STOLEN ART: Get over it!

Click Here to Subscribe to this Blog by email!

Click Here to see more of the work in the Pieces of Me series!Have you ever had a piece of artwork stolen? Me too…more than once.  Within the past two weeks, “Sally,” part of a triptych called “Sue . Sally .  Sara .” was stolen off a gallery wall.

I received both a phone message and an email from the Director of the organization and the Director of the gallery–frought with professionalism and concern.  My response?  “Stuff happens,” and “Hey, I take it as a compliment…I’m theft-worthy.”

For me, the theft poses questions like…“What was wrong with the other pieces in the triptych”…not “How could this happen.”

Be theft worthy! As a gallery owner and then director for many years, please take my advice on this one.  Do not have a hysterical fit that reinforces the idea that all artists are crazy and irrational.

Yes, I understand that you may be attached to the artwork.  “Sally” is a part of my masthead at RLGibson.com, but you’ve got to let it go.  Galleries and their owners and directors do the best they can; do me a favor, and give them a break.  Most of them are insured.

Do you have a story of art theft and intrigue to share? Send me an email or leave a comment on this post.  Have Happy Holidays!

FEATURED ARTIST: Catherine Roach

Click here to subscribe to this blog by email!

Click here to see all the work of Catherine Roach!I have a treat for you today…

the work of Catherine Roach.

I love art.  My home and office are filled to the brim with the work of artists that I love.  And, while I have a significant appreciation for the talent it takes to produce realism, I prefer not to own it.

I want the artwork I own to inspire me to dream of what can be, not what already is.  Admittedly, that is my personal choice.

I am a fan of modern Romanticism in art and artists.  I own work that leads with the heart and confronts it in a cerebral way.  I like the idea of the gifted hero following inspired creativity and knowledge to produce genuinely special work that defies norms and expectations.

The work of Catherine Roach took me by surprise.

...and that's when I knew I was a goner.

I researched every piece of her work that I could find electronically.  By the time I had viewed it all, I felt like I had an intimate experience.

Roach’s work makes me sad a little, but I find myself smiling at the wit with which it is packaged.  I am aesthetically drawn to Roach’s frenzied sense of composition and use of color and then smacked by its raw, personal commentary.

The early worm gets gotten.

When I asked about her process, it all became a little clearer. Roach says, “I begin a piece by reading over the scribbled down sea of words from that day, and placing images for these statements in my head at first, jotting down ideas as I go. I work rapidly without restraint, not holding anything back, to some extent of a free write. I use a large variety of media when creating, from pens to watercolor, and acrylic to digital. Knowing I don’t ever have a limit, creating for myself and no one else is what drives me to a finish.”

Don't you feel trapped?

Learn How to Cook!I often ask artists what their favorite food is because I’m a foodie…and I am nosey that way.  This is a food-themed art blog–loosely speaking, but I rarely publish artists’ answers.

This time, I have to expose Catherine for what she is…a goldfish eater.  The comfort of cheese all wrapped up in a glowing, albeit tiny, smiling package.  Very telling, Ms. Roach, very telling.

...move on by Featured Artist Catherine Roach!

Catherine Roach is currently attending The New England Art Institute in Boston for Graphic Design, and approaching her final semester in January. And I must admit that I am concerned that she will always keep her work to herself like her own private little treasure.  I am bothered because I want to own the work of Catherine Roach.  And, I believe that is the highest compliment any viewer can give any artist.

I was walking and talking so fast by Featured Artist Catherine Roach!

I am a fan of taking medicine with a spoonful of sugar. Catherine, thank you for the sweet surprise.  Thank you for letting me publish just a little glimpse.

I am inspired.

Visit the Still Point Gallery! Those of you who know me as either an artist or a curator/gallery director know how much I love a theme.  I’ve done themes around everything from Underwear and Mad Science to the Seven Holy Virtues and Tire Tread.  Well, I’ve found a theme to love: Geometric Abstraction.

Here’s a show that has it all:  a great theme–geometry, a reasonable entry fee ($25), online entry, PayPal payment, an online exhibit, sales with a miniscule commission rate (20%), and the opportunity for a show in 2011.  You can’t ask for more.  It is like a zero calorie cheesecake…all you could ever want. As a result, I am doing something I rarely do.  Here is the prospectus is the show prospectus in its entirety:

Still Point Art Gallery invites submissions from emerging and established artists for its upcoming exhibition: Geometric Abstraction.

Visit the Still Point Art Gallery for Geometric Abstraction!“Geometry – squares, triangles, circles, ellipses, cones, cubes, and polygons … length, area, and volume. Geometry frames our world and shapes our world. It brings order, organization, balance, symmetry, and asymmetry to our surroundings. Geometry is used by carpenters and astronomers as well as theoretical mathematicians. The concept of geometry is so simple and appealing that even young children seem to intuitively draw squares and circles and rectangles. Yet the concept of geometry is so complex that mathematicians and physicists may spend years studying applications and theories of one tiny aspect of geometry.

“Then there is the artist. When an artist’s unique view .. of the world, of the self … incorporates geometric shapes or focuses on natural or man-made geometric shapes, the result may be an amazing display of shape and color. Geometric abstraction can be daring, imposing, powerful, stark, complex, bold, or rhythmic.”

