Are you surprised that I haven’t mention Art Publication in a couple of weeks? Me too. I think you all know my opinion, but since we have lots of new readers lately…I’ll restate it for the record. Opportunities for having your work published in art journals and magazines can only serve to help your career. Think of it as the marshmallows on your hot chocolate!

CALL for ENTRIES: Direct Art Magazine Annual Competition

This competition is for Direct Art Magazine, Volume 18, Fall 2011 edition. The competition is for twenty publication awards. Artist winners of the competition will, at no cost to the artist, have their work appear Volume 18 of Direct Art Magazine.

ELIGIBILITY and RESTRICTIONS: The competition is open to all artists, national and international, working in all media. All forms of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, graphics, digital and installation art are eligible. Video artists may submit video only if the work can be represented in print form. Entrants must be 18 years of age or older to apply.

ENTRY FEE: There is a $35.00 entry fee for one to four artworks entered, presentation is by digital files, prints or 35mm slides. There is a $5.00 fee for each additional artwork above four. Details of 2D artwork count as an additional artwork. Sculptors may provide one additional view per artwork without cost. Artists accepted for publication will not be charged additional fees of any kind. Payments may be by check or money order in US funds, drawn on a US Bank, payable to SlowArt Productions, or by credit card using PayPal.

DEADLINE: The final postmarked deadline is March 31, 2011. Entries must be postmarked or submitted via email by this date.

NOTIFICATION: Artists will be notified of acceptance or non-acceptance no later than April 30, 2011. Results will be posted on or before this date at: http://www.slowart.com/results. Notification will be made via email and/or by mail with the return of materials in the SASE provided by the artist.

Artists who do not include the SASE because they do not want their submission materials returned must provide a self addressed stamped #10 (letter size) envelope if they wish to be notified by mail.

All artists who provide a working email address will be notified via email, if no email or return envelope is provided, artists will only be notified if accepted for publication. Type or print your email address clearly, if a mistake is made reading it you will not be notified. Read the notification page for details of the notification policy.

DIRECT ART AWARDS:

Grand Prize: Front Cover and six page feature display.
Second Prize: Back Cover and four page feature display.
Awards 3-4: Four page feature.
Awards 5-6: Double page feature display.
Awards 7-20: Single full page display.

Editors Awards: Additional pages, inside covers, mast head and outside covers may be assigned based on editorial selection.

PUBLICATION TERMS: Winning artists will be published in the fall 2011 edition of Direct Art Magazine. The magazine will be distributed by COMAG Marketing Group, the distributors of Art News and Art in America to book and magazine stores across the USA. The issue will be on display and available in stores, including Barnes and Noble and Borders Book stores, from October 2011 – January 2012.

Featured artists will also be displayed on the Direct Art web site for one year. All works published will be reproduced with permission of the artist. Artist retains all copyrights to the artwork and the image will not be reproduced or used in any other format. Direct Art will claim no percentage on any artwork sold or business generate d through the magazine.

Despite all my talk about butter, chocolate and all things yummy, we really do eat fairly healthy at my house. We limit excessive intake of fats, processed white sugar and foods with unnecessary chemical additives. I usually insist to avoid the premature expansion of my rear end and to offset a few other bad habits, ha. Organic bananas are a must. No they aren’t alway the prettiest, and yes, they spoil faster, but nothing tastes more like a banana. Here’s your chance to get back to something natural …

CALL for ENTRIES: Arte Natura

SlowArt Productions presents the group thematic exhibition, Arte Natura. This exhibition will focus on art inspired by the natural world and will be held at the Limner Gallery.

Eligible are all art forms relating to, or gaining inspiration from the world of nature. Landscapes, skyscapes, flowers, vegetables, fruits and animals are all eligible. Human images are permitted only as an elemental part of the natural environment. All artist interpretations of the natural world from the realist to the abstract and conceptual will be reviewed and considered.

ELIGIBILITY AND RESTRICTIONS: The competition is open to all artists, national and international, working in all media. All forms of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, graphics, digital and installation art, video, etc. are eligible. Entrants must be 18 years of age or older to apply. Wall mounted works must not be taller than 96″ no wider than 120″. Sculptural work must fit through a standard height, 36″wide entry door.

DEADLINE: The final postmarked deadline is February 28, 2011. Entries must be postmarked or submitted via email by this date.

I love things in small packages. For many of my friends it conjures images of little blue boxes from Tiffany’s. For me, you can just send little blue boxes of Mariebelle chocolates and keep the jewels for yourself. This next Call may inspire your own small package.

