The thing I love most about being an artist is the creation of the work, but a close second is belonging to a community of artists. Most artists are happy to have a local group of close knit creative types with which to share, and I am overwhelmingly fortunate to have all of you. Okay, I’m tearing up more than when I chop onions, folks.
My point is…while many of us already have an artist family, we must remember that families have to grow or the lineage will end. I have a friend in NYC who is trying to expand her fold. Tryst Collective is looking for locals for a show called “BP’s Black Plague,” but never say never…send ’em your stuff because you just never know what could happen.
NYC-based arts group, the Tryst Collective, is looking for artists, photographers, sculptors, crafters, musicians, etc. who would like to be a part of a *one-night* group show – an art, music, and networking event.
This is the first installment of a series of themed Trsyt shows that will be held throughout the year. This particular show—BP’s Black Plague: a response in art and music— is centered around the reactions and responseswithin the creative community to the BP oil spill and/or our nation’s oil dependence.
Jessica Rowshandel writes, “We are still waiting for the date, but we are aiming for mid to late Sept. We are looking for local people who can get to the venue the night of the show since it’s a D-I-Y sort of thing.
“The venue is R Bar New York City, which is located at 218 Bowery Street, New York NY 10012. The event will be ticketed.
Artists and musicians are encouraged to sell their work and network -making money and new connections.
“We do not take any commission. We ask that the participants invite friends/followers because we need to pay for the space through ticket sales and more importantly, we are building a community.
“This is a very grassroots group and is held in nontraditional arts space, so participants should expect that. The venue allows us to hang work and we also have presentation and table easels. There will be a cash bar.”

As I frequently shout from the mountain top, I love portraiture. I love faces, specifically. But when I began my Psychomachia project with Arizona artist Jerry Portelli, he challenged me to limit my use of faces and to concentrate on other figurative depictions. The process started on a sour note but has ended up pretty sweet…a lemon drop, if you will.
Maybe “Figuratively Speaking,” the National Call for Entries from the Emerging Young Artist (EYA) Organization and the Village Gallery in Montgomery, AL, will be your lemon drop, too. The entry fee is a reasonable $35, and the Best of Show winner will get a solo show at the Village Gallery. You know you want the show…so go for it.
“Figuratively Speaking” is not limited to the traditional/contemporary aspects of the human forms, conditions, interactions, and abstractions of the human body. “Figuratively Speaking” includes figuration in contemporary design in terms of shapes, lines, and colors.

CHINTIA KIRANA was born in Jakarta, Indonesia in 1987. Chintia received her B.A. in painting from Auburn University of Montgomery in 2009. She was chosen to be the student Marshall, and Outstanding student from Liberal Arts Department. She currently represented by CAS Gallery in Montgomery, Alabama.
In 2009, she founded EYA (Emerging Young Artists) with the help of her co-founder Iman Serajj- Blanche. Currently, she is the gallery director/curator at Village Gallery in Montgomery, Alabama. Her works has been exhibited nationally and internationally. “To me art is a story, a memory, a passion, a love of creating something beautiful, and a mean to expresses my feelings.”
BARRETT BAILEY earned his MFA 2004 from the New York Academy of Art. Since then he has come back to his hometown of Montgomery, Alabama to use its residents as his subjects in his work.

He is a contemporary figurative artist trained in traditional academic methods. His portraits tell a story that can only be felt. Barrett teaches at surrounding schools and Museums throughout the year.
DANA BICE graduated from Auburn University at Montgomery in 1994, summa cum laude, with a B.A. in Fine Arts (Painting). In 1996, she earned her M.F.A. in Art History from Ohio University. She has also studied art history at The University of North Carolina—Chapel Hill.
For seven years, she has taught art history at A.U.M., and is currently its School of Liberal Arts’ Academic Advisor. Her juror experience includes art exhibitions sponsored by the Montgomery Art Guild, the Selma Art Guild, Montgomery’s Society of Arts and Crafts, and UNC-CH’s International Studies Center. She lives in Montgomery and creates paintings and assemblage art when she is not chasing after her five dogs.
SUZANNE JENSEN was born in Ft. Wayne, Indiana and raised in Indianapolis. Early on, her artistic talents were encouraged by her parents and teachers, who recognized her ability as a painter. As an undergraduate at Indiana State University, she began her first serious explorations in the visual arts working mostly in painting and drawing.

Then she discovered the ceramics studio. It was here that her skills and talents were most focused and challenged. In 1983, she graduated Indiana State with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with ceramics as her focus area. She went on the study ceramics at Tulane University, receiving her Master of Fine Arts in 1985.
She has been teaching in ceramics and sculpture at Auburn University Montgomery since 1987. Her works have been included in numerous national and regional exhibitions, and she has received many awards for her efforts. Ms. Jensen also has work on display in several galleries, most located in the South.

