CALL for ENTRIES: New York Photo Show

Newer isn’t always better. I have wooden spoons and cookie sheets in my kitchen whose original material compositions are virtually undetectable.  Sometimes you stick with what you love, but sometimes folks come along regardless of age and instantly recognize the value of something that has worked for someone else forever…like my husband’s second hand flour sifter.  Discover an oldie (but goodie) of your own with this show…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Smith Township Arts Council for the 31st Annual Juried Photography Exhibition.  This year the theme is alternative processes or contemporary use of historical process, and it is juried by Joy Goldkind.  Maybe it is time to break out the pinhole camera again…

Download the prospectus!ABOUT THE JUROR:  Joy Goldkind was 50 years old before she took her first photography class, though her back-ground was always based in the fine arts. De-spite an unusually late start, Goldkind’s career as a fine arts photographer has progressed rather rapidly.

Her photographs of nude danc-ers, geishas, drag queens, ballerinas, circus per-formers, etc. have not gone unnoticed. Some-times inspired from a fantasy world, the use of double exposures and slow shutter speeds help Joy to change what is true and expected into a more surrealistic scene. The old world beauty and quality they possess is in no doubt influ-enced by a deep interest in art history.

With the use of the historic Bromoil process as a tool to express her fine art portraits, Joy adds a layer of mystery to her photographs. Very popular in the early 1900’s, the Bromoil process was favored by pictorial photographers who used it to add a more artistic rendering to their work. Each piece is individually inked by hand, therefore no two prints are identical.

CANDIED LECTURE

It has been over a week since I’ve stood on my soapbox and lectured about the advantages of Art Publication.  You’ve missed it…haven’t you?  Okay, Okay…if you insist, I will take candy from a baby.  Here goes:   Art Publication is great for your art career.  Most exposure is good exposure.  There, that’s the short version.

Fraction Magazine has an open-call for submissions for future issues as well as their One Picture Look feature that began in May 2010.  Fraction Magazine is an online photography magazine and photographic review.

ART PUBLICATION: Fraction Magazine Open Call

Visit Fraction Magazine online!Fraction Magazine was started in a little coffee shop in Albuquerque, New Mexico in March of 2008 by Joshua Spees and David Bram.  In 2009, Josh got married, moved to the East Coast, and is now pursuing other photographic avenues.

Today, Fraction Magazine is edited and curated by David, and often includes guest curators and writers such as Melanie McWhorter, Mary Goodwin and Larissa Leclair.

One Picture Look is a new feature (May 2010) to Fraction Magazine.

Fraction Magazine Issue 4The idea is to bring attention to the amazing work that is either found on Flickr within the Fraction Magazine Flickr Group or the work that is submitted directly to Fraction Magazine.  The idea is that one photograph, will make you want to look at more.

So if you have one picture, that they just have to see, please visit the submissions page or add it to the flickr group.

The One Picture Look page will be promoted just like the rest of the magazine and will be updated every couple of weeks.

To submit your photographs for the next issue of Fraction Magazine, please send a link to your site and tell them the specific portfolio or body of work to look at.  Please remember to put “submission” in the subject line of your email.

Due to the large number of submissions, they will not look at emails with attachments.  Send your link to fractionsubmissions@gmail.com .

I am a night owl…I’m just wired that way.  In a perfect world, I would wake up around noon and go to bed at 4 a.m.  Unfortunately, I like night-time snacking too.  Lately it is an irrational love of Cheetos and chocolate…but not together, I promise…although, hmmmm.  Maybe the cure to my night-time snacking is to spend my nights taking photographs instead.

SHOW ALREADY!

I spend a lot of time answering artists’ excuses about why they don’t enter shows or put their work out there.  I have heard them all, and some of them are legitimate.

With the accessibility of digital cameras, photography has taken a hard hit in the retail arena.  Many consumers no longer see the value in purchasing photos that they believe they “can take themselves.”  Please don’t write to me about all the things wrong with that argument…I get it.

As a result of that sentiment, many emerging photographers have to be very savvy with how and where they choose to submit work.  The cost of entry fees, packaging, matting and framing add up fast.  Here’s a great Call for Entries from Vermont Photo Space Gallery that takes these concerns to heart and offers free matting and framing.  Take a look…

CALL FOR ENTRIES: Managed Landscapes

The touch of man on the natural landscape is all around us. From shimmering cityscapes and rural farms to strip mines and garbage dumps. Let’s see images that show the touch of man, light or heavy, on the earth around us.

Learn more about the Vermont Photo Space Gallery!“Contemporary landscape photography’s insights and observations reach far beyond the natural environment. A close examination of the land will often reveal more about ourselves  as individuals, communities, and society at large.” — Thomas Bachand

Up to 44 photographs will be chosen by juror Thomas Bachand  for exhibition at the Vermont Photo Space Gallery, on our website and in a
full color catalog available to the public for purchase.

JUROR:  Thomas Bachand has been a professional photographer for over a decade, working in both traditional and digital mediums. His photography has appeared in magazines, advertisements, brochures, and textbooks – both in print and on the web. He writes on digital imaging issues for professional trade publications and lecturers on photography and technology issues.

Tom is the author of  Lake Tahoe: A Fragile Beauty. In addition to private collections, his photography can be found in the Bancroft Library and the California Historical Society.

Avalanche fence. Hwy 1. Big Sur, California by Thomas BachandThomas Bachand’s photography is a consideration of the land and the competing visions that inform our interaction with the world at large. Core to the work is its accessibility to the viewer. The use of color and a documentary style allow for an open and immediate connection to the subject.

By embracing a historical perspective, the photography captures a sense of honesty characteristic of the medium’s early pioneers. Whether creating a single, evocative image inviting reflection or a series conveying a sense of time and place, Bachand’s exploration includes the role of storyteller.

He seeks a convergence of the ordinary – extraordinary only in so much as it is revealing, offering both possibility and contemplation.

BAY AREA CALL

Do you have any idea how hard it is to cleverly sneak in a food reference in every post?  I really try to make a solid tie in, but it is harder than you might think.  I am inspired by silly puns and great pictures and phenomenal food, but I am stumped today…so you’ll just have to forgive the cliche today.

I also try to cater my posts to the national and international variety; however, sometimes I can be swayed to post a regional call.  I was swayed to post this Call for Entries, sponsored in part by the San Francisco Arts Commission, because I have a soft spot for photography and the region is pretty large and SFAC typically does a great job of stepping outside its own region to be a part of the national and international community.  So, even if you’re not from the bay area, check out the the San Francisco Arts Commission’s other opportunities!

Click to Subscribe to ArtAndArtDeadlines.com by Email!I love portraiture.  Portraiture is yummy…often decadent–like a bowl of exotic chocolate truffles.

Some of my favorite portraitists’ work span the gamut of possibilities from the soulful portraits by Paul Murray of mountain folk still living a life most people don’t dream still exists to the utterly surreal portraiture of Christian Rex Van Minnen to the slightly disturbed clowns of Jerry Portelli.  My own work has often centered around “self as other.”  Self-portraiture–whether literal or not–is a soul-searching, profound experience.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: Low Tech Photo Show

Click to Subscribe to ArtAndArtDeadlines.com by Email! You know I have a sugary-soft spot for photography (and photographers as it turns out), but more than my love for the technical quality of the image is my love for the complexity of results available with older technology.

As artists, many of us have been very concerned about the future of photography due to the inexpensive availability of digital cameras…

Who knew digital cameras would create a whole new audience for the classics like Polaroid and pinhole?