Check out this Call for Entries from Harper College for their 34th Annual National Juried Exhbition of Small Works. Small is all about perspective, but Harper College see it as no larger than 22″ at its largest dimension. That sure includes a large amount of artwork, so sieze your opportunity…

CALL for ENTRIES:
34th Annual National Juried Art Exhibition

The College’s annual national juried exhibition highlights work selected from entries by artists from across the country. The show typically features a wide array of media ranging from photography, prints, and painting to metal, clay, glass, and fiber. The Harper College Educational Foundation sponsors this exhibit.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists over 18 living in the USA are eligible.

SIZE & MEDIA: In its largest dimension, individual artwork must be no greater than 22 inches including frame if applicable. All media excluding
jewelry, film and video/digital video are eligible. Weight limitation of 45 pounds. No work that requires special installation or instructions will be accepted.

DEADLINE: Postmarked by January 24, 2011

NOTIFICATION: February 28, 2011. Notification Cards WILL NOT be sen. Please check the website for results of the jury.

ENTRY FEE: A nonrefundable fee of $25 entitles each artist to submit a maximum of three entries. Make check or money order payable to: Harper College Educational Foundation.

AWARDS: Accepted work will be considered for purchase for the Harper College Educational Foundation Art Collection. Purchases are made possible by the Harper College Educational Foundation Purchase Award.

JUROR: Lanny Silverman, Chief Curator of Exhibitions for the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, Chicago Cultural Center, will serve as the show juror. He has more than 30 years experience curating and promoting contemporary and avant-garde art forms from American and other cultures. Since 1990, he has curated over 90 exhibitions at the Chicago Cultural Center.

March – The fair maiden and the foul beast. Fair play and the cheat. We want stories of a day at the fair and odes to foul smells. Was the ball fair or foul? Tell us, who said life was fair?

April – Will you follow suit (& tie)? Will you leave it undone? Do you go in for what suits you? Or are you tied up?

In this issue they are looking beyond the clothes that make the man, and into what makes our lives simple or complicated.

May – Mother and Child. The Unicorn said, “I always thought children were fabulous monsters.” And they are. Many women build these fabulous monsters inside their bodies – it’s just so sci-fi.

One of the most elusive and powerful relationships in the human condition is the relationship we have with our mothers. Want to share yours?

OPEN CALL: Space 237

I like fast food as much as the next girl. But too much of anything can be bad for you. And just sometimes, I would rather the question be “chicken or fish?” instead of “do you want fries with that?” Open calls are a little more like table service while themed shows are a bit like going through the drive-thru–I love them both. Check out this Open Call for Artists Proposals for the upcoming season at Space 237. The entry fee is only $20 for a full year of shows, and they consider ALL media, even performance art. Don’t miss out on this opportunity!

Space 237 holds two large exhibitions annually, filling both of their gallery spaces, as well as several smaller featured exhibitions, exclusively in their first floor gallery, throughout the remainder of the year.

For their large exhibition receptions, Space 237 often feature performance artists or unique presentations for the opening evening festivities.

CALL for SUBMISSIONS: Courthouse Gallery

As we approach the new year, I start thinking about wiping the slate clean and starting with no guidelines or expectations… a fresh start if you will. Of course I am talking about my spice cabinet, but it applies to this next Call for Proposals to be a part of next year’s exhibition series, too…

CALL for PROPOSALS: The Courthouse Gallery

The Lake George Arts Project Gallery Committee invites artists to submit exhibition proposals to the Courthouse Gallery.

They seek proposals from professional artists and crafts-persons (those making a living, or endeavoring to make a living, through their artwork).

Strong preference is given to work created within the past two years. They welcome proposals for special exhibitions, installations, mixed media presentations, and performance art.

DEADLINE: January 31, 2011 (and it is January 31st of each year)

SUBMISSION FEE: There is no fee to submit a proposal.

SUBMISSIONS: In lieu of submitting 35mm slides, artists may submit 10 to 12 digital images of recent work on a CD, in accordance with the following guidelines: Image Dimensions should be approximately 4 to 6 inches, and no more than 1200 x 1200 pixels (the longest dimension of the image must be no more than 1200 pixels).

The file size for each image must be no larger than 2 MB. Submit only PC-compatible files, in jpeg format, in RGB or SRGB color mode only (No CMYK). Label each file (image) with a number and title. The first nine images must begin with a zero (for example: 01title.jpg, 02title.jpg…15title.jpg). This will ensure that they are presented chronologically and follow your Image Script.

