Nest is an all-media juried exhibition sponsored by The Torpedo Factory Art Center that examines the nest as a symbol for home and refuge. Artists are asked to respond to the theme of nests and how they view this symbol, literally or conceptually.

ENTRY FEE: A non-refundable fee of $35.00 must accompany each entry form, and a $10.00 fee for each additional art work submitted. JUROR: The juror for this exhibition is Gretchen Schermerhorn, Artistic Director for the Pyramid Atlantic Arts Center in Silver Spring, Maryland. Thematically, her work often explores the relationships between humans, science, politics and psychology. Her works have been exhibited nationally and internationally in such places as Northern Ireland, New York, Boston and Washington DC. Her work is in public and permanent collections including the Janet Turner Print Collection and Amity Art Foundation.

SALES: A commission of 40% will be taken on all works sold as a result of this exhibition. Payment will be mailed to the artist within 30 days of the exhibition closing.

I’m a dog person. I love cats and used to own one until my son became allergic, but make no mistake…I’m a dog person. And, my dogs are foodies. You shouldn’t be surprised, ha. My mutts are are just big loveable pups, and I simply can’t resist the longing stares that beg for grapes…white grapes, specifically. They camp out while I cook looking for broccoli stalks, summer squash ends and the occasional raw potato piece. This next Call gives you an opportunity to help the four-legged kind of the feline assortment.

The Alley Cat Art Show is for all artists who are cat lovers, and who would like a new opportunity to exhibit while helping cats and kittens across the United States.

This show is to benefit Alley Cat Allies — a national organization dedicated to helping stray and feral cats with veterinary care, shelter and humane treatment. They are also honoring the memory of tireless cat caretaker and animal advocate Susan Michelle Kortyna, who passed away suddenly in October, 2010.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to artists 18 years of age or older who submit artwork in any medium except video. Submissions must be the creation of the artist. Reproductions of original artwork, such as glicee prints of original paintings, will not be accepted. Please note that approximately 75 pieces will be chosen for gallery exhibition, with a remaining 125 in the on-line exhibition.

ENTRY FEES: Artists are asked to complete an entry form and submit a non-refundable fee of $25 for up to 3 images. The Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, CO announces a call to photographers world wide, both amateur and professional, for a photography exhibition to be held March 25 – April 23, 2011.

Being human is complicated.

Human + Being is an equally complex equation, the sum of these parts a richly textured experience unique to the individual but shared universally. Triumphant, tragic, absurd and the quiet significance in between, our stories unfold without cease. Explore the emotions and actions that define being human.

ELIGIBILITY: The exhibition is open to all photographers world wide, both amateur and professional. The Center invites photographers working in all mediums, styles and schools of thought to participate in its exhibitions.

JUROR: For over twenty five years Phil Borges has lived with and documented indigenous and tribal cultures around the world. Through his work, he strives to create a heightened understanding of the issues faced by people in the developing world. Phil has hosted three television documentaries for Discovery and National Geographic as a part of a series that investigates indigenous cultures that still maintain a spiritual dialogue with the natural world.

Phil’s photographs are collected and exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide. His award-winning books have been published in four languages and in 1998 he was presented the Photo Media Magazine “Photoperson of the Year” award. In December, 2003 Phil was honored with the Humanitarian Award, receiving the Lucie at the 1st Annual International Photography Awards.

In 2005 he was named a Giraffe Hero for his humanitarian work. Phil teaches and lectures internationally and is co-founder of Blue Earth Alliance, a 501(c)3 that sponsors photographic projects focusing on endangered cultures and threatened environments.

I spend a lot of time having this conversation with my husband Jon: “What do you want for dinner?” to which he responds, “I don’t know. What do you want for dinner?” I rarely know the real answer and often end up settling for whatever is easiest because it is already defrosted. However, every once in a while, I know exactly what I want (Sunday it was mushroom soup), and often I want only that. No side dishes, no amuse bouche. Just mushroom soup. This next Call lets you choose just soup…or the whole meal.

