Verge Art Miami Beach

VERGE emerging art fair will soon announce an extraordinary list of programs for its third year Miami Beach fair, December 2-5, coinciding with Art Basel Miami Beach, including the Tomorrow Stars Exhibit and The Drawing Show Exhibit. VERGE is THE source for emerging art during ABMB Week, located two short blocks from ABMB and the newly-relocated Design / Miami.

*Editor’s Note: My information has come from Michael Workman of Workman Steinhauer Productions, the production company behind the verge art fairs; however, I know many of you would like duplicate online verification. Please note, you have to register to get the information. Registration does not mean you must enter, but the information is not readily available on their site unles you register.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists.

MEDIA CATEGORIES: Photography, Painting, Drawing, Video, Mixed-Media, Sculpture, Textiles/Fiber, New Media, Prints, Ceramics, Glass, Performance, Installation and other. *Editor’s Note: Clearly, to be considered for The Drawing Show, you must limit your media to Drawing; however, the Tomorrow Stars show seems to be open to all media.

DEADLINE: September 15, 2011

NOTIFICATION: Finalists will be announced after October 17, 2011.

ENTRY FEE: $60 for up to 4 entries. *Editor’s note: This is about twice the cost of most of the entry fees we publish; however, for some of you, Miami is a whole new market.

JUROR: To ensure a fair jurying process, jurors will remain anonymous until after the jury selections are announced. Separate juries will judge the Drawing Show and Tomorrow Stars at Verge: Miami Beach 2011.

SALES: Art Brooklyn will reserve a 25% fee on all sales.

I am not a fan of beer. I can stand to drink Red Stripe or Grolsch, but that’s pretty much my limit. My husband is a home brewer. Don’t you just love the contradiction? I have learned to love the smell of beer, but after 13 years, I still haven’t developed a taste for it. If you’re a beer lover, you have extra motivation to enter the next Call. POW Fest empowers women to find their voice and to share their stories through innovative and quality filmmaking.

ELIGIBILITY: Films submitted to the 2012 Portland Women’s Film Festival must be directed or co-directed by a woman. Filmmakers may submit as a General Filmmaker or Young Filmmaker (under 18).

Just the other day, I admitted my food stereotypes about Phoenix. I’ll continue today with Texan food stereotypes. I think steak or Tex-Mex. All things Mexican or Spanish, right? I never thought of chicken fried steak. Chicken fried steak is considered German, a derivative of Wiener Schnitzel, a veal steak deep-fried in a breadcrumb batter. In chicken fried steak, beef scraps are used and beaten into steak form. A milk-based cream gravy is almost always served with chicken fried steak too. Yes, folks…Welcome to Texas. CALL for ENTRIES: Naturalist Art Show

Hubbard Art & Naturalist Fest is a juried wildlife and nature art contest with $1000 in prizes. All 2D mediums accepted; artwork should depict either the Hubbard City Lakes (in Texas) themselves or a species native to the Central Texas area.

Fine art/select vendor spots for the Festival (including ecosport, fine art, select fine craft with an outdoors theme) are available as well – but not required to enter the art contest. The Hubbard Art & Naturalist Fest is held October 14-16, 2011.

ELIGIBILITY: The subject matter of the entries should be based on one of the following: a) the Hubbard City Lakes themselves which are located in Central Texas or b) species native to the Hubbard area, including flora, fauna, insect life, etc.

MEDIA:
All 2D mediums considered, and 3D works of small and modest size/weight will also be considered (i.e., under 100 pounds and/or three feet in any direction.) If you have any doubts, please email the show coordinator at hubbardartfest@gmail.com.

DEADLINE:
Entries should be in .jpg format, and should be submitted no later than July 1, 2011.

ENTRY FEE: One fee of $20 covers up to four entries.

