Many moons ago, I had an electrified kitchen gadget for everything.  But as the years go by, I found myself drawn to the more manual side of cooking–good knives, a great mandolin, and compact do-hickeys that serve my family in many ways.  Give me a manual can-opener any time.  An electric can opener won’t do you a lot of good if the power goes out.  So, my kitchen is getting a little greener, and this Call for Entries encourages you to make your art a little greener.  Take a look…

Artists whose work is created through reduced or alternative energy are also encouraged to apply.

ELIGIBILITY:  Artists of all ages living in the United States are invited to apply.

Everyday around 11am I post “what’s for lunch” hoping it will nourish you creatively for the day.  Many of you receive my posts by email making them breakfast for you–the most important meal of the day. With my own art show only days from opening, I can’t cook today.  So, I have packed your lunch with a leftover worth repeating.  This next Call for Entries has a really low entry fee and invites you to wallow in the excess of the supersized.

Check out this Call for Entries from the Annmarie Sculpture Garden (an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institute) for Supersize: Bigger is Better?. The entry fee is only $20 for up to four pieces, and this is an excellent opportunity to GIVE IN TO EXCESS. Take a look!

Download the About Face Prospectus!What fuels our fascination with obscene quantities and obsessive amounts? From supersized to overstuffed, from bulk to buy-one-get-one, we are in a constant quest for more, more, more; yet we decry the after-effects of over-consumption. How do artists interpret these ideas in their work? This exhibition explores the art of the supersized. The jury seeks work that tackles the absurdity of art and life on a grand-scale. From humorous depictions to critical commentary, the jury seeks work that address these issues through their scale, proportion, and witty approach.

Supersize will be installed in the spacious Mezzanine Gallery of Annmarie Sculpture Garden’s Arts Building. With over 4000 sq ft of exhibition space, moveable walls, high ceilings, tile floors, an Arakawa hanging system, Internet access, and electricity, the Mezzanine Gallery can accommodate all sizes and types of installations. As Annmarie includes a thirty acre sculpture garden, outdoor works will also be included in Supersize.

DVD or computer based works must be exhibited on equipment provided by artist. Internet access is available. Bases and pedestals must well-balanced and sturdy. Annmarie has a limited number of bases available, please inquire. All frames must be black or silver and simple in design. All works that will be hung on the wall must have brackets that work with the Arakawa hanging system. More information on this system will be provided upon acceptance.

DEADLINE: March 31, 2011 is the deadline for your application.

ABOUT the ANNMARIE SCULPTURE GARDEN: An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, Annmarie is a thirty-acre public sculpture garden and arts center located in scenic Solomons, Maryland, on the Chesapeake Bay. The sculpture garden features a walking path which meanders through the forest, past permanent and loaned sculpture, including more than thirty works on loan from the Smithsonian Institution and the National Gallery of Art. The garden also presents a variety of special events, gallery shows, and engaging public art programs. The new Studio School offers creative classes taught by a talented faculty. The award-winning Arts Building, which opened in May ‘08, is a 15,000 sq.ft. museum-grade exhibition space that includes two large galleries, a gift shop, café, and a sunny patio that offers lovely views of the outdoor sculpture.

UMMY–YUMMY

I am not a fan of baby talk.  I don’t like it when adults talk to children in that voice and I certain don’t like to hear grown women use that tone.  However, as an adult, I seem to have developed a Suess-ian fondness for making up words where there is no need outside of making them rhyme.  I have not excuse.  None.  And, I’m thinking that my unnecessarily made up, substitute name for fried chicken, “chicky wicky” (yes, I wish I were kidding) will not make it into the dictionary as some verbal creation inevitably do–like the name of this show.

Check out this Call for Entries from the Northbrook Public Library for their Annual Juried Show.  The entry fee is reasonable.  There is NO COMMISSION taken by the show promoters, and this year’s theme ought to get you out of a rut and ready for the Spring art season!

Learn more about the Catawampus Show online!The Northbrook Public Library announces a call for entries for its 9th annual international juried art show held October 14 through November 30, 2011.  Artists should consider the theme, “Catawampus,” as a playful exploration of life turned on its head or simply an acknowledgment of what is different or a bit askew.  Prizes include a $2,000 purchase prize as well as numerous other prizes.

ELIGIBILITY:  The show is open to artists 18 years and older.

MEDIA:  2 and 3 dimensional  art executed within two years of entry date and not previously been displayed in the library.

SALES & COMMISSION:  The NPL does NOT charge a commission for show participation.  All sales inquires will be referred to the artists.  Contact information, provided by the artist, will be listed in the online and printed show catalog to facilitate sales.  The only sale to be handled by the NPL will be the purchase of the first-place award winner.

AWARDS:  One (1) $2000 purchase prize, one (1) second place cash award of $1000, one (1) third place cash award of $500, and two (2) Viewer’s Choice cash awards of $200.

