CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: 6×6 in New York

Happy March! Thank you for your patience during my short hiatus. I am back and will return to regular posting during the next 2 weeks.

In the meantime, I received this call today and thought it was a perfect opportunity for those of you ust starting to build a resume–The 3rd Annual 6x6x2010 is a brilliant fundraiser in benefit of the Rochester Contemporary Art Center.

The rules are pretty simple:

You send up to 10 pieces of work sized 6″ x 6″ x no more than 1/4″ deep signed only on the back, and they will be exhibited at the Rochester Contemporary Art Center and sold at $20 each.

No hanging hardware necessary–they use push pins.

Why participate?

1. It is an “all hung” show so you won’t receive a rejection letter.

2. You can add a NY Show to your resume.

3. You get a chance to support the arts while possibly picking up a collector or two.

Here is the call, in brief, with a link to the prospectus at bottom:

6x6x2010 is the third exhibition of thousands of original artworks, made and donated by celebrities, international and local artists, designers, college students, youths and YOU. Each artwork will be 6×6 inches square and signed only on the back, to be exhibited anonymously.

All artworks will be for sale to the public for $20 each, to benefit Rochester Contemporary Art Center. Artists’ names will be revealed to the buyer only upon purchase and all artworks will remain on display for the duration of the exhibition. Don’t miss Rochester’s largest exhibition and don’t miss the chance to show your artwork in great company and support of Rochester’s downtown contemporary art venue.

All submissions are due by May 2 at 5 pm and should be delivered or mailed directly to Rochester Contemporary Art Center. A full list of artists and an online gallery of all contributed artworks will be made available for viewing and purchasing online.

ARTIST OPPORTUNITY: Norwegian Competition

Sometimes I get to a post via a bizarre and random thought process, but that process can often be just the recipe for a great post.

Today, I was thinking about food–shocking, I know.

I was wondering what to have for dinner and thought salmon sounded good. Salmon makes me think of Norway. Norway sparked the memory of having seen a Call or Announcement or Email of some sort with Norway in the subject line.

And so I rummaged through the files until voila…I think salmon…you get a Competition for the Stavanger Region’s New Concert Hall (in Norway). Enjoy! And don’t forget to drop me a line if you decide to participate in the competition…looks like a great opportunity for a large scale installation!

Solo artists and collaborating groups are invited to take part in this international pre-qualifying round for a lighting project in the New Concert Hall in Stavanger, to be completed in 2012. Please note the postmark deadline is March 6, 2010.

Stavanger New Concert Hall will be of a high international standard, and be centrally situated, close to other cultural institutions and two new music schools in the Bjergsted Park area of the city.

The building is specially designed for musical events, but will also accommodate many other kinds of event for large and small audiences both in the two performance halls inside, and immediately outside in the large amphitheatre.

Through this pre-qualification, the Art Committee is seeking candidates to take part in a limited competition for a significant indoor art project, where light is an important premise. The defined space is in the center of the building; in section, starting on the ground floor outside the Multipurpose Hall, it opens up, traversing five floors.

This part of the Concert Hall has large glass facades on two sides and a selection of materials that contribute to erasing the division between exterior and interior spaces. This openness is important: the art work will be visible from far away and therefore represent the Hall, as well as being a significant element in the whole entrance area and amphitheatre.

Inside, the art project should be a distinctive feature and contribute favourably to the visitor’s impression upon entering this large public space. It is here that the public will best experience the interior dimensions of the Concert Hall.

It is also where audiences will congregate as they progress up and down the stairs. A work of art for this location must have a distinctive character and it must function regardless of the prevailing circumstances, including in daytime or in difficult light conditions.

The pre-qualification presentation should be a maximum of ten A4 pages (on paper, not e-mailed or on CD). The submission should include a presentation of art projects, a CV and practice and relevant experience. The Art Committee also wants to see, in brief, motivation for entering the competition and reason for interest in the project.

No ideas or sketches for this project are wanted at this stage.

