Some people dance when they cook.  Some FOOD dances…remember the popcorn box from the movie screens of yesterday?  Me, I sing.  I have to fight back the sound of my father singing Hey Good Lookin’, Whatcha got Cookin’?  everytime I turn on a stove burner.  But this next Call for Entry could benefit from that inspiration.

CALL for ENTRIES:  Dance with Me

The Pop Revolution Gallery is excited to announce Dance with Me, a juried exhibition open to artists working in all mediums.

Download the Dance with Me Prospectus!The theme for this exhibit is the Art of Dance. For inspiration, they divided this broader theme down into three categories: Romantic (i.e. The Butler by Jack Vettriano), Expressive (i.e. The Dance by Matisse) and Trained/Studio (i.e. dance portraits by Edgar Degas). These are just offered as assistance, so feel free to explore your own dance musings.

ELIGIBILITY:  The exhibition is open to artists 18 years or older.  All work must be original work.  Students must not present work for consideration if assisted in any way in arrangement or execution.  Artists accepted for the exhibition will be asked for an artist bio for display purposes.

Lacing Up by Juror Carol MacConnellJUROR: Carol MacConnell creates diverse oil paintings in an array of vivid colors and composition.  Her paintings draw the viewer though various emotions from playful and enchanting to serene and peaceful.

Carol is a native of Cincinnati, OH.  She received a Bachelor of Fine Art from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and has continued her study of painting with internationally known artists, Quang Ho, Zhaoming Wu, Carolyn Anderson and C.W. Mundy.  Her work has received numerous awards and is part of private and corporate collections throughout the United States and Europe.

ABOUT THE GALLERY: Pop Revolution Gallery is a cutting edge art gallery located in Historic Downtown Mason Ohio, which opened in the fall of 2008.  Pop Revolution specializes in art exhibitions from local artists focusing on the powerful message of art and modern society.

JURORS:  John Lopez, Metal Sculpture Artist.  Sculptor John Lopez was born and raised in Western SD.  His western & rodeo theme bronzes have been well received & have sold all over the country from CA to NY.  For the past 10 years, John has been working on The City of Presidents project in Rapid City SD, creating bronze sculptures of the presidents. In the midst of a successful career in bronze sculpting, Lopez discovered scrap iron sculpting. See Blonde pictured above right.

James Van Nuys, a realist painter & sculptor, is one of the finest interpreters of the SD landscape.  Van Nuys was born in Whittier, CA and has lived intermittently in Rapid City,SD most of his life. He attended Wilmington College, graduating with a double major in art & music. Shawn Wilson, owner of the new Shaviq Gallery, designs beautifully unique jewelry consisting of natural stone, repurposed wire, bright colors of glass, broken jewelry, old buttons, dead watches, even tea bag tags.

People are often intrigued by my refrigerator …they always want a glimpse inside.  I am equally fascinated by the food preferences of other foodies, but I would never ask to see inside their cupboards or refrigerators.  That would be like asking a stranger on the sidewalk to strip naked.  You don’t need to know that I store raw meats above vegetables, that I secretly love sardines in mustard sauce and don’t make my own marinara.  This next Call will help you mind your own business …wink, wink, nod, nod.

It will come as no surprise that this Call for Entries from Vermont Photo Space Gallery called Human Artifact conjures images cabinets full of Thai Sweet Chili Sauce and exotic spices crammed into food-splattered cabines for me.  But I trust that your human artifacts will prove far more interesting than what’s for dinner.  Don’t forget Vermont Photo Space offers free framing & matting on accepted entries!

The photographic documentation of personal object is as old as the medium itself and it has become a contemporary obsession for some.  Roger Ballen, Eugene Richards, William Eggleston, Takashi Homma and Juror, Dave Jordano are among the ranks of photographers documenting human artifact.  The subject matter is a collision of cultural anthropology, pop culture, domesticity, documentary, realism and perhaps sentimentality.  By photographically documenting personal relic we prove the universality of the personal, we find connections and we share intimacies.

