DO HICKEYS

It will come as no surprise that I love kitchen gadgets.  I actually own a machine called the CoCoMotion (pictured right) that serves the solitary purpose of making hot cocoa at the perfect temperature.  Embarrassing, but true.  The top of my cabinets serves as a storage house of ridiculous serving pieces I’ll never use, old cheese boxes, and some very cool art made out of toasters.  And if it is an OLD kitchen gadget…like my egg scale, then I’m really in love.

I fell in love for this Call for Entries from The Columbus (GA) Museum called Past is Present: Contemporary Approaches to Historical Decorative Arts and Design.  Check it out…I think you’ll be surprised to find it is part classical applied art, part artisan craft and a whole lot of opportunity to look at your art from a different perspective.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: Ventura California

A Tiny peek at Lust from R.L. Gibson's Psychomachia Show!

On ArtAndArtDeadlines.com, I preach the wisdom of not getting complacent…of continuing to enter shows. However…

I have been working on my show Psychomachia (see a detail of Lust: The Three Legged Man at left) for more than a year now with Arizona artist Jerry Portelli, and I have worked on it to the exclusion of almost everything else.

So, I really need to take my own advice and decide that it is time that I at least enter a couple of shows…it is all about balance…apples AND Cheetos.

NO MORE EXCUSES.

I PROMISE.

It has ceased to be about cash prizes for me. It is all about the ability to show in new places. Here is one of the shows that I think that I will enter this June:

FEATURED ARTIST: Amy Kollar Anderson

Enter the Featured Artist Contest!I’M MELTING
melting

I love Surrealism in art. I just do. Fried eggs permanently remind me of Dali’s melting clocks.  It is embedded now.

But I digress.  Surrealism has had a significant influence on my own work, and I believe it is that same slant of Surrealism that I love in the work of Amy Kollar Anderson.  And I am pleased and proud to have painter Amy Kollar Anderson as AAAD’s latest Featured Artist!

Anderson grew up in the suburbs of Chicago. Her inspirations are gathered from the work of the Surrealists, Symbolists, Art Nouveau, and the decorative arts.

Nite Mare by Amy Kollar AndersonIntrigued by the forms, textures and colors found in nature, she collects bits of plants, rocks, bones, and feathers, then sorts them in jars in her studio. Her current series explores divergent environments inside and outside the containers, and addresses issues of environmental concern and child welfare.

She received her B.F.A. from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and her Master of Humanity with a focus in Fine Arts, from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio.

She currently lives with her husband and their four cats in Dayton, Ohio, and works as the Gallery Coordinator for the Rosewood Gallery in Kettering, Ohio.

See “Nite Mare” pictured right.  To watch a time-lapsed video of Anderson painting “Nite Mare,” click Here.

Of her process Anderson says, “I enjoy the process of creating a completely new environment in each painting, complete with new rules about interactions and colors.

Detail of "The Messenger" from Featured Artist Amy Kollar Anderson!I enhance this juxtaposition of imagery by creating what I call the ‘gypsy aesthetic’ of patterns and colors, which is inspired by my frequent trips to local thrift stores.

“The aesthetic involves a contrast of overlapping vintage and modern design elements and untraditional paint choices, such as metallic, fluorescent and interference colors.

This subtle psychedelic presentation misdirects the viewer from immediately focusing on the issues presented, therefore creating harmony and tension in the narrative.”

“The Messenger” (pictured left) is one of the images I watched in progress on Anderson’s facebook fan page.  I encourage you to reach out and get connected with Anderson on facebook, MySpace, and her website KollarAnderson.com .

Sign up for Anderson’s announcement list, find connections to her Etsy shop and more via the Contact Page on her website.

ART DEADLINES: January 2010

Click Here to Subscribe to this Blog by Email!

It has taken me quite a while to sift through the January 2010 deadlines. Apparently the word got out that artists were bored in the winter because there are shows everywhere.

Click Here for Tips on Getting an Artshow! So, why so few here at Art & Art Deadlines.com? Most of the shows struck me as simply ways for someone to take cash out of your pocket and food out of your mouth…junk food…empty calories.  Hmph.

Here are a handful of shows that I felt pretty good about.  In fact, I think I may have to submit to the “Kiss Me” – Art Inspired by Gustav Klimt from Pop Revolution Gallery in Mason, Ohio.  Which one are you entering?

Remember, like with food–all things in moderation and quality before quantity. Snack wisely.

FEATURED ARTIST: Catherine Roach

Click here to subscribe to this blog by email!

Click here to see all the work of Catherine Roach!I have a treat for you today…

the work of Catherine Roach.