ART FELLOWSHIP: Bernheim Arboretum

I have a friend who has been searching for art fellowships and residencies and a way to spur on her progress in a current series and develop a taste for what adventure to next tackle. While searching for those opportunities for her, I keep stumbling across a plethora of fascinating art opportunities.

Do you want to live amongst trees and commune with nature? Boy, do I have the perfect recipe for you…

The Bernheim Arboretum Outdoor Art Fellowship. This fellowship is only offered every other year, and 2010 is a fellowship year. But, the deadline approaches…February 28th.

The Bernheim is a beautiful 14,000-acre property located 25 miles south of Louisville. It encompasses a nationally recognized arboretum and 14,000 acres of natural area protecting diverse plant and animal species. Over fifty miles of hiking trails, outdoor exhibits and other facilities offer abundant recreational and inspirational opportunities, which attracts thousands of visitors each year.

JURYING PROCEDURE

The jurors will select the award recipient based on the quality of the work submitted. Support materials will be considered, but only as a secondary resource. The goal in all of Bernheim’s activities is to help realize its mission of strengthening the bond between people and nature by finding new ways to connect nature with people’s everyday lives.

The Bernheim folks believe that if people recognize and benefit from the many values found in nature, quality of life will be improved, thus they will be motivated to protect the natural world for both its practical and its intrinsic value. To that end, the Bernheim Indoor Art Fellowship is given semi-annually to a talented artist who will work within the Forest and/or Arboretum to create works that are inspired by and installed in the natural world.

The Fellowship provides the artist an opportunity to advance his or her own skills and career while enhancing awareness of Bernheim’s goals regionally, nationally and internationally.

The Fellow recipient is required to live at Bernheim for up to three months while working on his/her project. Bernheim will provide comfortable housing in a beautiful wooded setting, plus a financial grant of up to $2,500.00 to cover travel, and other expenses. Material may be provided or funded depending on the proposed projects. The recipient of the Bernheim Indoor Art Fellowship may be required to donate pieces produced during the Fellowship to Bernheim for its permanent use. These works will become part of the Bernheim Art Collection.

Fellowship recipients will also be asked to interact with the public in some way, which may include participating in workshops and/or lectures. Bernheim will reach an agreement regarding the work to be donated and the interaction required from each artist.

ENTRY PROCEDURE

Visual artists (sculptors, installation artists, environmental artists, etc.) who would like to be considered for this fellowship should send a resume, 10 slides, a slide list, project proposal and an artist’s statement. All slides must be labeled with information that corresponds to the slide list. Each slide must be labeled with the artist’s name, title, medium, size, date, and a red dot to indicate the lower left-hand corner or the work.

The artist’s name should not appear in the work samples. Failure to follow these guidelines will result in the rejection of the application. They now accept submissions in digital format on CD, DVD, or video, however, the name should not appear on the works submitted for consideration.

No original works, or email submissions with attached works will be accepted. The Bernheim will not be responsible for safety of your digital files during shipping, and due to the large volume of submissions, will not be able to return your digital submissions. If you would like your slides returned, please include a self-addressed envelope with proper postage for return.

Submit all materials by certified mail, Federal Express, or UPS Next Day Air, all of which will provide a return receipt.

ART RESIDENCY: The Wassaic Project

The holidays are over, and the new year has begun. Some of you are feeling trapped by the confines of your studios due to the weather. I have an idea for those of you that just need to get out of the proverbial kitchen. How about a 4 month residency to recharge your artistic batteries?

Fellowships are available for the full cost of The Wassaic Project, so here is the information, hope it helps get you out of the kitchen…

THE WASSAIC PROJECT ARTIST RESIDENCY
2010 Summer Season
Residency Dates: May 1st – August 31st, 2010

The Wassaic Project Residency Program has been created to cultivate and support community for emerging and professional contemporary artists. Housed in a historic re-purposed livestock auction barn, the Residency Program offers eight artists the opportunity to live and work in the heart of a rural community and offers three local artists studio space.

