I am a collector at heart. I enjoy having odd jars of condiments just a cabinet door away. I love having kitchen gadgets and utensils that I only have reason to use once a year. But what I most love to collect is art. I have art stuffed in every nook and cranny of my house. Including a little carving of late artist Bob Ross (click here for image) who came in his own little cigarette box marked “Bob in a Box” part of a series by Bob Snead , Founder of Redux. This next show gives YOU a chance to be both collected and a collector!

Check out this Call for Entries from the Rochester Contemporary Art Center (RoCo) for the 6x6x2012. There is no entry fee for up to 10 submissions. This show is all hung, looks great on your resume, and benefits a great member of the art community!

Help RoCo build an exhibition of artworks from ALL 50 US States and more countries than last year. Please invite everyone you know to send their artwork early. 6×6 began as a small fundraising exhibition, but has grown into an international art phenomenon.

Last year over 5,000 artworks
from 43 US States & 22 Countries were entered in this
astounding exhibition!

6x6x2012 is the fifth exhibition of thousands of original artworks, made and donated by celebrities, international and local artists, designers, college students, youths, and YOU. Each artwork will be 6×6 square inches and signed only on the back, to be exhibited anonymously. All artworks will be for sale to the public for $20 each to benefit Rochester Contemporary Art Center (RoCo). Artist names will be revealed to the buyer only upon purchase and all works will remain on display for the duration of the exhibition

Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery presents a Juried Competition, in which 2D artists from around the world are called upon to make online submissions for the theme Cityscapes for inclusion into the April 2012 online group exhibition.

ELIGIBILITY: Light Space & Time encourages entries from all 2D artists regardless of where they reside and regardless of their experience or education in the art field.

MEDIA: All two dimensional media are eligible.

DEADLINE: The submission process for artists ends March 29, 2012.

ENTRY FEE: $10 for 2 Entries or $15.00 for 3 to 5 Entries

AWARDS: Awards will be for 1st through 10th places. In addition, 5 artists will be recognized with Honorable Mention awards. Depending on the amount and the quality of the entries these winning categories may be expanded and there also may be Special Recognition awards posted as well.

BENEFITS: Your artwork is exposed to thousands of visitors to the website each month. Your artwork is retained on the website in the Archives section for further and ongoing exposure.

The Artist’s website is linked to Light Space & Time. Winners for that month are promoted in direct email pieces to gallery owners and directors, corporate art representatives and decision makers in the art world. CALL for ENTRIES: National Photography Award

Sadly, most of the indulgent foods I love are not necessarily the most healthy. During cold weather, I always dream of sitting under a palm tree and drinking a frozen coconut concoction, umbrella-optional, while the palm fronds shade me from the sun. Coconut milk has a fat content of approximately 17%. Uh huh. Well, maybe this next show will give you a chance to enjoy the palm tree part, and coconut could be a great way to celebrate…

The photography exhibition will be installed in The von Liebig Art Center’s Frederick O. Watson Gallery from June 4 through August 10, 2012.

The von Liebig Art Center is located in Naples, Florida in the heart of the 5th Avenue South shopping, dining and arts district.

ELIGIBILITY:
Artists living in the US.

MEDIA: Photography. Photographers are invited to enter one photograph taken in the United States after January 1, 2010 and not previously exhibited at The von Liebig Art Center.

DEADLINE: March 22, 2012 at 4 pm

NOTIFICATION: To view the results for your entry, log into your Juried Art Services account on or after April 9, 2012 and go to “applications.” The grand prize award winner will be notified by telephone or E-mail on May 24, 2012.

ENTRY FEE: $32 for non-members & (for current Naples Art Association members the entry fee is $27) and is payable online by credit card.

JUROR: Bradly Dever Treadaway is a multidisciplinary artist and educator specializing in digital media and installation. Utilizing a diverse set of photographic processes, video and performance, Treadaway’s work appropriates public and private archives to investigate the disintegration of family structure and the breakdown of cultural passage. Currently a Faculty Member and the Digital Media Coordinator at the International Center of Photography in New York City, Treadaway is a Fulbright Scholar to Italy and has exhibited work in 11 countries.

