ART SUCCESS: All the Answers

WHAT I KNOW

Happy Birthday to this blog! That’s right folks, I published the very first AAAD blog post one year ago today. And, I am at a loss for what to say.

I don’t know how to mark this anniversary…this birthday. I suppose could use this post to thank all the people that have become true assets to me personally as an artist and blog editor, but you don’t wanna read that?

What I really want to say is…

I have all the answers to success in the art world.
The perfect show is…
The perfect gallery is…
The perfect art deadline is…
The recipe for success is…

But, the truth is… I don’t know anymore about that than when I started a year ago. All of you that read this blog have taught me an enormous amount, and what I’ve learned has changed the face of this blog. For example:

I no longer provide long lists of show opportunities. One show a day with rare exception. You don’t like reading long lists, and I don’t like writing them. The more thorough, personal approach to each show is what sets AAAD apart, I think.

My readers don’t leave comments. I don’t take it personally that I get so few comments because you email me personally. I LOVE that you feel comfortable enough to drop me a line instead of leaving a comment. I have only had a few complaints over the past year including one reader who ever so gently reprimanded me for being less thorough than usual in one of my posts. Thanks for keeping me on my game.

Alot of my readers are foodies. I can’t tell you how many $2 Art Contest entries I get that with the subject line “I’m a Peach.” I LOVE that you really read this blog. Featured Artists are usually sent a quiz that has a few questions about food, and inevitable they are a fan of both chocolate AND junk food. LOVE it.

Just a note: The most recently chosen Featured Artist will be published in a few days, and those answers were riotously funny.

Gallery Directors are real people. I, of course, have always known this tidbit having been a gallery director; however, I have learned through their personal interaction with me via phone and email that Gallery Directors still have a PASSION for art.

Artists view gallery directors and jurors as the gatekeepers sometimes, but most of the Gallery Directors I know want to show more art than they can find the space or money to promote.

Success stories are real. I get regular reports from some of you about the shows that you entered and were juried into successfully. Yeah! Thank you for working hard and producing the work that is getting you into shows. You’ve also kept me updated on the less than successful entries…which has been enlightening…because there are patterns.

I want to close this blog with a little entertainment and motivation. There are artists and galleries and blogs that inspire me everyday. Here is a tiny handful:

Walking Off the Big Apple by Teri Tynes. I do not live in NYC, but reading Teri’s daily escapades reminds me that life is for the living and that it won’t come to you…you have to go explore.

Images by Catherine Roach. She is a Featured Artist on this site, and I find her work eternally optimistic, funny and occasionally a little dark and twisted. She is always eager and full of life, and sometimes I really need that.

Toni’s Treehouse by Toni Turbeville Morton. This blog is a quirky combination of eco-friendly living and recipes with mommy stories thrown in. This blog reminds me that life ISN’T really all about art, and sometimes I need that reminder.

Ogle’s Broom Shop and The Cliff Dweller’s Gallery. I live in Gatlinburg, TN which is home of the largest group of independent artisans in North America. And my work does not always fit into their mold, but they have welcomed me with an open heart.

ART PUBLICATION: Artist Portfolio Magazine

ENCHILADA

Missed my art publication rants? You know you did. Well, I have a new one for you. All media coverage of your art, even the bad stuff, is good stuff. I have a big show of my own coming up in April 2011 in Phoenix, and at least one of the pieces is VERY controversial. I contemplated, if only for a moment, lighting a fire under some very conservative folks known for their highly sensitive moral sensibilities…just for the bad press…but I didn’t…I haven’t…yet. Hehehe.

The point is…Artist Portfolio Magazine is about to produce its inaugural issue, and they are looking for cover art. I know, I know–stop rolling your eyes. Just let me just get the whole thing out there. Artist Portfolio Magazine is a DIGITAL magazine and is the love-child of MyArtContest.com. There–that’s the whole enchilada. I’m just saying…all press is good press. Life is too short to be jaded. You’ll KICK yourself later if you missed out on a chance for the first bite of the whole enchilada.

CALL for ENTRIES: Artist Portfolio Magazine Cover Contest

The first issue of Artist Portfolio Magazine is just about full, and now they need a great piece of art for the cover.

