Even my animals have very specific food likes and dislikes. One of my pups, Pepper, a 7 year old Lab/German Shepard mix loves crunchy veggies. She will beg for carrots, broccoli stalks and potatoes like she is dying of starvation. White grapes are the ultimate treat. This exhibit is aimed to be a celebration of the many definitions of family; how the societal constructs defining family are ever evolving and changing. You know that old saying, “You can choose your friends, but you can’t choose your family.” They are looking to choose your unchosen!

JUROR: Chris Verene has been photographing three generations of his family, since 1984, in Galesburg, Illinois, a small town in the Midwest. Verene has been called a natural storyteller, focusing on the whole intimate truth of human narratives.

Last year Verene’s work was exhibited at The Tate Modern, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and The Walker Art Center. His new photography book, “Family,” will accompany a traveling solo exhibition throughout the United States in from 2010-2013. Verene lives and works in New York City, and is currently working on stills and a feature documentary motion picture entitled, “The Self-Esteem Salon.”

AWARDS: All selected entries are exhibited in the Darkroom Gallery and included in a full color exhibit catalog. Juror’s Choice receives a 30×48″ vinyl exhibit banner featuring their image. People’s Choice gains free entry into a future exhibit.

SALES: Darkroom offers free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of their exhibitions, subject to standard sizes. All entries are anonymous, the judges are only seeing an entry number, not a name. Judges don’t care at what point you are in your career—having a recognizable style is no guarantee your work will be accepted. The idea is king, an example of great work is paramount they’re looking for the one that makes you go, “I wish I had done that.”

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all art directors, editors, designers and illustrators in all countries for commissioned and unpublished work produced in 2012.

If your work is selected there will be an additional flat publication fee of $55—whether it’s a single or series winner.

The Biennial Project is pleased to announce an open call to artists worldwide for THE ART VENICE BIENNALE 2013 – an online juried competition and digital presentation.

ENTRY FEE: Artists must submit a $25 non-refundable entry fee for up to 6 entries. Entry fee must be paid by check, money order, or credit card. The entry fee, must be accompanied by a CD with two images of EACH artwork (please provide an overall shot and a detail shot (if needed) and artist bio/resume – all burned onto the CD. In addition, a fully completed ENTRY form must be included. There is a returned check fee of $25.

JUROR: Treasured will be juried by a 1-2 member panel. Artists will be selected based on skill, technique, and originality. Submissions should be cohesive and reflect a discernible creative sensibility.

Up to 6 works by each artist will be included in the exhibit. If all six works sell, artist will be invited to submit 6 works approved by the Curator of Exhibitions.

AWARDS: Annmarie will present cash awards to outstanding work as follows: 1st place $150, 2nd place $100, 3rd place $75. Merit and honorable mention ribbons will also be presented. Jury will review installed works (not application images) for award selection.

SALES: All work is for sale; price must not exceed $450. Sales will be processed through the Annmarie Gift Shop, which will retain a 35% commission. Upon purchase, works will be removed from the gallery. Commission checks will be cut and sent within 45 days of purchase.

In 1998 he and his wife moved to New York City, where he received an M.F.A. at the School of Visual Arts. In 2002 he returned to Spokane, where he currently teaches art at Spokane Falls Community College and Whitworth University. He has curated exhibitions at Kolva-Sullivan Gallery in Spokane, the N.W. Museum of Arts & Culture and at Spokane Falls Community College.

Skubinna’s art has been exhibited in Spokane, Seattle, New York City and Portland, Oregon. He currently exhibits at Spokane’s Lorinda Knight Gallery and the Francine Seders Gallery. Skubinna is a member of Saranac Art Projects.

Susan Sills was born and raised in Chicago and moved to the Boston area in 1973. After receiving a Masters in Architecture from Harvard, Sills began her career as an architect and designer. In the early 1990’s she returned to painting and combined her innovative spirit with her training and experience. This led to an endlessly evocative body of multimedia work. Her artistic vision exists “somewhere between the safe, structured environment of the world around us and the chaos of the textures within us all”.