The Wassaic Project seeks a group of artists working in a diverse range of media who want to produce, explore, challenge, and expand on their current art making practices, while participating in a grass roots, community-based arts organization. In the final month of the residency, artists will either complete an installation or contribute work to be included in The Wassaic Project Summer Festival 2010.

STUDIOS + FACILITIES
Artists will receive an adaptable raw studio space in the historic livestock barn. All studios are roughly 300 square feet. Artists will have 24 hour access to their studio and accommodations which include a private bedroom, shared living room / study, dining room, kitchen, and bath.

Artists also have access to workshop facilities as well as the potential for expansion of workshop space. The residency’s workshop facilities will include a modest wood shop, a large format inkjet print room, and a silkscreen studio. We are working to build other workshop facilities and are open to hearing artist’s suggestions.

PROGRAMMING
Participating artists will work intensively to develop, explore, and expand on their practice, meet new peers, and have the opportunity to participate in all of 2010 Summer Programming.

Artists are required to participate in a monthly evening of conversation which will consist of artist’s talks, films, performances, and presentations in the cattle auction ring, followed by a themed round-counter dinner discussion in the luncheonette. These evenings will coincide with open-studios (also required) as well as optional artist-supported community workshops.

APPLICATION

DATES AND DETAILS
Artists must submit their digital application by February 1st, 2010 11:59pm.

The residency includes a studio, accommodation, access to workshop facilities, and all of The Wassaic Project 2010 events. In the final month of the residency, artists will either complete an installation or contribute work to be included in The Wassaic Project Summer Festival 2010. The residency fee is a flat rate of $800 per month per resident.

Local artists who do not need living accommodations are encouraged to apply for studio-only residencies. The fee for a studio-only residency is $400 per month.

Fellowships are available and will be awarded based on demonstrated need as well as the strength of the proposal. Fellowship amounts range from $100/month to full cost.

To apply for a fellowship check the “apply for fellowship” box, and provide a short statement detailing your financial need. Artists receiving fellowships will be expected to donate between 3 – 10 hours of their time per week working for The Wassaic Project, depending on the amount of their fellowship.

Collaborative teams (willing to share a bedroom and studio) may share the cost of enrollment, however, must pay an additional impact fee of $100 per month. Residents are welcome to bring partners to The Wassaic Project Residency but must also pay the additional monthly impact fee. Pets are negotiable and will require an additional fee.

They are open to proposals for one to three month residencies, but we will give priority to four month applicants. Please include your month preferences in your application statement.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
Artists must submit their digital application by February 1st, 2010 11:59pm.

Click on “Apply” link at the bottom of the Project Page. You will be directed to a digital form where you will attach your CV, up to 10 slides, personal info, and type of residency. There is a $15 application fee and the paypal confirmation number is required to complete the application.

All applications will be reviewed by The Wassaic Project directors and artists will be selected on the basis of quality of work, commitment to their practice, and ability to interact positively with the community at large.

If you are applying for a one to three month residencies, please include a note about this and your month preferences in your application statement.

Notification of Acceptance: March 1st, 2010. Accepted applicants will have two weeks to commit to attending the residency. Upon confirmation, payment is required of a $200 deposit and the first month’s fee. Starting on June 1st, the current month’s fee is due on the first of each month, till completion of the residency.

Written cancellation more than 30 days before May 1st will result in return of 50% of deposit. There are no refunds after start date of residency.

STOLEN ART: Get over it!

Have you ever had a piece of artwork stolen? Me too…more than once. Within the past two weeks, “Sally,” part of a triptych called “Sue . Sally . Sara .” was stolen off a gallery wall.

I received both a phone message and an email from the Director of the organization and the Director of the gallery–frought with professionalism and concern. My response? “Stuff happens,” and “Hey, I take it as a compliment…I’m theft-worthy.”

For me, the theft poses questions like…“What was wrong with the other pieces in the triptych”…not “How could this happen.”

As a gallery owner and then director for many years, please take my advice on this one. Do not have a hysterical fit that reinforces the idea that all artists are crazy and irrational.