Check out this Call for Entries from SICA (The Shore Institute of the Contemporary Arts) for ≤196. Simple concept: your work has to be equal to or smaller than 196 square inches, i.e. 14″x14″ or smaller (if square) or 14″x14″x14″ or smaller (if cubed). Any media that will fit into those guidelines will work, and you can enter just one piece for as little as $15. Mushroom soup for one please…

ELIGIBILITY: Works that have been completed in the past 5 years and that has never been displayed at SICA. Each artist may enter as many ORIGINAL pieces for consideration as they wish. MEDIA & SIZE: The exhibition is open to all visual artists in all mediums. 2-dimensional work can be no larger than 196 square inches (excluding the frame) and must be “show ready” – totally ready for hanging. 3-dimensional works must be less than 2,744 cubic inches and must not weigh more than 100 lbs . I always remember the thing I needed from the grocery store about 10 minutes after I leave the grocery store. I used to put Post-it® notes everywhere. That didn’t work. I tried pre-printing lists with check-off boxes. That didn’t work. Now I send myself a text message with the essentials and an alarm for the time I plan on going to the grocery store. Sad, but true. Consider this your official text message for The Arrangement.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: The Arrangement

The tradition of still-life as subject matter has roots deep into the history of art, pre-dating photography as a medium by centuries.

Fine artists in all mediums, photography included, benefited from the total control they had over the final piece; the art making began with their arrangements of the mostly inanimate objects they intended to represent. As Vermont Photo Space Gallery owner Ken Signorello aptly points out, “…it is art squared, where one first creates a work of art and then another to preserve it.”

The history of still life in Photography is as old as the medium itself. Henry Talbot himself produced the first photographic images using the inanimate objects of still life. In its earliest days, utilizing still life as subject matter allowed for the lengthy exposures necessary for its initial technologies.

In the early 1900s, studies in line and form of object contributed to popular abstractions. In the 1950s, still-life concentrated on the kitsch, and re-emerged in the 90s after a few decades in obscurity, in perfect partnership with the new trendy super-saturated film stock. Overall, the genre has been largely ignored, despite periodic bouts of influence – surprising, for a photographic practice with so much potential.

What is still life today?

Vermont Photo Space wants you to show them your arrangements, from advertising to record photography, the abstract to the obvious. Whether you are an amateur or professional, you may have experienced your still-life photographs as some of your favorite images – Juror Paula Tognarelli wants to see them.

JUROR: Paula Tognarelli is the Executive Director and Curator of the Griffin Museum of Photography. The Griffin Museum of Photography’s mission is to promote an appreciation of photographic art and a broader understanding of its visual, emotional and social impact.

Tognarelli holds a M.S. in Arts Administration from Boston University; is a graduate of the New England School of Photography (Applied Program) and is a current candidate for her Masters in Education at Lesley University as a visual arts teacher.

Paula describes her photography as her native language. “I’ve always been more visual than vocal. I could draw a picture much faster than I could articulate a story in words. Photography made dialogue that much easier for me.”

Tognarelli is also a digital imaging specialist. She has done extensive postgraduate study in color management, color theory, digital photography and digital imaging processing. She has lectured on digital imaging throughout the United States and in Japan, representing Agfa and Polaroid Graphic Imaging. She has also been a speaker at the Seybold Conferences. She is a former member of the Xerox Technical Advisory Board. Paula was named by Printing Impressions magazine as one of twelve women who made a major contribution to the Graphic Arts/ Imaging industry.

RULES FOR PHOTO SUBMISSIONS:

Age: Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If younger, a parent or legal guardian may make the submission for you.

Ownership: All submitted photos must have been taken by the photographer making the entry.

Digital Submissions: All submissions must be made by digital files through:

3. Images should be as large as possible but no larger than 1280 pixels on the longest side, type jpg – set to the highest quality. DPI can be set to any number, but if you must specify something go with 72 dpi.

I am frequently asked how and when the food obsession started. I can’t pinpoint when in my Banquet-fried-chicken-sackful-of-Krystals childhood that I fell in love with food, but if I had to venture a guess, I would say 1983. I was on vacation with family in Florida, and my father decided that it would be his treat to take us all to the restaurant at the Kapok Tree Inn in Clearwater, FL.

We were so overwhelmed by the wonderful, albeit obnoxiously decadent decor, my father refused menus and suggested the chef choose on our behalf. Much to our surprise, instead of grand courses of unpronounceable French food, out came fried chicken and green beens. It was that moment that I realized that my humble little fried chicken eating self could make every meal an adventure. This next call offers you an opportunity to be the chef…select a whole array of choices for the juror in photo essay format.

