Must I admit that pickled pigs feet give me the willies? They may be lovely, but I find the trend to “pickle” everything other than cucumbers a little disturbing. Plus, there is something about those naked feet in a jar that make me feel guilty looking at them. Wierd, I know. Speaking of naked, this Call for Entries wants your best nudes…maybe your feet.

The Shoe Factory Art Co-op, Rochester’s alternative exhibit space, is accepting submissions for their 2011 April art exhibition. Artists are asked to create a work of art that reflects the show’s title Exposed! The Nude Self. All mediums considered. All sizes considered. Juried by The Shoe Factory Art Co-op.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists residing in the US. Editor’s Note: The prospectus does not give specifics; however, it was sent to me as a national showIf you are under 18 years old, I would inquire about your eligibility prior to paying the entry fee.

MEDIA: Your work(s) of art must reflect the title of the show, “Exposed! The Nude Self.” They will consider all media.

ENTRY FEE: Please pay your $15 or $25 submission fee by PayPal or Credit Card on the Call for Artists page on the Shoe Factory Art Co-op website, or you can mail a check or money order.

I think if a portraitist had to capture my image as a food, I would be a mozzarella and proscuitto stuffed pepper… well-marinated, all little salty, a little spicy, and worth every penny, ha. “We’re looking for something beyond the traditional portrait – more than just a eloquently captured face. We’re looking for uncanny, parody, distortions, subtle suggestions and in-your-face implications. For “Persona” we’re looking for portraits devised outside the box (or in one, might also be applicable in certain circumstances!) – we want to see the characters you’ve captured.

“There can more to a superb portrait than a superb likeness of an individual a the testimony to their soul can be visioned way beyond the eyes. How much can you tell us about a person with just one image? Their life story? Perhaps. How did you show the idiosyncrasies, quirks, that make your sitters both physically and emotionally, individuals? We can’t wait to fill our gallery walls with a newly visioned kind of face – portrait as character and caricature.”
JUROR: The portraits of Chris Buck have been surprising us, making us laugh, causing us to ask questions, and inspiring us to think outside of the box for years. His brand of image making (over two decades worth) infuses wit with uncommon gesture and implied meaning. He tells more than a story – he creates tales (sometimes through pure expression). Chris was the first recipient for the Arnold Newman Portrait Prize (2007), which we think he so rightfully deserved! His clients include IBM, Microsoft, Moviefone, Citibank, GQ, Blender and The New York Times Magazine. From uncanny celebrity portraits, to advertising humor, to editorial wisdom, Chris Buck has offered us a very special take on our world of Personas.

PHOTO SUBMISSIONS:

Age: Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If younger, a parent or legal guardian may make the submission for you.

Ownership: All submitted photos must have been taken by the photographer making the entry.

If you are a parent or legal guardian submitting for a minor, please make it clear on the submission form.

Digital Submissions: All submissions must be made by digital files through:

1. Upload on the Dark Room Gallery website or

2. Sent via email to submissions (at) VermontPhotoSpace.com. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it along with an application form. There is a $5.00 surcharge for email entries.

3. Images should be as large as possible but no larger than 1280 pixels on the longest side, type jpg – set to the highest quality. DPI can be set to any number, but if you must specify something to go with 72 dpi.

FEES: Up to three images may be submitted for a fee of $20 US for on-line submission and $25 for email submission. Additional images may be submitted for an additional $5 US per image.

DEADLINE: Images and payment must be received by midnight (Eastern Standard Time) on August 16, 2011.

NOTIFICATION: August 23, 2011

RIGHTS: Photographers retain all rights to their work, except for submissions accepted for exhibition: artists grant Dark Room Gallery/Vermont Photo Space the right to use their images to promote the exhibition on the website and for inclusion in an exhibit catalog.

Darkroom Gallery provides free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of their exhibitions, subject to standard sizes. Photographers set their own prices if they wish to sell their work, and retain all rights.

I love unexpected food preparations. I enjoy a chef’s foray into the alternatives to the tried and true standards. One of my favorites in no-heat cooking methods like ceviche. Fish and citrus and salt are natural companions, so why not cook fish that way? This next Call for Entries is a celebration of alternative processes in photography. Take a look at this opportunity…

FRIED THIGHS

When I think of the foods of my youth, I think of… Banquet Fried Chicken. I know, I know. I was reared by my father, alone, between the ages of 3 and 13, and we ate anything and everything pre-packaged or ready-made that we could because I did all the cooking from age 5 up. Do not send me letters about child labor or processed food, please; it was not a choice… it just was. Oddly enough, I suspect my child will remember granola bars and french bread pizza as the foods of his youth. Wonder if I’ve really made much of an improvement, ha. This next Call has me wondering what the food of my 40’s will be. Any suggestions?

