wdydwyd? is mounting an exhibition at Burning Man 2010 — an event that brings over 50,000 people to a prehistoric lake bed for one of the world’s largest and most avant-garde art festivals.

Since 2004, over 10,000 people have answered, “wdydwyd?” from groups as diverse as Harvard Business School, Google & Twitter employees, Echoing Green Foundation, Kellogg Foundation Fellows, Burners as well as notable figures such as Steve Case, the founder of AOL, and Gloria Steinem, founder of Ms. Magazine.

BAY AREA CALL

Do you have any idea how hard it is to cleverly sneak in a food reference in every post? I really try to make a solid tie in, but it is harder than you might think. I am inspired by silly puns and great pictures and phenomenal food, but I am stumped today…so you’ll just have to forgive the cliche today.

I also try to cater my posts to the national and international variety; however, sometimes I can be swayed to post a regional call. I was swayed to post this Call for Entries, sponsored in part by the San Francisco Arts Commission, because I have a soft spot for photography and the region is pretty large and SFAC typically does a great job of stepping outside its own region to be a part of the national and international community. So, even if you’re not from the bay area, check out the the San Francisco Arts Commission’s other opportunities!

THE PROGRAM: ART AT CITY HALL
The San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery (SFAC Gallery) and PhotoAlliance invite you to submit images of your work to be considered for the exhibition Night/Light. The San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery’s Art at City Hall program began in 1996 with the goal of bringing artwork with a social conscience into the seat of government. Fourteen years later, Art at City Hall has matured into a premiere program for the exhibition of photography by local, national and international artists.

THE EXHIBITION: Night/Light: Bay Area Photographers Take Aim After Dark

Artists are invited to submit works that explore what happens after sunset and before sunrise. Nighttime images of interest will range from landscapes to portraits, from photodocumentary essays to fantastical narratives. They are looking for technical proficiency, creative innovation, and a wide variety of subject matter.

THE LOCATION

The City Hall ground floor exhibition space can accommodate up to 100 photographs. The jury will choose between three and ten images from each selected artist. Please do not submit less than three images. There will be no stipend for selected artists.

Please be conscious of the fact that the exhibition space at City Hall is a multi-use area that acts as a busy intersection for City employees, tourists, children and arts patrons. It is both a municipal cross roads and a place where individual concerns may be expressed. Please note that exhibited works will not be insured.

SUBMISSION PROCEDURES

Eligibility: All living artists over the age of 18 who are residents of the greater San Francisco Bay Area are eligible to apply. All work should have been completed in the past five years. (San Francisco Bay Area counties include: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano and Sonoma Counties)

Entry Fee: No entry fee required

Medium, Framing, Delivery: All two-dimensional works using any photographic process including digital and/or analog are eligible for exhibition. All chosen works should be delivered to the Gallery framed behind glass or plexi. All selected artists need to be able to deliver and pick up their work from San Francisco City Hall on designated installation and de-installation dates. Works that need to be shipped will not be considered.

Portfolio: Only digital submissions will be accepted. Submit three to ten images. Files should be on a CD in JPEG format. Image size should be no larger than 2MB or 8 inches in one dimension with a resolution of 150dpi.
Files should be titled: Lastname_Firstname_imagenumber.jpg

Please submit an accompanying inventory sheet with the image number, your name, title, date, medium and unframed dimensions of each piece. You may also include a one-page statement about the work and a one-page bio.

Summer is the season for hope and possibilities folks… everyone thinks Spring is the hot season with all the chocolate eggs and marshmallow bunnies and newly budding trees.

But, Summer is a hot time for galleries looking for Exhibit proposals for their upcoming season. I will be publishing a few of these calls over the next few months…so don’t delay.

Here is a great Call for Proposals from the Crary Art Gallery in Warren, Pennslyvania.

The Crary Art Gallery reviews exhibition proposals twice each year. Postmark deadlines for submission are March 10 and September 10, and exhibitions are typically scheduled a year or more in advance. Exhibitions last one month.

The Gallery will provide an opening reception, printing and mailing of post cards, local publicity, and gallery staff during open hours. The Gallery is alarmed.

Exhibitors are responsible for their own delivery and pickup.

The exhibitions committee will consider solo shows, group or tandem shows, and curated exhibitions.

Applicants/curators should send a statement about the proposed exhibition, relevant resume(s), twenty digital images on cd, and a self addressed stamped envelope to the address listed below.