ENTRY FEE: $30 – up to two images per entry (non-refundable) via secure payment with Credit Card through PayPal.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists of all ages. Art work must be original and created by the artist submitting the art. Art must have been created with in the past 3 years.

DEADLINE: December 1, 2010.

MEDIA: All mediums and styles of visual artists – painting, drawings, photography, digital, sculpture, etc … Sorry, but no music or video productions.

FORMAT: Submissions must be in the following format types: (jpg,jpeg,gif) and be less than 2MB. If a background is viewable, they reserve the right to crop the image so only art is visable.

TERMS: You may enter as many times as you like. All art is placed on website for duration of contest, but it may take a few days to get the art posted online. They add and review all art manually.

CALL for ENTRIES: National Juried Art Show

I CANNOT TELL A LIE

I love National and International juried art shows. As much as I love a theme, I also love the sort of County Fair idea of the best and the brightest that the art world has to offer all lined up for the viewer regardless of media, content or technique. I’m not suggesting a low-brow affair or a pie-eating contest. I simply applaud the optimism is takes to put on a show expecting the spectacular arrival of little (and big) gems from parts unknown.

Check out the 14th Annual National Juried Art Show from Gallery West in Alexandria, Virginia–just a stone’s throw from Washington, DC. Here’s a great chance to pay a reasonable entry fee, for your work to be reviewed by a well-respected juror to possibly be shown in a great gallery. It is a perfect combination.

CALL for ENTRIES: 14th Annual National Juried Art Show

Gallery West, Ltd., is pleased to announce its 14th Annual National Juried Fine Arts Competition for 2011. Just across the Potomac River from Washington, D. C., Gallery West is a fine arts gallery located in the heart of Old Town, Alexandria, Virginia.

At their location on King Street, Gallery West is surrounded by high-end boutiques, art galleries, antique shops, fine restaurants and hotels. Gallery West, founded in 1979, is owned and operated by Washington area artists of all media.

REQUIREMENTS: Open to all local or national artists 18+ years. Original fine art in any medium is acceptable. No videos or reproductions. Original 2-D/3D only. Works on paper 24” or larger in the long dimension must be framed behind plexiglas. Clip mounts will not be accepted. Works on canvas may be wrapped around stretchers if painting extends along the sides. Stretchers must be at least 1” deep. Work that is wet will not be accepted. Maximum framed size not to exceed 30” x 40” or 72ui. All two-dimensional works must be ready for hanging with hooks and wire.

ENTRY METHOD: Entry Fee is $35 for up to three works. Additional works, $10 each. Jurying will be from digital images. CD’s must be labeled with artist’s name (last name first), titles, and medium. Digital images should be 72ppi, RGB jpeg format with maximum 600 pixels in any one dimension. File names should be artist’s last name followed by title. Example: JonesBlueSquares. Acceptance of any digital entry is contingent on seeing the real object.

DEADLINE: Received by November 12, 2010.

JUROR: F. Lennox Campello is one of the Mid Atlantic’s best known arts personalities. Educated in art at the University of Washington School of Art, Campello is an award-winning artist, a widely published freelance art critic, and a curator with more than one hundred curated exhibitions under his belt.

A radio and TV personality, he is often heard on NPR, the Voice of America and MHZ TV’s “ArtsMedia News” discussing art issues as a former and charter Associate Dealer for Sothebys.com and one of the internet’s seminal visual arts bloggers. His Daily Campello Art News is one of the web’s earliest and most popular art blogs with nearly a million visitors a year. Campello is also the co-founder of the Fraser Galleries of Washington, DC and Bethesda, Maryland, which he co-owned for ten years until 2006. His work was recently selected by well-known art collector Mera Rubell for the “Cream” auction at the Katzen Art Museum.

CALL for ENTRIES: Couplings

In February 2011 Gallery 110 will host an international juried show titled Couplings. As a tie-in to Valentine’s Day, the gallery is calling for artwork that explores personal relationships.

In our world of many dualities and increasing isolation the idea of “couplings” has many modern interpretations of love and affection. Gallery 110 invites artists to submit works that celebrate these pairings and the power of the bonds they create.

