I am a magazine reader. Yep, the paper ones. I read and peruse imagery as motivation for household projects, photography and, of course, cooking. One of my favorite food magazines? Food and Wine, of course. I have delusions of grandeur each and every time I watch Top Chefs that I could win that show and have my work featured in F&W. Instead, I am opting to submit my art to this Call for Creative Quarterly. Do you think Food & Wine will be so impressed they will cover my food anyway? Me neither. Anyway, don’t miss this opportunity…

Creative Quarterly asks the question: Where does your inspiration come from?

What person, place or thing inspires your work?

By launching a new redesign, they’ve become a much more interactive journal. They search the web for interesting projects in art and design to share with their readers. They ask their readers to share what inspires them. The purpose, not to copy but to inspire.

Take a look at back issues of Creative Quarterly! Inspiration can come from an innovative chair design or an unusual ring or from an interview with a well-known designer or artist or something from ones past.

Creative Quarterly is the best of art and design, quarterly.

ELIGIBILITY & MEDIA: Open to all undergraduate and graduate students, recent graduates, professors, instructors, graphic designers, art directors, illustrators, photographers and fine artists in all media.

Surreal Visions

SlowArt Productions presents the group thematic exhibition, Surreal Visions. This exhibition will focus on art inspired by the surreal and will be held at the Limner Gallery.

Eligible are all forms of surreal and visionary figurative art. All interpretations of the theme “Surreal Visions” will be reviewed and considered.

ELIGIBILITY AND RESTRICTIONS: The competition is open to all artists, national and international, working in all media. All forms of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, graphics, digital and installation art, video, etc. are eligible. Entrants must be 18 years of age or older to apply. Wall mounted works must not be taller than 72″ no wider than 120″. Sculptural work must fit through a standard height, 36″wide entry door.

DEADLINE: The final postmarked deadline is June 30, 2011. Entries must be postmarked or submitted via email by this date.

NOTIFICATION: Artists will be notified of acceptance or non-acceptance no later than July 20, 2011. Results will be posted on or before this date at: http://www.slowart.com/results. Notification will be made via email and/or by mail with the return of materials in the SASE provided by the artist. Artists who do not include the SASE because they do not want their submission materials returned must provide a self addressed stamped #10 (letter size) envelope if they wish to be notified by mail.

All artists who provide a working email address will be notified via email, if no email or return envelope is provided, artists will only be notified if accepted to exhibit. Type or print your email address clearly, if a mistake is made reading it you will not be notified. Read the notification page for details of the notification policy.

ENTRY FEES: There is a $35.00 entry fee for one to four artworks entered, presentation is by digital files. There is a $5.00 fee for each additional artwork above four. Details of 2D artwork count as an additional artwork. Sculptors may provide one additional view per artwork without cost. Artists accepted to exhibit will not be charged additional fees of any kind. Payments may be by check or money order payable to SlowArt Productions, or by credit card using PayPal.

SALES: All works in the show must be for sale. The gallery will take a 30 % commission on all sales. Sale price is determined by the artist.

EXHIBITION and AWARDS: Winning artists will be featured in a group exhibition at the Limner Gallery, September 3 – October 1, 2011. The exhibition will also be displayed on the Limner Gallery web site. One artist will be awarded a two page display in Direct Art Volume #19, Fall 2012 issue. Two artists will be awarded a single page display. Direct Art is distributed to bookstores across the USA including Borders and Barnes and Noble.

Open to Interpretation is a juried book competition of photography, poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction. Each book begins with a themed call for photos. The chosen photos become the literary inspiration for the writers’ submissions. A book is created that matches each winning photo with two stories or poems that offer different interpretations of the image. The unique collaboration adds new dimensions to both the photos and the written word.

He believes in helping each student find their voice rather than making pretty pictures. His second book Earth Meets Spirit will be coming out in late 2010. Doug continues to explore the notion of what is sacred in his photography and in his life. Personal heroes include Jimi Hendrix, the Dalai Lama and whoever invented the espresso machine.

RESOURCE for ARTISTS: Model Mayhem

Food access easily drives what you actually consume. There isn’t a real restaurant within 10 miles of my home. As a result, we cook almost everyday. There is only one grocery store within 10 miles of my home; therefore, there is no late night run to the store for chips or ice cream or chocolate. We have to plan our bad behavior in advance. This post will help you plan your artistic behavior and give you phenomenal access to a great artist resource.

MODEL MAYHEM

My esteemed collegue, Arizona-based artist and photographer Jerry Portelli, has been shoving me out of my comfort zone for a couple of years now. And, he introduced me to Model Mayhem–an online resource, primarily for models, that offers photographers and artists a way to connect to models near them. For the models, it is an online “go see.” For you, as an artist, you get to pour over their profile and previous work to find just what inspires you.

DEADLINE: Quit procrastinating

NOTIFICATION: The sooner you join, the sooner you’ll find your muse.