Fashioning Photography

Where do art and fashion meet? That’s the gray area they are looking to showcase for “Fashioning Photography.” Since the 1990’s, the two have benefited from constant cross-fertilization. As a population, we are taking fashion photography very seriously as a result.

Is it the droves of visitors that appear in museums and galleries with the Fashion Photography exhibit?

Is it the income available to Photographers who bend a little into the commercial realm?

Is it our fascination for lifestyle imaging that has created the booming magazine culture and therefore elevated the fashion spread to be endlessly alluring to the artist?

There is so much diversity and energy in contemporary fashion photography that artists everywhere are turning to it as a subject matter; it’s an obsession and a compulsion.

Fashion is fickle.

It changes its values constantly and the variety of fashion photograph is proof. Though “safe” images are preferred by most advertisers for magazine spots, there are no holds barred for the gallery setting. Whether it’s for music videos, lookbooks, catalogues, advertising and catwalk photography, or the personal portfolio, fashion photography is everywhere.

The styles are seemingly infinite, ever-evolving, and constantly reinventing themselves: staged tableaux (Steven Meisel), diarist approaches (Mario Sorrenti, Corinne Day), cinematic (Venetia Scott), critical and political (Nick Knight), high gloss and glamour (Karl Lagerfeld), iconographical (Craig McDean), shock (Clayton Cubitt), sexual (Steven Klein), psychological (Camille Vivier), surreal (Bela Borsodi), spectacle (Ellen Rogers), realism (Lina Scheynius) and the banal (Jonathan de Villiers).

What is your style?

JUROR: Bobby Mozumder, is both a Photographer, and Editor-in-Chief at FutureClaw Magazine, currently in its third year. A Rochester Institute of Technology graduate, Mozumder now lives and works in Washington D.C.

His fashion photography ranges from high-end glamour to diaristic. Whether high-end studio or location, Mozumder’s images incorporate exquisite lighting, intimate camera angles, dynamic framing, graphic overlays, and an approach to color that ranges from monochromatic to high-key black and white.

Across the gamut, his imagery is consistently calculated. Is it the influence of a background in computer architecture and engineering? Personal work aside, Vermont Photo Space is lucky to have his experience as Editor-in-Chief of FutureClaw Magazine extended to the jurying of “Fashioning Photography.” Mozumder is entrenched in the art, culture, and fashion of our time, engaging himself in Fashion Photography’s latest trends as he builds the FutureClaw brand as one of today’s most beautiful boutique magazines.

Of special note: Vermont Photo Space is able to accept essays for this exhibition! So much of the genre appears as multi-page spreads, and they are thrilled to offer the opportunity to their exhibitors to submit the same.

CALL for SUBMISSIONS: All Hung Art Blizzard

As I sit and compose this post today, I have been watching it snow for hours. All day yesterday and today it has been the Tennessee equivalent of a blizzard. I am warmed by the idea that chili awaits me for dinner along with a snowman cupcake for dessert. This next call involves an entirely different kind of blizzard.

Check out this Call for Submissions to the Art Blizzard, an all-hung show whose proceeds go to support the art galleries at State University of New York (SUNY). If you need a resume builder, here’s an all hung show in New York. In addition to adding to your resume, you get to support the arts and get a little online publicity to boot. Take a look!

CALL for Submissions: Art Blizzard

Art Blizzard is a non-juried show inviting participants nationally and internationally to donate five 5 x 5 inch works on paper in support of the Galleries. The title of the exhibit envisions a blizzard of artwork in lieu of snow. All donated artwork will remain on sale at the online Marketplace. The art will be installed in the Bertha V.B. Lederer Gallery and posted in the Art Blizzard online gallery. Donations of $20 can made on site or online and the donor shall receive a work of their choice.

ELIGIBILITY: The exhibition is open to all working artists. Entries must be original works of art.

SUBMISSIONS: Submit jpeg digital images of 5 works that 5” x 5” to Art Blizzard link on the llbgalleries.geneseo.edu website. Each image must be uploaded in two sizes: 80×80 and 250×250. And image quality 300 ppi. If you do not complete this stage your artwork will not appear in the Art Blizzard online gallery.