I love art.  My home and office are filled to the brim with the work of artists that I love.  And, while I have a significant appreciation for the talent it takes to produce realism, I prefer not to own it.

I want the artwork I own to inspire me to dream of what can be, not what already is.  Admittedly, that is my personal choice.

I am a fan of modern Romanticism in art and artists.  I own work that leads with the heart and confronts it in a cerebral way.  I like the idea of the gifted hero following inspired creativity and knowledge to produce genuinely special work that defies norms and expectations.

The work of Catherine Roach took me by surprise.

...and that's when I knew I was a goner.

I researched every piece of her work that I could find electronically.  By the time I had viewed it all, I felt like I had an intimate experience.

Roach’s work makes me sad a little, but I find myself smiling at the wit with which it is packaged.  I am aesthetically drawn to Roach’s frenzied sense of composition and use of color and then smacked by its raw, personal commentary.

The early worm gets gotten.

When I asked about her process, it all became a little clearer. Roach says, “I begin a piece by reading over the scribbled down sea of words from that day, and placing images for these statements in my head at first, jotting down ideas as I go. I work rapidly without restraint, not holding anything back, to some extent of a free write. I use a large variety of media when creating, from pens to watercolor, and acrylic to digital. Knowing I don’t ever have a limit, creating for myself and no one else is what drives me to a finish.”

Don't you feel trapped?

Learn How to Cook!I often ask artists what their favorite food is because I’m a foodie…and I am nosey that way.  This is a food-themed art blog–loosely speaking, but I rarely publish artists’ answers.

This time, I have to expose Catherine for what she is…a goldfish eater.  The comfort of cheese all wrapped up in a glowing, albeit tiny, smiling package.  Very telling, Ms. Roach, very telling.

...move on by Featured Artist Catherine Roach!

Catherine Roach is currently attending The New England Art Institute in Boston for Graphic Design, and approaching her final semester in January. And I must admit that I am concerned that she will always keep her work to herself like her own private little treasure.  I am bothered because I want to own the work of Catherine Roach.  And, I believe that is the highest compliment any viewer can give any artist.

I was walking and talking so fast by Featured Artist Catherine Roach!

I am a fan of taking medicine with a spoonful of sugar. Catherine, thank you for the sweet surprise.  Thank you for letting me publish just a little glimpse.

I am inspired.

Celine Eimann is a Swiss-born artist who is now based in Sydney, Australia.

Illustration for Green Stone-Eater Monster by Celine EimannEimann studied fine arts in Switzerland and Visual Communication Design at Billy Blue College of Graphic Arts in Sydney.

As far as she can recall, Eimann always had a passion for painting, staining, coloring almost everything within the reach of her fingertips (which sometimes got her in trouble)!

More recently she also started writing and illustrating children stories, which will be soon available in English and in French.  And, it is the illustration (pictured to the left) that truly grabbed my attention.

Illustration for the Green Stone-Eater Monster by Celine EimannWhen I inquired further about this piece after tripping across it on Eimann’s site, I found that that there were actually an number of pieces for a children’s book that written and illustrated by Eimann called The Green Stone-Eater Monster.

While The Green Stone-Eater Monster has yet to be published, it was recently awarded first prize (in the picture book/graphic novel category) at the Chidren and Young Adult Writers and Illustrators conference in Brisbane, Australia.

Visit Celine Eimann's site to see her gallery of work!In a recent blog post, Eimann outlines her current project, “I am now working on 3 new different projects.  One of them being my second children book. And for this one I am actually stepping into the world of ‘little creatures’…

“I am researching and sketching how to make a fairy looking deliciously graceful and the forest mysteriously magical…I have a zillion images running in my head… I am trying new methods… I know it will come, it always does. Doesn’t it?”

I am excited to see what comes of Eimann’s newest projects and to buy a copy or two of The Green Stone-Eater Monster when it comes to print.  You can find Eimann all over the web.  In addition to Eimann’s web site, you can follow her on Twitter, find her on MySpace and Facebook…and don’t forget to check out her blog.  I look forward to seeing more of her work!

The National Wet Paint Artist Exhibition will be a contemporary art painting exhibition outlook and an overview of promising artists across the United States currently working in the medium of painting. Wet Paint refers to the idea that this is a fresh group of artists (MFA candidates/graduates) working in painting media.  Wet Paint will pose the following questions: How is the next generation of artists redefining one of the oldest art mediums? How are new technologies impacting their painting materials, methods, techniques, processes and ideas? How are graduate programs in America reshaping painting? What does painting mean to a new generation? Wet Paint will highlight and give a forum to a new generation of artists working from traditional to experimental painting mediums.  NO ENTRY FEE.