Yes, I understand that you may be attached to the artwork. “Sally” is a part of my masthead at RLGibson.com, but you’ve got to let it go. Galleries and their owners and directors do the best they can; do me a favor, and give them a break. Most of them are insured.

ART DEADLINE: January 2009 Preview

Those of you who know me as either an artist or a curator/gallery director know how much I love a theme. I’ve done themes around everything from Underwear and Mad Science to the Seven Holy Virtues and Tire Tread. Well, I’ve found a theme to love: Geometric Abstraction.

Here’s a show that has it all: a great theme–geometry, a reasonable entry fee ($25), online entry, PayPal payment, an online exhibit, sales with a miniscule commission rate (20%), and the opportunity for a show in 2011. You can’t ask for more. It is like a zero calorie cheesecake…all you could ever want. As a result, I am doing something I rarely do. Here is the prospectus is the show prospectus in its entirety:

Still Point Art Gallery invites submissions from emerging and established artists for its upcoming exhibition: Geometric Abstraction.

“Geometry – squares, triangles, circles, ellipses, cones, cubes, and polygons … length, area, and volume. Geometry frames our world and shapes our world. It brings order, organization, balance, symmetry, and asymmetry to our surroundings. Geometry is used by carpenters and astronomers as well as theoretical mathematicians. The concept of geometry is so simple and appealing that even young children seem to intuitively draw squares and circles and rectangles. Yet the concept of geometry is so complex that mathematicians and physicists may spend years studying applications and theories of one tiny aspect of geometry.

“Then there is the artist. When an artist’s unique view .. of the world, of the self … incorporates geometric shapes or focuses on natural or man-made geometric shapes, the result may be an amazing display of shape and color. Geometric abstraction can be daring, imposing, powerful, stark, complex, bold, or rhythmic.”

After closing as the featured exhibition on April 6, 2010, Geometric Abstraction will remain online through April 6, 2011.

Open to artists 18 years of age or older living in the United States who submit original artwork in any medium except video and wearable art.

Artists may choose one of three ways to submit images: (1) you may upload images using their online form; (2) you may send images by email; or (3) you may send images on a CD. Slides and prints will not be accepted. Whatever way you choose, images should be saved in jpg format and resized to 72 dpi, less than 1.5 MB, with the maximum dimension of the image being no more (and preferably not much less) than 1000 pixels. Failing to resize your image will result in problems with uploading. The file name of your image should follow this convention – last name, title of work (perhaps abbreviated), and number (matching entry form number) [for example, SMITH_SUNNYDAY_3.jpg]. Do not include stray characters such as # or * in your file name. Doing so will prevent your file from uploading properly. If you choose to email images, please send them to director@stillpointartgallery.com. If you choose to send your images on a CD, please mail to Still Point Art Gallery, 193 Hillside Road, Brunswick, Maine 04011. CDs will not be returned. Once the submission deadline has passed, no image substitutions may be made.

Please Note: If you use Safari on a Mac platform, their online form will NOT work to upload your images. If you use a Mac, please either use Firefox to upload your images or email your images.

Entry Application and Fee

Artists are asked to complete an entry form and submit a non-refundable fee of $25 for up to 3 images. Additional images may be submitted for a fee of $5 each, up to a maximum of 8 images at $50. ($25 for 3 images plus $25 for an additional 5 images to reach the maximum of 8 images at $50) If you complete the entry form and submit your images online, payment may be made online by PayPal or credit card immediately following submission of images. If you submit images by email, you should include the following information about each image in the message: title, medium, dimensions, framed/unframed, and price. Please also include your name, address, and home or cell number. Payment may be made by requesting a PayPal invoice or by check or money order. If you submit images on CD, please include the entry form. Again, payment may be made by requesting a PayPal invoice or by check or money order. Write checks payable to Still Point Art Gallery and mail to 193 Hillside Road, Brunswick ME 04011. Once the submission deadline has passed, no changes in prices as stated on the entry form will be made.

