GRADUATION: Call for Submissions

Click Here to Subscribe to this Blog by Email! It is graduation time, and I’ve been receiving lots of requests from art grads and upcoming art grads about where to go next.  I am not a career counselor, but if you’re looking for shows and have had the privilege of building a large body of work your senior year…then it is time to find a show, or two, or three.

Where to begin?  When you are frantically searching for a show on Google, remember to look for “Call for Submissions.”  The use of “submissions” usually indicates no fee and a large number of submission allowed.  These committees and gallery directors are looking for a well-rounded glimpse into what you offer, not just the winner of a competion as in “Call for Entries.”

Look for areas within a day’s drive of you so that you are confident you can assist with hanging the show–only if asked–and show up for the opening of your big night.  Look for rolling deadlines.  If you’re interested in a gallery, look to see if they take submissions year ’round, and don’t procrastinate.

Here is a Call for Submissions from Space 237 to get you started:

Click Here for more information from Space 237!Space 237 welcomes artist submissions year round and will consider your work for the next year of exhibits. They ask that the artists be 18 yrs + and submit original art any media. Space 237 especially appreciates unusual, cutting edge artwork, but, because they use 2 galleries for their Spring & Fall exhibits, there is usually a nice mix of unique artwork along with high quality traditional & not-so-traditional.

Space 237 is  looking at submissions next for their annual fall show October 15, 2010 – January 8, 2011. Opening night will be Fri, Oct. 15, 7-10 pm.

Submission deadline: Submissions must be received by Friday, July 16, 2010.

Submissions may be mailed or dropped off in person. They will not be reviewed at the at the time of drop off, if they are delivered in person.