AWARDS: All artwork will be considered for the top three prizes: first place, $500; second place, $350; third place, $150, plus honorable mentions at the judge’s discretion. And, all artwork that is listed as “for sale” and is based on the Hubbard City Lakes themselves will be considered for the Mayor’s Purchase Prize. The Mayor’s Purchase Prize will be awarded at the sole discretion of the Purchase Prize committee; if no suitable entry is entered, the Purchase Prize will be withheld.

I am the soup queen. I accidentally found out during a run of bad weather one winter during which we couldn’t make it to the grocery store that I am really good at making soup. I had a whole series of artwork happen because I accidentally put myself in a situation where I was trapped at home too. My point? Maybe life is just a series of accidents, and with any luck, maybe more of them will be happy than not. If you’ve accidentally (or puposefully) shot 10 seconds of good film, here’s your chance to put it to good use.

Check out this Call for Entries from The Soap Factory for Ten Second Film Festival. It is free to enter. You can email your entry. And your work could have an audience of thousands. What do you have to lose?

*Editor’s note: I have a soft spot for The Soap Factory. Clearly, they love what they do…hence the overwhelming amount of community and volunteer support they enjoy. Do we all wish The Soap Factory was in our city or town? Certainly. But never let geography be your crutch. The chances are good that there is a free-spirited, albeit struggling, arts organization in your hometown. Show them a little volunteer support, and the rest could be history.

CALL for ENTRIES: 10 Second Film Festival

There may still be snow on the ground in Minnesota. But, it’s time to think about summer already! The Soap Factory’s Ten Second Film Festival is seeking submissions for our fun, quirky, and sometimes irreverent film festival. The festival, which drew nearly 4000 eager movie-goers last year, is the film festival for both the amateur and immature; the talented and the unfortunate; the virtuoso and the accidental artist. Anyone can submit a Ten second film All photos of The Ten Second Film Festival taken by Sarah Nienaber and Christopher Selleck.

ELIGIBILITY: Anyone can enter.

MEDIA: Video / Film

DEADLINE: June 1, 2011

NOTIFICATION: Filmmakers will be notified of acceptance by June 20th. Accepted films will be screened on July 4 at The Soap Factory.

ENTRY FEE: There is no entry fee for up to 6 films.

JURY PROCESS: Email your films to: tensecond@soapfactory.org. All films submitted will be juried by curator Lillian Egner and a panel of trusted advisors. Films will be sorted into ten categories determined at the time of selection. On the night of the festival, prizes are awarded to the best films in each category. Winning films are determined by a panel of local celebrity judges and audience reaction. Past categories have included: What the hell am I looking at?, Dance Off, Moment of Zen, Mindless Violence, Best Documentary, Wait For It…, Most Disturbing, Kubrick Award, and Under the Influence.

HOW TO SUBMIT A FILM: Email your ten second film submissions to The Soap Factory at tensecond@soapfactory.org. Include ONE film per email (ie: if you have multiple submissions, send a separate email for each). The subject line of the email should be the film’s title.

Please include the following information in your email: Filmmaker’s name(s), Filmmaker’s current city of residence, Title of film, I heard about the film festival through, and I made this movie using.

A handful of you have found out that my family is musical. We sing in the car, in the shower, and in the kitchen, of course. My husband is programmed to sing the last song he heard on TV or radio…over and over until I call it to his attention. My son loves punk versions of holiday favorites. And well, what I sing in the kitchen is determined by what I’m cooking…Dean Martin’s That’s Amore during Italian prep, etc. For those of you that are musically inpired, here’s a great call:

Studio2Gallery and feature artist and juror, Brenda Ladd, are tuning up to celebrate the South by Southwest music scene in Austin, Texas with an Eye on Music.

Thousands of visitors come to Austin in March and music fills almost every street and corner downtown. Studio2Gallery is seeking visual artworks to offer tribute to musical artisans – to the music and the people who make it happen.

ELIGIBILITY: Emerging & established artists 18 years & older

MEDIA: All media including video

DEADLINE: Entries must be received by February 14, 2011.

