SPROUTS ALIVE!

I am reclaiming brussel sprouts for the tasty side.  I am tired of hearing them spoken of in the same tone as snot, vomit and boiled okra.  Gone are the days of bitter and boiled little cabbage-like veggies that your mother forced you to eat.  Celebrate the roasted sprout with rosemary and a squeeze of lemon.  Live a little.  Actually, live and let live.  This next Call is about reclamation and celebration too.  Say it with art…

Check out this Call for Entries for Enacting Queerness by The Omni Proje[q]t.  There is NO ENTRY FEE, but it will require a bit of a leap of faith on your part.  Take a chance!

*Editor’s Note:  Unfortunately, a handful of you will unsubscribe from this site because of the content of this post.  It makes me sad–not that you’re going, although I hate to see people leave us behind, but because if you are  a human that still has issues with the gender and/or sexuality of others, your life must be very small indeed.

Enacting Queerness

ELIGIBILITY:  All artists are invited to submit their artwork pertaining to the theme for the exhibition, which will take place in a space on Elm Street in Downtown Greensboro, NC for one night only.

I take some foods for granted.  Friday I learned a valuable lesson:  I am addicted to granola bars.  My beloved husband packs my daily lunch that I then refrigerate or reheat at my office.  There is usually one entree, a granola bar, and two additional salty snacks.  This past Friday he forgot to pack a granola bar.  Without my standard 10:30 am snack, I was lost all day.  Lost like I would be if you took away my BlackBerry.  Sad, but true.  This Call for Entries allows you to use that cell phone that is probably surgically connected to your hand anyway.  Take a look…

Just the other day, I admitted my food stereotypes about Phoenix.  I’ll continue today with Texan food stereotypes.  I think steak or Tex-Mex.  All things Mexican or Spanish, right?  I never thought of chicken fried steak.  Chicken fried steak is considered German, a derivative of Wiener Schnitzel, a veal steak deep-fried in a breadcrumb batter. In chicken fried steak, beef scraps are used and beaten into steak form.  A milk-based cream gravy is almost always served with chicken fried steak too.  Yes, folks…Welcome to Texas.  Okay, I did my research on Texas.  This next call will require you to do a little Texas research as well before creating your artwork.  Take a look…

YOU
GLAD?

While in Phoenix recently, I discovered that our hosts were lucky to have an orange tree in their back yard.  Every morning I went out back to the sweet smell of orange blossoms and the overwhelmingly loud buzzing of bees.  I am inspired by the smell and sound.  I wonder if I can get an orange tree to grow in my Smoky Mountain yard?  This next Call is from California — where they have no problem getting orange trees to grow either.

I have been in Phoenix for a few days opening my own show at Perihelion Arts.  And, I have learned a few things about stereotypes.  I thought I was going to a dust bowl to eat south western food.  Turns out–not so much.  The grass is still green there.  Trees still grow there.  And my favorite restaurant sampling during my trip turned out to be Mediterranean influenced tappas at Pita Jungle.  Go figure.  This next Call gives you a chance to break a few landscape stereotypes.  Take a look…

ART PUBLICATION: Three Magazines

Learn How to Get an Art Show!

SPRINKLES PLEASE

Magazines are skinny lately.

Have you noticed?

I suppose online zines are shrinking the proverbial waist of the magazine industry just as online newspapers are making words on newsprint less and less common.

My advice?  Eat a doughnut.

Most folks want the instant gratification of Google that ends in a digital zine.  Information sought.  Information found.  But…

Rolling Stone MagazineI still love the feel of paper, inky or slick, in my hands. I don’t own a digital reader because I still buy books. I subscribe to Conde’ Nast Traveler so I can fill my dreams with tours of gilded Russian palaces and sunny Italian beaches. I have recently re-subscribed to Rolling Stone after a hiatus of more than 10 years, and trust me, more than just Keith Richards needs some fattening up.

Eat a doughnut, folks.

So why am I babbling on about magazines? It is a question of legitimacy. I have had lots of conversations with lots of subscribers and friends about what constitutes artistic legitimacy or “making it,” aside from the ability to support oneself artistically.

The Artist's MagazineIs it an academic pedigree or a resume of academic acceptance? Is it great reviews or stunning retail sales? Is it merely a well-hung cohesive show with “guts” and meaning?  I don’t know, sorry.  I can teach you how to get a show, but I can’t teach you how to be happy with it.

So, for all of you whose artistic dream is to be on the cover of the Rolling Stone, here’s a short menu of great art magazines…get to work.

1. The Artist’s Magazine. This is the first art mag I every owned. I was inspired by the work…wanted to be a painter…wanted my work to be featured among its pages.  That hasn’t worked out for me so far, but their Annual Art Competition has a looming deadline so don’t procrastinate.

Juxtapoz Magazine2. Juxtapoz Art & Culture Magazine (pronounced Jucks-tah-pozz) is a magazine created in 1994 by a group of artists and collectors including Robert Williams Fausto Vitello, C.R. Stecyk III, and Greg Escalante, to both help define and celebrate urban alternative and underground contemporary art.  Anytime I have an art block, I find flipping through an issue of Juxtapoz inspires me.

Unique in the field of publishing, Juxtapoz emerged at a critical moment during the genesis of the late-20th Centuy underground art movement with the mission of connecting seminal modern genres like psychedelic and hot rod art, graffiti, street art, and illustration, to the context of broader more historically recognized genres of art like Pop, assemblage, old master painting, and conceptual art.

ARTnews Magazine

3.  ARTnews is the oldest and most widely circulated art magazine in the world. Its readership of 200,000 in 123 countries includes collectors, dealers, historians, artists, museum directors, curators, connoisseurs, and enthusiasts.

Published eleven times a year, ARTnews reports on the art, personalities, issues, trends and events shaping the international art world. In clear, well-crafted language that is as comprehensible to the novice as it is to the expert, the magazine offers a lively, provocative, and visually stimulating package that informs as well as entertains with news dispatches from a worldwide network of correspondents, hard-hitting investigative reports, criticism, and opinion.

I am still posting from the road, folks, but stay tuned… we will return to our regularly scheduled programming in just a few days!

BE BULGAR!

I love that more exotic foods are available in virtually any grocery store.  I live in a pretty small town, but because we have a large tourist population, the grocery store selections are a little better.  With Spring just around the corner, tabbouleh salad is calling my name.  Ten years ago, I would had to have gone in search of an ethnic or gourmet market and paid $10 for a bad boxed mix.  Now it is as simple as taking a trip to my local Food City.  Once again, my food world has intersected with my art world… this Call for Entries is a great example of new ideas in art accessibility.  No invitation to this opening is necessary.  Take a look…

FREE, but ODD

The strangest thing I’ve ever eaten is Fugu, also known as Japanese pufferfish.  What was strange was that I ate it in the USVI at the hands of a Japanese Chef who sold me on eating it BECAUSE #1 it was FREE and #2 it could kill me if prepared improperly.  No meal is worth dying for, folks; ahhh, the stupidity of being eighteen.  Well, clearly, I didn’t die, and unfortunately, I don’t really remember the taste due to my adrenaline-fueled expectation that I could, at any moment, drop dead.  In hindsight, I don’t REALLY know what I ate.