ENTRY FEE: I have had several models agree to TFP or Trade for Prints in lieu of cash. They build their portfolio, and I have money to eat and still produce artwork. Model Mayhem is free to join, but you must be approved.

ELIGIBILITY: The approval process isn’t automated. You must fit into a member category and the requirements for that category.

Here are a few highlights from their site:

Bio Requirements You are asked to provide a short bio as part of your application. Please provide details about your experience, goals, reasons for being on MM, or any other relevant information. Please err on the side of providing more info rather than less. Also, don’t make it sound like a personal ad.

Must Be In A Member Category

Your profile must clearly fit into one of the member categories listed upon sign up: Model, Photographer, Hair Stylist / Makeup Artists / Wardrobe Stylist, Photoshop Wizard, Clothing Designer, Body Painter or Artist / Painter.

Model Mayhem is a photographer's dream! You Must Be You They do not allow profiles to be set up or managed by people other than the profile owner. Passwords and login information should always be kept private.

Members must be 16 years of age or older. Members under 18 are not allowed to display photos that we deem too provocative or revealing. Unless you’re 18 or over you may not display any level of nudity (including “implied” nudity), depictions of bondage or any image that is sexual in nature.

Provide 4 Different Photos (or more!) At least four different photos are required for all accounts. No duplicates, re-crops, or manipulations of the same image. Members are expected to maintain a minimum of four relevant photos at all times.

Quality Images Required

They want quality images on Model Mayhem. Your photos must be judged to be of sufficient quality. This means that you should not submit webcam shots, mirror shots, poorly exposed photos, too grainy, too much compression, arm’s-length self portraits, personal snapshots, etc.

Make Your Photos Big Enough

MM recommends that your photos be 600-800 pixels on the longest side. Anything less than 200×300 pixels or so is typically too small to see. Images wider than 800 pixels will be resized.

No Fakes They take copyright laws very seriously. If your photos or profile appear to be the work of someone else, you will be denied.

No Pornography Pornographic material is not allowed on this site. This includes photos, linking to such sites or networking, or referencing adult work in your bio or portfolio.

Photographer Requirements

Show A Model Photographers must have at least 4 different photos specifically of adult human models. Children, cars, landscapes, animals, etc do not count. Show Variety. Please provide at least 2 different models or 2 different locations.

Artist/Painter Requirements

Use Models. Please focus your submissions on art that utilizes models (human) rather than just landscapes, etc. Original Only. Artwork must be original only. No copies of existing artwork.

ART PUBLICATION: Three Magazines

SPRINKLES PLEASE

Magazines are skinny lately.

Have you noticed?

I suppose online zines are shrinking the proverbial waist of the magazine industry just as online newspapers are making words on newsprint less and less common.

My advice? Eat a doughnut.

Most folks want the instant gratification of Google that ends in a digital zine. Information sought. Information found. But…

I still love the feel of paper, inky or slick, in my hands. I don’t own a digital reader because I still buy books. I subscribe to Conde’ Nast Traveler so I can fill my dreams with tours of gilded Russian palaces and sunny Italian beaches. I have recently re-subscribed to Rolling Stone after a hiatus of more than 10 years, and trust me, more than just Keith Richards needs some fattening up.

Eat a doughnut, folks.

So why am I babbling on about magazines? It is a question of legitimacy. I have had lots of conversations with lots of subscribers and friends about what constitutes artistic legitimacy or “making it,” aside from the ability to support oneself artistically.

Is it an academic pedigree or a resume of academic acceptance? Is it great reviews or stunning retail sales? Is it merely a well-hung cohesive show with “guts” and meaning? I don’t know, sorry. I can teach you how to get a show, but I can’t teach you how to be happy with it.

So, for all of you whose artistic dream is to be on the cover of the Rolling Stone, here’s a short menu of great art magazines…get to work.

1. The Artist’s Magazine. This is the first art mag I every owned. I was inspired by the work…wanted to be a painter…wanted my work to be featured among its pages. That hasn’t worked out for me so far, but their Annual Art Competition has a looming deadline so don’t procrastinate.

2. Juxtapoz Art & Culture Magazine (pronounced Jucks-tah-pozz) is a magazine created in 1994 by a group of artists and collectors including Robert Williams Fausto Vitello, C.R. Stecyk III, and Greg Escalante, to both help define and celebrate urban alternative and underground contemporary art. Anytime I have an art block, I find flipping through an issue of Juxtapoz inspires me.

Unique in the field of publishing, Juxtapoz emerged at a critical moment during the genesis of the late-20th Centuy underground art movement with the mission of connecting seminal modern genres like psychedelic and hot rod art, graffiti, street art, and illustration, to the context of broader more historically recognized genres of art like Pop, assemblage, old master painting, and conceptual art.