NOTIFICATION: February 19, 2011

ENTRY FEE: $30.00 (Texas residents add an additional $2.48 for state sales tax) for up to 5 digital images, No charge for a 2nd View/digital image of 3 dimensional artworks.

SALES: All work must be available for sale. A 50% commission will be taken for work sold through the gallery.

JUROR: Brenda Ladd is a photo-journalism instructor at the University of Texas at Austin, and owner of Brenda Ladd Photography.

Ladd has been an instructor at the Rocky Mountain School of Photography and is a member of the Texas Photographic Society.

A photographer & photo-painting artist, Ladd applauds the heroes and heroines of the Music Community through her visual images. Exploring the passion of performance, the artist’s energy, and the enduring elements of emotion conveyed, Ladd’s interpretations capture the connection of the visual and musical moment. The images seek to remind us of the Power of Music in each of our lives and, ultimately, the impact music bestows on the world.

3 ALARM for YOU!

I love a good festival. I am going to Gatlinburg’s Annual Chili Cook Off this week and will stuff myself to the gills. Yum. I’m truly afraid to attend the Annual Ribfest (which also includes chicken wings)… I might not fit back into my car at the end. Think of all the festival food you could eat with these Calls for Entry.

Some folks love Art Festivals, and they can be an excellent opportunity for art sales if you know how to work it. Check out these Calls for Entry from the Celedon Fine Arts Festival, the Omaha Summer Arts Festival and the Monmouth Festival of the Arts. I don’t often post art festivals…so here’s three to make it up to those of you who love them!

CALL for ENTRIES: Feeling Festive

CELADON
Fine Arts Festival:

Artists are invited to apply to the three-day Celadon Fine Arts Festival, to compete for cash prizes totaling $3,000. The festival is produced by The Celadon Community Arts Trust Association and ARTworks, The Arts Council of Beaufort Port Royal & the Sea Islands. The goal of the May 20-22, 2011 juried show is to select and present the highest caliber of fine art and crafts to their knowledgeable and discriminating audience. The deadline to apply is March 1, 2011, and the application fee is $25. Please visit http://www.beaufortcountyarts.com/celadon.htm for show specifics, and for the online application. The festival venue is the beautiful Celadon Community on Ladys Island in Beaufort, SC. Artists will be surrounded by oak trees, ponds, and the architecture that is Celadon. OMAHA
Summer Arts Festival:

The mission of the Omaha Summer Arts Festival is to present a variety of high quality arts programs and exhibits in downtown Omaha for the general public to enjoy and appreciate. Application and jury fee must be submitted by midnight CST on Monday, January 10, 2011. The Omaha Summer Arts Festival is located in Downtown Omaha – Farnam Street from 10th to 15th Street. This location mixes the sophistication of the downtown Omaha skyline with the relaxing feel of the Gene Leahy park and lagoon. Enjoy trees, shade and waterfalls right in the middle of downtown Omaha. Approximately 135 artists will exhibit at the 2011 Summer Arts Festival. A total of 72 artists have been invited back from the 2010 show based on their onsite jury score. The remaining spaces will be filled by a jury panel that consists of up to four professionals with evaluating experience and one peer juror. For more information, visit their website!

MONMOUTH
Festival of the Arts:

The 41st Annual Monmouth Festival of the Arts, New Jersey’s largest art invitational, will take place April 9 through April 13, 2011 at Monmouth Reform Temple, 332 Hance Avenue, Tinton Falls. It begins with the Artists Reception on Saturday. The reception is a great opportunity to meet the artists, enjoy a catered cocktail party, and browse the works in all media by more than 200 artists. Visitors to the Opening Night Reception will also receive a ticket to attend other Festival activities, including artist demonstrations, children’s workshops, and evening series art lectures and music from Sunday through Wednesday. The application form plus a $20.00 non-refundable application fee for each medium made payable to MRT/MFA, must be received by the December 13, 2010 deadline.