Learn more about the Miniature Show at the Parklane Gallery!Parklane Gallery in Kirkland, WA welcomes miniature artists from across the country and around the world to enter their 19th Annual International Miniature Show, May 3 – June 5.

ELIGIBILITY:  Entries are admitted to the show following strict adherence to the international definition of miniature art:

1. Miniature paintings and sculptures are fine art on a small scale with minute attention to detail which can be enlarged or withstand close inspection without revealing any faults.

2. A representational subject should be no larger than 1/6th of its actual size. Subjects too small for portrayal in 1/6th or smaller than their actual size, may meet the spirit of a miniature if the work meets the above definition of miniature art. Non-representational work such as abstracts or surrealism may meet the spirit of a miniature if all other factors in the definition of a miniature are met.

3. Image size not to exceed 25 square inches (161cm). Sculptures may not exceed 8 inches (20.5cm) in any dimension, including the base.

Don't you just LOVE the miniature sculpture by Dalton Ghetti? He is not associated with this show. Ghetti is just one of my favorites.

MEDIA:  Photography, computer-generated art and any art that does not conform to miniature art and hanging guidelines will not be accepted. Artists may view or download the American Miniaturists’ Association Guidebook  for additional information.

ENTRY FEE:  US Funds Only. First entry fee is $25.00 plus $5.00 for each additional entry, up to 7 total entries. Local artists who hand-carry paintings to the gallery are not required to pay the shipping fee.

Smith is currently teaching at Portland Community College, adult classes at the Walters Cultural Art Center and at Cornell Estates, as well as the Sequoia Gallery in Hillsboro, Oregon.  He has exhibited his works in several International shows including the Cider Painters of America and the Seaside Gallery in North Carolina.  He has won a number of awards from the Cider Painters in past years including 2010.  He has also exhibited at numerous galleries on the Oregon Coast and in the Portland, Oregon areas.

AWARDS:  Jurors will award Best of Show $500, 1st Place $300, 2nd Place $200, PLUS Numerous Sponsor Awards.

I am not typically a food peeler.  With the obvious exception of bananas, oranges and pineapple (and a few others), I don’t often peel fruits or vegetables–from cucumbers to potatoes, apples to tomatoes.  That’s why I eat nectarines not peaches–no fuzz.  And I long for the days before fruits showed up in our grocery stores covered in shiny coats of wax.  This next call from the IEA is a far better use for wax than my apples.

Learn more about the International Encaustic Artists organization!Encaustic art has seen a resurgence in popularity since the 1990s with people using electric irons, hotplates and heated stylus on a variety of different surfaces including card, paper and even pottery.  The iron makes producing a variety of artistic patterns elementary.  However, the medium is not limited to just abstract designs, it can be used to create complex paintings, just as in other media such as oil and acrylic.

MEDIA:  Two and three dimensional encaustic art. Size is limited to 24″ x 36″ for wall hung art, 24″ x 30″ x 30″ for three-dimensional pieces

I am puzzled by folks who dislike the mildest of foods like potatoes.  But, I realize that taste and opinion vary from person to person.  Peace is something I’ve never known anyone to dislike.  While opinions vary as to how we should achieve it, everyone seems to agree that it is worth pursuing.  This call is another chance to say it with art… Peace Now.

Much of his personal work, including Sacred Sites of the Lakota, Disappearing Green Space, Silent Witness: Genocide and the Landscape, Sacred Places and Earth Meets Spirit are supported by grants and commissions and have been widely exhibited and collected.  His second book Earth Meets Spirit will be coming out in late 2010.  Doug continues to explore the notion of what is sacred in his photography and in his life. He lives in a passive solar home surrounded by trees in Saint Paul, MN.  When not out traveling the world he can be found tending his Japanese gardens or enjoying a strong cup of coffee while listening to loud music.  Personal heroes include Jimi Hendrix, the Dalai Lama and whoever invented the espresso machine.

Check out Crussell Fine Arts online!Crussell Fine Arts is pleased to announce an open call for our summer 2011 reference journal: International Survey.  This fine art periodical will be a reference book for curators, gallery directors and collectors, which will assist them in the development of shows and collections.

ELIGIBILITY & MEDIA:  Artists who work in all medias to submit three outstanding pieces created within the past two years.  Selected artists will be included in the summer 2011 edition of International Survey with a single image of their work and direct contact information.

Chicken soup is the ideal healing food for some.  I prefer what my family calls cardboard pizza and chips ‘n’ onion dip.  Nope, there no sense in it, but that is my food habit when sick.  I can’t tell you how many people I know that turned to art when they became desperately sick or injured.  The creation of art can be cathartic, and having work available when you are sick has a way of transporting you away from your own situation.  Submit work to this show to be a part of the creation and healing…

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists, groups or organizations who live and/or are located in the aforementioned areas or whose works are of a local interest, or those that pertain to a special theme designated by the hospital.  Editor’s Note:  They give preference to locals, but you don’t have to be local.

ENTRY FEE:  No Entry Fee.