Please do not include other material on the CD. (Send only hard copy of resume, artist’s statement, and Image Script). Please do not submit material that requires software, plug-ins, extensions or other executables to be downloaded or installed. The CD must be clearly labeled with your name.

CHECKLIST: 10 to 12 images (either slides or on CD), and as a Hardcopy, please send your Resume, Artist’s Statement, Image Script (numbered to correspond with your digital images or slides).

The Image Script must have the following information: Artist’s name, title of work/image, medium, dimensions of artwork, Date of work/activity. And don’t forget to send a #10 Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope for notification letter. If you would like your materials returned to you please send appropriately sized SASE.

Some people dance when they cook. Some FOOD dances…remember the popcorn box from the movie screens of yesterday? Me, I sing. I have to fight back the sound of my father singing Hey Good Lookin’, Whatcha got Cookin’? everytime I turn on a stove burner. But this next Call for Entry could benefit from that inspiration.

CALL for ENTRIES: Dance with Me

The Pop Revolution Gallery is excited to announce Dance with Me, a juried exhibition open to artists working in all mediums.

The theme for this exhibit is the Art of Dance. For inspiration, they divided this broader theme down into three categories: Romantic (i.e. The Butler by Jack Vettriano), Expressive (i.e. The Dance by Matisse) and Trained/Studio (i.e. dance portraits by Edgar Degas). These are just offered as assistance, so feel free to explore your own dance musings.

ELIGIBILITY: The exhibition is open to artists 18 years or older. All work must be original work. Students must not present work for consideration if assisted in any way in arrangement or execution. Artists accepted for the exhibition will be asked for an artist bio for display purposes.

DEADLINE: January 29, 2011

NOTIFICATION: February 2, 2011

ENTRY FEE: An entry fee of $25 for the first entry, $12 for each additional entry. Up to 4 pieces can be entered in to the show.

JUROR: Carol MacConnell creates diverse oil paintings in an array of vivid colors and composition. Her paintings draw the viewer though various emotions from playful and enchanting to serene and peaceful.

Carol is a native of Cincinnati, OH. She received a Bachelor of Fine Art from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and has continued her study of painting with internationally known artists, Quang Ho, Zhaoming Wu, Carolyn Anderson and C.W. Mundy. Her work has received numerous awards and is part of private and corporate collections throughout the United States and Europe.

Many folks feel the holidays are time for celebration. I think the secret to a happy life is finding cause for celebration everyday. It won’t surprise you that my family celebrates with food. One of my favorite celebratory foods is pesto…on just about anything, especially pizza. This next Call gives you reason to celebrate…women, just in time for Women’s History Month.

Check out this Call for Entries from the Tall Grass Arts Association called Half the Sky in celebration of Women’s History Month (March). The entry fee is low, and you don’t have to be a woman to enter…just celebrate them.

CALL for ENTRIES: Half the Sky

Chinese proverb: “Women hold up half the sky.” Women’s History Month grew out of a small-town school event in Sonoma County, California in 1978. In 1981, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Rep. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) co-sponsored a joint Congressional resolution proclaiming a national Women’s History Week.

In 1987, Congress expanded the celebration to a month and March was declared Women’s History Month. Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society. In 2011, Tall Grass Arts Association will host a national, juried exhibit celebrating Women’s History Month.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists ages 18+ are eligible. All media will be considered. Original work only. All work submitted must reflect the theme of the exhibit – the contributions of women to history, culture or society. All work must be for sale.

Work over 75 pounds must be hand delivered, installed and picked up by the artist or representative. Work that requires more than 1 hour to install must be installed by artist. Work may not have been exhibited previously at Tall Grass.

DEADLINE: Postmark by January 12, 2011 or hand-deliver by January 14, 2011

ENTRY FEE: There is a $35 non-refundable jury fee required, per artist. Please make checks payable to Tall Grass Arts Association.

JUROR: Sabrina Raaf is a Chicago-based artist working in experimental sculptural media and photography. Her work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions at Mejan Labs (Stockholm), Stefan Stux Gallery (NYC), Ars Electronica (Linz), Opel Villas Foundation Art Center (Rüsselsheim), Museum Tinguely (Basel), Espace Landowski (Paris), Artbots 2005 (Dublin), San Jose Museum of Art, Kunsthaus Graz, ISEA (Helsinki), Klein Art Works (Chicago), The Lab (San Francisco) and Painted Bride Center (Philadelphia).

