The art will be shown in approx. 40 shops, restaurants and galleries in Ojai from Nov. 7 -24, 2013.   The opening weekend is Nov. 7-10, coinciding with the Ojai Film Festival’s Focus Earth screenings. Every year, nearly 4,500 people attend the film festival events. The goal is to stimulate environmental awareness, encourage conservation, and promote new ways of thinking about art, sustainability, and the environment.

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists

MEDIA:  DISCARTED asks artists to work with trash, discarded objects and materials to raise questions and ideas, aesthetic and moral, about the life of the planet our wasteful society threatens.  Art from trash, discarded objects and material: Submitted work may be reasonably considered ‘Art from trash, discarded objects and material’ if it is entirely, or primarily, composed of at least 75% material(s) that would have otherwise been disposed into the waste streams. Accepted art includes collage, assemblages, wall hangings, sculpture, other 2 or 3-dimensional artwork and moving or projected images.

JUROR:  Deborah Munk has served as the Director of the Artist in Residence Program at Recology since 2007.   The Artist in Residence Program at Recology San Francisco is a unique art and education program that provides Bay Area artists with access to discarded materials, a stipend, and a large studio space at the Recology Solid Waste Transfer and Recycling Center. By supporting artists who work with recycled materials, Recology hopes to encourage people to conserve natural resources and promote new ways of thinking about art and the environment.

AWARDS:  First Place $1500; Second Place $800; and Third Place $500.

SALES:  60% will go to the artists, 30% of the sale will go to the shop or venue where the art is displayed, 10% to Ojai Art Festival.

Olive oil flows freely in my kitchen.  I use it in everything from the obvious, sauteed mushrooms and onions, to baking and sweet treats like peanut butter cookies and brownies.  Olive oil when combined with onions, celery and carrots become the foundation for almost every savory dish that exits my kitchen.  It is the basis upon which everything else is built.  Many feel that paint occupies that same space in the arts.  This next Call wants your view on the media…

INVISIBLE Rejection

I don’t like to have anyone cook in my kitchen other than my husband.  I’m just territorial that way.  I feel judged and inadequate, and I don’t understand why.  I have also never had a guest blogger on AAAD.

But, with the holidays slowly approaching, inevitably I will have to endure guest chefs in my kitchen.  And today, we will have a guest blogger.  There is a time for most things in this life, and today it is time for this to be said, even if not by me…

INVISIBLE REJECTION

“One day, someone more energetic than me will compile a “best practices” manual for galleries holding juried art exhibitions. The first page of the manual will contain a list of basic commandments to be followed under all circumstances. The first commandment will read something like ‘Thou shalt always include a letter of acceptance or rejection.’

“It seems like basic common sense, right? It’s an obvious no-brainier and normally what you would expect from anyone who considers themselves to be an art professional. It’s also the polite thing to do.

“You would be surprised, however, how often such basics are neglected. Over the last year or so, it’s happened to me on multiple occasions. The deadline for notification comes and goes and there’s no word. Trying to be polite, you wait several days under the assumption that maybe the juror’s dog ate your images or perhaps the gallery director had some sort of bizarre gardening accident and the notice was delayed. Then, with great reluctance, you follow up with an e-mail asking politely if there has been a delay. Much to your chagrin, you are told that your work was not selected and that only accepted artists were notified. To make matters worse, the gallery suggests that this is actually common practice.  Well, I’m not buying it…

No matter how you slice it,
informing artists by this default mechanism
(The invisible rejection letter)
 amounts to no notice at all.
It’s unprofessional,
it’s lazy,
and it’s simply not polite.

 

“My wife raised me to send thank you notes and I expect similar behavior from art professionals. If you don’t have the stomach to send rejection letters, get out of the juried art show racket. Alternatively, at least spell out such practices in big, bold type somewhere in the call to artists.”

So I’m a little shy about my food knowledge.  My friends, readers and even my family ask food questions all the time with the assumption that I will know the answers because I write about food everyday.  And, if you need to know how to boil the perfect egg, I’m your woman.  But, I can’t tell you the flavor profile of every fruit, veggie and meat on the planet because I haven’t tried them ALL.  I’m working on it though. The natural world has fascinated photographers since the invention of the medium. Botanicals are props in portraiture, examined in landscapes, and rendered as patterns in décor and apparel.

Preserving the ephemeral quality of plant-life as a still image allows viewers to contemplate the beauty and complexity of natural forms, but it also allows artists to re-purpose nature for our own expressive ends. Whether in bloom or decay, edible or admirable, mammoth or miniscule, all interpretations of flora are welcome for The Kiernan Gallery’s exhibition, Botanicals.

JUROR: Sharon Beals is the author and photographer of Nests: Fifty Nests and the Birds that Built Them. Her images have been published in both science and art publications, including Scientific American and American Photo, which named Nests one of the best photo books of 2011.

Her work is in many private collections and was purchased by Art in Embassies for the US Embassy in Riga. Following her environmental path, she collects and photographs beach plastic to make large scale, deceptively beautiful yet confrontational prints. She is represented by Cordon/Potts Gallery in San Francisco.