AWARDS: A $5,000 grand prize award will be presented to one photographer. The grand prize award winner will receive two nights hotel accommodations in Naples, Florida and round-trip economy class air fare to attend a preview reception and award presentation on Friday, June 1, 2012. SALES: Photographs exhibited in “Camera USA” may be available for purchase or listed as NFS (not for sale). Once stated, neither the price nor title of the photograph may be changed. The NAA processes sales and will retain a 30% commission on all photographs sold during the exhibition. Proceeds from sales support the NAA’s exhibition programs. Photographers’ proceeds will be mailed. Photographers generally receive their checks within three weeks from the close of the exhibition.

Through That Which is Seen will represent a range of interpretations of the diorama on all scales.

They aim to exhibit pieces borrowing from museums’ use of the diorama as a means to inform and educate to works that turn the more conventional notion of diorama on its head. From natural history displays to shoebox book reports…

The word diorama often conjures
memories from childhood.

However, dioramas can be found dotted throughout our daily lives. Think about storefront displays, televisions, and medicine cabinets, to name a few. Does a shower become a performative diorama when in use? Or a car?

Another Valentine’s day has come and gone without a gourmet candlelit dinner. In fact, I had fried chicken from deli section of my grocery store and waffle fries. Romantic, eh? Well, maybe my idea of romance is a bit different than you would expect. I spend a lot of my life taking great care of the nutritional value and creativity of my meals. Love means making it okay to eat fried chicken (not baked) in my pajamas while watching Biggest Loser. No really. This next Call is a new twist on love-themed shows. Is this one for you?

Ramen noodles are a marvel. I am amongst the millions that have been on a sleeping-on-someone’s-couch budget at one point in my life. SOHO20 Gallery Chelsea is a non-profit artist run gallery that has been promoting the work of women artists since 1973 through gallery exhibitions and public programming. As part of our continued commitment to the arts they initiated a 3 month studio residency program for visual artists.

The studio space is located at 547 West 27^th Street, in the heart of the Chelsea art community of New York City. The setting offers a community of art professionals and commercial as well as non-profit galleries and art spaces. The studio’s proximity to the contemporary art center makes it a convenient place to see renowned exhibitions in the neighborhood, as well as arranging studio visits with gallerists, critics and curators.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to men & women. All applicants must be residents of the US or have a valid visa not expiring before the end of the program, 18 years or older, not enrolled in any degree-seeking program and able to demonstrate need for a studio.

MEDIA: All media

DEADLINE: March 6, 2012, midnight EST

NOTIFICATION: At least 2 weeks prior to the start of the residency.

ENTRY FEE: $35 application fee

SELECTION PROCESS: A panel of SOHO2O Gallery artists and board members will review applications and select an artist for the 2012 season. Artists will be selected based on the quality of their work and their potential for making the most of their time in the program.

RESIDENCY INCLUDES: Three-month studio residency. Work space only, artist must have separate housing arrangements. The studio is located within SOHO20 Gallery. It is a private studio space that measures 26×9 feet. The studio offers 13 foot ceilings and over 40 feet of workable wall space. Access to the studios 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Opportunities to present works to curators, critics, arts professionals, and the general public. Artists are encouraged to present finished work to the public near the end of the residency with a gallery-sponsored OPEN STUDIO event with an optional artists talk.

Since its opening in 2000, IPCNY has presented some 40 juried contemporary shows through its New Prints Program and an additional 20 shows focused on a particular theme, medium, genre or culture. Many exhibitions have toured to 2nd venues.

AWARDS: Two artists will get a joint exhibition at CAW in 2013. All selected entries will be included in an online gallery on the CAW website.