The Crary Art Gallery includes seven gallery rooms with about 375 lineal feet available for exhibitions.

Generally, the main gallery, courtyard sculpture gallery, and two other rooms may be considered for proposed temporary exhibitions.

The space can range from 125 feet to about 215 feet with moveable walls.

BOOK COVER ART: Call for Entries

I believe Art is Food for the Soul…which is one of the many reasons that I prattle on about food so much. Well, I also really like food. Good food inspires one to create good meals. So maybe it IS all cyclical.

Cover Art for The Unfastened Heart by Lane von Herzen

You are invited to participate in an open competition to provide the book cover art for the re-publication of Lane von Herzen‘s novel, The Unfastened Heart.

The winner of this competition will be awarded The Icon Prize, will receive $1500 in prize money, and will have his or her artwork appear on the book cover. The terms and conditions of this competition are as follows:

REFER TO NOVEL: Submit your original artwork created in response to Lane von Herzen’s novel, The Unfastened Heart. Each submission should include a brief statement about the section of the novel to which your art speaks.

MEDIA TYPE AND SIZE: You may enter for consideration paintings, photographs, graphic art, collage art, and other visual media by submitting a digital photograph (in JPG or JPEG format) of the work through the link at the bottom of this page. You should submit images saved with maximum quality compression with a long dimension of at least 1000 pixels at 72 or 300 dpi. Please keep the file size under 2 MB.

NUMBER OF ENTRIES: You may submit more than one entry. All submissions are subject to the format guidelines and limits set forth in this document.

QUALIFIED ENTRIES: No submissions will be considered if they are defamatory, abusive, obscene, profane or otherwise offensive or in poor taste. Anyone who participates in the competition in a disrespectful or unlawful manner, including making hostile or negative comments related to age, disability, race, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, or gender identity, will be disqualified. Posting of the work is at the discretion of the administrators.

PRIZE: The judging staff will select the winning submission. The winner will be awarded the 2010 Icon Prize and a cash award of $1500, and the winner’s submission will be used for the cover art for the re-publication of The Unfastened Heart.

AGREEMENT: By submitting your work to this competition, you are representing and agreeing as follows: (i) your submission is your own original artwork and, at the time of your submission, you have all ownership rights in the submission; (ii) you authorize us to publish your submission on the author’s blogsite and website without restriction or compensation; and (iii) if you are selected as the winner, you will accept The Icon Prize and the $1500 award in full compensation for all right, title and interest in any and all visual reproductions of your original work for all purposes related to the novel and The Icon Prize. The artist retains ownership of the original work, and is free to sell the original work as he/she wishes.

DEADLINE: Art will be accepted through December 31, 2010. Please note that the administrators encourage early entries, as another prize category may be added to reflect higher numbers of submissions.

NOTIFICATION: Finalists will be notified via e-mail by January 31, 2011. Following this date, fine arts finalists who have not incorporated graphic design into their work (a design including title and author of the book) may be paired with graphic designers in order to present the book covers in their print-ready format for the final round of judging. The administrators may elect to hold a series of gallery events to promote the finalists’ work prior to the judging of the winner, with the intent of bringing notice to the finalists as artists deserving of ongoing recognition of their artistic endeavors. The winner of The Icon Prize will be announced no earlier than June 1, 2011 and no later than December 31, 2011. The winning artist will be notified via e-mail.

Any questions or disputes related to the terms, conditions or participation in this competition shall be resolved by the author and publisher in their absolute discretion.

This competition is being organized to support and nurture the work and careers of other artists who gather together around a common literary work.

If your submission does not win the competition but you nevertheless wish to make your original work available for sale, the author may choose to assist you by creating gallery showings of your work, either online or otherwise, at a price you select, with the profit realized solely by you.

If you wish, the author and publisher may also elect, in their sole discretion, to include your submission in a “gallery” of submissions interior to the pages of the book, allowing the book’s readers to see your work, read a brief biography about you, and link to websites displaying more of your work.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: All Hung Art Show

When I moved to the Great Smoky Mountains a few years ago, my family made a commitment to becoming more attuned to our surroundings and spending more time in the Great Outdoors. My family has tried gardening–no easy feat on the side of a mountain–as well as hiking, white water rafting and more. Why not bike riding? This Call for Entries is a great resume builder because it is a non-juried (all hung) show and promotes Bikes for the World too!

