CALL for ENTRIES: Abstract 2017

Learn more about the Abstract exhibit from Art-competition.net!CHOCO-alot

Did you eat eclipse doughnuts?  Krispy Kreme® temporarily replaced their world-famous doughnut glaze with a chocolate variety.  People waited in line for hours.  I only know one person who actually bought a dozen because no one else I know is that patient. Every restaurant in town tried to make a connection to the eclipse, no matter how abstract.  This next Call is all about the abstract. Prizes include a $500 artist grant…

Check out this Call for Entries from Art-Competition.net for Abstract 2017. $25 entry & no shipping.  The media is pretty wide open too. Do you have abstract work to show?  Take a look at this opportunity…

OPEN CALL: Greenshields Grant

Learn more about available Artist Grants from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation!the deepest CUT

If you want to learn to cook well, I recommend starting with knives.  Every dish is made more difficult with a dull knife.  I had a brief affair with being a chef that put me in cooking school for a year.  The first thing I had to buy was a full set of very expensive knives.  (My mother had mine monogrammed. No kidding. SO embarrassing.)  Fear not, you can start with just a couple of not-so-expensive knives.  Everyone starts somewhere.  This next Call is looking to help artists just making their start.  Need funding?

Check out this Open Call from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation (Quebec, Canada) for Artist Grants.  No entry fee & a ongoing deadline makes this grant the perfect opportunity for students & beginning artists.  Take a look…

A grocery budget surplus comes around rarely in my house, but alas, it magically appeared this week.  I was tempted to be practical and buy a back-stock of staple items.  But at the last minute, I came across tamarind pods and decided to splurge.  I’ve always wanted to make my own tamarind paste just to know if would be better than what I could buy.  It isn’t, but I can now say I’ve done it, ha.  The next Call could put a surplus in your art budget or at least help you meet your budget.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: WAO Photography Award

Learn more about the $1000 Photography Award from WorkingArtist.org!FOOD rewards

Today I had a view of 7 U.S. States (Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Alabama) during lunch at Cafe 7, high atop Lookout Mountain.  I navigated the short climb through Rock City up to Lover’s Leap and took the obligatory selfie with my husband before being seated at the last available table for late lunch.  After a weekend of hard work on the road, I felt a sense of culinary karmic justice when my fried green tomato sandwich arrived at my table topped with Benton’s bacon, avocado puree & chipotle mayonnaise. It was a photo finish to a spectacular day.  This next Call could be YOUR photo finish.  Take a look…

CALL to ARTISTS: Purchase Award / Artist Grant

Learn more about the Purchase Award from WorkingArtist.Org! chicka-chicka-CHICK

You can always find chickpeas in my cabinet.  Be they canned or dried, they are a go-to item that has so many uses –from toasted finger food in the spring, to protein-rich soups in winter.  Then there’s hummus, of which I never tire.  Chickpeas even make a tasty addition to sweet-infused trail mix. I appreciate the versatility.  This next Call awards artists from a wide variety of media.  And what’s more versatile than a cash award?  Nothing.  Take a look…

sweet TATERS

I am mourning the upcoming loss of eggplant which goes out of season locally very soon.  But with the end of one season, come the beginning of another.  My beloved sweet potatoes are at their sweetest, and the upcoming frost in late October or early November will make them perfection.  I cannot wait.  Try it.  Buy a sweet potato now, then wait until December or January and try them again.  The difference is astonishing.  This next Call is like the sweet potato, anxiously anticipated and finishes sweet.  Take a look…

CALL to ARTISTS: Purchase Award

Learn more from workingartist.org!fast FOOD

Groceries arrived at my door this week.  You see, we chose to become a one-car family years ago.  We live fairly remotely –2.5 miles from the closest two-lane road and nearly 10 miles to a minor four-lane highway.  So, when the water pump on our car erupted in the driveway, getting groceries became a challenge for the weekend. Luckily, we have access to a grocery delivery that costs less than the taxi to and from the grocery store would cost.  Some days, you just need a little help.  This next Call wants to offer a little help to artists.  Take a look…

Enjoy FREE resources from artandartdeadlines.com!

Over the past seven years Art&ArtDeadlines.com has evolved.  If you haven’t been with us from the beginning, just assume we’ve always been this fabulous.  But if you’ve been reading for 5+ years, well, we’re happy to have had a witness to the transformation.  The fundamental change from rambling, long posts to shorter posts in standard formatting came somewhere around year two, followed quickly by changes to color and imagery.  Last year the branding got more consistent, and the pics grew in size.

Even my taste in food has changed over time.

____

This year we have begun to follow through on the art portion of Art&ArtDeadlines.com with the #artistoftheday posts, but we still have a lot of work to do.  And the next step is offering additional resources for professional development like grants, purchase awards and residencies –maybe even a guest post or two.

If you want to help, we welcome your suggestions, need your re-posts & shares.  What do YOU need?  On a more personal note, I would welcome your feedback & support.  Seven years is a long time to post opportunities, and the payoffs have been huge on a personal level.  The artists and jurors and gallerists that I have have come to know and love and count amongst my friends and peers remains the biggest and most unexpected gift.  Thank you.  If we don’t know each other, comment or message or email me.  Say hello.  I’m here for, fingers-crossed, years to come.

GOODNESS

My food preferences have transformed.  Years ago, I appreciated more complex, layers of flavor, intrigued by how accurately, or not, I could dissect the ingredients of a sauce.  Now a beautiful polenta makes my day –organic, hand-ground corn, homemade chicken stock & aged Parmesan. Simple food allows me to seek out & celebrate quality ingredients without the need for clutter.  This next Call is simple; pay the fee & submit a link. Easy…

CUKES

Cucumber frequently replaces crackers & bread in our house due to a family-wide wheat allergy.  I love the crisp texture coupled with the ridiculously low price.  If you have ever grown your own, you know that they fruit prodigiously, so they cost precious little.  But I have recently volunteered to pay more for my cucumbers.  No, I didn’t go organic; I went English.  I can’t go back.  English cucumbers aren’t usually waxed because plastic wrapping helps contain the moisture, and they are less bitter due to the smaller seeds.  But the true benefit for me is that they seem to spoil at such a slow rate that I never have to throw anything away.  The benefit outweighs the cost.  The return on this next opportunity is worth every penny too.  Take a look…