JUROR: Rock Hushka is Director of Curatorial Administration and Curator of Contemporary and Northwest Art at Tacoma Art Museum. He also serves as an Affiliate Assistant Professor at the University of Washington. Before joining the Tacoma Art Museum, Hushka held positions on the curatorial staff at the Seattle Art Museum and worked in the collections of the Henry Art Gallery at University of Washington.

At Tacoma Art Museum (pictured right), Hushka has curated more than 45 projects including Sparkle Then Fade, The Forty Part Motet by Janet Cardiff, A Reworking of Spem in Alium 1573, by Thomas Tallis, and the nationally touring Lewis and Clark Territory: Contemporary Artists Revisit Place, Race, and Memory. He has completed eleven major exhibition and catalogue projects including The Romantic Vision of Michael Brophy, Where Sky Meets Earth: The Luminous Landscapes of Victoria Adams, and two Northwest Biennials.

Under his leadership of the artistic program, Tacoma Art Museum has received major grants from the National Endowment for the Arts for a collection handbook of the Northwest collection and from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts for the forthcoming exhibition Art, AIDS, America.

AWARDS: First and second prize winners will take home $300 and $200 respectively.

ELIGIBILTY: Couplings is an international juried show open to artists over 18 years of age. Art work may be in any two or three dimensional media and must be original works of art by the artist submitting the entry.

CONDITIONS AND RULES: Entries accepted for exhibition must have a professional appearance. Two-dimensional artwork must include a wire and must be ready to hang. Works on paper must be framed and protected under glass or Plexiglas. The finished size cannot be more than 48” in either dimension and image size cannot be less than 8” in either dimension. Artwork cannot weigh more than 30 pounds. Artists may not substitute another work for the accepted work. Entries must be for sale and priced with the intent to sell. A gallery commission of 50% will be deducted from sales. Artists grant permission to Gallery 110 to reproduce accepted artwork for promotional uses in both printed and electronic forms.

ENTRY FEE: The fee is $35 for 3 entries. Add $10 for each additional piece. Payment must be in US dollars. Entry fees are non-refundable.

DEADLINE: Entry deadline is November 1, 2010.

NOTIFICATIONS: A list of accepted artists will be posted on their gallery website in early December 2010. Selected artists will be notified by email and telephone. Shipping and delivery instructions will be provided with acceptance notification. Delivery and return charges are the artist’s responsibility.

However, there are a significant number of galleries and curators that devote a portion of their exhibit space and time solely to Emerging Artists.

Check out this great Call for Entries brought to you by SlowArt Productions. Emerging Artists’ work will be showcased at the Limner Gallery in Hudson, NY. The entry fee is reasonable and prizes include both cash and publication awards! Don’t delay…

CALL for ENTRIES:
EMERGING ARTISTS 2011

This is the 19th annual competition for gallery exhibition and awards. This exhibition is devoted to the discovery, introduction and promotion of emerging artists. The exhibition will be held in April 2011 at the Limner Gallery and is open to all artists working in any media. There will be a $1000 cash award and $2400 in publication awards. Deadline for submissions is November 30.

ELIGIBILITY AND RESTRICTIONS: The competition is open to all artists, national and international, working in all media. All forms of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, graphics, digital and installation art, video, etc. are eligible. Entrants must be 18 years of age or older to apply. Wall mounted works must not be taller than 96″ no wider than 120″. Sculptural work must fit through a standard height, 36″wide entry door.

EXHIBITION AND AWARDS: Winning artists will be featured in a group exhibition at the Limner Gallery, April 1 – 30, 2011. The exhibition will also be displayed on the Limner Gallery web site. There will be a $1000 cash prize awarded to one artist. One artist will be awarded a two page display in Direct Art Volume #18, Fall 2011 issue. Two artists will be awarded a single page display. EXHIBITION TERMS:

ENTRY FEES: There is a $35.00 entry fee for one to four artworks entered, presentation is by digital files, prints or 35mm slides. There is a $5.00 fee for each additional artwork above four. Details of 2D artwork count as an additional artwork. Sculptors may provide one additional view per artwork without cost. Artists accepted to exhibit will not be charged additional fees of any kind. Payments may be by check or money order payable to SlowArt Productions, or by credit card using PayPal.