I find the sacred in everyday objects and appreciate the indulgence of artists that do. My house is filled with odd tidbits that have called out to me from here and there–things with which I cannot part for reasons unknown.
Peg Grady is a kindred spirit.
July marks the first month of the $2 Art Contest. The purpose of the contest was not to get rich, but to force myself to regularly review the work submitted to me by artists. Now you will get monthly Featured Artists, not quarterly or whenever the mood strikes me.
When choosing to force myself to be more diligent about posting Featured Artists, I neglected to account for how hard it would be for me to chose only one. I contemplated giving 2nd and 3rd place, but felt it somehow took away from the true winner–Peg Grady.
PEG GRADY
When I started investigating Peg Grady’s work, I was immediately drawn to her paintings and drawings that often take on the appearance of oil pastels and often incorporate a whimsy of color and typography. But once I found The Perfect Word Series, I was hooked. The work was, well, reverential…from a distance.
I noticed a statement on Grady’s site apart from her Artist Statement specifically for The Perfect Word: “An old thesaurus’s yellowed pages containing outdated phrases such as ‘apple pie order,’ ‘pretty kettle of fish’ and ‘tittle-tattle’ evoke a sense of history that delights me, sending me back to my elementary school classroom where the teacher told us of the value of Roget’s (not the dictionary style) thesaurus and how it branched off with differing shades of meaning, leading you to the perfect word.”
This led me back to the work, where I used the built-in magnifier to examine the details that tied it all together.
The simply whimsy in sacred found objects is all tied together in the simplicity ofThe Perfect Word.
Some of you may recall that I send out a questionnaire to all of my potential Featured Artists that asks a variety of questions from favorite foods to artistic influences, and I couldn’t wait to read Peg Grady’s answers to see if I really could have developed a picture of who she was based on this short series of work.
Artistic influences?Betye Saar, famous for her assemblage work, seems fitting. Robert Rauchenberg reinforced assemblage as Grady’s true love. Romare Bearden rounds it out.
Foods? Dark Chocolate and Almonds–indulgent. I would expect no less.
When asked if she liked to collaborate with others, she matter-of-factly explained that she doesn’t “play well with others. But I do run with scissors.”A woman after my own heart.
I have fallen in love with The Perfect Word series, and my heart is singing to hear that The Perfect Game series featuring a vintage book of solitaire layouts is in the works.
How did Peg Grady develop into the artist she is? Maybe it all ties back to her childhood…
“I was born in New York City where I appreciated the dinosaurs at the Museum of Natural Historymuch more than the Monets at the Modern. Finally I got older and (hopefully) wiser, became a California girl and fell in love with art.”
Thank you, Peg Grady for the reverence with which you treat the written word and for creating work that makes us think. Thank you for artwork that both celebrates and believes in the ability of the child in all of us to remember the whimsy of our childhood with the sacredness it deserves.
I love receiving personal mail. As connected and attached as I am to my BlackBerry, I still love receiving the occasional postcard. I get alot of funny mail, and most of you send me food related postcards…keep them coming.
The art of letter writing, postcard creating, and the sharing of artwork is alive and well in this Call for Entries from Guadalupe Art Dogs Gallery for Mail Art with the timely theme of Currency. AND NO ENTRY FEE. Take a look:
Guadalupe Art Dogs Gallery is located in the Old Ingram Loop artists’ colony on the banks of the Guadalupe River in Ingram, Texas, and they are calling for entries in its inaugural international Mail Art Show. The show will open on September 10th and will run through October 6. Entries must arrive no later than Saturday September 4th.
The theme of this year’s show is “Currency,” a subject on almost everyone’s mind these days. At one time or another, in one place or another, virtually every kind of object has been used as currency – coins, paper, gold nuggets, shells, goats, chocolate, brides, baseball cards, IOUs – the possibilities are endless.
Also please note that “currency” doesn’t necessarily refer to a medium of exchange. For example, events can have currency (current events); rivers can have currency ( if you want to stretch the meaning a little and make a pun) and of course there’s always currency jelly ( or is that currant?) So you get the idea, right? Take the idea of “currency” and stretch, fold, bend and mutilate it to come up with your own interpretation.
GUIDELINES: This show will be conducted in accordance with the principles that guide the Mail Art Movement worldwide. Submissions can be any shape, any size – as long as they have the appropriate postage attached. They do NOT have to be flat two dimensional works, and they do NOT have to arrive in an envelope – although of course they can be two dimensional and be sent in envelopes if that’s what the artist wants.
ENTRY FEE: There is no entry fee, and no limit on the number of pieces that can be submitted. There will be no prizes other than the “People’s Choice” awards.

As with all their shows, the Mail Art show will appear online approximately two weeks after the opening, so if you can’t come to see the show in person just log on and enjoy browsing.
Entries will not be returned unless the appropriate amount of return postage is sent along with the entry and the piece is clearly labeled that it is to be returned, with your full name and address. Those entries not returned will be distributed at no cost to area hospitals, nursing homes, schools, homeless shelters, and other places where they can brighten some person’s day.
I am a night owl…I’m just wired that way. In a perfect world, I would wake up around noon and go to bed at 4 a.m. Unfortunately, I like night-time snacking too. Lately it is an irrational love of Cheetos and chocolate…but not together, I promise…although, hmmmm. Maybe the cure to my night-time snacking is to spend my nights taking photographs instead.