House with Lawn Ornaments by Juror Dave JordanoJUROR:  Dave Jordano received a BFA in Photography from the College of Creative Studies in 1974.   Since 1977 he has been working as a professional commercial Photographer from his studio in Chicago, Illinois.  It is his fine art imagery that will compel you to submit your work for jury into “Human Artifact.” 

Jordano has been recording cultural and societal identities extensively through Fellowship and as Curator’s Choice (Houston Center for Photography), Critical Mass finalist, Wright State University sponsorship recipient, and Chicago Cultural Center exhibitor. 

Twice published, his work is also found in private, corporate and museum collections, including in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, and the Mary & Leigh Block Museum of Art in Evanston, Illinois.  Jordano continues an extensive investment into the documentary series “Prairieland”, focusing on rural Illinois.

Ownership: All submitted photos must have been taken by the photographer making the entry.

If you are a parent or legal guardian submitting for a minor, please make it clear on the submission form.

Digital Submissions: All submissions must be made by digital files through:

1. Upload on VermontPhotoSpace.com or

2. Sent via email to submissions@VermontPhotoSpace.com. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it along with an application form. There is a $5.00 surcharge for email entries.

3. Images should be as large as possible but no larger than 1280 pixels on the longest side, type jpg – set to the highest quality. DPI can be set to any number, but if you must specify something to go with 72 dpi.

Many folks feel the holidays are time for celebration.  I think the secret to a happy life is finding cause for celebration everyday.  It won’t surprise you that my family celebrates with food.  One of my favorite celebratory foods is pesto…on just about anything, especially pizza.  This next Call gives you reason to celebrate…women, just in time for Women’s History Month.

Check out this Call for Entries from the Tall Grass Arts Association called Half the Sky in celebration of Women’s History Month (March).  The entry fee is low, and you don’t have to be a woman to enter…just celebrate them.

Learn more about the Tall Grass Arts Association!Chinese proverb: “Women hold up half the sky.” Women’s History Month grew out of a small-town school event in Sonoma County, California in 1978. In 1981, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Rep. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) co-sponsored a joint Congressional resolution proclaiming a national Women’s History Week. 

In 1987, Congress expanded the celebration to a month and March was declared Women’s History Month.  Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society.  In 2011, Tall Grass Arts Association will host a national, juried exhibit celebrating Women’s History Month.

Check out some of the previous Tall Grass Exhibits!ELIGIBILITY:  All artists ages 18+ are eligible.  All media will be considered.  Original work only.  All work submitted must reflect the theme of the exhibit – the contributions of women to history, culture or society.  All work must be for sale. 

Work over 75 pounds must be hand delivered, installed and picked up by the artist or representative.  Work that requires more than 1 hour to install must be installed by artist.  Work may not have been exhibited previously at Tall Grass.

Learn more about Juror Sabrina Raaf!JUROR:  Sabrina Raaf is a Chicago-based artist working in experimental sculptural media and photography.  Her work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions at Mejan Labs (Stockholm), Stefan Stux Gallery (NYC), Ars Electronica (Linz), Opel Villas Foundation Art Center (Rüsselsheim), Museum Tinguely (Basel), Espace Landowski (Paris), Artbots 2005 (Dublin), San Jose Museum of Art, Kunsthaus Graz, ISEA (Helsinki), Klein Art Works (Chicago), The Lab (San Francisco) and Painted Bride Center (Philadelphia).

Raaf is the recipient of a Creative Capital Grant in Emerging Fields (2002) and an Illinois Arts Council Fellowship (2005 & 2001).  Reviews of her work have appeared in Art in America, Contemporary, Chicago Tribune Sunday Magazine, Leonardo, www.lab71.org, The Washington Post, and New Art Examiner.  She received an MFA in Art and Technology from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1999) and is currently an Assistant Professor in the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

I ATE THE WHOLE THING!