NOTIFICATION: Artists will be notified of acceptance or non-acceptance no later than December 31, 2010. Results will be posted on or before this date at: http://www.slowart.com/results. Notification will be made via email and/or by mail with the return of materials in the SASE provided by the artist. Read the notification page for details of the notification policy.

PRIVACY POLICY: Artist contact information (address, telephone) is only held for the purpose of contacting selected artists and is not preserved in any database. Entry forms are destroyed and data and image files deleted on the completion of the jury process. All artist emails are added to their future events announcement email list. If you do not wish to be on the email list click the unsubscribe button when you receive the first announcement and your email will be automatically deleted.

DEADLINE: The final postmarked deadline is November 30, 2010. Entries must be postmarked or submitted via email by this date.

All works in the show must be for sale. The gallery will take a 30 % commission on all sales. Sale price is determined by the artist.

Online Entry: On line entries are via email or web post with direct html link . Email files must be in JPG format. JPG files when closed should be approx. 500K (1/2 MB) or less in size, when open approx. 8MB or less. Images may also be posted to a dedicated web page and a link provided to the page. CALL for ENTRIES: Lucky 13 Small Works Competition

QUIT SPILLING STUFF, ALREADY!

Are you superstitious? I never have been, but I must admit that Friday the 13th always gives me pause. And I never can remember the superstition about spilled salt. And why isn’t spilled milk a superstition. Confused yet? Me too.

CALL for ENTRIES:
National Small Works Exhibition & Competition

Eligibility: Open to all artists residing in the United States, 18 years or older. Wall hung art only. No utilitarian crafts or jewelry. Maximum size, including frame is 13 inches by 13 inches by 5 inches deep. All artwork must be for sale.

DEADLINE: POSTMARKED NO LATER THAN OCTOBER 4, 2010

Entry Procedure: Entries will be juried into the competition from slides or photos, one slide/photo per artwork piece. Label your slide or photo on the backside with name of artist, title of work, medium, size (including frame). Artist must include a non-refundable entry fee of $13 per piece to be juried, and a maximum of 4 works per artist.

Make check/money order payable to VVAA (Virgin Valley Artists Association). Include a self-addressed stamped envelope with correct postage for return of slides or photos with juror decision. Accepted Work: The artist is responsible for all shipping costs to and from the Art Gallery. Work will be received from October 15 through October 23, 2010. All work must be suitably framed and presented with a wire hanger, no saw tooth hangers accepted.

All artwork on paper and photographs must be glazed with plexi glass. No substitutes of work will be allowed. Any work deviating significantly from the original slides or photos may be rejected. Artwork must be labeled on back of each piece with name, title, medium and price.

Every care will be taken for art and materials, however, the gallery and staff will not be liable for any damage or loss of artwork, frame, glazing, slides, or photos during the shipment, jury, exhibition or return of the artwork. Artists will be responsible for their own insurance.

Submission of an entry to the competition constitutes acceptance of all conditions. Hand-delivered work must be picked up at the gallery on January 6 through January 10, 2010, during business hours of the gallery.

Sales: All work must be for sale. The gallery will retain a 30% commission on all sales. The price on the entry form will be considered the retail price. A 1099 MISC will be issued if an artist receives paid commission exceeding $600.

Judges: This year’s judges are from the tri-state area of Nevada, Utah and Arizona.

CALL for PROPOSALS: The Soap Factory

MONEY FOR DESSERT

Most professional artists rely on art sales for income. Most emerging artists hope for art sales for extra income for supplies. Many prestigious art shows come with publicity and great printed materials, but lots of artists never get to go to out-of-town openings due to financial constraints. So, how do you afford to produce work, submit work, get to attend the openings and still afford to eat dessert?

Maybe this Call for Submissions from The Soap Factory could be the answer to your art entry problems. The Soap factory is looking for work for group exhibits, AND they offer installation support, travel, accommodations, and a stipend to those selected to exhibit.

