can be contacted directly regarding their work.

One of my most prized possessions is a stolen recipe for Caesar Dressing. A restaurant in Savannah, GA served Caesar salad that was created table side. My mother and I drove 100 miles just to have lunch. After telling many servers over the years of our 100-mile trek, I convinced one to give me the illicit recipe–strictly against their non-disclosure statement. It is fantastic. I keep the recipe, hand-written by the server, in a special place, home only to my inherited family recipes. Graceful Envelopes

The contest was created in 1995 by the Smithsonian Institution’s National Postal Museum, which administered it until delegating responsibility to the Washington Calligraphers Guild in 2001.

Beginning in 2003, the National Association of Letter Carriers agreed to partner with the Washington Calligraphers Guild and exhibit the Adult winners.

In addition to promoting the art of calligraphy, the Graceful Envelope Contest celebrates the role of letters in binding people together and serves as a reminder that the people who deliver the mail are career government employees who take pride in their work and care about the communities they serve.

ELIGIBILITY:
Open to all artists

MEDIA: Each entry must be a stamped envelope, either manufactured or handmade, delivered through the U.S. Postal Service. The envelope will not be opened. Size may not exceed 7×9 inches. Standard #10 business envelopes are also permitted. Some envelope sizes require additional postage.

DEADLINE: Postmarked no later than Monday, February 25, 2013

NOTIFICATION: May 2013

ENTRY FEE: None

JURORS: Judging will take place in April 2013 by three professionals from the postal, calligraphic and arts communities.

AWARDS: Although no prizes will be awarded, winners will receive certificates and possible media publicity. I just found out my stove won’t go below 225°. I was preparing to roast chickpeas instead of drying them in my dehydrator. But, I usually slow roast them at 200°. Hmph. Those 25 degrees make a difference. You know what I mean. Haven’t you ever split the difference when you had to bake two things at two different temperatures at the same time? Something usually suffers. I’ve eaten many a soggy crust pizza because of this dilemma. Well this next Call comes from a gallery whose very name involves a melting point reference. Intrigued?

I have a long-standing addiction to pasta. More accurately, I am addicted to that slightly drowsy, completely relaxed feeling I have when I finish a beautiful Italian meal. My friends have been trying to get me to read Wheat Belly, but I’ve resisted for fear that I would end up having to give up my favorite pasta, whole wheat couscous. I cannot bear the thought. JUROR: Jim Casper is the founder and director of Lens Culture, an international photographic arts organization based in Paris. He is publisher and editor of Lens Culture’s popular international online magazine which explores contemporary photography, media, and world cultures.

In its November 2012 yearly round-up of the best photography websites, publications and galleries, the UK Guardian wrote: “Lens Culture features essays, slideshows, audio and visual interviews and incisive criticism, making it one of the most authoritative and wide-ranging sites.” Lens Culture hosts the annual international photography portfolio review conference in Paris, Lens Culture FotoFest Paris, and sponsors the yearly Lens Culture International Exposure Awards competition for photography and multimedia.

Casper also produces a series of audio and video interviews, titled “Lens Culture Conversations with Photographers”. He serves on juries of several international photo competitions, curates shows, lectures, conducts workshops, and writes about photography.

SALES: All work in the Exhibition will be offered for sale. Artists may consult with Gallery Photographica to determine prices. Gallery Photographica retains a 40% commission on sold works.

AWARDS: The juror will designate Gold Medal and Silver Medal awards. Gold Medal award winners will be in the San Francisco Exhibition. Gold and Silver Medal award winners will be displayed in their online gallery, with links to the artists’ sites. $6,000 (USD) in awards will be granted to 3 Gold Medalists as follows: 1st Place $3,000, 2nd Place $2,000, and 3rd Place $1,000.

I’ve never cared for drinking water. I know, I know. Shame and guilt. I drink unsweetened decaffeinated iced tea by the gallon. But somewhere along the way I noticed a few wrinkles and sags in my face. Shortly thereafter I tripped across an article extolling the wonders that drinking water promises for your skin. It was hard, but I stuck with it hoping for miraculous results. Now I regularly crave water in addition to all the tea that I still drink. Of course, it made no noticeable difference in my skin, but it IS proof that I am not immune to the vanity that rears its ugly head as we age. This next Call is all about skin. I love this theme…

I talk a lot about food. I take food for granted. I have been in some pretty horrible financial situations over the years, but I always knew that there would be a next meal for me and my family. Not everyone has that luxury. So, while I blather on about the pros and cons of of reducing dairy in my diet, there ARE people in my community, and yours, that wish whether or not they have dairy was their CHOICE. This next Call is artistic in nature, related to food, and may be one of the hardest Calls to get you to follow through. Please investigate…

Empty Bowls

Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to fight hunger and was created by The Imagine Render Group.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: The basic premise is simple: Potters and other craftspeople, educators and others work with the community to create handcrafted bowls. Guests are invited to a simple meal of soup and bread.

DEADLINE: On-going as long as someone in your community is hungry

SALES: In exchange for a cash donation, guests are asked to keep a bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. The money raised is donated to an organization working to end hunger and food insecurity.

It is the collective genius of all the people involved that has made Empty Bowls what it has become. Events have now taken place across the United States and in at least a dozen other countries. Many millions of dollars have been raised and donated to hunger-fighting organizations. We could never have imagined all the things people have done or all the ways the project has touched people.

Each individual or group organizing an event designs it around the needs of their own community and is responsible for their own event. We ask that all such events are called Empty Bowls so that the idea can continue to spread.

Please make your event inclusive, insist that it maintain a high level of integrity, include an educational component to raise awareness, and give the money raised to an organization helping to feed people in need.

The largest hunger-relief organization in the United States, Feeding America, reports that the nation’s food banks could soon be overwhelmed by demand. Statistics show that 1 out of 8 Americans struggle with food insecurity every day. Millions of people have lost their jobs during the most recent recession and the number of food stamp recipients has increased dramatically. Your help is needed now more than ever.
