The collection never gets out of hand because we consume them. It’s a good system. This next Call can help you start a collection of your own. Consider it carefully…

Check out this Call for Entries for the 2nd Annual Print Exchange for a Cure to be hosted by the University of Dallas. The entry fee is low. You get 10 prints in return, AND your work ends up in a permanent University collection. Oh, did I mention the funds raised go to a reputable charity? You couldn’t ask for more.

CALL for ENTRIES:
Second Annual
Print Exchange

All printmakers are invited to participate in Print Exchange For A Cure. The purpose of this exchange is to raise funds in order to find a cure for blood cancers and offer financial support to those already battling these diseases. “the Cure” pictured right (and cropped at the bottom of the page) is a screenprint by Jonathan Stewart featured in the 2011 Print Exchange.

ELIGIBILITY: These works do not have to fall under any particular theme. The Paper size must be 7″x10″. The print/image size is open. 12 identical hand-pulled, original prints, with glassine or other archival leafing between each print, cut to match paper size must be submitted. Each print must be signed and numbered somewhere on the print. In addition, clearly print artist’s name, title, and media on the back of each print.

MEDIA: Printmaking including relief, intaglio, lithography, silkscreen, solar, woodblock, or any process other than digital.

DEADLINE: Prints must be received by May 9, 2012. But, participants must RSVP by April 25, 2012 by email to: sarahfrancisart@gmail.com.

ENTRY FEE: Minimum cost to participate is $20 US or $30 International paid via PayPal to sarahfrancisart@gmail.com or a check made out to Sarah Francis, other donations for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society are always appreciated. Please let me know if you would like a receipt for tax purposes.

PROCESS: A portfolio of 10 randomly selected prints will be mailed to each participant by June 1st. You will also be able to find digital images of all prints involved at the following website: www.sarahfrancisart.com.

The 11th print in each edition will be auctioned off through ebay. The proceeds from the sale of each piece will go to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and the 12th print in the edition will remain in the University of Dallas’s Private Collection of Prints. The works will also be exhibited in the Upper Gallery at the University of Dallas*.

CALL for ENTRIES: Macro/Micro

So I was watching a “hot dish” competition on Bizarre Foods America the other day. (A “hot dish” competition is sort of like a casserole contest.) This particular contest was being held in a mid-western town’s VFW or American Legion Hall. Many of the contestants sported beehive hairdos, mom jeans and gingham aprons. Then out of nowhere, a woman in Bermuda shorts whipped out a BLOW TORCH to brown the top of her tater tot casserole like it was creme brulée–proof positive that culinary technology and techniques have made it to every fishbowl, no matter how small. This next Call wants to see your techy stuff on a tiny scale or large, your choice. How big is your fishbowl?

Macro/Micro:
Photographic Extremes

This exhibit is about two photographic extremes, regardless of what you call them: Micro Photography (AKA Macro Photography) and Macrophotography (AKA Wide Angle Photography). The Darkroom Gallery wants to see your best work using these photographic tools.

Look it up, Macro (from Greek prefix “makros-” meaning “large”). Most sciences or areas of study use this prefix as defined. Macroeconomics, for example: “dealing with the behavior of the whole economy”. Microeconomics: “study of the behavior of small economic units, such as that of individual consumers, opposite of macroeconomics”. So what happened with Photography? Commonly, photographers call images of things small and extreme closeups, Macro Photography.

What then is Microphotography? Interestingly, Nikon uses the term Micro for it’s close focusing lenses, but not Canon. So, even the manufacturers don’t agree.

Microphotography reveals a world unseen by the naked eye. It often exposes patterns and designs that create sublime abstract images. Macrophotography gathers a view often larger and grander than can be gathered with the human eye. Both introduce distortions either through lens characteristics or stitching construction techniques that are creative tools used to produce these distinctive images.

ELIGIBILITY: Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If younger, you must have a legal guardian make the submission for you.

JUROR: Science photographer Felice Frankel is a research scientist in the Center for Materials Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Working in collaboration with scientists and engineers, Felice’s images have been published in over 200 journal articles and/or covers and various other publications for general audiences such as National Geographic, Nature, Science, Angewandte Chemie, Advanced Materials, Materials Today, PNAS, Newsweek, Scientific American, Discover Magazine, and New Scientist among others.

She is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and has received awards and grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation, the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, among others. Felice was a Loeb Fellow at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design and was awarded the Distinguished Alumna Award at Brooklyn College, CUNY and the Lennart Nilsson Award for Scientific Photography.

Felice founded the Image and Meaning workshops and conferences whose purpose is to develop new approaches to promoting the public understanding of science through visual expression.

She and her work have been profiled in the New York Times, Wired, LIFE Magazine, the Boston Globe, the Washington Post, the Chronicle of Higher Education, National Public Radio’s All Things Considered, Science Friday, the Christian Science Monitor and various European publications. She exhibits throughout the United States and in Europe. Her limited edition photographs are included in a number of corporate and private collections.

AWARDS: All selected entries are exhibited in the gallery and included in a full color exhibit catalog. Juror’s Choice receives a 20×35″ vinyl exhibit banner featuring their image. People’s Choice gains free entry into a future exhibit.

SALES: Darkroom offers free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of their exhibitions, subject to standard sizes. “Surrealism started out as a philosophical movement in the 1920s. The Manifesto, written by André Breton laid out the goals of the surrealist group which was comprised of writers, philosophers and artists. Freud was a huge influence on the movement with his practice of interpreting the meaning of dreams. That idea played out visually amongst the group which left us with rich visual oddities from artists such as Dali, Magritte, Ernst, Miro and Man Ray.

