Sometimes an egg is just an egg.  Yes, I love them benedict.  I love them scrambled, in caesar salad and as omelettes stuffed with goat cheese and peppers.  But sometimes an egg is great just as an egg.  The same is true of art.  While much of this site’s attention is directed at non-respresentational and contemporary art and photography, there is such a vast American tradition of representational work that I would be remiss not to celebrate that talent and potential in my readers as well.  Rachel Parker is one of my favorites.

Check out this Call for Entries from The Legacy Gallery for the 1st Annual Scottsdale Salon of Fine Art.  This show will fill a 10,000 square foot gallery in Scottsdale, AZ and offer a $10,000 first prize for Best of Show.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Scene on the Street

Click to Subscribe to www.ArtAndArtDeadlines.com by Email!FALAFEL ME, PLEASE!

I love living in the Great Smoky Mountains. The weather is amazing.  The mountains have to been seen to be believed.  It is a tiny town with many of the conveniences of living in a larger suburban city.  What’s missing?  Greek food…but we have lots of Italian. Thai food…well, we have Thai food, but it is a 10 mile drive from Gatlinburg.  And… Street vendors.  Yep, street vendors.  Sometimes you just want a falafel.

It will come as no surprise that this Call for Entries from Vermont Photo Space Gallery called Scene on the Street conjures images of hot dogs, taco trucks, and falafel stands.  Yes, I am that obsessed with food. But I feel certain that I can trust you to take a deeper look…don’t forget Vermont Photo Space offers free framing & matting on accepted entries!

CALL FOR ENTRIES: Scene on the Street

Learn more about the Vermont Photo Space Gallery! As the world becomes more paranoid about being photographed, especially “on the street” where there isn’t a chance to ask for permission first, the journalistic or documentary photographer still yearning to make candid images on the streets must be more creative, patient and sometimes deceptive.

This contest is asking the photographer to submit images that they feel capture the essence of candid street moments, with a special emphasis on images that tell a story, capture a unique moment or transcend all definitions by it’s magical quality.

I’m driven by this fact; that the work of photojournalists and documentary photographers can have a positive impact on the world. The access people give to their lives is precious as well as imperative for this important work to get done. Their openness brings with it a tremendous sense of responsibility to tell the truth but to also honor their stories.”

Kashi’s images have been published and exhibited worldwide. Along with numerous awards, including honors from Pictures of the Year International, World Press Foundation, Communication Arts and American Photography, Kashi’s editorial assignments and personal projects have generated six books.

FROM SHIP TO SHORE

Letting go of most of my stuff a few years ago was a life-altering experience.  When I decided to move to Gatlinburg, it just happened that the mountain-top chalet I chose came completely furnished.  After some thought, my husband and I decided to keep our own dishes & cookware, computers & TVs, art & art supplies and all of our child’s furniture and toys.  Everything else had to go.  I could pack everything I own in one day.  That’s freedom, folks.

STEP UP, LADIES!

I try my best to feature as many International all-inclusive shows as I can, but sometimes, just sometimes, I post a call for my own selfish reasons.  And ladies, this is one of those times.  While women certainly do not have the corner on art any more than they have the corner on cooking, we certainly have a unique voice…a unique recipe if you will.

Check out this Call for Entries from the Women’s Caucus for Art for their 2011 National Juried Exhibit.  Based on the idea of your own personal “Hidden City,” this exhibit could also help you make a connection to the Women’s Caucus for Art that could serve to give you and your artwork a new perspective that could last for years.

Call for Entries:
2011 National Exhibition

Artists are invited to explore their idea of their Hidden City , real or imagined, in an array of media. The theme may be broadly interpreted from an activist, political or personal context.

Womens Caucus for ArtNo matter our place in society, we all have our Hidden City, a place of refuge from gender, race, class and sexual exclusions, a place that shapes the feminist viewpoint. Some cities, like wrapped boxes, conceal unexpected gifts, others are riddles and lyrical abstractions.

These are performative spaces where we may imagine retribution for injustices, righting wrongs or conversely, delving into the dark side. Convince the viewer of its viability, a live space filled with passion and imagination!

Aside from food, there are a few themes that run through my blog posts.  Entering academic shows can be a huge plus for all artists…but I find that emerging artists, regardless of age, really benefit most.  If you get juried in to an academic exhibition, make every effort to attend the opening.  You’d be amazed by how much you can learn by being a fly on the wall when no one knows you’re there.  And remember, sometimes you can have your cake and eat it too…academic settings are great for art sales.
