hold the casserole

I simply can’t handle french fried Onions.. They are simply too in-your-face.  Go figure, I’ll eat stinky cheese till the goat come home, but you can keep the green bean casserole to your self.  (Although here’s a pretty good recipe.) Sometimes I’m okay with that sort of straight forwardness, sometimes I’m not.  This next Call is point blank about the benefits of this online competition, and I’m okay with that.  Investigate for yourself…

Check out the Call for Entries from the Light, Space & Time Gallery for their online NATURE competition. You know that I am not a huge fan of online competitions; however, I think of this as digital publication which is always a good thing. The entry fee is dirt cheap, and the value of inbound links to your website is priceless.  Take a look…

Dragées remind me of Las Vegas. You know… the little candy beads, often silver, that you see decorating cakes and cupcakes.  Dragées also remind me of a Martha Stewart show many moons ago when Miss Piggy was the guest star, and they made cookies decorated with “dra-geeeees,” as Miss Piggy pronounced it.  But, I digress.  This next call has nothing to do with Miss Piggy and everything to do with Vegas.  Take a look…

I now live closer to town, and therefore, closer to food–fast food.  It isn’t all evil.  I succumb to McDonald’s® fries on occasion, but I also like the chipotle chicken wrap.  Meatball subs from Subway® are an occasional indulgence, but their turkey with cucumbers is a regular.  Life is always about choices.  This next call is themed to encourage people to make a healthy choice as well.  Take a look at this cool idea…

A lack of time is the excuse for a lot of quickie meals in my house–from Manwich® to frozen “cardboard” pizza.  But a lack of time is also my excuse for splurging at the antipasti bar in my local grocery store.  It is a double standard, but who uses TOO MUCH time as an excuse for anything?  This next Call doesn’t have a lot of time left, but they’ll take all the time you have.  You’ll see what I mean…

CALL for ENTRIES:
Random Acts of Time

Learn more about the Orange County Center for Contmeporary Art - OCCCA!“This exhibition investigates our relationship to the concept of time, the choices we make and the random, uncontrollable events that shape our lives. From the moment we begin our journey into the cacophony of the world – a series of decisions, choices and twists of fate guide us – often lurching or blissful and occasionally tragic. What have we chosen for ourselves? When has our hand been forced? Have random or serendipitous events changed our course? Have we triumphed? What have we lost? What have we remembered and forgotten?

“Time is a recurring thematic in artists’ works – witness the public response and fascination with Christian Marclay’s 24-hour montage The Clock. Exploring that inexorable passage via divergent points-of-view, media and imagery demands introspection and perspective. This exhibition will investigate what binds or propels us, notions of conscious or unconscious experiences and the narratives we collect as we negotiate our lives.” –William Moreno, Juror

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists

MEDIA:  All media and new media will be considered. Artwork, performance, or installations with special instructions or equipment must be described in full and possibly installed by the artist. Special hardware requirements must be included with the accepted entries.

OPEN CALL: Natural/Constructed Spaces

I am currently going through what my husband has dubbed the “Super Suzie” phase.  It has a name because every time I take a few weeks off from working outside of my home office, I take on this Super-Woman-like persona that cooks and cleans and nests.  It doesn’t last long because I’m not particularly good at it.  Occasionally, it spins out of control and results in molded gelatin “delicacies”.  This next Call might be better way to for me (and you) to express our Natural vs. Constructed theories.  Trust me on this one…

As artists, we are all compelled to create and look at images of the natural and man made worlds in which we live.  Through these images we are able to express nostalgia for a simpler, more pristine world, bring attention to environmental degradation, or ponder the wonders and despair of today’s urban centers.

For Natural/Constructed Spaces, The Painting Center invites representational and abstract painters to submit work that considers all aspects– natural, constructed, deconstructed– of rural/urban/suburban environments in the 21st century.