Each image file should be labeled as: lastname-firstname1.jpeg (providing numbers 1 -5 for each image submitted). Email digital submissions to: llbgalleries@geneseo.edu

GUIDELINES: All entries must be UNFRAMED. Size specifications: 5” x 5”. Maximum number of submissions is 5. 2-Dimensional work is preferred. 3-Dimensional work is accepted but must be light weight and able to be mounted on a wall with pins.

All artwork will be mounted on a wall with pins. All signatures must appear on the BACK of the artwork. Submission forms must be completed online along with digital images of artwork.

DONATION in lieu of ENTRY FEE: The artwork submitted to Art Blizzard will be available to the public for a donation of $20. All proceeds will benefit the exhibition program of LLB Galleries.

ABOUT THE GALLERIES: The Bertha V.B. Lederer Gallery in William A. Brodie Hall and the Lockhart Gallery on Main Street present both contemporary and historic rotating exhibitions, including works by local, regional and national artists, and by faculty and student artists.

The Bridge Gallery, a unique space bridging two wings of Brodie Hall, exhibits student work. Geneseo’s tradition of interweaving liberal and professional education began in 1867, when the state legislature passed an act authorizing the location of a “normal” (or teacher training) school.

In 1871, Geneseo welcomed its first students to the Wadsworth Normal and Training School, offering instruction to would-be teachers. CALL for ENTRIES: Postive/Negative Juried Show

I am regularly told that I am nauseating optimistic. Oh well. The only negative I like to see are the chocolate side of a black and white cookie. So sue me. This next call should give you ample reason to contemplate both sides of the artistic issue …or both sides of the cookie.

CALL for ENTRIES: The 26th Annual Positive/Negative National Juried Art Exhibition*

The Slocumb Galleries at East Tennessee State University under the Department of Art & Design is pleased to announce the Call for Entries for the 26th Annual Positive Negative National Juried Art Exhibition. In its 26th year, the Positive Negative annual juried art exhibit has consistently provided an avenue for the promotion & appreciation of contemporary art in the region. Established in 1985, it has provided the academic and surrounding local communities diverse perspectives in art.

ELIGIBILITY: The 26th Annual Positive/Negative National Juried Art Exhibition is open to all artists 18 years and older residing in the United States. All work must be original and completed within the last two years. Work previously submitted to the Positive/Negative or exhibited at the Slocumb Galleries may not be submitted. Current students and employees of East Tennessee State University are not eligible to apply.

MEDIA AND SIZE: All 2D, 3D and video art are eligible. Due to space and logistical considerations, installation and performance art are not eligible for submission. Work will not be judged in media categories. Work using materials hazardous to the health and safety of the public will not be accepted. Work should not exceed 5 feet in any direction and preferably weigh under 20 lbs. All 2D work must be ready for hanging with appropriate hardware and hanging instructions. All 3D work must have stable base and installation instructions, please indicate front of work on the photo. Suspended work from the ceiling or with elaborate installation is discouraged.

NOTIFICATION: January 31, 2011

ENTRY FEE: A non-refundable fee of $30.00 is required. Artists may submit up to three entries; additional $5.00 per entry in excess of 3. Checks payable to: Positive/Negative 26

JUROR: Sammie Nicely graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in 1975 and makes art that reflects the ceremonies of African Diaspora, working in clay, mixed media and photography and using culturally diverse techniques to create glazes and textures in his ceramic pieces.

Believing that art serves as a common ground for communication and an opportunity for each person to bring his/her own identity into play, Nicely has taught at public and private schools throughout the southeastern United States and the Caribbean and has been exhibited and collected nationally and internationally.

His work has been included in the publications “Regional Black Arts Directory” (1983), “Southern Highland Handicraft Guild” (1992), “Visions of My People: Sixty Years of African American Art in Tennessee” (1997), “Contemporary Ceramics 1999: The Work of African American Ceramic Artists” (1999), “Self-Taught, Outsider, and Folk Art: A Guide to American Artists, Locations and Resources” (2000), and “Diversity in Unity: Contemporary African American Ceramics” (2004). His artworks are in the collections of AT&T, Tennessee Valley Authority, Carroll Reece Museum, and the African American Museum in Wilberforce, Ohio.

CHOPS AGAIN?