November 15, 2009 – Submissions Open

January 25, 2010 – Submissions Close (Deadline)

February 8, 2010 – Notification of Selection

February 10 -April 6, 2010 – Exhibition

After closing as the featured exhibition on April 6, 2010, Geometric Abstraction will remain online through April 6, 2011.

Whatever way you choose, images should be saved in jpg format and resized to 72 dpi, less than 1.5 MB, with the maximum dimension of the image being no more (and preferably not much less) than 1000 pixels. Failing to resize your image will result in problems with uploading. The file name of your image should follow this convention – last name, title of work (perhaps abbreviated), and number (matching entry form number) [for example, SMITH_SUNNYDAY_3.jpg]. Do not include stray characters such as # or * in your file name. Doing so will prevent your file from uploading properly. If you choose to email images, please send them to director@stillpointartgallery.com. FEATURED ARTIST: Celine Eimann

Click Here to Subscribe to this Blog by email!

Celine Eimann is a Swiss-born artist who is now based in Sydney, Australia.

Illustration for Green Stone-Eater Monster by Celine EimannEimann studied fine arts in Switzerland and Visual Communication Design at Billy Blue College of Graphic Arts in Sydney.

As far as she can recall, Eimann always had a passion for painting, staining, coloring almost everything within the reach of her fingertips (which sometimes got her in trouble)!

More recently she also started writing and illustrating children stories, which will be soon available in English and in French.  And, it is the illustration (pictured to the left) that truly grabbed my attention.

Illustration for the Green Stone-Eater Monster by Celine EimannWhen I inquired further about this piece after tripping across it on Eimann’s site, I found that that there were actually an number of pieces for a children’s book that written and illustrated by Eimann called The Green Stone-Eater Monster.

While The Green Stone-Eater Monster has yet to be published, it was recently awarded first prize (in the picture book/graphic novel category) at the Chidren and Young Adult Writers and Illustrators conference in Brisbane, Australia.

Visit Celine Eimann's site to see her gallery of work!In a recent blog post, Eimann outlines her current project, “I am now working on 3 new different projects.  One of them being my second children book. And for this one I am actually stepping into the world of ‘little creatures’…

“I am researching and sketching how to make a fairy looking deliciously graceful and the forest mysteriously magical…I have a zillion images running in my head… I am trying new methods… I know it will come, it always does. Doesn’t it?”

I am excited to see what comes of Eimann’s newest projects and to buy a copy or two of The Green Stone-Eater Monster when it comes to print.  You can find Eimann all over the web.  In addition to Eimann’s web site, you can follow her on Twitter, find her on MySpace and Facebook…and don’t forget to check out her blog.  I look forward to seeing more of her work!

FEATURED ARTIST: Kara Jansson Kovacev

Click Here to see the iPhone drawings of Kara Jannson KovacevNew Media Art.  We do have to talk about it, eventually.  We’re talking about it today because of the iPhone drawings of Kara Jansson Kovacev.

I’m a fan of new media art.  I like the idea of expanding the context in which art is both created and experienced.  Some folks don’t like new media art for the same reasons your parents don’t like the music you listen to…they don’t get it or can’t dance to it.  I find most opponents of new media art are traditional media artists.  To those artists, I offer this old cliche…someone else’s success does not diminish your own accomplishments.  Or, get over it already.  Check out what other are saying about iPhone Drawings.

For those of you that read this blog for the art and not the art deadlines, here’s a wiki definition of new media art:

Click here to see the iPhone drawings of Kara Jannson KovacevNew media art is a genre that encompasses artworks created with new media technologies, including digital art, computer graphics, computer animation, virtual art, Internet art, interactive art technologies, computer robotics, and art as biotechnology. The term differentiates itself by its resulting cultural objects and social events, which can be seen in opposition to those deriving from old visual arts (i.e. traditional painting, sculpture, etc.)

This concern with medium is a key feature of much contemporary art and indeed many art schools and major Universities now offer majors in “New Genres” or “New Media”.  New Media Art often involves interaction between artist and observer.  New Media concerns are often derived from the telecommunications, mass media and digital modes of delivery the artworks involve, with practices ranging from conceptual to virtual art, performance to installation.

Click here to see the iPhone Drawings of Kara Jannson Kovacev! The “New” in New Media Art comes with it’s own set of challenges, but mainly the issues of exhibition, sales, and archiving.  Galleries are opening up to new media as demand grows.  Sales always follow demand.  And archiving?  Well, I don’t subscribe to the theory that all art should be permanent.  I realize curators roll their eyes everytime I utter that sentence, but just because you can eat a Peep doesn’t make art made of it less valid.  End of sermon.

Kara Jansson Kovachev is originally from Cape Cod, MA and has lived and shown her work in various locations around New York City since 1996.  Kovachev also paints, collages, makes puppets and particpates in toy theatre.  Her toy theater piece “The Renovation”was shown at the Great Small Works 8th International Toy Theater Festival and Temporary Toy Theater Museum at St. Ann’s Warehouse.  Visit her site www.CloudBuilder.com today.

Visit the ART of Cooking! One of the most valuable assets to a cook is the money to buy groceries, but money won’t help if you don’t have anywhere to cook. State art agencies often provide both funding and the opportunities to use it.  I believe that state art agencies are under used by artists, and as a result, are often among the first to lose their funding during budget cuts.
