My kitchen is sacred; all of them have been.  Studio space is sacred, all of them are.  I have had them in every size, and every quality –both kitchens & studios.  Now, my studio is attached to my kitchen, separated by a counter in my tiny new apartment.  I cannot create art outside of the view of my stove, nor create food outside of the view paint tubes & Mason jars of brushes.  It has been the most productive of marriages, compact, comfortable, safe.  This Call wants to know more about YOUR sacred space.  Take a look…

Sanctuary
from Gallery 263

Sanctuary is a place, a feeling, where harmony, beauty, and stillness are shielded and allowed to flourish. A sanctuary can lift us up and make us feel big.  Or, it can shrink us down and show us humility in the face of infinity. We find sanctuary in the presence of awesomeness. It posts up in supportive communities and makes itself known when the impossible becomes reality.” –from gallery263.com

NUTRITION

I have a food tattoo.  Not surprised, are you?  It wasn’t meant to be a food tattoo.  I spent a week in NYC while in the area for my grad school interviews.  So, I went to the Big Apple and decided the perfect souvenir would be to come home with a little apple.  Ridiculous, I know.  I’ve thought about expanding on the food theme, but I’d rather spend my money on food than tattoos, ha.  Plus, I’m a wimp when it comes to pain.  This next Call is interested on what’s on the body, not just tattoos.  Take a look…

I spent the majority of my life hating beets, but I was so very wrong.  They are my favorite color on the planet; that should have been my first hint.  The beautiful shade of purplish-red found in sugar beets was the first clue that they held an earthly luscious quality not to be missed.  Roasted or pickled, warmed or chilled, I can’t get enough of them now.  This next Call wants to know all you love about hue and saturation.  Let them see your best…

My son loves blueberries, and buying blueberries is a happy indulgence for me to supply for him.  I have been known to buy lots of blueberry-flavored foodstuffs, but I’m also an avid label reader.  I believe people have the right to know the actual identity of what we are eating.  And folks, blueberries are a hot mess in almost any form outside the actual blueberry.  Check out foodidentitytheft.com if you’re interested.  In the meantime, this next show is all about identity.  Check it out…

Art/Identity

Art is an extension of the self, a combination of flesh and soul that is enriched by a variety of experiences, loves, histories, and hopes. Within the criss-crossing of lines, the pooling of paint, the spectacle of performance, the mechanical memory of the photograph, and the interactivity of video, one can catch a momentary glimpse of essential characteristics of personhood. They invite you to submit work of all media that examines identity in all its forms—the personal, the social, the revolutionary, the imaginary.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists residing in the US.

MEDIA: 2D, 3D or Time Media.

NOTIFICATION: May 20, 2013

ENTRY FEE: $25 for one entry of up to 3, $40 for 2 entries (total of 6).

JUROR: A resident of Somerville, MA, Geoff Hargadon is a multimedia artist who has shown across the country. His current project, Cash for Your Warhol, has caused a stir all over the world by blurring the lines of fact and fiction, self and society, in an uncertain economic climate.

Susan Sills was born and raised in Chicago and moved to the Boston area in 1973.  After receiving a Masters in Architecture from Harvard, Sills began her career as an architect and designer. In the early 1990’s she returned to painting and combined her innovative spirit with her training and experience.  This led to an endlessly evocative body of multimedia work.  Her artistic vision exists “somewhere between the safe, structured environment of the world around us and the chaos of the textures within us all”.

You know what I haven’t eaten in years?