Can you imagine liking something enough to do it 13 times in a row? I have an unnatural, and probably unhealthy, addiction to lamb, but I couldn’t have it 13 times in a row. The folks producing this next call for entries, clearly love your artwork more than I love lamb chops, because this is their 13th Annual Call.

Check out this Call for Entries from the Baker Arts Center for their 13th Annual Juried Exhibit. The entry fee is a low $25 and cash awards abound. Don’t miss this opportunity!

CALL for ENTRIES:
13th Annual Juried Exhibit

ELIGIBILITY: This Exhibition is open to artists 18 years and older who are residents of the USA or Puerto Rico. Entries must be available for exhibition at the Center April 16-June 4, 2011.

MEDIA: Original 2 & 3-dimensional works including drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, ceramics, wood, paper, enamels, glass, metalsmithing, collage, and mixed media, completed since January 2009 and not previously shown in this exhibit are acceptable. Textiles, crafts, video, kit work, and reproductions are not accepted.

ENTRY FEE: A non-refundable entry fee of $25 for the first 3 slides/images & $10 for each additional slide or image. 5 slides/images maximum. Make checks payable to Baker Arts Center. Visa & Mastercard are also accepted. Include number and expiration date on entry form.

JUROR: Laurence Bradshaw, Professor of Art & Art History at the University of Nebraska, Omaha. He received his MFA from Ohio University. He is the Founder and Executive Director of Upstream People Gallery. His has exhibited extensively nationally and internationally and served as juror for numerous national and international exhibits.

This time of year is often accompanied by the primal urge to do something for others. I wish we could find that recipe to cook up on a more regular basis, don’t you? Check out the cookies from Red Riding Hood Edibles. Most of the women in my family have been affected by cancer in one form or the other. This next Call gives me an opportunity to cook up a little something to give back.

Check out this Call for Entries for the Poster Contest to support the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. There is no entry fee, and if your design is chosen, your poster will be plastered all over NYC. Plus, you’ll know that you helped just a little in the Race for the Cure for breast cancer. CALL for Entries: Run Breast Cancer out of Town

One in every eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime, which means that whether it’s a mother, daughter, sister, wife, colleague, or neighbor, chances are you will know someone who’s had to battle the disease.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the global leader in the fight against breast cancer, working to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. The Greater New York City Affiliate is #1 in fundraising and grants given out of the entire Komen network of 125 Affiliates worldwide.

Now you have a chance to make a difference. Using your skills, you can join the fight to Run Breast Cancer Out of Town by submitting a concept for the 2011 Susan G. Komen New York City Race for the Cure campaign.

It’s simple.

Just follow the guidelines & your artwork could be seen all over New York City as part of next year’s Race campaign.

MEDIA: Create an amazingly eye-catching piece of artwork incorporating the words, “RUN BREAST CANCER OUT OF TOWN.”

Include New York City in your artwork. The city itself is one of the things that sets this Race apart, and they like to show it off. It doesn’t have to be the skyline, but be sure the art lets everyone know that they’re in the Big Apple.

Create an original piece of artwork that can be adapted to various proportions and sizes. Sometimes we may need something as small as a postcard and other times we may be on the Jumbotron at Macy’s. Think flexibility when designing your artwork.

COLOR: Pink is THE color. It is the universal color for breast cancer and should be a part of the color scheme. BUT, feel free to mix in other colors. The pinks used in their logo are Pantone 227 and 232.

FORMAT: Illustrator is the preferred application because vector art is the easiest to manipulate, but if you need to create your art using a different program or the old-fashioned way, by hand, then make sure that you create something that can be adapted to both vertical and horizontal formats (mainly vertical) and it must be at least 600 dpi at 8.5” x 11”.

Remember that they are going to need to add logos and some copy. Please include your name, address, telephone number and email address with your emailed entry.

DEADLINE: December 31, 2010. Please email your submission to vcalhoun@komennyc.org. Low resolution is best for emailing. If your artwork is selected they will require the high resolution version at that point.

RIGHTS: Contest participants are required to assign their interests in the artwork to the Greater New York City Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure as a condition to participation. Download the Assignment of Rights Form Please note that you must include an executed assignment form with your submission. Download the assignment form. A PDF or fax (212-560-9598) is fine.

PRIZES: $500 cash award, a copy of the final printed poster, your profile on the Komen Greater NYC website, and two free registrations in the Komen New York City Race for the Cure®