Vacation time is over, and I am in a food coma.  I may never look at sweet potato casserole the same way again.  For those of you that survived the holidays without a permanent taste aversion, this next call is another opportunity in NYC.

Check out the Call for Entries from The Ernest Rubenstein Gallery and the Educational Alliance called The Urban Situation.  The entry fee is very low, but the number of slots they have to fill is equally low.  Could be a great opportunity, but do your homework so you know what kind of work they want!

CALL for ENTRIES:  The Urban Situation

The Ernest Rubenstein Gallery – Educational Alliance is seeking submissions for “The Urban Situation” a group exhibition of 20 artworks.  Open to artists working in any 2-dimensional medium (not photography). Opening reception Thursday, Feb. 10, 6-8pm.

About the Educational Alliance:  The Ernest Rubenstein Gallery is a distinct and impressive public space at the core of The Educational Alliance, a settlement house on the Lower East Side.  In recent years a wide range of artists have participated in exhibits including: Polly Appelbaum, Lynda Benglis, Peter Halley, Yvonne Jacquette, Peter Halley, Joyce Kozloff, Robert Kushner, Glenn Ligon, Carrie Moyer, Tom Otterness, Sheila Pepe, Judy Pfaff and Kiki Smith.

Mark Rothko is among the many artists that have taught at the art school!The Art School & Gallery provides instruction and cultural enrichment to people of all ages.  In the gallery, they present exhibits of emerging and established artist, alumni and student artworks.  The art school offers courses in: ceramics, drawing, painting, photography, sculpture and welding for beginning to experienced artists.  Started in 1895 to provide arts enrichment to young immigrants and neighborhood residents it soon became known for its quality program attracting people from all over the city.  Among the artists who studied or taught there are Louise Nevelson, Adolph Gottlieb, Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, Jules Olitski, Leonard Baskin, Peter Blume, Chaim Gross, Ben Shahn and Moses Soyer.

I have kept most of my art-related  Rejection Letters over the years.  And along with those letters, I have kept a US map to mark off each show with the goal being to hit every state in the continental US before I make the move to conquer the world…and all of its delicious food, of course.  I’m making progress.  For those of you trying to conquer the Ohio art market, this next call for gallery representation is for you.

The Hudson Gallery has an open call for Portfolio Review.  Do you homework and then submit your work.  No entry fee and guaranteed response regardless of the outcome.  What do you have to lose?

The Hudson Gallery will review portfolios from artists seeking representation. Please take a detailed looked at their web site and/or visit the Gallery prior to sending them your materials. Always do your homework.

Please include a self-addressed stamped envelope for the return of your materials. They do not take appointments to review materials or view portfolios during gallery hours. They do not accept email submissions.  All submissions will receive a gallery response.

EXPERIENCE by the POUND

There is something to be said for tradition and experience.  I traditionally gain 7 pounds from Thanksgiving to New Years, but that isn’t the best example, I suppose.  I just can’t resist the sweet potato cassarole.  However, the experience gained by doing something year after year better equips me to tackle the problems and make it better the next year, in theory.  This next call proves that after 30 years, some people just know how to get it right.

Founded in 1977, PhotoSpiva has become the longest-running photographic competition of its kind in the U.S.  As stated by the founders, the objective of PhotoSpiva is to “present an exhibition of excellence in photography, celebrating the scope and vigorous activity of today’s contemporary photographers.”

Co-Founder Jim Mueller stated, “We have intentionally avoided any categorization of either photographers or their work in setting forth the criteria for this competitive.” PhotoSpiva welcomes any photographic process as long as it is original artwork and has not been previously exhibited at Spiva Center for the Arts. This philosophy has created an unbiased forum for exhibiting and educating photographers. The PhotoSpiva prospectus, promotional materials and exhibition brochures are distributed to professional photographers, emerging artists, educators, students, and amateur photography enthusiasts throughout the United States.