Raaf is the recipient of a Creative Capital Grant in Emerging Fields (2002) and an Illinois Arts Council Fellowship (2005 & 2001). Reviews of her work have appeared in Art in America, Contemporary, Chicago Tribune Sunday Magazine, Leonardo, www.lab71.org, The Washington Post, and New Art Examiner. She received an MFA in Art and Technology from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1999) and is currently an Assistant Professor in the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

ABOUT THE TALL GRASS ARTS ASSOCIATION: The mission of the Tall Grass Arts Association is “to promote public education and appreciation of the arts; to encourage artists; and to support high quality art through exhibitions, sales, classes and special programs available to the public of all ages.”

To that end, Tall Grass Arts Association: operates a gallery that exhibits regional, national and international artists. Recent exhibits have
included “Worlds Imagined: the Art of Children’s Books” which featured the original illustrations of 11 children’s book illustrators, “With These Hands,” a sculpture exhibit which included 7 works by the world renown sculptor Richard Hunt, “The Sacred, the Spiritual and the Sensual” which included the works of Javier Chavera whose works hang in the permanent college of the Mexican Museum in Chicago and “Here and Now,” an exhibit of the current works of our gallery artists. continues below

ARTIST REPRESENTATION: Hudson Gallery

I have kept most of my art-related Rejection Letters over the years. And along with those letters, I have kept a US map to mark off each show with the goal being to hit every state in the continental US before I make the move to conquer the world…and all of its delicious food, of course. I’m making progress. For those of you trying to conquer the Ohio art market, this next call for gallery representation is for you.

The Hudson Gallery has an open call for Portfolio Review. Do you homework and then submit your work. No entry fee and guaranteed response regardless of the outcome. What do you have to lose?

CALL for SUBMISSIONS: The Hudson Gallery

The Hudson Gallery will review portfolios from artists seeking representation. Please take a detailed looked at their web site and/or visit the Gallery prior to sending them your materials. Always do your homework.

Once you have some understanding of their curatorial interests and feel your work is an appropriate fit, please send images using the guidelines below.

MEDIA: They are interested in all media including painting, drawing, mixed media, printmaking, sculpture, and the fine crafts.

PORTFOLIOS: They accept portfolios throughout the year, while occasionally calling for something specific. Please include a self-addressed stamped envelope for the return of your materials. They do not take appointments to review materials or view portfolios during gallery hours. They do not accept email submissions. All submissions will receive a gallery response.

SUBMISSION MATERIALS:

10 – 20 images of recent work labeled with your name, title of the piece, date of completion, medium, dimensions, and retail price.

Support materials: include a cover letter, resume, artist statement, recent articles or reviews about your work, and announcement cards from previous exhibitions.

CALL for ENTRIES: Last Chance for Solitary

Some of the most popular culinary creations in my house come from leftovers. We frequently put a whole chicken in the crock pot on Sundays, and on Mondays we usually have “Chicken Something.” Just because you’ve tried something once doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give it another try. This next post has had three lives on AAAD.

First, I published the orignal I am Solilary Call for Entries, then I published the follow up show Call for Entries at the Gift Gallery. Now I’m giving it one more stir in the Crock Pot because they have extended the deadline for another week. So, check out this Call for Entries for I Am Solitary – London that is a counterpart to the original. Join me in applying for what promises to be a phenomenal show at the Gift gallery.

I Am Solitary – London

Beers.Lambert Contemporary Art is proud to curate an exhibition for Gift Gallery, at its extraordinary location on London’s primary gallery row, Vyner Street.

I Am Solitary – London, is a counterpart and extension of the related Beers Lambert exhibition that took place in Nottingham, in September of 2010.

This collaboration with Gift Gallery seeks progressive contemporary art that responds to questions of identity and individuality.

The exhibition aims to highlight ideas and articulations relating to a conceptual and aesthetic understanding of individuality, isolation, and identity in a world typified by conflict, disillusionment, and change.

The work submitted should critically & aesthetically challenge the reception of these themes & truly push the direction of contemporary art.*

Eligibility & Media: Artists at all career stages, from all parts of the world, working in all mediums and practices are encouraged to submit.

Vyner street haslong been the benchmark of excellence in London’s contemporary art sphere; prominently located at 10 Vyner, Gift gallery continues this tradiiton of featuring emergent and progressive contemporary art.
