Visit the ART of Cooking!One of the most valuable assets to a cook is the money to buy groceries, but money won’t help if you don’t have anywhere to cook. State art agencies often provide both funding and the opportunities to use it.  I believe that state art agencies are under used by artists, and as a result, are often among the first to lose their funding during budget cuts.

In an effort to take away your excuses, here are all 50 of the state art agencies.  This is the second half– Montana to Wyoming.  Read about the State Art Organizations: Alabama to Missouri.  Contact them today.  Pour over their sites.  Download grant applications.  Don’t complain about the food until you’ve tried it.

Montana!26. North Carolina!33. Under Governor Dan K. Moore, the Arts Council became a statutory state agency in 1967. It operates today as an agency of the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources, the nation’s first cabinet level state agency for the arts, history, and libraries.

North Dakota!34. Rhode Island!39. South Carolina40. The Commission’s programs and activities fall into three major domains of public participation and service: Artist Development, Arts Education, and Community Arts Development.  South Carolina!The SCAC has produced nationally recognized initiatives in arts curriculum reform, rural arts development, dance touring and audience development, community design, electronic communications, media arts, and traditional arts infrastructure development—all supported and sustained by a committed, experienced staff of field representatives and arts discipline specialists. In each of its key domains, the agency has expanded its capacity through well-established partnerships with other state agencies and institutions and private groups, extending well beyond the traditional boundaries of the arts community.

South Dakota!41. Tennessee!

That commitment has continued to expand through the years to ensure that the citizens of Tennessee have access to, and the opportunity to participate in the arts. Texas!TAC builds better communities by investing public dollars in Tennessee’s nonprofit arts industry; providing services to citizens, artists and arts organizations; and undertaking initiatives that enhance Tennessee ‘s cultural life.

 43.  Texas Commission on the Arts, Post Office Box 13406, Austin, Texas 78711-3406, Phone: 512-463-5535.  The Texas Commission on the Arts’ mission is to develop a receptive climate for the arts in Texas.  To accomplish its mission, TCA awards grants, promotes the arts, and raises funds to enhance support of the arts in Texas.

Utah!44. Utah Arts Council, 617 E South Temple, Salt Lake City, UT 84102, Phone: 801-236-7555, Fax: 801-236-7556.   The Utah Arts Council conducts programs, directed by Council staff, which provide more than 500 outreach services (including financial assistance) to schools, local arts councils and organizations, community centers, performing groups and individual artists. Overall the Council serves as a catalyst for arts programming throughout the state, assisting arts organizations, groups and individuals in bringing the arts to the people of Utah.  The Utah Arts Council’s main offices are located at the historic Glendinning Home, next door to the Governor’s Mansion on South Temple. The Folk Arts Program is housed at the Chase Home in the middle of Salt Lake City’s Liberty Park. Public Art and Visual Arts Program staffs are housed in the south wing of the Rio Grande Depot.

Vermont!

It offers professional development opportunities and technical advice, collects and disseminates arts information, and acts as the state’s foremost arts advocate.  VAC is a grass-roots organization with statewide trustees elected from and by its membership.  As the only not-for-profit state arts agency in the country, VAC is uniquely qualified to unite both public and private resources to serve the following mission: To advance and preserve the arts at the center of Vermont communities.

Okay, I can't pass up the soap references...check this one out from Carol's Daughter!I love to support people and spaces whose mission it is to support the best in the arts.  I have a devoted reverence for human potential, and I am happy to have found a kindred spirit in The Soap Factory.  It is time for their Open Call for Submissions. 

Visit The Soap Factory in Minneapolis!This is not a fee-based, juried show.  The Soap Factory supports artists and their work not only by providing exhibition and studio space on an unprecedented scale, but also by providing skilled staff to aid artists in realizing new work, by paid stipends to both artists & curators, and by securing press articles & critiques in a unique gallery space with a national profile. The Soap Factory helps position artists to continue beyond their Soap Factory exhibitions.

The Soap Factory exhibition season runs from January – October, with three main blocks of exhibition programming. Exhibitions are often comprised of a large group show in the main galleries, three individual artist project rooms and two video rooms. For the 2010/2011 season, they are particularly interested in proposals for the winter months, which take into account the fact that The Soap Factory is unheated. Projects that propose to use the entire 12,000 sq feet of gallery space are always encouraged.

Their programming is unique in that they select the majority of the artists for exhibit from their pool of submissions. They commonly receive over 350 artist submissions per season.

Submission Guidelines for 2010 season:

  • Check out the Soap Factory's latest exhibit!Postmark deadline is November 30, 2009.
  • They do NOT accept e-mailed submissions.
  • Submissions are reviewed for the 2010 season, which runs from 1st May- 31st October.
  • Artists selected for the 2010/2011 season will be notified in late March 2010.
  • They may keep your submission on file for up to 8 months.
  • Do not call or email to check on your submission.
  • The Soap Factory does not return work. Please send only materials that you do not need returned.