“I feel the surrealist artists impacted my own methods of creating, and encouraged me to look within to find a deeper significance with my art. Now I am looking for other photographers who have followed a similar path and others who have felt a kindred connection to the surrealist artists or movement.” –Lanie McCormick, Curator

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: All Photographic media is welcomed and artwork should reflect the influence of surrealism. Artwork that shows forethought as well as strong aesthetic and compositional elements will be given priority. Work should be created within the last two years.

ENTRY FEE: None. In lieu of an entry fee selected artists will be asked to bring a bottle of wine, or snack tray for the opening celebration. If you are shipping your work, you are welcome to send a $10 contribution.

My taste buds are aging well. I can still tell the difference between Parmesan, Romano and Asiago cheeses–even in bad grocery-store-powdered form. And, I have fallen newly in love with beets. Last year, 2011, the Haggus Society presented the 1st annual Edges & Curves, Nothing In Between exhibition which successfully challenged the myth that older artists have little to no edge.

This year’s theme “Close Your Eyes” will explore wedge issues presented in the public discourse via all channels of media consumption.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to any artist 40 years and older

MEDIA: 2D (no larger than 32″ x 44 inches), small 3D (no larger than 14″ x 10″ x 8″inches). They are considering opening up the exhibition to performance, music, spoken word/poetry. So, feel free to send those media as submissions, too.

DEADLINE: July 4, 2012

ENTRY FEE: $12.50 for up to 6 images for non-members. Submission fees are waived for Haggus Society members in good standing.

JUROR: Natalie Abrams’ work examines suspending moments in time; the physical and textural experience of those moments, the delicate beauty of our surroundings and the difficulty of preserving the present. An environmentalist, Abrams’ abstract landscapes were first exhibited at the R&F Gallery in the three person show “Not Seeing the Forest”.

Using a technique as fluid and unpredictable as nature itself, led to the development of her highly sculptural ribbon paintings; pieces which blur the line between painting and sculpture. The ribbon works have been exhibited in national exhibitions including the Third Annual Encaustic Invitational, as a highlighted artist at Ball State University with Encaustic Works 07, as well as the 2010 book “Encaustic & Beyond”.

Abrams’ latest work further explores humanity’s relationship to our surroundings in the form of sculptural landscapes and topography, and the mirrored societal relationships therein. Development of this work into freestanding installation works will be the focus of her upcoming Affiliate Artist Residency with the McColl Center.

I simply can’t handle french fried Onions.. They are simply too in-your-face. Go figure, I’ll eat stinky cheese till the goat come home, but you can keep the green bean casserole to your self. I miss mustard-based barbeque. I moved to Tennessee form South Carolina. And, although my new home has some unbelievable barbeque, I have to admit that I still miss a little mustard based pork now and then. I am tempted to submit to this next call just to have an excuse to pick up a little pork of the yellow variety. How about you?

“This exhibition investigates our relationship to the concept of time, the choices we make and the random, uncontrollable events that shape our lives. From the moment we begin our journey into the cacophony of the world – a series of decisions, choices and twists of fate guide us – often lurching or blissful and occasionally tragic. What have we chosen for ourselves? When has our hand been forced? Have random or serendipitous events changed our course? Have we triumphed? What have we lost? What have we remembered and forgotten?

“Time is a recurring thematic in artists’ works – witness the public response and fascination with Christian Marclay’s 24-hour montage The Clock. Exploring that inexorable passage via divergent points-of-view, media and imagery demands introspection and perspective. JUROR: William Moreno is a curator, writer and director of William Moreno Contemporary which mounts periodic exhibitions. He was most recently the Associate Director of ArtPadSF, a hotel-based art fair. William was the founding Executive Director of the Claremont Museum of Art and the director of The Mexican Museum, San Francisco.

He has been a featured panelist addressing topics ranging from the contemporary role of museums and the international art landscape at San Francisco’s Commonwealth Club, the American Institute of Architecture, Latino Art Now Conference, William Turner Gallery, ArtPadSF, Flagstop and others. He has appeared on KCET’s series California’s Gold as well as other media. William serves as board President of LACE (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions) and on the Advisory Board for the California Association of Museums.

SALES: All work will be considered for sale unless otherwise indicated on the entry form. Proceeds from work sold: 60% to the artist, 40% to OCCCA. Checks to the artists are processed within 10 days of the close of the show.

I am currently going through what my husband has dubbed the “Super Suzie” phase. It has a name because every time I take a few weeks off from working outside of my home office, I take on this Super-Woman-like persona that cooks and cleans and nests. CALL for ENTRIES: Natural/Constructed Spaces

The Painting Center, a gallery in the heart of Chelsea, announces a call for entries for its upcoming juried exhibition entitled Natural/Constructed Spaces, running from June 19th to July 14th, 2012. The exhibit will be accompanied by a printed catalog and will be widely publicized.

As artists, we are all compelled to create and look at images of the natural and man made worlds in which we live. Through these images we are able to express nostalgia for a simpler, more pristine world, bring attention to environmental degradation, or ponder the wonders and despair of today’s urban centers.

For Natural/Constructed Spaces, The Painting Center invites representational and abstract painters to submit work that considers all aspects– natural, constructed, deconstructed– of rural/urban/suburban environments in the 21st century.