Selection and Awards

Final selections for the exhibition will be made by the Gallery Director, Christine Brooks Cote. Three Artists of Distinction will be chosen who will be invited to show their art as Gallery Artists in 2011.

Sales

Generally, all work submitted must be for sale. (If the artist does not wish to sell certain pieces submitted, the Gallery Director should be notified by email.) By signing the entry form, the artist grants the Gallery the right to sell the work(s) of art. The Gallery will devote its best efforts to the sale of all art. A sales commission of 20% will be retained by Still Point Art Gallery on all sales. Work will be sold for the price indicated on the entry form. Work must remain available for sale and must remain online in the Gallery for the entire duration of the exhibition; no early withdrawals will be permitted.

By submitting work to be considered for the exhibition, artists grant Still Point Art Gallery the right to use their image(s) for the purpose of marketing.

SHOW: Creative Adaptation Kreft Juried Exhibition – Call for Entries

EXHIBIT TYPE: Gallery Exhibit — Concordia University Ann Arbor

DEADLINE: December 4, 2009.

MEDIA: Prints, drawings, paintings, photographs, digital images, sculpture, etc. are eligible.

DESCRIPTION: Concordia University Ann Arbor seeks submission of visual arts that incorporate the various meanings and potential approaches to the idea of creative adaptation or modification of earlier forms, methods, or works. The artwork submitted should be rooted in a “useable past” while addressing a new condition, a new technology, or a new era either formally or thematically. Recipients of awards will be determined by the juror, Rebecca Hart, associate curator and acting Head of Contemporary Art for the Detroit Institute of Arts, and announced at the opening reception. The artist chosen as “Best of Show” will receive a solo exhibit in the Kreft Gallery at Concordia University Ann Arbor in the 2010-2011 season. Only original artwork produced within the past five years will be accepted-reproductions are not permitted. Entrants must be 18 years of age or older to apply. $25 entry fee for up to 2 submissions.

SHOW: National Wet Paint Exhibition

EXHIBIT TYPE: Online Exhibit — Zhou B. Art Center, Chicago

DEADLINE: December 6, 2009.

MEDIA: Artists currently enrolled in a MFA program in an American college or university or artists who received an MFA degree within the last two years. All works must be or incorporate paint as their main medium for this painting exhibition. We welcome non-traditional interpretations of what painting is, how its done, and how it is exhibited or displayed. All submitted works will be considered for this artist exhibition. Original work only. No works previously exhibited at the Zhou B Art Center will be accepted. The curator reserves the right to accept or reject any work for inclusion into this exhibition.

DESCRIPTION: 2010 marks the first decade of the 21st Century. Under the watchful eye of a technology driven society, online social networking and cyber-interaction communities, a group of young artists have been evolving and redefining one of the oldest mediums of art. The National Wet Paint Artist Exhibition will be a contemporary art painting exhibition outlook and an overview of promising artists across the United States currently working in the medium of painting. Wet Paint refers to the idea that this is a fresh group of artists (MFA candidates/graduates) working in painting media. Wet Paint will pose the following questions: How is the next generation of artists redefining one of the oldest art mediums? How are new technologies impacting their painting materials, methods, techniques, processes and ideas? How are graduate programs in America reshaping painting? What does painting mean to a new generation? Wet Paint will highlight and give a forum to a new generation of artists working from traditional to experimental painting mediums. NO ENTRY FEE.

ART FUNDING: $2000 Grant

By now, you know how I feel about the idea of a starving artist…afterall, I did put it in the site’s subtitle. So anything I can do to make sure you guys don’t starve is high on my list. And just for submitting, you’ll get an exhibition and book publication out of it. The submission fee is only $25 to participate, and because the work has to fit inside an 8″ x 10″ x 2″ space for 2D work and a 6″ cube for 3D work, even shipping will be cheap. What a peach, eh?