As the sun sets, a whole new world of photographic opportunities presents itself. Buildings, streets and time lapse take on a different light at night. But don’t stop there…
Ever hear of “Night life”? Carnivals? Animals? People? Theater? There is a voyeuristic feel to night images, the viewer senses that they are observing life from the shadows. Urban lights create high drama – colors intensify and shadows loom. In the country, things become scary and still. Is there just a hint of the sunset left? Time lapse can create fantastic swirls of lights creating abstract compositions. Show them what your camera sees “After Dark.”
JUROR:Tom Paivais a professional, freelance photographer based in California where he has had his business for over 15 years. He specializes in large format photography of industrial and maritime settings, as well as architecture and interiors. Tom has over 70 cover images for various Trade Magazines to his credit.
His long term passion is night photography and he loves to create images of urban settings and moonlit landscapes on film. He was a co-founder of The Nocturnes, a group of night photographers who had a landmark exhibit in San Francisco in 1991. His book, Industrial Night, contains 46 color images of industrial settings at night.
He has co-lead photo workshops on night photography and view camera use over the past 10 years and has had several articles on these subjects in photographic magazines.
He was educated at the San Francisco Academy of Art, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in photography.

I am rarely more than 10 feet from my BlackBerry. I am not proud of it, but it IS a fact. I am not alone…this I know. When it comes to food, I’m not a fan of participatory requirements at restaurants. I’m not a fan of hibachi. I have no desire to have a chef flip shrimp into my mouth…call me crazy. Fondue may be my only exception to that rule. Nonetheless, I celebrate participatory arts.

When I think of neon lights, I think of New York, Vegas, Hong Kong…and fast food. Okay, that last one may just be me. But did you know that Austin, Texas–proudly weird–is one beautiful neon spectacle at night as well?

JUROR: Gallery founder and director Jann Alexander, a noted fine artist / photographer and a nationally-known art director / designer who’s been passionate about neon since she fist saw it glow, will jury the show. SUBMIT JPEGS ONLY: Up to four (4) jpegs in quantity, maximum 1000 kb each, sampled and saved as high quality (not maximum) jpegs in sRGB colorspace. If you are submitting video, please provide only a link to a website where your video is posted. You will receive payment confirmation with submission instructions after you have paid. No mail or print entries are accepted. Mailed entries cannot be returned.

The work(s) you are submitting is/are original and one-of-a-kind, created by you, the legal copyright-owner, in 2008-2010; the work(s) is/are free of copyright infringements; and you are willing to pay our $35 nonrefundable entry/handling fee for considering your work(s). If you are submitting historical work that predates this century, please contact us at info@austindetailsart.com re how to proceed.
You understand that the juror(s) may choose one, all or none of the works you submit; if chosen, you agree to provide the original(s) for hanging by the date they request in their acceptance notice, and you agree to allow Austin Details Art + Photo to publicize your work in any media and manner they deem appropriate. Of course you will retain all rights to your own original work(s) of art.
You agree that if your artwork is sold by Austin Details Art + Photo, they will deduct necessary presentation and shipping expenses and sales tax, and you will receive 60 % of the pre-tax sale price within 30 days of sale. You agree that if you sell your exhibited art within the 60-day period after the exhibit ends due to exposure by Austin Details Art + Photo, 25 % of your pre-tax sale price is due to them within 30 days of sale.
(Optional) If accepted, you may wish to allow Austin Details Art + Photo to negotiate sale price on your behalf up to a 10% reduction without requiring your permission.
You will carry your own insurance for any artworks you submit and that they accept for exhibit on their premises. Though they will take reasonable precautions to care for your work, they are not responsible for any damage or theft or loss or unforeseen circumstances while handling, exhibiting, promoting or shipping your work.
You will promptly pick up (or arrange for pre-paid return shipping) for your artwork at the exhibit’s end, within 10 days of their request, to avoid donation to Goodwill.
Sometime you only get one shot. You can’t unbake a cake or unburn toast.

Center Gallery in Wichita, Kansas seeks entries for a national exhibition that celebrates the range of creative exploration in photography, opening October 29, 2010. Each photograph will be considered based on the merit of the single image.
AWARDS:Enter and Compete to become the “Hot New Pic” and receive a $250 fellowship award.
FORMAT: Submit images in jpeg format on CD: 300 dpi, no larger than 3000 X 3000 pixels.

NYC-based arts group, the Tryst Collective, is looking for artists, photographers, sculptors, crafters, musicians, etc. who would like to be a part of a *one-night* group show – an art, music, and networking event.
Jessica Rowshandel writes, “We are still waiting for the date, but we are aiming for mid to late Sept. We are looking for local people who can get to the venue the night of the show since it’s a D-I-Y sort of thing.
“We do not take any commission. We ask that the participants invite friends/followers because we need to pay for the space through ticket sales and more importantly, we are building a community.