Prints USA 2011

Prints U.S.A. 2011 is a national, competitive exhibition sponsored biennially by the Springfield Art Museum, Springfield, Missouri. The primary purpose of the exhibition is to recognize and encourage printmaking in the United States and its possessions.

ELIGIBILITY: Prints U.S.A. 2011 may be entered by any artist, 18 years of age or older, living in the USA or its possessions.

MEDIA: Prints must be original. Monoprints and monotypes are eligible. Reproductions, using any printing process to reproduce a work executed in another media, are ineligible. Photographs are also ineligible. All prints must have been executed since January 1, 2010 and not previously shown at the Springfield Art Museum.

DEADLINE: August 30, 2011

NOTIFICATION: Sept. 15, 2011 cards mailed

ENTRY FEE: A non-refundable entry fee of $20.00 will be charged for up to three entries. Each artist is allowed to enter a maximum of three prints. Please make checks payable to the City of Springfield – Art Museum.

JUROR: Elizabeth Wyckoff, Curator of Prints, Drawings and Photographs, Saint Louis Art Museum, St. Louis, Missouri.

AWARDS: Approximately $10,000 in cash, patron, and Springfield Art Museum purchase awards will be available. Museum purchases will be selected by the Museum Director and the Curator of Collections. Cash awards will be made at the Judge’s discretion.

SALES: All entries submitted must be available for purchase (including frame) at the time of the exhibition. The Springfield Art Museum will retain a 25% commission on all sales directly attributed to the exhibition.

3331 Artist & Curator Residence TOKYO

ELIGIBILITY: 3331 Arts Chiyoda is launching a new residency program open to artists, curators and creative practitioners internationally. With a full range of facilities including accommodation, studio and gallery, creative practitioners have the exceptional opportunity to extend their artistic engagement in the heart of Tokyo.

Not only will artists be able to pursue their own individual research and practice, but they will be connected to the extensive network of Tokyo’s art scene through the hub that is 3331. With the energy of the electronics and anime haven of Akihabara right at one’s doorstep and the traditional cultures of downtown but a stone’s throw away artists will be able to experience all aspects of this kaleidoscopic city from this convenient base.

Artists are not only able to spend time in Tokyo, but are able to create work onsite and then finally exhibit what they have developed during their stay, in the distinct setting of 3331 Arts Chiyoda. They are pleased to be able to offer these facilities to artists who can contribute to the creative expressions of this metropolis and engage its inhabitants in new ways.

ENTRY FEE: No fee to enter; however there is a fee to participate.

They particularly encourage applications from galleries, museums, universities, and arts organizations. They also welcome approaches from individual artists; however, they recommend that artists consider applying in groups of 2-5. Please note that 3331 is unable to offer financial support to artists in residence in this program.

The facilities are ideal to be shared between a group of 3 artists, and can accommodate a maximum of 5 artists if so required. In order to apply for this program please download the application form from the website.

I raise my blue martini to my friend James Allen Sands who lived with HIV for eight years before dying from AIDS related complications nearly 15 years ago. I love him. He is missed. The world is not quite as bright without his smiling face. This next Call for Entries in support of two AIDS Service Organizations won’t bring you back, but it is for you James.

Check out this Call for Entries for a World AIDS Day Exhibit sponsored, in part, by the Fremont Gallery in South Pasedena, CA. There is no fee to enter, but there is a hefty comission (70% for a great cause). Only 15 artists will be accepted …don’t delay submitting your entry.

World AIDS Day Exhibit

Fremont Gallery in South Pasedena in coordination with ARTBYJCA, will be creating a fund raising event to help benefit the following AIDS Service Organizations (ASOs):Asian Pacific AIDS Intervention Team (APAIT) / APAIT Health Center and Whittier Rio Honda AIDS Project (WRHAP). The exhibition will be from December 3, 2011 to December 12, 2011 with an opening reception on Saturday, December 3, 2011 from 6pm – 9pm. Artists will be required to attend and participate at the opening reception. A pre-fundraiser will be held on September 17, 2011.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists.

MEDIA: No multi media or installation work will be accepted. However 3D work is accepted. Artist will be notified of the theme of the event after the 15 artists are selected.

Gallore Gallery in Middletown, CT announces a call to photographers for it’s 1st Annual international juried photography exhibition, December 17th – 31st. They are seeking 12 of the best artist photos to showcase in their year end celebration event.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to artists worldwide

MEDIA: All work made in photographic processes, both traditional and digital, will be accepted.

THEME: Representational or non-representational images of the human form, abstract, cityscape or landscape images. These fine art images should emphasize unique composition, pattern, shape, and color/contrast and must be of high quality.