CALL for SUBMISSIONS: The Soap Factory

The Soap Factory exhibits work in its galleries throughout the year. Exhibitions curated from submissions are typically comprised of 8-10 artists. The Soap Factory is a 120-year old ex-industrial warehouse on the banks of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis.

They have no climate control, air conditioning or permanent heating system just some simple coil heaters; please bear this in mind when submitting your work. Projects by individual artists that propose to use the entire 12,000 sq feet of gallery space are always encouraged.

They are particularly interested in proposals conceived specifically for The Soap Factory galleries. (So do your homework!) Their programming is unique in that they select only a small proportion of the artists they exhibit from their pool of submissions. They commonly receive 400 artist submissions per season.

DEADLINE: November 30, 2010. They do NOT accept e-mailed submissions so this is a POSTMARK deadline.

REVIEW DATES: Submissions are reviewed for exhibition between May 1st and October 31st.

NOTIFICATION: March 2011

They may keep your submission on file for up to 8 months. Do not call or email to check on your submission. The Soap Factory does not return work. Please only send materials that you do not need to be returned.

COVER PAGE indicating the following information: Name, Email, Phone, Address, Medium of submission

IMAGES: Up to ten color images of your work on disc. Digital images must be Mac compatible (jPeg, tif, pdf) not less than 1500×2100 pixels. Each submitted image MUST ALSO BE PRINTED IN HARD COPY. Submissions that do not include hard copy images WILL NOT BE REVIEWED.

RESUME, artist statement and project description/ proposal.

Many of you seemed to love the idea of finding new inspiration in Barcelona with a Residency sponsored by homesession.org. What about finding inspiration as a group? I don’t mean a collaborative group necessarily…

What about that group of you out there that are fighting for the arts in your community, or a group of friends separated by life (and miles) that need a chance to reconnect…to art and each other?

Check out this Call for Submissions for those interested in an Artist Residency in Tokyo sponsored by 3331 Arts Chiyoda. Anyone can apply, but they encourage groups of 2 to 5 artists. 3331 Arts Chiyoda is a newly-launched arts and cultural center in the heart of Tokyo. Maybe their new beginning can be a part of your renewal.

3331 Arts Chiyoda is launching a new residency program open to artists, curators and creative practitioners internationally. With a full range of facilities including accommodation, studio and gallery, creative practitioners have the exceptional opportunity to extend their artistic engagement in the heart of Tokyo.

Not only will artists be able to pursue their own individual research and practice, but they will be connected to the extensive network of Tokyo’s art scene through the hub that is 3331. With the energy of the electronics and anime haven of Akihabara right at one’s doorstep and the traditional cultures of downtown but a stone’s throw away artists will be able to experience all aspects of this kaleidoscopic city from this convenient base.

Artists are not only able to spend time in Tokyo, but are able to create work onsite and then finally exhibit what they have developed during their stay, in the distinct setting of 3331 Arts Chiyoda. They are pleased to be able to offer these facilities to artists who can contribute to the diverse creative expressions of this cosmopolitan metropolis and engage its inhabitants in new ways.

They particularly encourage applications from galleries, museums, universities, and arts organizations. They also welcome approaches from individual artists; however, they recommend that artists consider applying in groups of 2-5. CALL for ENTRIES: Commercial Art Videos

NUTCRACKERS

I am intrigued by video production & video editing. My 11-year old received a video camera for Christmas 2009, and the whole family has had a blast experimenting. My personal favorite is my child’s battle of the decorative wooden nutcrackers with a background soundtrack of Smoke on the Water…hummed by him. Hehehehe.

Commercials may or may not be the most creative thing on TV or the Internet, but we think you can make them better. Take any broadcast commercial, cut it, dub it, repeat it, or flip it and make it art.

Artists, producers, directors kids, adults and non-art people are invited to submit a manipulated “commercial” of up to 60 seconds in length using a broadcast commercial as the raw footage. Each submission may utilize the video and audio in any way and may include other footage; pretty much everything is eligible. Videos must be under 3MB in length in .flv or .swf formats.