An Art Show Inspired by Bicycles

“Biketastic” is an art show for all mediums inspired by bicycles! This show is meant to feature art that represents the many nuances of bike culture; from bikes for commuting, racing and pleasure rides to those who ride them for economic, and environmental reasons.

The Soundry’s proximity to the Washington & Old Dominion Trail gives the area a lot of “bike traffic.” As a result, they see first hand what an important role biking plays in many people’s lives. Smartly enought…they have also noticed that bike enthusiasts like bike related art!

This show is open to all mediums and will bring with it many bike-centered events from organized “rides” to film screenings, and a fashion show. The opening of the arts show will benefit Bikes for the World!

Commit to Submit Form Here! “Biketastic” is unjuried. The submission fee is $20 and artists may submit up to 3 pieces. All work must be for sale and ready to hang or display.

The Gallery at the Soundry

The gallery at The Soundry occupies about one quarter of their total space. It’s a rough-around-the-edges kind of space with good lighting and comfortable seating.

They hang their member’s artwork in this area and offer it for sale. This is the place to go in Vienna, Virginia if you’re looking for work from emerging artists, or if you just want to kick back, sip a latte, and take in some new sights.

The artwork in the gallery changes regularly, and a large portion of their gallery space is set aside for installation works.

The garage atmosphere and undergound, working-studio feel give visitors an experience they’re guaranteed not to find anywhere in the region.

RETRO ART CONTEST: Spirograph

I love the sort of fun whimsy of the design of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. And as a parent, I love the variety of opportunities that were provided in that era to sneak the principles of design, color and competition into your children’s lives through play. Just add a Twinkie, and this next call for art entries from Sound Feelings Publishing would be a perfect combination or whimsy and design!

Can you Design Something better than this?

Sound Feelings Publishing is inviting submissions of beautiful designs to be Included in a Brand New Multi-Color Instruction Booklet for the Famous Spirograph Toy from the 1960s.

Using your 1967-1970 Kenner Spirograph toy (not Spirograph Plus or any other variant) and using a new Spirograph Multicolor Pen from Sound Feelings Publishing, create one or more BRAND NEW DESIGNS and submit them to Sound Feelings for their consideration to be included in their new, upcoming “Spirograph Multicolor Instruction Booklet.”

The winners will receive the prize money and will also have their names listed by their design (unless you prefer not to).

How Would These Designs be Different?

The original Spirograph incorporated pens that had four colors, black, blue, red and green.

Sound Feelings is seeking submissions of new designs that use the new Spirograph Multicolor Pen.

These new pens contain the original four colors: black, blue, red and green.

But the new pen ALSO includes fun and creative rainbow colors: yellow, light blue, pink, purple, brown, and orange — ten colors in one pen!

The Spirograph Multicolor Pen contains 10 ballpoint cartridges within one large barrel.

The ballpoint pen tips of the cartridges are the EXACT size of the original pen tips that came with your 1960s Spirograph. (Modern ballpoint pens have larger size tips that will not fit through the holes of the Spirograph gears.)

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: October 5, 2010

RULES:

1. Use a Spirograph multicolor pen (pictured right at $5.99) to a create brand new design on your Spirograph

2. Artwork created with gel tip, rollerball or felt tip pens will NOT be accepted.

3. Use high-quality paper so that the pen does not make any holes or rough spots. The paper color will usually be white, but if your design requires paper of a different color, then that will be completely acceptable.

4. Use one or more of the colors in the multicolor pen. (You may use as many colors as you want in your design, but generally, combining a few well-matched colors well will look better than using all ten colors!) Also, you may just want to use the original black, blue, red or green colors in your design and that would be completely fine.

5. Scan your completed design at 300 dpi or higher and save in .jpg format, at the highest quality. If you don’t have a scanner, you can mail the original to us and we will scan it and return your original to you.

6. Create instructions that follow the same format as the original instruction booklet so others may re-create your design. This includes displaying the ring number, the wheel number, the hole and the color of pen, and the reference starting point. Please see the sample of the original instruction booklet to guide you.

7. You agree that if you become one of their winners, you relinquish complete ownership and copyright of your design to Sound Feelings Publishing.

8. You may submit more than once.

9. Prizes will be based on existing submissions. If there are not enough contest art entries AND if the standards of the entries are not high enough then some of the prizes will not be awarded.

