BANANAS

Everyone has to eat on the run sometimes.  Not every meal can be separated into  courses that stretch out over 2 hours.  But, compact meals don’t have to be of lesser quality just because they are rushed.  My favorite all-in-one breakfast is bananas with crunchy peanut or almond butter with a few berries chopped for the top. Compact but quality–just like this 4 in 1 Call.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Submissions from Gallery W @ the Whit (Pittsfield, MA) for ALL of their shows for the year.  You read that correctly.  You have until August 20th to submit work in 4 categories, and the categories are GREAT…

CALL for ENTRIES: The Bicycle

on 2 wheels

If you work on a bicycle (cop, messenger, etc), how do you bring your lunch to work?  It isn’t as though bike messengers ride around on trikes with baskets on the back.  Are they, by nature of their transportation, doomed to eat out for lunch everyday.  I’m going to assume they make a special lunch bag just for cyclists.  This next Call is all about the bicycle as well.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from Theater Art Galleries (TAG in High Point, NC) for THE BICYCLE: Art Meets Form.  This theme is not as uncommon as you might think, so if you’re looking for inspiration…

me up

Olive oil seems quintessentially Italian to me.  But, did you know that the top producer of olive oil, by a fairly wide margin, is Spain? I always think of it as Italian or Greek.  This next Call is not just about oil, but water too.  Take a look at this opportunity…

Check out this Call for Entries from Woman Made Gallery (Chicago) for Oil & Water, a juried painting exhibit.  This is a fantastic venue (personal experience) in a town known for having a great art scene.  Give it a try…

CALL for ENTRIES: Abstraction

Learn more for the Santa Cruz Art League!ROMAINE
parm & garlic

I’ll take the Abstracted Caesar–hold the deconstruction.  I love it when culinary lingo takes a weird side trek.  Apparently the minute difference is that deconstructed food is technically a dish with ALL of its components separated.  Meanwhile, abstracted food features only the main components separated out.  Hilarious.  In the meantime, this next Call wants your Abstract work, not deconstructive work.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Santa Cruz Art League (CA) for Degrees of Abstraction.  We love this arts organization, and the juror has a well-documented personal style that runs contrary to the exhibition’s theme.  Interesting…

Abstraction

Moving beyond verisimilitude abstraction frees the artist from the object.  This opens the door for a vast variety of visual interpretations which indeed makes abstract art the most challenging.  The artist’s facility with the materials & focus on surface makes abstraction particularly interesting today.  But w/o personal content, symbolism or “event”,  it risks becoming conceptually mundane & void of meaning.

He currently instructs courses at Mendocino College in Ukiah & works as a freelance illustrator & muralist.

weirdness

As I become more food wise, I also become more food wary.  Even proven combinations like chocolate & peanut butter or mozzarella & balsamic become tiresome.  And as I get bored, I start branching out and trying foods together just out of curiosity.  Watermelon with olive oil & basil is delightful, by the way.  That combination is as good as the combination award for this next call.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from SlowArt Productions for A Show of Heads at the Limner Gallery (NY).  The awards for this show include BOTH a gallery show & art publication.  Great combo…

CALL for ENTRIES: Feast your Eyes

Why NOT food?  Yes, it is that time of year again.  I’ve received more hate mail from artists that think this blog would be far more effective if I would just quit talking about food.  The last time this happened, I actually added “a food-themed art blog” to the header.  To be honest, the half-dozen hate mail emails I get a year don’t really bother me.  But, I am always amazed at how much anger people can muster for the most insignificant issues.  This next call is equally obsessed with food.  I am in good company…

Check out this Call for Entries from Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center (Solomons, MD) for Feast your Eyes.  Fantastic space, great curatorial vision & always prestigious company.  Take a look…

Food can be more than sustenance; food can be a passion, an entertaining and delicious escape, a comfort, or an obsession. Food is vital to our lives and is certainly at the heart of every celebration. Food is the subject of endless books, news reports, scientific studies, social media posts, and conversations. We are deeply interested in its sustainability, production, processing, distribution, scarcity, quantity, quality, composition, and price. This show invites artists to explore these and other food-related issues, from the profound to the ridiculous. –from prospectus

& vinegar

Good food is all about balance, and it seems that a lot of commercial cooks and chefs are not cooking with a “full deck.”  The most common mistake?  A lack of acid.  A little lemon will transform your cheesecake from cloyingly sweet to perfectly delectable.  A little red wine vinegar will make your tuna salad memorable.  This next Call is looking for your take on working with less than a “full deck.”  Great theme…

I like my eggs over easy and my steak & tuna rare, maybe medium rare–depending on where I am.  In restaurants, I’m rarely able to order anything rare; however, at home where I have a clearer picture of the origin and handling, everything is rare.  The opportunity offered by this next Call is equally rare.  Please pay attention to this one…

My perspective on what makes for the perfect food shifts every few years.  Occasionally I get stuck in a phase for a while.  I worshiped all things spicy for 5+ years, and now I’ve been stuck on the piquant tang of goat cheese for 10+ years.  Taste buds only live about 10 days, so that gives lots of opportunity for a change of taste.  This next Call wants a female perspective, but not necessarily on food (although it isn’t excepted).  I encourage you to take on some academic shows.  How about this one, ladies?

oh my!

My current kitchen kryptonite is the potato.  I love them. I love them. I love them.  They do not love me.  They spike my blood sugar–which is fun, I’ll admit.  But the eventual crash off the sugar results in my desire to stuff my face and take a 3-day long nap.  I never realized how many I ate until I started trying to reduce my sugar intake.