Comfort is defined by macaroni and cheese. Rather, the severity of the need for comfort is defined by macaroni and cheese. A beautiful melange of swiss with a touch of pungent blue served over campanelle means I’ve had a triumphant day and comfort is a bonus. Velveeta over elbows or Stouffer’s frozen means the day has sucked, and I need flannel pjs and a frozen drink with an umbrella. Creature Comforts: is an installation and sculpture exhibition that explores the idea of the things that make us comfortable and at ease in everyday life. In modern day society many luxury items are considered a necessity and are difficult to live without.

This exhibition will explore the artist’s view on modern creature comforts, and society’s dependence on the luxuries in life, and their residual effects.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: Sculpture and Installation work with the following limitations: Final measurements must be inclusive of frame, if applicable. Weight may not exceed 150 pounds. All entries must have been conceived and created by the artist submitting the work. All work selected must be ready for exhibit: 2D work must be framed with secure hanging devices; 3D work must be suitably prepared with instructions for installation. The gallery reserves the right to reject work that differs from submitted images.

Founded in 2010, microWave project acts a conduit between artists and groups and/or businesses to provide space for temporary, pop‐up, “micro” galleries. Their mission is to help promote these artists and educate the community by exploring alternative venues for emerging & established artists with an emphasis on site‐specific installation art. By developing programming to correspond with the exhibitions, they provide accessible art experiences to the public by encouraging community dialogue.

OPEN CALL: The Soap Factory

I almost moved to Kentucky because of a pickle/tamale factory. Have I told you this story? I know, I should search my posts before I write. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, for once it ISN’T about the pickles or tamales. Nope. I looked into the Paducah Artist Relocation program and fell in love with a pickle/tamale factory in need of rehab. I love factory spaces for art. This next Call is how I relieve myself of the anxiety of not taking the pickle/tamale factory. I submit every year. Eventually they will let me in. You wait and see…

Check out this Open Call from The Soap Factory (Minneapolis, MN). The Soap factory is looking for work for group exhibits, AND they offer installation support, travel, accommodations, and a stipend to those selected to exhibit. Did I mention NO ENTRY FEE?

The Soap Factory exhibits work in its galleries throughout the year. Exhibitions curated from submissions and could have as many as 8 artists. The Soap Factory is a 120-year old ex-industrial warehouse on the banks of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists. They are particularly interested in proposals conceived specifically for The Soap Factory galleries. (So do your homework!) Their programming is unique in that they select only a small proportion of the artists they exhibit from their pool of submissions. They commonly receive 400 artist submissions per season.

MEDIA:
All Media may be considered.

DEADLINE: April 30, 2012. They do NOT accept e-mailed submissions. So please keep in mind that this is a POSTMARK deadline.

2011 ARTIST of the YEAR: Pamela Zimmerman

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Today marks a New Year for ArtAndArtDeadlines.com! And, per usual, I am running a little behind the traditionally recognized New Year Celebration (December 31st), but I love Chinese New Year (yesterday). And, I almost got this post done by then, ha! I, of course, always appreciate an excuse to eat Chinese food…it doesn’t have to be a holiday.

This is the day we name the
Artist of the Year for 2011.

When this blog began in September of 2009, I was determined to cover not only art deadlines but also really good art. And, I chose a few artists here and there. I quickly realized that the Featured Artist program needed structure, or it would never really get done on any sort of regular basis. The $2 Art Contest was born.

I began to realize that the Featured Artist Page was getting crowded and adding more artists would lessen the impact of being Featured. I knew I had to start archiving artists yearly…

And the idea of
the Artist of the Year
was born.

I now give all of our Featured Artists each year notice that on December 31st at midnight EST, the Artist of the Year would be determined by the number of comments on their individual Featured Artist blog posts.

Right out of the gate, three artists’ fans came out strong: Denee Black, Deanna Bowdish, and Pamela Zimmerman. And after a month of voting, the final count was close… only a few dozen votes separated Black, Bowdish and Zimmerman.

I have enjoyed getting to know her this year. It feels to me like she showed a vulnerability to me, and thereby you, with her intricate, personal work. True vulnerability is rarely seen and often imitated.
