The work can be understood as a kind of visual poetry. Every work contains narrative elements. Not really complete stories, with a beginning, a storyline, and an end. Miserable failure is the only path to culinary success. It is true. There are no short cuts. You have to try and try again, analyzing results and altering methods along the way. The first few dozen times I soft boiled an egg, made a hollandaise or cheese sauce, the results were less than desirable, but I am grateful for my desire to learn how. I didn’t turn out to be a chef but it increased my perspective. The same holds true for this Call. This media might not be in your skill set, and it may never be your first choice. I struggle with the debate over the cost of healthy food vs. fast food. I struggle with the idea that there are food snobs out there that believe that “healthy food is expensive” is an excuse, instead of a reason. Healthy food IS expensive. Cauliflower, a relatively unsexy vegetable, is currently $6 a head at the grocery. Six dollars. That is insane. Asparagus, sure, but cauliflower? Really. And cost aside, there really are places in this country where access to fresh food is limited by availability, transportation & a lack of knowledge or ability to prepare it if it were accessible. So, instead of clever memes, can we just take a moment to talk about a culture that ignores hunger because it “doesn’t affect me”? Do you have to have something to say about the culture outside your window? This Call is the perfect opportunity to let your work speak…

JUROR: Peter Turnley is renown for his photography of the realities of the human condition. His photographs have been featured on the cover of Newsweek 43 times and are published frequently in the world’s most prestigious publications. He has worked in over 90 countries and has witnessed most major stories of international geo-political and historic significance in the last thirty years. His photographs draw attention to the plight of those who suffer great hardships or injustice. He also affirms with his vision the many aspects of life that are beautiful, poetic, just, and inspirational.

A graduate of the University of Michigan, the Sorbonne of Paris, and the Institut d’Etudes Politiques of Paris, Turnley has received Honorary Doctorate degrees from the New School of Social Research in New York and St. Francis College of Indiana. He received a Nieman Fellowship from Harvard for the academic year 2000-2001.

Peter Turnley also teaches photography workshops on street photography and the photo-essay in Paris, Cuba, New York, Mumbai, Venice, Sicily & Lisbon. He presently lives in both New York & Paris, and has previously published six books of his work.

She is currently working on a narrative portrait series entitled “Constructed Fairytales”. Hampton’s award-winning work has been exhibited in galleries, museums and art festivals worldwide, and is held in many private collections, including those of Jock Sturges, Kim & Gina Weston, and the Center for Fine Art Photography. Her images have been published in books and on dust jackets, on album covers, and in newspapers, magazines, and popular blogs. Hampton is represented by the Duncan Miller Gallery.

AWARDS: Winner receives review by curator plus online exhibition (front page of site for a month, then archived). Winner also receives Q&A making a substantial PR piece for the photographer. A percentage of artist fees will go Hampton’s charity: Children’s Institute, Inc. There is a 2nd place winner & 3 honorable mentions which will show their bio and images archived on the site.

Minimalism has so many faces. Some would have you believe it to be stark and cold and gray. I find it comforting. I disagree that minimalism must always be bare. Even intricate design can be simple and clean and appreciable for their design. Today’s Artist of the Day, Laird Bindrim, shows such beautiful restraint. Such beauty in simply waiting for the unfolding.

“Photography as a medium is immediate. The “taking” of a photograph is measured in fractions of a second. An art form, that has the unique ability to show us a singular moment. In this image, the person talking on the phone, my good friend, is calling home to his mother to let her know he’s arrived safely. Albeit, three thousand miles away from her. Food challenges abound: Meatless Monday, Veggie Thursday & others. I full believe in $5 Friday. It doesn’t have to be Friday, but, well, alliteration. I like the creativity required to feed my family of three for $5. My “go to” used to be chicken quarters (75¢/lb), but chicken that cheap can be scary. But, I can serve the best of eggs as protein, grass-fed, free-range, antibiotic free FRESH eggs and still have plenty of cash left over to round out the meal. Holiday meals at our house are inevitably eaten around a floral centerpiece, or more commonly, a potted plant. But, for love of our dogs, there hasn’t been a poinsettia in our home for a couple of decades. Instead, we keep a Christmas cactus or two year round. The only rule of thumb is to treat them badly. My mother didn’t water hers for a year, left it on the front porch during multiple early cold snaps. She pulled it in & watered it mid-October, and it was gorgeous just in time for Thanksgiving. So, as a rule, don’t eat your floral holiday centerpieces, but a Christmas cactus might protect your pets if they get the munchies.