The Starving Artist Project has created a grant that an artist can use to continue making a body of work. Using the fees from each submission, they will award one artist with a $2,000 grant. Welcome to ArtAndArtDeadlines.com ! Here are the deadlines for December 1 – 30 of 2009. December deadlines are typically slow for galleries, but online exhibits and contests abound.

Several of these shows have deadlines coming up the very first week of December, and because many are online or digital entries you save money (for comfort food) this winter. There are inexpensive shows that could be a great resume builders…so no excuses!

SHOW: Call to Artists: UF 313 Veterinary Education and Clinical Research Center — University of Florida

EXHIBIT TYPE: Permanent State Collection

DESCRIPTION: The University of Florida in Gainesville, FL is pleased to announce a call to artists for Florida’s Art in State Buildings Program. Art budget: $95,000. An honorarium of $1,500 will be awarded to up to three finalists to make a site visit and create a site specific proposal. Artists must have met at least two (2) of the following criteria: the artist has completed public commissions similar in budget to the proposed project; the artist’s works are included in major public, private, corporate or museum collections; the artist has received awards, grants or fellowships; the artist has had a one-person exhibition in a museum within the past five years. SHOW: “Projekt30‘s January 2010 Exhibition”

EXHIBIT TYPE: Online Exhibit

DEADLINE: December 1, 2009.

DESCRIPTION: This online exhibition will be publicly juried at Projekt30.com, December 15-29, 2009. The exhibition will include thirty artists; invitations will be sent to over 30,000 galleries, collectors, and fellow artists. Visitors have the option of contacting any participating artist with feedback or opportunities. As of October 2009 over 284,000 messages have been sent to participating artists. All artwork submitted will be presented online prior to the exhibition so visitors may help select which artists will be included. SHOW: Creative Adaptation Kreft Juried Exhibition – Call for Entries

EXHIBIT TYPE: Gallery Exhibit — Concordia University Ann Arbor

DEADLINE: December 4, 2009.

MEDIA: Prints, drawings, paintings, photographs, digital images, sculpture, etc. are eligible.

DESCRIPTION: Concordia University Ann Arbor seeks submission of visual arts that incorporate the various meanings and potential approaches to the idea of creative adaptation or modification of earlier forms, methods, or works. The artwork submitted should be rooted in a “useable past” while addressing a new condition, a new technology, or a new era either formally or thematically. Recipients of awards will be determined by the juror, Rebecca Hart, associate curator and acting Head of Contemporary Art for the Detroit Institute of Arts, and announced at the opening reception. The artist chosen as “Best of Show” will receive a solo exhibit in the Kreft Gallery at Concordia University Ann Arbor in the 2010-2011 season. Only original artwork produced within the past five years will be accepted-reproductions are not permitted. Entrants must be 18 years of age or older to apply. $25 entry fee for up to 2 submissions.

SHOW: National Wet Paint Exhibition

EXHIBIT TYPE: Online Exhibit — Zhou B. Art Center, Chicago

DEADLINE: December 6, 2009.

MEDIA: Artists currently enrolled in a MFA program in an American college or university or artists who received an MFA degree within the last two years. All works must be or incorporate paint as their main medium for this painting exhibition. We welcome non-traditional interpretations of what painting is, how its done, and how it is exhibited or displayed. All submitted works will be considered for this artist exhibition. Original work only. No works previously exhibited at the Zhou B Art Center will be accepted. The curator reserves the right to accept or reject any work for inclusion into this exhibition.

DESCRIPTION: 2010 marks the first decade of the 21st Century. Under the watchful eye of a technology driven society, online social networking and cyber-interaction communities, a group of young artists have been evolving and redefining one of the oldest mediums of art. The National Wet Paint Artist Exhibition will be a contemporary art painting exhibition outlook and an overview of promising artists across the United States currently working in the medium of painting. Wet Paint refers to the idea that this is a fresh group of artists (MFA candidates/graduates) working in painting media. Wet Paint will pose the following questions: How is the next generation of artists redefining one of the oldest art mediums? How are new technologies impacting their painting materials, methods, techniques, processes and ideas? How are graduate programs in America reshaping painting?