ARTnews Magazine

3. ARTnews is the oldest and most widely circulated art magazine in the world. Its readership of 200,000 in 123 countries includes collectors, dealers, historians, artists, museum directors, curators, connoisseurs, and enthusiasts.

Published eleven times a year, ARTnews reports on the art, personalities, issues, trends and events shaping the international art world. In clear, well-crafted language that is as comprehensible to the novice as it is to the expert, the magazine offers a lively, provocative, and visually stimulating package that informs as well as entertains with news dispatches from a worldwide network of correspondents, hard-hitting investigative reports, criticism, and opinion.

CALL for SUBMISSIONS: Toad

Frogs’ legs are one of the better-known delicacies of French and Cantonese cuisine. They are also eaten in other regions, such as the Caribbean, Portugal, Slovenia, northwest Greece, Italy, Spain, and the Midwest southern regions of the United States. A type of frog called the edible frog is most often used for this dish. They are often said to taste like chickenbecause of their mild flavor, with a texture most similar to chicken wings. I like them with a side cucumber-dill yogurt. Yum. There is no witty food/art connection today–I just love frog legs, and jumped at the opportunity. hehehe. You cannot consume this next opportunity from Toad, at least not literally, but it does sound delicious. Take a look…

Toad comprises any number of species of artists of the creative order, often characterized by their exciting work, thick skin, and wart-like ideas. To maintain its lively form, Toad cultivates bimonthly issues with rotating editors and staff to ensure that the content stays fresh and diverse.

Every other month Toad showcases new poetry, prose, and visual art. As an ever-evolving amphibian, the editors of Toad select artists (“toadists”) from one of three pools: the first is a flourishing man-made pond, supplied with recommendations offered by previous contributors. The second is their sportive, always popular pool of open submissions. Lastly but not leastly, is the puddle-wonderful artistic response forum, which collects creative kickback from readers to establish an art orgy for all to enjoy.

MEDIA: They want it all: videos, music, collaborative projects, ekphrastic works, genre-crossing/bending art, and of course, all the usual suspects with Verbal Kint included.

There comes a time when you have to be more selective about kitchen gadgets. I have so many, and I love infomercials so much that if I didn’t have strict guidelines in place, I would definitely have to open a kitchen gadget ebay store to justify all of my late-night expenditures. Super dooper potato peeler, I’m there. Gadget that makes my boiled eggs square, love it, but no. This next opportunity is a practical potato peeler in a world of square egg shows. It’s worth a look…

ART PUBLICATION: International Survey

Crussell Fine Arts is pleased to announce an open call for our summer 2011 reference journal: International Survey. This fine art periodical will be a reference book for curators, gallery directors and collectors, which will assist them in the development of shows and collections.

ELIGIBILITY & MEDIA: Artists who work in all medias to submit three outstanding pieces created within the past two years. Selected artists will be included in the summer 2011 edition of International Survey with a single image of their work and direct contact information.

DEADLINE: All submissions should be postmarked by May 1, 2011.

PERSONAL ZOO

One of my very favorite foods as a kid was animal crackers. I liked to line them up in pairs and then bite off their heads and legs before eating the bodies. A little gruesome, and I’m not certain what that says about me. But I do crack my goldfish crackers in half before I eat them even now. Do food interpreters (like dream interpreters) exist? Clearly I need one. My prescription? Buy a box of animal crackers for inspiration before entering this next call.

CALL for ENTRIES: 3×3 Mag Children’s Show

More than just children’s books. More than just children’s books published in the United States. This competition includes anything and everything related to reaching children under the age of 12.

ELIGIBILITY: Any work produced or published in the calendar year 2010. Entries need not be published in 2010 as long as the imagery was produced during that time period. Entries are accepted from every country. Published and non-published work is eligible. Entries may be made by the illustrator, art director, author, editor or publisher.

MEDIA: Children’s books—published and unpublished, book covers—published or unpublished, children’s illustration—published or unpublished, educational materials, editorial, children’s programming, miscellaneous and young adult.

DEADLINE: Deadline for the Children’s Show is April 22, 2011. Entries must be upload or postmarked no later than this date.

ENTRY FEE: Single entries are $30—single title or single illustration, Series entries (3-5 titles by the same illustrator or a series of illustrations with the same theme) are $35.

JURORS: The international panel of judges for this year’s 3×3 Children’s Show include Paolo Canton, Publisher, Tipipittori, Italy, Cynthia Matthews, Creative Director, Mudpuppy, Yvonne Silver, Art Buyer, Scholastic, Christine Kettner, Art Director, Clarion and Harcourt Children’s Books and illustrators Camilla Engman, Sweden and André da Loba, Portugal—presently residing in the US.

AWARDS: They will award Gold, Silver, Bronze and Distinguished Merit awards and a Best of Show Award. All winners will be featured in the 3×3 Illustration Annual No. 8, winners receive a complimentary copy of the publication.