ELIGIBILITY:  PhotoSpiva is open to any amateur or professional photographer in the United States or its territories.  Submitted images must be the photographer’s own work, and it is the sole responsibility of the photographer to obtain written releases from any recognizable person(s) depicted. Work derived from any photographic process — traditional, digital, or photo-based mixed media — is eligible as long as the work is original and has never been exhibited at George A. Spiva Center for the Arts.

SPECIFICATIONS:  Digital entries should be JPG files at least 4 megapixels (height or width 2000 pixels or greater) in RGB color mode.  The juror will review all online entries and select images for display at Spiva Center for the Arts. PhotoSpiva will notify artists of acceptance. Accepted images — only those chosen by the juror — must be matted with presentation-quality white matboard (minimum 2-inch border), framed in standard black metal frames, and wired for hanging. No off-white or color mats will be accepted. Framed exhibition prints must arrive at Spiva Center for the Arts by 5:00 pm CST February 22, 2011. Artists are responsible for shipping costs to and from Spiva.

ENTRY FEE:

JUROR:  Anthony Bannon (born 1943) is the director of George Eastman House, International Museum of Photography & Film, located in Rochester, N.Y. He has held that position since 1996, previously serving as director of the Burchfield-Penney Arts Center and director of Cultural Affairs on the campus of the State University of New York at Buffalo, both located in Buffalo, N.Y.

George Eastman House is the world’s oldest museum of photography and largest museum of photography and film. During Bannon’s tenure the museum launched three internationally renowned graduate and post-graduate schools of film and photograph preservation and conservation.

Bannon has lectured at museums, colleges, and festivals worldwide. He currently serves as chairman of the Lucie Awards/International Photography Awards and was awarded the Golden Career Award in 2007 by the FOTOfusion Festival of Photography & Digital Imaging for his “far-reaching leadership and scholarship in the cultural community.”

We know that I love a theme…from food to art shows.  I went grocery shopping the other day and EVERYTHING I bought was marked “bold” or “hot” or “spicy.”  However, I truly understand the privilege of interpretation.  My version of hot (4 peppers on the Thai scale) is certainly different that my eleven year old that thinks Bold Manwich is spicy, ha.  This next call is completely up to YOUR interpretation and choice.   The options are wide open…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition called Wide Open 2.  The sky is the limit on this show …there are no size or media limits.  Don’t miss this opportunity.

BWAC has a truly unique gallery – a massive Civil War-era warehouse on the Red Hook waterfront in Brooklyn, NY.  Its enormous space affords them the opportunity to exhibit really huge work, and they welcome it.

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all residents of the U.S. and its Territories 18 years of age or older.

MEDIA:  This is a juried exhibition for artists working in all traditional and non-traditional 2D and 3D media, except for film/video. All artwork must be original in concept, design and execution. ENTRY FEE:  Early Bird Submissions (through January 4, 2011): $45.00 for up to three (3) images ($60.00 if mailed) plus $5.00 for each additional image.
Submissions between January 5 and January 17: $65 for up to three (3) images, plus $5 for each additional image. All submissions must be online during this period.

JUROR:  Nathan Trotman, Associate Curator, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum of Art, joined the curatorial staff in 2001. He holds a Master of Philosophy from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, where he focused on performance, photography, and time-based art, and is a graduate of the Whitney Museum’s Independent Study Program.

Among the exhibitions he has curated are Haunted: Contemporary Photography / Video / Performance; Catherine Opie: American Photographer, and he served as assistant curator for Spanish Painting from El Greco to Picasso: Time, Truth and History; exhibitions on David Smith, Richard Serra and Constantin Brancusi; and the acclaimed Matthew Barney: The Cremaster Cycle.

BEST of SHOW: $1000.00 At the Opening Reception, the artist whose work is juried as ‘Best of Show’ by Nathan Trotman will receive a $1,000 cash prize and a complimentary one-year BWAC membership.