10. They will ONLY publish the winning entries. They will not publish your design unless they pay you for it!

11. Winners will be chosen within 60 days of the submission deadline and will be paid immediately thereafter.

There comes a point when you have to suck it up and submit your art portfolio for review…It is often how you get a solo show.

Sure, your friend that works at the local coffee shop may get you an exclusive show to be enjoyed by those standing in line for their morning java, but is that really the height of your artistic goals? Liquitex Artist of the Month Program is aimed at providing valuable Internet exposure for artists working primarily in acrylic paint. Each month one artist will be selected and featured on the Liquitex web site and Liquitex Facebook page. The work will be selected by a jury from entries received up to the last day of that month. Those entries not selected will be considered during following months. Slides can not be returned as this is an ongoing program.

HOW TO ENTER:

1. There is no entry fee.

I love portraiture. Portraiture is yummy…often decadent–like a bowl of exotic chocolate truffles.

Some of my favorite portraitists’ work span the gamut of possibilities from the soulful portraits by Paul Murray of mountain folk still living a life most people don’t dream still exists to the utterly surreal portraiture of Christian Rex Van Minnen to the slightly disturbed clowns of Jerry Portelli. My own work has often centered around “self as other.” Self-portraiture–whether literal or not–is a soul-searching, profound experience.

Here is a great call for self-portraiture called “Self Searching” brought to you by The Vermont Photography Workplace and PhotoPlace Gallery. You may remember a previous call for Photo Abstraction from PhotoPlace that we posted during Photography Week.

Self Searching: The Art of Self-Portraiture

Within the photographic genre of self-portraiture, some of the most probing, surprising, and thoughtful images have been made in the history of the medium.

For Self-Searching, they seek self-portraits that go beyond surface appearance to comment on the hopes, dreams, fears, and identities of the individuals pictured.

Aline Smithson will choose forty photos for exhibition at PhotoPlace Gallery in Middlebury, Vermont.

She will select an addiitonal thirty-five images for inclusion in the “On-Line Gallery Annex.”

All seventy-five photographs will be reproduced in a full-color exhibiiton catalogue that will be available for purchase. They offer free matting and framing for accepted photographs that fit their pre-cut mat sizes for the duration of the exhibition.

After a career as a New York Fashion Editor and working along side the greats of fashion photography, Aline Smithson discovered the family Rolleiflex and never looked back.

Now represented by galleries across the country and published throughout the world, Aline continues to create her award-winning photography with humor, compassion, and a 50-year-old camera.

Her work has been featured in numerous publications including the PDN Photo Annual, Communication Arts Photo Annual, Eyemazing, Artworks, Shots, Pozytyw, and Silvershotz magazines. She has exhibited widely including solo shows at the Griffin Museum of Photography, the Oswald Gallery, and Wallspace Gallery in Seattle.

Aline has been the Gallery Editor for Light Leaks Magazine, writes and edits the blog, Lenscratch, and has been curating exhibitions for a number of galleries and on-line magazines.

Submission Instructions:

Along with the completed application form, please submit your work via e-mail or by sending them a CD with your files.

Digital Files: Theyonly accept digital files. All digital images should be provided as jpgs only, 72 ppi, image width not to exceed 1024 pixels on the longest side. Files should be titled as follows: LastName_FirstName_1Title.jpg The number should correspond with the number on the application form.

E-mail digital files and application form information to photos@vtphotoworkplace.com or send CD with your images (not DVD), along with application form. Include SASE for return of CD, if desired. Submission Fee: Non-refundable $25 for the first 5 prints or digital images, $6 for each additional image. Please make checks payable to Vermont Photography Workplace. Credit card or PayPal payments may be made using the link at the bottom of the application form. Applicants must be 18 or over. Yes, they DO accept international applications. Acceptance Notification: Artists will be notified of accepted work via e-mail approximately one week after the deadline. If selected, artists will be sent instructions for submitting work for exhibition.

All accepted exhibition prints should be on paper, sized to be matted to fit in an 11 x 14 or 16 x 20 frame unless another format is approved by the Gallery.

Sales: If accepted, artists may choose to offer their work for sale. The VPW retains 40% of the sale price, as well as 6% Vermont sales tax. Photographs accepted for other VPW exhibitions are not eligible for re-submission for one year.

Use Rights: Artists whose submissions are accepted for exhibition grant the VPW the right to use their images for the purpose of marketing the exhibition, marketing related programs, and subsequent display as thumbnails on the VPW’s website, unless indicated otherwise.
