DON’T BE A CHICKEN

One of my favorite foods on earth is a simple poached egg.  I love farm-fresh eggs whose yolks are so orange they look unnatural.  I want ooey, gooey yolks, but the whites have got to be cooked through.  Left on top of a crisply toasted English muffin half.  They look a little daunting, but poached eggs rock.  This next Call for Submissions is a perfect chance for art publication, and the process isn’t daunting… even if you are a chicken.

Check out this Call for Submissions for The Flaneur, an Independent Art & Culture Newspaper.  There is no entry fee, so don’t pass this one by.  Last August when I posted a call from The Flaneur, at least TWO readers got published, plus yours truly.

EVERYDAY

As much as I love food, I truly despise making the decision about what to eat meal after meal.  And no one, except my 11 year old, will say what they really want to eat.  My husband always wants fish, but he couches it in “I want something lighter, healthier.”  I usually want something exotic or rich or covered in sauce, but I usually start with “why don’t we treat ourselves tonight?”  But not my kid.  What does he want for dinner?  Pizza and Swiss Cake rolls.  Every meal, everyday… just ask him.  The juror for this next Call knows what he wants too.  Take a look…

Learn more about Sequim Arts online!Check out this Call for Entries for the 2011 Juried Show from Sequim Arts.  You can enter for as little as $15, and I’ve never read another prospectus where the juror gave such a clear explanation of what he is seeking through description of his own work.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: 2011 Sequim Arts Juried Show

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all adult artists. All work must be original in interpretation and composition, not copied from copyright or published art or executed in a supervised class.

Cab E Net by Juror Mike McCollumJUROR:  Mike McCollum was born in Hoquiam, Washington but acquired many of his artistic sensibilities from the San Francisco Bay Area. “While at UC Berkeley I apprenticed with Peter Voulkos assisting him with 3 major outdoor sculptures.”

“Abstract expressionism is one of my primary influences and I am enamored with the idea of ‘arriving at’ rather than ‘aiming at.’   I want to surprise myself. My job as an artist is to make decisions–what to leave in and what to take out. I see art as a process of reduction–getting rid of the chaff and striving for the essence of the idea. In my career I have worked in many mediums — bronze, ceramics, drawing, painting, printmaking and wood. I start with a basic idea and then it’s a matter of rescuing that idea from all the contrived directions it may take me.”

ABOUT SEQUIM ARTS:  Sequim Arts is a non-profit arts organization located on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state, with Mount Olympus to the south and Victoria, British Columbia across the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the north.  Sequim Arts was established in 1969.  Many of their artists are nationally recognized and all members benefit from their local community’s appreciation and support.

I typically only post once per day.  Any more smacks of double-dipping of your time and inbox space.  I get notified everytime someone unsubscribes from this blog, and I am sincerely sorry when I found out that an artist has decided that AAAD isn’t something they want or need or have time for.  So, I am self-conscious about double-dipping… except in ice cream, of course.

So why double-dip today?  Well, I am also self-conscious about straying too far from bringing you the art deadlines and opportunities that are the whole purpose of this blog.  Last Monday I posted a housekeeping blog, earlier this morning I posted the Artist of the Year blog, and tommorrow I unveil the first Featured Artist of 2011.  That is three non-deadline posts in 8 days.  I just have to break it up with a little opportunity!

Check out this Art Contest from tailcast.com, a print-on-demand greeting card site, that allows you to design and sell a Valentine’s day card online.  There is no entry fee, and you could win $300+ and 20% commission on card sales.  Take a look!

Do you really only get them when you’re cold or can a secret whisper in your ear bring them on too? Is there such thing as a sexy chuckle, a secret grin or a flirty giggle?

Can you make them
happen with a card?

This is the challenge for you at tailcast. This time tailcast want designs to give butterflies or goose bumps and make recipients chuckle, giggle and grin knowingly on Valentine’s day.

HOW TO ENTER:  Design a card (using all 4 sides of the card).  Upload your design using the full instructions found on their Call for Art pages.

It Gets Better

I don’t understand hate.  There is no food reference today because I cannot find a way to incorporate humor into this issue.

Please take advantage of the Call for Entries from the 13 Forest Gallery to take a stand against hate and help let someone out there know that It Gets Better.  The deadline is January 19th, but you can email entries…so don’t delay.

CALL for ENTRIES: It Gets Better/Make It Better

Social change starts with the individual. One gay teenager jumps off a bridge and thousands are motivated to share their coming-out stories.

One person can also serve as a positive symbol to effect social change. A woman keeps her seat on the bus and a social revolution is born.

By working to better the world, you actually make things better for yourself. Studies of collective action have shown that when people identify with a particular cause, and work towards social change, the change often occurs within—people feel legitimized.  Empowerment is not necessarily even reliant on the movement’s success: victory occurs in the very struggle of self-expression and self-empowerment.