PEOPLES’ CHOICE: $500.00 The artist whose work is voted ‘Best’ by attendees at the Show Opening will receive a $500 cash prize and a complimentary one-year BWAC membership

CURATORS’ CHOICE: $250.00 The artist whose work the Show Curators, (Anna Annus Hagen, Therese Urban, Scott Henstrand) choose for excellence will receive a $250.00 cash prize and a complimentary one-year BWAC membership.

CERTIFICATES: Certificates will be awarded in the following categories: Painting: Best in Oil, Acrylic and Watercolor; Photography: Best in Traditional and Digital formats; Pastel / Drawing / Print / Graphic media: Best in Classical and Computer-aided; and Best in Mixed Media, Sculpture, Assemblage, and Installation.

Things tend to be a little offbeat in my studio.  I love the quirky …the odd …the naturally puzzling.  Things also tend to be a little offbeat in my kitchen.  But, we’ve taken sea urchin off the menu since Jon is allergic to shellfish.  Maybe it isn’t a problem, but I really can’t decide.  This next call invites you to revel in the weirdness of it all.

JUROR:  Billy the Mime is an avid photo collector and professional weirdo.  He has amazed and disturbed audiences across the country with his offbeat performances.  The New York Times called Billy the Mime’s live show “politically incorrect” and “shockingly unsentimental.”

FREE FRAMING:  They offer free matting and framing for accepted photographs that fit their pre-cut mat sizes for the duration of the exhibition.  Precut mat sizes are 11″x14″ mats with an 8″x10″ window, or 16″x20″ mats with an 11″x14″ window and 20″x24″ mats with a 16″x20″ window.  They will also print your photo for a nominal fee if you are accepted into the show and would prefer not to mail a print.

FIRST CHANCES

People tend to applaud those that give second chances.  But what about those that give you the very first chance?  Well, not every first chance is a winner.  I may never forgive the person who gave the fried dill pickle its first shot on the menu, but there are lots of others that make up for that little snafu.

Check out this Call for Proposals from the Lower East Side Printshop for their Special Editions Residency Program.  It is a non-profit printshop that doesn’t require that you have printmaking experience to apply.  There doesn’t seem to be an application fee.  And, you know you wanna try your hand at printmaking…

The Lower East Side Printshop offers an opportunity to complete an important new body of work in collaboration with one of our two experienced master printers, fully sponsored by the Printshop.

Experimentation and exploration of new materials and processes are welcome.

The Printshop documents the artwork digitally, in printed materials including the annual catalogue, and on the Internet.  The Printshop also provides exposure opportunities through on- and off-site exhibitions and studio visits.

Awarded artists work alongside other emerging and mid-career artists in the Printshop’s Collaborations Studio.

RESIDENCY INCLUDES:
1. 12 day-long collaboration sessions with a master printer during a period of three to six months, plus, production/editioning service; independent studio access during the residency;

The Printshop defines emerging artists as those who are under-recognized and under-represented, at early stages in their careers.  Students enrolled in any kind of degree program are not eligible.  Only artists who are current legal residents of the US are eligible to apply (i.e., Social Security cardholders).  Past recipients of the Special Editions Residencies are ineligible.

MEDIA: Artists from all disciplines and cultural backgrounds are encouraged to apply, printmaking experience is not required.

DEADLINE:  December 2, 2010

NOTIFICATION: All applications will be evaluated for their artistic excellence by the selection panel consisting of five artists and art professionals. Selection will be completed in February 2011.  All applicants will be informed of the panel’s decision by email.

1. Up to 8 images of recent work on a CD. Images should be in JPEG format, resolution 200 pixel/inch, maximum dimensions 800 x 800 pixels, RGB color mode.  Title each image as “your last name_your first name_#” (ex. Smith_Pat_3.jpg).  Images will be projected from a Mac computer.  Write your name on the CD.

2. Image list: your name, work title, year, medium, and dimensions