What to send:

  • Submit your work to The Soap Factory!A cover page indicating the following information:
    • Name
    • Email
    • Phone
    • Address
    • Medium of submission
  • Up to ten color images of your work. Images must be Mac compatible (jPeg, tif, pdf) not less than 1500×2100 pixels.
  • Resume, artist statement and project description/proposal, if applicable.
  • They prefer that you submit video on DVD. DVD must be in Zone 1 format (readable in USA).
  • Work samples WILL NOT BE RETURNED. Please send only materials you do not need returned.

Visit emerge midwest art zine today!Are you inspired every time someone’s 5-foot cake doesn’t go splat on one of those cake bake-offs?  They make it look like anyone can do it. I find that knowing someone else has achieved results helps me distinguish between the opportunities I should seize and the ones that simply are not worth my time.  I recommend giving emerge midwest art zine a try.  I was honored to be juried into the April 2009 issue.

emerge is a specialty art zine, created by Sarah Earle, that is open to artists nationwide and is distributed quarterly to over 100 Midwest galleries (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin). Each issue features nine artists whose work is hand selected by a rotation of guest jurors.

The next issue should be January 2010.  The deadline has not been released as of this post, but you don’t have to wait until the last minute.  No really–you don’t.  Send your submissions today.

All professional artists, ages 18 or older, working in all media are encouraged to apply. Created by artist and graphic designer Sarah Earle, emerge is a powerful exposure tool for any serious studio artist in the country.  The cost to submit up to 10 images for consideration is only $15.  you can complete the entire process online in 15 to 20 minutes, or you can send your payment and submission via snail mail. I originally became an art gallery owner because I couldn’t afford the art I loved, and I wanted to be responsible for making at least some of the art I loved affordable.  But I assure you that your friendly blogger didn’t invent the idea of affordable art.  Neither did Art-O-Mat, but I love their take.

Your faithful blogger, R.L. Gibson,  has participated in other projects, and if you’ve got an extra $18 and want to be published…give it a try.  The deadline to sign up (& pay) isn’t until February of 2010; however, experience has taught me that these projects fill up REALLY fast.

This is as much a social experiment as it is an art exhibition.  Experimentation and thinking outside of the box is the name of the game.  The first time Art House Co-op did the Scavenger hunt project is was a blast. This time they will be traveling to Seattle with it. It seems like everyone really pushes the limits of their creativity for The Scavenger Project!

I love Redux. I juried a portrait knockdown for this art center when it still existed in borrowed space without a proper name.  The minds behind this organization embrace contemporary art in all it’s forms.  I encourage you to apply–that is why I’m sending out this little preview.  Let’s hope all the late November calls are as great as the opportunity at Redux.  Don’t forget to visit all of the November 16 – 30 Deadlines.

DESCRIPTION: Redux Contemporary Art Center produces 8 exhibitions per year in two gallery spaces. A diverse range of risk-taking exhibitions are produced each year covering a wide range of topics through solo, two-person and group exhibitions. Often Redux operates as a project space inviting artists to produce original works on site through varying lengths of residency, while engaging and interacting with our local community though special classes and artist talks. The Salisbury Sculpture show has announced a Call for Entries for the 2010 – 2011 show in Salisbury, NC. A successful initial run has built Salisbury’s reputation as a venue for First Class sculpture. The 2009 Sculpture Show drew coverage from UNC-TV and Our State Magazine as well as multiple local and regional media outlets.

Salisbury is a unique city with historic main street charm where public art is a mainstay in the city’s profile. The Salisbury Sculpture Show provides an appealing venue for artists and engages residents and visitors, generates citizen input & cultivates art patrons.

Selected pieces will be carefully sited to best enhance the sculptures’ visibility and accessibility. Exhibiting artists will receive a stipend. In addition, three sculptures from the 2009 or 2010 selections will be purchased for the City of Salisbury’s new Fiber to the Home Customer Service Center. A 25% commission on work sold during the show will help build funds for future public art projects.

DESCRIPTION: The Michael Peter Hayes Art Salon in Locust Valley, New York will host an exhibition of Artist Trading Cards more commonly referred to as ATCs from October 31 to November 27, 2009, to benefit the National Cancer Center (NCC) located in Plainview, New York. She previously served as Curator of Photographs at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and is the author of Elemental Landscapes: Photographs by Harry Callahan. Ms. Ware served as Assistant Curator in the Department of Photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum during the 1990s and organized the traveling exhibitions including, A Practical Dreamer: The Photographs of Man Ray. She has also worked at the Oakland Museum of California and began her career at the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service in Washington, D.C.