All submitted and accepted videos will be available at www.apexart.org/videocall.htm and will be presented in an exhibition at apexart from November 10 – December 22, 2010. During the exhibition’s run, videos will be voted on by visitors of the exhibition space and the website. The top five works will be presented on a public screen in Manhattan and the creator of the top scoring work will receive a $2,000 cash prize.

DEADLINE: All work must be submitted by Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010.

Applications are welcomed and encouraged from around the world.

Commercials do not have to be in English.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I send more than one video?
A: No, please send your best one, they will only accept one video per person.

Q: I have a .avi, .mp4, .m4v, .mov (etc.) video file. How do I convert my video file into a .flv or .swf file?
A: Most video editing programs allow you to export in .flv or .swf. If you cannot find this option, you can always use an online program such as YouTube or Vimeo to get the correct file format. Upload the original and then just download. It will be auto converted.

Q: Can I use any kind of commercial?
A: Any commercial (video) from TV or internet that tries to sell or promote something can be used for your video editing project.

Q: How much of an original commerical needs to be used in order to be eligible?
A: There is no time limit, however it should be evident from viewing your edited video that a commercial was used in the footage.

Q: Will I get sued for using copyrighted material?
A: Videos submitted using copyrighted material that is substantially edited and manipulated is generally considered artistic commentary under the Fair Use doctrine.

Q: When will the videos be on view at apexart?
A: The video call exhibition will be on view for voting at www.apexart.org from Nov. 10 – Dec. 22, 2010.

Q: Can I or should I submit images or cvs?
A: No resumes are needed. They just need your name, email address, and location (city, state/country) in addition to the video.

Q. Who will vote on the videos?
A. Anyone with an internet connection will be able to vote for their one favorite video. Don’t forget to tell your friends to vote.

CALL for ENTRIES: Scary Art – BOO!

BOO!

I love Halloween. I love pumpkin pancakes and candy corn. And the season to consume them both is just around the corner. I am also a fan of all the retro-inspired graphics that surround this time of the year – smiley pumpkins and figurines of little kids covered in white sheets as the cutest ghosts that ever existed. However, I am fascinated by all the dark imagery that surrounds the season as well.

Check out this Call for Entries from Bristol Art Gallery called “BOO.” It is an all-hung, open exhibit which could build your resume and the entry fee is only $15. It is open to both 2-D and 3-D art, and the gallery only takes 30% commission…what more could you want in a show?

CALL for ENTRIES: Boo!

Bristol Art Gallery’s Open Juried exhibit “BOO!” will be open to original works in 2-D, 3-D & Photography created in the last two years which depict the “Spirit” and many moods of “ALL HALLOWS’ EVE”.

PRIZES: Over $2000. in cash prize awards, 1st, 2nd & 3rd place in all three categories.

Opening Reception Sat., Oct. 2nd from 4 – 7. Closing Reception Sat., Oct. 30th from 6 – 9 or when it’s over! Costumes are optional.

Refreshments will be served and for those believers curious about their futures a “real” Fortune Teller will be in attendance.

Open to all artists at least 18 years old. Art work previously shown at Bristol Art Gallery not eligible. All 2-D ART must be suitably wired for hanging, no sawtooth or clips. All entries must be for sale. Up to three entries allowed per artist.

Size restriction are as follows: Artists may enter one piece that must not measure more than 24×36, and two entries that must not measure more than 18×24 including frames. Unframed works must be properly gallery wrapped with no rough canvas or staples showing.

3-D ART must be fully assembled and not to exceed more than 18×24 with base.

PHOTOGRAPHY – Prints must be framed. The minimum print size at least one dimension must be greater than 9 inches. Maximum size of 16×20 including frame.

ENTRY FEE: $15 plus an additional $5 each additional entry & 30% commission

All work must be properly protected and labeled with artists name /address /phone number /email/ title, price and media info of their entry.

The Gallery will do it’s best to protect your artwork when it is in their possession but it will not be insured by the Bristol Art Gallery and the gallery will not be held responsible for loss or damage.

They recommend that artists carry their own insurance.

The gallery also reserves the right to use your name and images of your artwork for publicity purposes. Your entry into this exhibition constitutes your acceptance of the terms of this agreement.
