Cooking for you would be fun.  I hear from many of you from time to time about your art, but most often I hear about your food.  I often think about one or more of you when I’m cooking something you love.  This next Call will give me a chance to cook  for you–well, kind of.  This is a Call for a show at The Emporium Center Gallery, located just below The Balcony Gallery, also located at The Emporium Center in Knoxville, TN.  This show opens on July 4th downstairs at the same time my personal solo show opens upstairs in The Balcony Gallery.  I’ll be providing a few gluten-free goodies as hors d’oeuvres for both openings.  I would be thrilled to have you with me that night.  Enter the show & let me cook for you…

The Arts & Culture Alliance’s Then & Now Exhibition celebrates the ten-year anniversary of the Emporium Center by hosting 20-25 artists to showcase two of their works in a side-by-side format:

  • A piece of artwork from “then” (at least 10 years old) &
  • A piece of artwork from “now” (created within the last 2 years)

ROY G BIV Gallery is a nonprofit art gallery located in the historic Short North neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio. Founded in 1989, ROY G BIV is known for presenting innovative contemporary art by emerging artists from around the world.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

ENTRY FEE:  $25 for 10 to 15 images

JURORS:  Ann Hamilton is a visual artist internationally recognized for her large-scale multimedia installations. She is a Distinguished University Professor at The Ohio State University and a recipient of the Heinz Award and the MacArthur Fellowship. She represented the United States in the Venice Biennale in 1999.

His work has been exhibited nationally, including at the Socrates Sculpture Park, NY, and the North Dakota Museum of Art.  James Voorhies is the Director of the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard University.  He is curator and writer whose work has appeared in publications for Texte zur Kunst, frieze and Haus der Kulturen der Welt.  Lisa Dent is the Director of Resources & Award Programs at Creative Capital, a national nonprofit that provides grants to artists. Previously she served as the Curator of Contemporary Art at the Columbus Museum of Art.

MEDIA:  Accepted media includes Acrylic, Watercolor, Oil or Mixed Media or any media that can be applied to a 12” x 12” canvas.  Canvases may not be altered in size and/or shape.  Artists will receive their canvas from BAGA to ensure consistency of canvases.

FINISHED CANVAS DUE:  July 25, 2014

ENTRY FEE:  Fees are $20 for 1 entry or $25 for 2 entries. This fee covers the cost of the canvas, shipping and program printing.

SALES:  All artwork will be priced at $130 by BAGA. A 30% commission will be retained by BAGA on all sales.  *By my math, your profit after entry & commission would be $157 on 2 canvases or $71 on 1 canvas.

AWARDS: This is a free one-month residency.  Your residency offers free WiFi, maid service, $1,000 pesos food stipend & utilities. You will are responsible for laundry, transportation, entertainment & add’l food. International calls can be made via skype.

It is ramp season in the Smoky Mountains.  I am thrilled to have a locally-grown, fresh vegetable of any sort after the winter of snow & ice we just endured–even if it gives us all dragon breath.  If you aren’t familiar, ramps are spring onions with a strong garlic smell and onion flavor.  They are called “spring leeks” elsewhere.  We’re using them in salads, soups, casseroles and atop nearly every dish consumed in my house right now.  You name it, we’re finding a way to eat them.  Another sign of Spring is this next Call.  Maybe this one is for you…

We’re only a few weeks out from the Kentucky Derby.  And while I am not an avid follower of horse racing, I’ll take any excuse to eat Derby Pie.  Kentucky is famous for originating a lot of foods, actually.  The Hot Brown and Mutton BBQ are just a tiny corner of the paddock.  This next Call is from Paducah (Kentucky), a 3 hours drive from Louisville (the home of the Derby), but I’m betting I can still get Derby Pie there.  Don’t miss this great show opportunity…

Originating in 1975, The Paducah Summer Festival Photo Competition has grown from a fledgling contest to Paducah Photo, the region’s most prestigious annual photographic event. It is open to all without restrictions on size or content. It provides photographers with an outlet for their art, encouragement for growth in their vision and presentation and cash rewards for works of exceptional merit.

Each year from the hundreds of works submitted, 60 to 100 images are selected for exhibition by a highly qualified juror, with 8 to 10 of them receiving cash awards.

AWARDS: 1st Place $1000, 2nd Place $500, 3rd Place $300 & 2 Honorable  $100

SALES:  Sales will be encouraged where works are offered for purchase, but work need not be for sale to enter.  Yeiser Art Center will keep the standard gallery 40% commission on all sales, so price your work accordingly.
